Okonowo is the greatest warrior alive. His fame has spread like a bushfire in West Africa and he is one of the most powerful men of his clan. But he also has a fiery temper. Determined not to be like his father, he refuses to show weakness to anyone - even if the only way he can master his feelings is with his fists. When outsiders threaten the traditions of his clan, Okonowo takes violent action. Will the great man's dangerous pride eventually destroy him?
HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. 'The reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across the water to bar the way for our return. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.' At the peak of European Imperialism, steamboat captain Charles Marlow travels deep into the African Congo on his way to relieve the elusive Mr Kurtz, an ivory trader renowned for his fearsome reputation. On his journey into the unknown Marlow takes a terrifying trip into his own subconscious, overwhelmed by his menacing, perilous and horrifying surroundings. The landscape and the people he meets force him to reflect on human nature and society, and in turn Conrad writes revealingly about the dangers of imperialism.
This selection, which was made by Eliot himself, is intended as an introduction to the main body of his poetry prior to Four Quartets, which is available separately in Faber Paperbacks. The selection includes the whole of The Waste Land.
HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. 'Oh Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat.' Spirited and impulsive, Marianne Dashwood is the complete opposite to her controlled and sensible sister, Elinor. When it comes to matters of the heart, Marianne is passionate and romantic and soon falls for the charming, but unreliable Mr Willoughby. Elinor, in contrast, copes stoically with the news that her love, Edward Ferrars is promised to another. It is through their shared experiences of love that both sisters come to learn that the key to a successful match comes from finding the perfect mixture of rationality and feeling.
As?
Heinrich Ohlhoff.
Human life would not be the same without language communication. Sounds and symbols are the most basic characteristics of all languages, but the system by which these are linked to form meaning is conventionalised in very different ways. Many school-going learners in South Africa are currently not being instructed in their primary language for reasons that include the perception of increased economic opportunity that English gives. Learn2Teach accesses the theories and practices, and offers guidance on the principles, of teaching and learning English as a first or additional language within the context of the multilingual South African classroom as set out in the national curriculum. Learn2Teach makes special reference to the communicative approach which supports the outcomes-based education philosophy by not only promoting basic interpersonal oral-aural skills, but also integrating the expressive and receptive skills needed to develop the cognitive academic language proficiency so necessary for speakers of other languages being schooled in English. Many practical examples and teaching strategies are suggested and teachers are encouraged to develop their own coherent philosophy based on personal experiences.
Research writing: breaking the barriers is a title for those who regularly write documents based on research. If you find your writing is stale and you are unable to improve it, or you are trying to understand why you cannot finish a paper, or perhaps you are feeling jaded and disillusioned with the environment of 'publish or perish' and would like to gain a sense of control, enjoyment and inspiration from doing research and publishing, then this title is for you. While it is conceptualised around qualitative research writing in an academic context, the title focuses on generating quality ideas, demystifying the writing process and breaking the barriers of real and imagined writing restrictions. Any researcher can benefit from this creative adventure.
Written by Mariama Ba and translated from the French by Modupe Bode-Thomas, So Long a Letter won the first Noma Award for Publishing in Africa, and was recognised as one of Africa's 100 Best Books of the 20th Century in an initiative organised by the Zimbabwe International Book Fair. This edition includes an introduction by Professor Kenneth W. Harrow of Michigan State University.
As South Africa continues to advance towards the fulfilment of its visionary constitution, significant shifts in the mode, style, and theme of its nation's theatre have begun to take hold. The four plays in this collection, by Lara Foot Newton, Mike van Graan, Motshabi Tyelele and Craig Higginson, offer insights into an emerging national identity. The primary themes explored in the four texts - reconciliation, matriarchy, justice, accountability, corruption, truth, memory, and violence - reflect on the challenges and questions South Africans are confronted with in their nascent democratic state. In the two essays that complement this anthology, theatre director Greg Homann argues that South African theatre and her playwrights have surfaced into a new period, one that signals new themes and challenges. The mode of representation has shifted and the monological form we came to both loathe and love has dissipated to match a democratic society grappling with multiple points of view. Reach (Lara Foot Newton) is a story of trying to connect. Two South Africans from different generations reach out across conflicting experiences and racial lines in an attempt to reconcile their shared past. Some Mother's Sons (Mike van Graan) questions the success and failure of the South African criminal and justice system. Vusi and Braam, two lawyers and friends, negotiate their experiences of apartheid violence and post-apartheid criminality. Shwele Bawo!!: A Grave Injustice (Motshabi Tyelele) is a one-woman play detailing how wife and mother, Dikeledi Nkabinde, has found herself locked-up for the murder of her Black Economic Empowered husband. Dream of the Dog (Craig Higginson) is set on the eve of Richard and Patricia Wiley's departure from their KwaZulu-Natal farm. A series of interactions that challenge notions of truth, revenge, memory, and justice unfold when a familiar visitor arrives.

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. 'I do not cling to life sufficiently to fear death.' Adventurous and spirited in tone, The Three Musketeers is considered one of the greatest historical French novels. Zambezi is die eerste reisbeskrywing in Afrikaans in jare. M.C.
Fools, the title story in this collection, is a tale of generations in the struggle against oppression. Zamani is a middle-aged teacher who was once respected by the community as a leader of the future. Then he disgraced himself, and now he's haunted by the impotence of his present life. A chance meeting brings him up against Zani, a young student activist whose attempts to kindle the flames of resistance in Charterston Location are ludicrously impractical. Both affection and hostility bind Zamani and Zani together in an intense and unpredictable relationship. Finding each other means finding the common ground of their struggle. It also means reexamining their lives - and, notably, their relationship s with women.'The Test', 'The Prophetess', and 'The Music of the Violin' all deal with formative experiences in a township childhood: an act of courage and endurance; a close encounter with an awe-inspiring old woman; a choice which must be made between the narrow ambitions of middle-class parents and the challenge of the township streets, at once more inviting and more dangerous.'Uncle' celebrates the gift of one generation to another: a gift that mingles music with other adventures of the spirit, recklessness with resourcefulness, and laughter with wisdom. |
