With over 100 years of experience in crafting the finest artist quality canvases, Claessens is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field. Each Claessens canvas undergoes a rigorous treatment and process to meet different requirements for artists.First, all raw canvases are sized with a synthetic PVA glue. For oil primed canvases, the next step involves applying a primer of zinc white paint bound with linseed oil to the glued linen, by means of two knives. The canvas is then put into a drying room for three days where it air-dries naturally. After this first initial drying time, the canvas is then sanded and a coating layer based on titanium white is applied to the canvas by means of two knives and a roller. The canvas is then placed in the drying room for another ten days.Claessens' Oil Primed Canvases are suitable for oil paint. For a full description of the various processes which go into manufacturing a Claessens canvas, click here

There is no water within the formulation of Artisan. The linseed oil and safflower oil vehicles have been modified to allow the colour to accept water, creating a stable emulsion, while retaining the working characteristics of conventional oil colour.Artisan is ideal for:- Oil painters who are sensitive to, or simply want to avoid exposure to solvents such as white spirit (mineral spirits) or turpentine. Students and teachers in schools and colleges where the use of oil colour is prohibited because of the solvents. For travel, all Artisan products (Colour & Mediums) can be transported on aeroplanes (subject to the agreement of the airline). Diluted with distilled water, PVA size is a contemporary size for fabric support. Conservation scientists recommend painters use neutral pH PVA size on linen and canvas instead of rabbit skin glue. PVA provides a good size layer that seals the fabric but does not re-absorb atmospheric moisture, swell and shrink like rabbit skin glue does. There are hundreds of different formulae of PVA. We acknowledge and appreciate the research of the Canadian Conservation Institute that helps painters and conservators identify the best PVA to use. Gamblin PVA Size is made from PVA that has a neutral pH and does not yellow. It also retains its flexibility and does not emit harmful volatiles.
Torrit Grey is a unique colour to Gamblin Artist Colours. Every spring, the Torit® Air Filtration system which is used by Gamblin to filter the air around the areas where dry pigments are handled is cleared and the excess pigment is collected. Rather than discarding the high quality, expensive pigments, Gamblin paint makers recycle them into a paint shade they have named Gamblin Torrit Grey. The mix of pigments differs from year to year depending on the strength of the pigments and what paints sold well the year before and so Torrit Grey is always unique and no two years are ever the same, therefore the colour can never be repeated.Torrit Grey tends to have a greenish tinge because of the great strength of the Phthalo Green pigment, which is a dark bluish green. Torrit Grey varies from a medium dove grey to a dark earthy grey - useful for muting bright tones. It can be mixed with white to produce a pale, neutral grey. This is a 37ml sample of Gamblin Artist Oil Paint in Torrit Grey. |
