More than Money - Five Forms of Capital to Create Wealth and Eliminate Poverty (Paperback): Paul Godfrey More than Money - Five Forms of Capital to Create Wealth and Eliminate Poverty (Paperback)
Paul Godfrey
R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is poverty inevitable? No, says author Paul Godfrey. "More than Money" shows how organizations can win the fight against poverty and create prosperity for people at the base of the pyramid in the developing and developed world.
This book presents a novel framework that shows how five types of interrelated capital--institutional, human, social, organizational, and physical--enable development and sustainable growth. In addition to a widely-applicable model, Godfrey provides principles to guide application. Core chapters articulate each specific form of capital and provide examples of how it contributes to the triple bottom line. Not just a theoretical examination of poverty, "More than Money" delivers timely advice to organizations that produce goods and services, implement policies, and create meaningful change on the ground. This book will guide social innovators and entrepreneurs in business, government, and civil society settings as they create a vision, assemble a team of strong partners, and effectively measure social innovation.

The Quest for Attention - Nonprofit Advocacy in a Social Media Age (Paperback): Chao Guo, Gregory D. Saxton The Quest for Attention - Nonprofit Advocacy in a Social Media Age (Paperback)
Chao Guo, Gregory D. Saxton
R768 R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Save R88 (11%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Today, social media offers an alternative broadcast and communication medium for nonprofit advocacy organizations. At the same time, social media ushers in a "noisy" information era that renders it more difficult for nonprofits to make their voices heard. This book seeks to unpack the prevalence, mechanisms, and ramifications of a new model for nonprofit advocacy in a social media age. The keyword for this new model is attention. Advocacy always starts with attention: when an organization speaks out on a cause, it must ensure that it has an audience and that its voice is heard by that audience; it must ensure that current and potential supporters are paying attention to what it has to say before expecting more tangible outcomes. Yet the organization must also ensure that advocacy does not end with attention: attention should serve as a springboard to something greater. The authors elaborate how attention fits into contemporary organizations' advocacy work and explain the key features of social media that are driving the quest for attention. Developing conceptual models, they explain why some organizations and messages gain attention while others do not. Lastly, the book explores how organizations are weaving together online and offline efforts to deliver strategic advocacy outcomes.

The Real Problem Solvers - Social Entrepreneurs in America (Paperback): Ruth A. Shapiro The Real Problem Solvers - Social Entrepreneurs in America (Paperback)
Ruth A. Shapiro
R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Today, "social entrepreneurship" describes a host of new initiatives, and often refers to approaches that are breaking from traditional philanthropic and charitable organizational behavior. Nowhere is this more true than in the United States-where, from 1995-2005, the number of non-profit organizations registered with the IRS grew by 53%. But, what types of change have these social entrepreneurial efforts brought to the world of civil society and philanthropy? What works in today's environment? And, what barriers are these new efforts breaking down as they endeavor to make the world a better place? The Real Problem Solvers brings together leading entrepreneurs, funders, investors, thinkers, and champions in the field to answer these questions from their own, first-person perspectives. Contributors include marquee figures, such as Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, Ashoka Founder Bill Drayton, Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder of the Acumen Fund, and Sally Osberg, CEO of the Skoll Foundation. The core chapters are anchored by an introduction, a conclusion, and question-and-answers sections that weave together the voices of various contributors. In no other book are so many leaders presented side-by-side. Therefore, this is the ideal accessible and personal introduction for students of and newcomers to social entrepreneurship.

Conceptualizing and Researching Governance in Public and Non-Profit Organizations (Hardcover): Luca Gnan, Alessandro Hinna,... Conceptualizing and Researching Governance in Public and Non-Profit Organizations (Hardcover)
Luca Gnan, Alessandro Hinna, Fabio Monteduro; Series edited by Luca Gnan, Alessandro Hinna, …
R3,263 Discovery Miles 32 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first volume of the series aims to give an outline of the state of the art and the most recent research being done on public and non profit governance at the international level (with particular emphasis in Europe). The focus of the volume is mainly on the "organizational" governance that still remains "a neglected area of governance" both in the public and in the non-profit sector. The volume includes two groups of chapters aimed at examining the recent trends and the future directions of the public and non-profit governance research. One group of chapters addresses broad issues of how to conceptualize and research 'governance' in public and non-profit organizations. The second group of chapters deals with recent trends of research on governance mechanisms through empirical studies, including contingency and behavioural studies on public and non-profit boards, studies on participative governance mechanisms such as stakeholder involvement and citizens' participation and studies on governance codification.

Engaged Leadership - Transforming through Future-Oriented Design Thinking (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Engaged Leadership - Transforming through Future-Oriented Design Thinking (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Joan Marques, Satinder Dhiman
R1,849 Discovery Miles 18 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This professional book examines the concept of engaged leadership. Specifically, it focuses on the need for leaders in personal and professional realms, for-profit and non-profit, to understand the importance of engagement in order to achieve enhanced satisfaction and motivation among stakeholders (including employees, shareholders, investors, supporters, customers, suppliers, the community, competitors, family, and partners), and hence, an augmented level of designed thinking, which leads to increased innovation and on-going leadership development. Divided into three sections-engaged leadership development at the personal level, implementation at the organizational level, and manifestation in practice-this book provides professionals, practitioners and policy makers as well as students with the tools and skills to lead actively and conscientiously and help them understand the importance of creativity and compassion for development. Engaged leadership operates on the fundamental principle that leaders have to first and foremost perceive themselves as leaders, and then engage in design thinking, as they will need to develop strategies to reach, encourage, and positively appeal to these stakeholder groups. Leadership is neither limited to those holding formal managerial position, nor to any particular setting. Leaders can be found everywhere, in all layers of society. Leadership is only possible, however, if one dares to perceive and define oneself as a leader. And only when leadership is adopted as a reality within one's personal perception, can engaged leadership be applied. Featuring contributions from academics, scholars, and professionals from around the world, each providing cases, interactive questions and reflective notes, this book will be of interest to professionals, practitioners, policy makers, students and scholars interested in creative leadership, management, organizational behavior, and governance.

Ethics for Social Impact - Ethical Decision-Making in Nonprofit Organizations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st... Ethics for Social Impact - Ethical Decision-Making in Nonprofit Organizations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Femida Handy, Allison R. Russell
R4,228 Discovery Miles 42 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book outlines the various elements involved in ethical decision-making for nonprofit leaders, and whose rights to prioritize when facing complex situations. Nonprofit board members and employees are often placed in difficult situations, with no single stakeholder and an allegiance to mission statements whose outcomes can be difficult to measure. While nonprofit charitable organizations are generally considered more trustworthy than their counterparts in the public or for-profit sector, when scandals and wrongdoings are uncovered, they must be dealt with in ethical ways. Through a case study approach, this book delivers clear ethical decision-making frameworks and promotes robust reflection on how to arrive at different decision points and throw light on elements that are often ignored or assumed. Ultimately, it offers students, researchers, and managers a practical approach to the ambiguous question, what is the ethical way?

The authors discuss the advantages of effective stakeholder and change management for HOs, as well as the tensions caused by conflicting institutional logics and ethical conflicts that arise as a result of a violation of the principles of an HO. The book appeals to anyone interested in managing non-governmental organizations more effectively.

Social Entrepreneurship in Non-Profit and Profit Sectors - Theoretical and Empirical Perspectives (Paperback, Softcover reprint... Social Entrepreneurship in Non-Profit and Profit Sectors - Theoretical and Empirical Perspectives (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Marta Peris-Ortiz, Frederic Teulon, Dominique Bonet-Fernandez
R4,327 Discovery Miles 43 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume examines the theoretical and empirical landscape of social entrepreneurship in both non-profit and profit sectors. It extends the traditional view of social entrepreneurship to include the environmental and institutional factors that affect the emergence of social entrepreneurship activities, such as formal laws, regulations, procedures and informal institutions. The editors aim to provide evidence and increased understanding of this growing phenomenon. Social Entrepreneurship is gaining recognition as a key element of economic and social development. It embraces a wide set of situations with a broad scope of activities in for-profit and non-profit organizations interested in social performance and/or in economically profitable performance, with an emphasis on achieving social aim. In the strict sense, social entrepreneurship corresponds to entrepreneurs whose main concern is to achieve social objectives rather than to obtain personal financial profits. However, there is still much to be learned about the dynamics and processes of social entrepreneurship. The current literature in the field has tended to focus on psychological experiences and personal characteristics, or on organizational perspectives such as resources, capabilities and leadership. This book intends to provide theoretical frameworks and empirical studies to this very new and broad field. Specifically, this book provides a collection of contemporary research in the following topics: How to create opportunity through social innovation How to detect entrepreneurial opportunity to meet social needs How to develop social entrepreneurship, while still seeking profits How to discover opportunities for different forms of social entrepreneurship Featuring contributions from around the world, this book is a valuable source for students, academics, researchers, policy makers, and professionals in the area of social entrepreneurship.

Jeffrey Abt
R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the perilous situation that faced the Detroit Institute of Arts during the city's bankruptcy, when creditors considered it a "nonessential asset" that might be sold to settle Detroit's debts. It presents the history of the museum in the context of the social, economic, and political development of Detroit, giving a history of the city as well as of the institution, and providing a model of contextual institutional history. Abt describes how the Detroit Institute of Arts became the fifth largest art museum in America, from its founding as a private non-profit corporation in 1885 to its transformation into a municipal department in 1919, through the subsequent decades of extraordinary collections and facilities growth coupled with the repeated setbacks of government funding cuts during economic downturns. Detroit's 2013 bankruptcy underscored the nearly 130 years of fiscal missteps and false assumptions that rendered the museum particularly vulnerable to the monetary power of a global art investment community eager to capitalize on the city's failures and its creditors' demands. This is a remarkable and important contribution to many fields, including non-profit management and economics, cultural policy, museum and urban history, and the histories of both the Detroit Institute of Arts and the city of Detroit itself. Despite the museum's unique history, its story offers valuable lessons for anyone concerned about the future of art museums in the United States and abroad.

S. Aqeel Tirmizi, John D. Vogelsang
R1,712 Discovery Miles 17 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores leadership and management in social sector organizations, which include, NGOs, non-profits, social enterprises, social businesses, and cross-sector collaborations focusing on advancing human dignity and social justice. It provides social sector leaders with an overview of current trends, issues, and challenges in the field as well as best practices to foster effective programs, sustain organizations and meet the growing demands of the sector. The enclosed chapters cover topics such as cross-sector organizational design, innovation for client services, gender management dynamics, policy advocacy, and the growing social entrepreneurship movement. The social sector is currently in a vibrant, dynamic, and exciting stage. The sector's role and relevance to advancing human dignity and social justice is greater than ever. The number and types of social sector organizations have increased exponentially around the world and are offering extraordinary and much needed contributions toward an array of social issues. The traditional NGOs and non-profit organizations continue to be an integral part of the global civil society. At the same time, the emerging organizational forms under the social entrepreneurship umbrella are providing new momentum and excitement within and outside of the social sector. The interest in social entrepreneurship is encouraging existing social sector entities to actively embrace and encourage innovation. This interest is also inspiring a new breed of professionals and organizations to contribute to the social sector. This trend falls under the larger social sector dynamic promoting the creation of "hybrid" and emergent organizational forms, which cross and combine the traditional non-profit and for-profit domains. Despite the increased interest, the social sector still faces challenges around the world. CIVICUS - an international group promoting civil society organizations and groups-- recently reported a rise in the restrictions on civil society activities in a number of countries through worsening policy and legal environments. Funding challenges for the social sector are thus becoming more significant. At the same time, the calls for social sector accountability and emphasis on results and impact are growing. This book aims to offer approaches and tools which allow for the bridging of demands between creativity and accountability, between inspiration and results, and between gaining individual commitment and shared ownership of agendas and achievements, all of which are needed to effectively operate in the changing social sector.

Katrin Blankenburg
R3,471 Discovery Miles 34 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes how non-profit organisations (NPOs) communicate what they constitute, signal success and display sustainability in order to convince stakeholders to provide essential resources. Reports on intellectual capital offer a worthwhile approach. Based on empirical research, the book highlights the essential resources for NPOs and on the demand imposed on organisations, as well as the dependencies of those resources and demands. This insight helps NPOs to provide necessary information while keeping the disclosure to a minimum and thus not giving away possible competitive advantages. Further, the status-quo of IC disclosure in Germany is presented and a theoretical framework for the motivation for NPOs to disclose information on their IC is presented. Researchers will find these findings a solid foundation for further research. Finally, a framework for the disclosure of intellectual capital is provided to support practitioners.

Chris Brewster, Jean-Luc Cerdin
R3,985 Discovery Miles 39 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Covering human resource management in a number of different kinds of mission-driven organizations, the book explores organizations in sectors and industries such as the governmental and intergovernmental public sector, volunteer organizations and charities, religious organizations, cultural organizations, sports organizations and B-corporations. Recognizing the reality of management practice in the (many small) organizations covered by the book, the chapters deal with the way that people are actually managed whether or not there is an HRM department present. Students of business management and human resource management will find this book invaluable as a source of knowledge on not for profit organizations, as many of the chapters include detailed examples and case studies.
