Materia Medica for Various Cancers (Hardcover, 2012): William C.S. Cho Materia Medica for Various Cancers (Hardcover, 2012)
William C.S. Cho
R5,205 Discovery Miles 52 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cancer is one of the leading killers in the world and the incidence is increasing, but most cancer patients and cancer survivors suffer much from the disease and its conventional treatments' side effects. In the past, clinical data showed that some complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) possessed anticancer abilities, but some clinicians and scientists have queried about the scientific validity of CAM due to the lack of scientific evidence. There is great demand in the knowledge gap to explore the scientific and evidence-based knowledge of CAM in the anticancer field. With this aim, a book series is needed to structurally deliver the knowledge to readers. There have been a number of publications on materia medica for various cancers in recent years, the scientific and medical community are thrust for up-to-date information that are supported by concrete laboratory evidences or clinical trials. This volume is a specialised book presenting the experimental and clinical evidences of anticancer materia medica for various cancers. This book consists of sixteen chapters, providing concise reviews and expert opinions on the recent progress of materia medica research in fourteen particular cancers from bench to bedside application. In addition, the book also includes a chapter with an overview of evidence-based materia medica for cancer chemoprevention, as well as a chapter discussing on the pharmacokinetics of anticancer materia medica. Gathering international opinion leaders' views, this volume will contribute great to the cancer, academic, and clinical community by providing evidence-based information on the anticancer effects of materia medica for various cancers. Readership Oncologists, cancer researchers, pharmacologists, pharmaceutical specialists, Chinese medicine practitioners, medical educators, postgraduates and advanced undergraduates in biomedical disciplines, cancer caregivers, cancer patients.

Breast and Gynecological Cancers - An Integrated Approach for Screening and Early Diagnosis in Developing Countries (Hardcover,... Breast and Gynecological Cancers - An Integrated Approach for Screening and Early Diagnosis in Developing Countries (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Mahesh K. Shetty
R4,893 Discovery Miles 48 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Low- and middle-income countries have seen a dramatic rise in the incidence of breast and gynecological cancers in the past decade. Organized cancer screening programs are not widely available in developing countries, leading to disproportionately higher mortality rates compared to those in the developed world. This book addresses cost-effective strategies for implementing programs aimed at screening for the early detection of breast, cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancers. A well woman clinic concept providing such services as part of women's health examinations is proposed, aiming to ensure patient compliance by limiting clinic visits required for initial testing and diagnosis of screen positive cases.

Hyaluronan in Cancer Biology (Hardcover): Robert Stern Hyaluronan in Cancer Biology (Hardcover)
Robert Stern
R1,519 Discovery Miles 15 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hyaluronan biology is being recognized as an important regulator of cancer progression. Paradoxically, both hyaluronan (HA) and hyaluronidases, the enzymes that eliminate HA, have also been correlated with cancer progression. Hyaluronan, a long-chain polymer of the extracellular matrix, opens up tissue spaces through which cancer cells move and metastasize. It also confers motility upon cells through interactions of cell-surface HA with the cytoskeleton. Embryonic cells in the process of movement and proliferation use the same strategy. It is an example of how cancer cells have commandeered normal cellular processes for their own survival and spread. There are also parallels between cancer and wound healing, cancer occasionally being defined as a wound that does not heal.
The growing body of literature regarding this topic has recently progressed from describing the association of hyaluronan and hyaluronidase expression associated with different cancers, to understanding the mechanisms that drive tumor cell activation, proliferation, drug resistance, etc. No one source, however, discusses hyaluronan synthesis and catabolism, as well as the factors that regulate the balance. This book offers a comprehensive summary and cutting-edge insight into Hyaluronan biology, the role of the HA receptors, the hyaluronidase enzymes that degrade HA, as well as HA synthesis enzymes and their relationship to cancer.

DNA Tumor Viruses (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Blossom Damania, James Pipas DNA Tumor Viruses (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Blossom Damania, James Pipas
R5,313 Discovery Miles 53 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

DNA Tumor Viruses will focus on the DNA viruses in the human population that are associated with cancers. It will cover most of the viruses that are thought to contribute to human malignancy.

This book will represent a comprehensive review of the field of DNA tumor virology. Right now, while there are books out there that cover individual viruses that will be also covered in this book, there is no single book that covers this topic comprehensively.

The main textbook in this market, Fields, which is referred to by both reviewers, covers some of these topics but on a lower level. The only two books that are nearly as comprehensive as this one are Human Tumor Viruses, which was published by the American Society for Microbiology in 1998 and is quite outdated, and Viruses, Cell Transformation, and Cancer, which was published by Elsevier in 2001. Our book will be the only current, comprehensive review of its kind in the market.

Mukesh Verma
R5,324 Discovery Miles 53 240 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Population studies and epidemiology facilitate the discovery of genetic and environmental determinants of cancer and the development of new approaches to cancer control and prevention, therefore they play a central role in the creation of health policies. Cancer Epidemiology compiles areas of research which cover etiological factors or determinants that contribute to the development of cancer and describe the the latest technologies in cancer epidemiology. In Volume 2, Modifiable Factors, leading experts provide chapters on modifiable factors in cancer epidemiology, epidemiology of organ specific cancer, and environmental and life style factors. Although a non-standard volume of the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology (TM) series, this comprehensive text retains the commitment of the series to collecting the kind of detailed, up-to-date information and implementation advice that is crucial for getting optimal results. Cutting-edge and essential, Cancer Epidemiology allows readers to get the maximum advantage of the methods involved in this exciting and important field.

Asymmetric Cell Division in Development, Differentiation and Cancer (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Jean-Pierre Tassan, Jacek Z.... Asymmetric Cell Division in Development, Differentiation and Cancer (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Jean-Pierre Tassan, Jacek Z. Kubiak
R5,797 Discovery Miles 57 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides readers with an overview of the frequent occurrence of asymmetric cell division. Employing a broad range of examples, it highlights how this mode of cell division constitutes the basis of multicellular organism development and how its misregulation can lead to cancer. To underline such developmental correlations, readers will for example gain insights into stem cell fate and tumor growth. In turn, subsequent chapters include descriptions of asymmetric cell division from unicellular organisms to humans in both physiological and pathological conditions. The book also illustrates the importance of this process for evolution and our need to understand the background mechanisms, offering a valuable guide not only for students in the field of developmental biology but also for experienced researchers from neighboring fields.
