This book considers how Nuclear Medicine treatments have been further developed in the past several years and are now widely applied in clinical practice, especially in oncological patients, in addition to radioiodine therapy for various thyroid diseases. These treatments are very effective when properly indicated, but side effects and complications specifically related to the radioactive drugs and other potential clinical problems should also be considered, since other treatments, e.g. chemotherapy or radiotherapy, are frequently administered before, simultaneously with and/or after radionuclide therapies. Consequently, cumulative toxicities and treatment interactions must be considered, and physicians prescribing treatments should be capable of preventing (when possible) and properly diagnosing and treating such side effects and complications. Accordingly, expertise in radionuclide therapy and extensive clinical expertise are required to appropriately manage critical cases. This book provides essential information on the physiopathology and radiopharmacy of radionuclide treatments and addresses potential side effects and complications by providing a rapid consultation guide for clinicians: synopses, diagnostic flow-charts and treatment schedules for a range of nuclear medicine treatments

Delirium is a complex syndrome with a multifactorial aetiology and is characterized by marked disturbances of consciousness, attention, memory, perception, thought, sleep-wake cycle, and by fluctuation of symptoms. This book covers in detail the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical aspects, differential diagnosis, and management of the syndrome. Due to the special characteristics of the syndrome, specific chapters deal with different aetiologies and populations at risk, with emphasis on the critically ill and palliative care patients. As delirium often announces or anticipates the proximity of death, family issues are considered in a comprehensive final chapter, covering the impact of terminal illness on the family and the process of bereavement. The book emphasises the need for assessing and diagnosing delirium with reliable instruments, and a chapter on assessment is reinforced by including appendices of many of the most relevant instruments reported in recent literature. The evidence from the literature is always distinguished from the authors' opinions and most chapters are integrated by the presentation of case examples. Updated for the second edition this book contains new material on topics including classification systems, more data on populations at risk, and significant new material on the family and bereavement. Delirium: Acute confusional states in palliative medicine, Second Edition demonstrates that only an interdisciplinary treatment of delirium between neurology, psychiatry and palliative medicine can develop knowledge of the syndrome and improve patient and family care. This book has been written for palliative care physicians and specialist nurses, neurologists, psychiatrists, and other health professionals treating terminally ill patients, offering them a clear account of how to recognize and deal with the syndrome.
Although Florence Nightingale is famous as a nurse, her lifetime's writing on nursing and to nurses is scarcely known in the profession. Nursing professors tend to "look to the future, not to the past," and often ignore her or rely on faulty secondary sources.
Volume 12 related the founding of her school at St Thomas' Hospital and her guidance of its teaching for the rest of her life. Volume 13, "Extending Nursing," relates the introduction of professional training and standards outside St Thomas', beginning with London hospitals and others in Britain, followed by hospitals in Europe, America, Australia and Canada. Also presented is material on work in India, Japan and China. The challenge of raising standards in the tough workhouse infirmaries is reported, as is Nightingale's fostering of district nursing. A chronology in this volume provides a convenient overview of Nightingales work on nursing from 1860 to 1900. Both volumes give biographical sketches of key nursing leaders.
