This text provides a balanced treatment of strategic, 'how to,' and conceptual material, in a highly readable and interesting format. 'The seventh edition' continues its cutting edge coverage on the latest topics and developments in retailing including globalization; customer relationship management programs; multi-channel retailing; supply chain management, the use of the Internet to improve operating efficiencies and customer service; and, legal, ethical and cooperate social responsibility issues. Students indicate that this text is a 'good read' because of the numerous examples of retailers, their practices, the interesting retail facts in the margins, and eye catching design and layout.

Edward Uechi

Public Service Information Technology explains how all areas of IT management work together. Building a computer-based information system is like constructing a house; different disciplines are employed and need to be coordinated. In addition to the technical aspects like computer networking and systems administration, the functional, business, management, and strategic aspects all are equally important. IT is not as simple as expecting to use a software program in three months. Information Technology is a complex field that has multiple working parts that require proper management. This book demystifies how IT operates in an organization, giving the public manager the necessary details to manage Information Technology and to use all of its resources for proper effect.

This book is for technical IT managers and non-technical (non-IT) managers and senior executive leaders. Not only will the Chief Information Officer, the IT Director, and the IT Manager find this book invaluable to running an effective IT unit, the Chief Financial Officer, the HR Director, and functional managers will understand their roles in conjunction with the technical team. Every manager at all levels of the organization has a small yet consequential role to play in developing and managing an IT system. With practical guidelines and worksheets provided in the book, both the functional team and the technical team will be able to engage collaboratively to produce a high-quality computer-based information system that everyone involved can be proud to use for many years and that can deliver an effective and timely public program to citizens.

This book includes:

  • Multiple layers of security controls your organization can develop and maintain, providing greater protection against cyber threats.
  • Job-related worksheets you can use to strengthen your skills and achieve desired program results.
  • Practices you can apply to maximize the value of your contracts and your relationships with for-profit companies and other contractors.
  • New method for deciding when contracting or outsourcing is appropriate when internal resources are not available.
  • Improved method for estimating intangible benefits (non-financial gains) attributable to a proposed project.
  • An approach to deciding what parts of a business process should or should not be automated, paying critical attention to decision points and document reviews.

Morgan has extensively revised and updated his best-selling Focus Groups as Qualitative Research, providing an excellent guide for researchers in every discipline. He begins his comprehensive revision with an updated introduction that offers a discussion of current social science approaches to focus groups. Expanded coverage on the comparison of focus groups to individual interviews follows, as well as more on the strengths and weaknesses of focus groups (Chapter 2). Chapter 3?s section on self-contained focus groups has also been expanded to reflect the increased range of research being done in this area. The next chapter has been thoroughly reorganized both to provide an overview of what a typical set of groups looks like as well as new insights on research design. Similarly, Chapters 5 and 6 have been reorganized and broadened to include examples from social scientists who have established their own practices and methodological research on focus groups. This best-selling research guide concludes with future directions and references that take into account the explosive growth in focus groups as a research tool for all social scientists.

Reflecting the many changes that have occurred in the study of focus groups over the years, Focus Groups as Qualitative Research, Second Edition is for qualitative researchers in every academic discipline as well as those in nonacademic settings.

Safety-I and Safety-II - The Past and Future of Safety Management (Paperback, 3rd Edition): Erik Hollnagel Safety-I and Safety-II - The Past and Future of Safety Management (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
Erik Hollnagel
R1,492 Discovery Miles 14 920 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Safety has traditionally been defined as a condition where the number of adverse outcomes was as low as possible (Safety-I). From a Safety-I perspective, the purpose of safety management is to make sure that the number of accidents and incidents is kept as low as possible, or as low as is reasonably practicable.

This means that safety management must start from the manifestations of the absence of safety and that - paradoxically - safety is measured by counting the number of cases where it fails rather than by the number of cases where it succeeds. This unavoidably leads to a reactive approach based on responding to what goes wrong or what is identified as a risk - as something that could go wrong. Focusing on what goes right, rather than on what goes wrong, changes the definition of safety from ’avoiding that something goes wrong’ to ’ensuring that everything goes right’. More precisely, Safety-II is the ability to succeed under varying conditions, so that the number of intended and acceptable outcomes is as high as possible. From a Safety-II perspective, the purpose of safety management is to ensure that as much as possible goes right, in the sense that everyday work achieves its objectives.

This means that safety is managed by what it achieves (successes, things that go right), and that likewise it is measured by counting the number of cases where things go right. In order to do this, safety management cannot only be reactive, it must also be proactive. But it must be proactive with regard to how actions succeed, to everyday acceptable performance, rather than with regard to how they can fail, as traditional risk analysis does.

This book analyses and explains the principles behind both approaches and uses this to consider the past and future of safety management practices. The analysis makes use of common examples and cases from domains such as aviation, nuclear power production, process management and health care.

High-Impact Consulting - How Clients And Consultants Can Work Together To Achieve Extraordinary Results (Hardcover, Completely... High-Impact Consulting - How Clients And Consultants Can Work Together To Achieve Extraordinary Results (Hardcover, Completely Revised and Updated)
Robert H. Schaffer
R662 Discovery Miles 6 620 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

Even though corporate clients continue to spend millions of dollars on consultant-based solutions, the success rate of these high-priced remedies is far from what it should be. No matter how wise and creative the input of a consultant, says Robert H. Schaffer, it will pay off only if the client does what is necessary to benefit from the advice. But often there's a big "implementation gap" between what client's must do to make a project succeed and what they are actually able and willing to do.
In this new and revised edition of the landmark book "High-Impact Consulting," Robert H. Schaffer reveals how senior managers unwittingly collude with their consultants to perpetuate the great waste inherent in "the five fatal flaws of conventional consulting." Drawing on his own work with companies-- Motorola, Rio Tinto, IBM, General Reinsurance Corporation, The World Bank, and other successful organizations-- Schaffer offers a field-tested approach to working with consultants that has proven to get results. He identifies the key elements of an effective project design?particularly that project objectives are defined in terms of client results rather than just consultant deliverables. The process enables clients to be certain that the work is carried out in ways that ensure success.
The author explains the importance of accomplishing results quickly and then using these "rapid-cycle wins" as vehicles for sharpening management skills, strengthening work disciplines, and introducing new technology. In addition he tells managers and consultants how they can build on these early successes and tackle larger accomplishments and organization wide improvements.
This thoroughly updatededition features valuable new insights and illustrative cases. It also includes a wealth of practical new tools that make the book a user-friendly, quick reference for both client managers and their consultants.

Andrew Thomson, Rosemary Thomson, Eileen Arney
R1,881 Discovery Miles 18 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This updated and exciting fourth edition of Managing People: A Practical Guide for Front-Line Managers addresses the growing needs of front-line managers who are not themselves specialists in personnel management but whose roles require them to have these skills. A growing trend over the last two decades has given these managers an increasing amount of responsibility of direct line management, which can be extremely challenging especially if the correct training is not given.

This book examines how the different parts of managing people fit together, whilst acknowledging that different contexts require different approaches and recognizing ongoing organizational, environmental and legal changes that affect the employment framework. It recognizes the rapidly changing context in which modern front-line managers have to operate and acknowledges the increasing expectations of good leadership as a necessity. However, the book also emphasizes the need for front-line managers to understand themselves, their own management styles and attitudes, together with the importance of empathy in appreciating the perspectives of the staff that work under them.

Managing People: A Practical Guide for Front-Line Managers is designed for both new managers and for NVQ/SVQ Level 4 students. It is also appropriate for the first stages of Foundation Degrees and for HND courses combining academic study with workplace learning.
