R1,627 R1,397 Discovery Miles 13 970 Save R230 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Programs that address the transition from practical/vocational nursing to Baccalaureate nursing were virtually nonexistent two years ago; today there are 155 such programs, a number that continues to increase. This is the first text to address the specific educational needs of students transitioning from LPN/LVN to BSN and professional practice. Comprehensive and user-friendly, the text covers every aspect of role transition in the LPN/LVN to BSN course. It is based on the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine's "Future of Nursing" and the "BSN in 10" initiative. The book provides an overview of professional practice at the BSN level and examines the core, role, and skill competencies required for the Baccalaureate-prepared nurse.

The text addresses competence in leadership and management, critical thinking, cultural intelligence, information technology, and professional writing, as well as legal and ethical concerns. It focuses on the role of the RN within an interdisciplinary team, describes the experience of returning to an academic setting, and the challenges of and strategies for accomplishing a successful role transition. Numerous reflective exercises, case vignettes and online case studies reinforce content. Important practice concepts like QSEN and the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice are woven throughout the text. A robust ancillary package includes PowerPoints, online quizzes, reflective questions, and case studies.

Key Features: Comprises the first text to address the specific needs of rapidly growing LPN/LVN to BSN programs Covers every aspect of role transition and defines the higher-level skills required for BSNs Based on recommendations of the Institute of Medicine's "Future of Nursing" and the "BSN in 10" initiative Designed for use in classroom, online, and hybrid courses Incorporates reflective exercises, case studies, PowerPoints, and online quizzes to reinforce content

Nursing Stories - Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey (Hardcover): Pedus C. Eweama Nursing Stories - Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey (Hardcover)
Pedus C. Eweama
R875 Discovery Miles 8 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Each of us has at least once in our lifetime come into contact with nurses of all backgrounds, whether in the course of being cared for or while they care for our family and friends. More often than not, we have seen nurses as what they truly are: compassionate professionals who often go above and beyond the call of duty in an unequivocally selfless manner. But not many of us have taken time to ponder over the challenges nurses confront, the experiences they encounter, and the stories that come with these opportunities to change people's lives and be sometimes changed in the course of doing so.
This book, Nursing Stories: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey, chronicles the challenges nurses face, the camaraderie they share, the experiences they have, and their unfaltering desire to make a difference. Many nurses of diverse specialties working across the globe have, in this book, succinctly told their stories, experiences, and challenges, not only to promote nursing as a profession in which one can make a difference, but also as one in which the difference one makes can help shape one's outlook on life. Every new page in this book highlights that while nurses try to change lives, a lot of them end up being changed themselves.
Nursing Stories: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey is a compilation of actual life-transforming stories that range from subtly hilarious stories to confronting clinical experiences. Some of the stories are intriguing, challenging, inspiring, scary, or outright inconceivable. Welcome to the world of nursing, welcome to Nursing Stories: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Journey.

Handbook of Pediatric Chronic Pain - Current Science and Integrative Practice (Hardcover, 2011): Brenda C. McClain, Santhanam... Handbook of Pediatric Chronic Pain - Current Science and Integrative Practice (Hardcover, 2011)
Brenda C. McClain, Santhanam Suresh
R4,112 Discovery Miles 41 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The purpose of this text is to provide not only the science and current knowledge of pediatric pain management but a rationale for intervention. The book is ground-breaking in that it provides pearls for the recognition and management of multiple childhood chronic pain syndromes. Also, uncommon yet confounding issues such as pain management for epidermolysis bullosa are adequately addressed. Concerns unique to pediatric patients are reviewed. While there are no firm standards in pediatric chronic pain, a care plan is offered to help guide practitioners when possible. The book will consist of 24 chapters, many co-written by a physician and a psychologist. Chapter 1 covers the history of pediatric chronic pain, the advancement pediatric pain as a clinical subspecialty, development of pediatric pain clinics, and characterization of the common pain syndromes. Chapters 2-4 cover, respectively, the research on early pain exposure and neuroplasticity, theories on the common adolescent pain syndromes, and the demographics of chronic pain in children. Chapters 5-16 discuss approaches to assessment and intervention for specific pediatric and adolescent pain syndromes. Chapters 17-23 address interventional techniques such as therapeutic blocks, neurablation, implantable systems, physical therapy, complementary therapy, and pharmacology including opioid tolerance. The final chapter discusses the role of the nurse practitioner in pediatric chronic pain.

Labors of Love - Nursing Homes and the Structures of Care Work (Hardcover): Jason Rodriquez Labors of Love - Nursing Homes and the Structures of Care Work (Hardcover)
Jason Rodriquez
R2,856 Discovery Miles 28 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Every day for the next twenty years, more than 10,000 people in the United States will turn 65. With life expectancies increasing as well, many of these Americans will eventually require round-the-clock attention--and we have only begun to prepare for the challenge of caring for them. In Labors of Love, Jason Rodriquez examines the world of the fast-growing elder care industry, providing a nuanced and balanced portrait of the day-to-day lives of the people and organizations that devote their time to supporting America's aging population. Through extensive ethnographic research, interviews with staff and management, and analysis of internal documents, Rodriquez explores the inner workings of two different nursing homes--one for-profit and one non-profit--to understand the connections among the administrative regulations, the professional requirements, and the type of care provided in both types of facilities. He reveals a variety of challenges that nursing home care workers face day to day: battles over the budget; the administrative hurdles of Medicaid and Medicare; the employees' struggle to balance financial stability and compassionate care for residents. Yet, Rodriquez argues, nursing home workers give meaning and dignity to their work by building emotional attachments to residents and their care. An unprecedented study, Labors of Love brings new insight into the underlying structures of a crucial and expanding sector of the American health care system.

R1,864 Discovery Miles 18 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Must-Have Guide for Navigating the ICU. The House Officer's Guide to ICU Care is an eminently practical handbook for junior house officers, medical students, PAs, and nurses that offers nuts-and-bolts guidelines for optimal management of medical and surgical patients in the ICU setting. Using clear, straightforward language, the authors methodically guide clinicians through the decision-making process, first by outlining the pathophysiology of abnormalities seen in the ICU and then by explaining the principles underlying today's therapeutic measures and describing how these agents and devices are used to ensure safe patient recovery. While the text focuses on the postoperative cardiothoracic surgery patient, the principles and therapies covered are broadly relevant to all medical and general surgery ICU patients. This third edition has been thoroughly updated to include the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies, procedures, and practices, and covers everything the house officer needs to know to deliver safe, effective, front-line care - especially during those times when senior staff are not there to rely on. Updated references, self-assessment tools, and an Emergency Response Sheet of essential paradigms, drugs, and doses will ensure confident decision-making when it counts the most. For the house officer, this book gives you everything you need to know, and not a word more. Especially useful for: house officers and medical students embarking on ICU responsibilities, intensive care nurses and nurses in training physicians' assistants, and respiratory therapists.
