After an extraordinary four-year battle, Gabi Lowe lost her beautiful, talented 20-year-old daughter, Jenna Lowe, on 8 June 2015 to pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare degenerative lung disease, following a double lung transplant.
Jenna was young, bright and articulate. She was LEAD SA’s Youth Hero of the Year in 2015. Her death was mourned by thousands of people whose lives she had touched. During her short but full life, Jenna and the Lowe family raised much-needed awareness around this rare and devastating disease, highlighting the dire need for access to medication and organ donors locally. Although desperately ill, Jenna became the face for organ donation in South Africa through the hugely successful #GetMeTo21 campaign in which she invited all South Africans to attend her twenty-first birthday celebration by clicking on a link to become an organ donor. Tragically, Jenna died four months before reaching her milestone.
Brilliantly written, riveting in all its terrible truth and pain, in this brutally honest memoir Gabi Lowe shares her family’s desperate fight to save Jenna’s life. Get Me to 21 will inspire us to believe that the ability to face even the darkest, and most unimaginable, lives deep within us all.

When Lauren Segal receives a call from her husband one wintry morning in 2014, the furthest thing from her mind is her biopsy results. For two years she’s been living a cancer-free existence after a double mastectomy that has put her in the clear. The call shatters the foundation of her world – the lump she thought was scar tissue is malignant. Her cancer is back.
Cancer: A Love Story is the intimately searing memoir of a four-time cancer survivor. The book magnificently tracks Lauren’s journey to come to terms with the untold challenges of facing the dreaded disease. Forced to face her needle phobia, the author leads the reader into her crumbling world as she confronts the terrors of treatment – from debilitating chemo to nuking radiation. Death is her uninvited companion.
But in the midst of her lonely horror, in a quest for deeper meaning, Lauren discovers the unexpected gift of awareness of unanticipated opportunities that cancer presents – to confront her unmasked humanity – her fears, strengths and weaknesses.
“Throughout my arduous journey into the world of cancer, I have discovered that proximity to death brings with it a new proximity to life. I have learned that luck and unluck, happiness and distress, hope and despair are tightly coiled into a life well lived.” Lauren’s story removes the enormous stigma that still surrounds breast cancer; it tackles the deep fear surrounding diagnoses and treatment and it encourages us to take control of our health. It ultimately triumphs by showing the reader how a person in any unwanted life situation can come out on the other side. The book also provides vital insights for professionals involved in the care of cancer patients and a hugely informative section on chemo tips for those undergoing treatment.

Sharing the latest on lifestyle choices that impact your risk factor including food, supplements, hormones and exercise, Dr. Funk demonstrates that you are so much more in control of whether or not you get breast cancer than you could ever dare to think. In fact, unless you carry a genetic mutation associated with breast cancer, the choices you make in your-day-to-day life trumps genetics and family history when it comes to breast cancer risk, every time. Including a unique long-term risk reduction plan for every woman based on her needs, as well as the latest on diagnosis and treatment for women living with and surviving breast cancer, and with a heartfelt Foreword from longtime patient Sheryl Crow, this is a book with a life-saving message for the 1 in 8 women, at the time of writing, who are set to be diagnosed in their lifetime.
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER The inspirational memoir from the founder of the You, Me and the Big C podcast, Rachael Bland. Courageous and life-affirming, this is a mother's final gift to her son. My beautiful son, I so wish that I didn't have to leave you now. But believe me, I tried EVERYTHING I could to stay around for you, and for every moment I could eke out of this life. From the outset, it was not a fair fight. My cancer was too big, and too aggressive, and we didn't start on a level playing field. You were fourteen months old and at the beginning I was so full of fierce intention that we could get past this. I would lay you in your cot each night and silently communicate from my mind to yours, `I will do this Freddie, I will gladly take whatever they throw at me if it means we can stay together'. In 2016, beloved broadcaster and journalist Rachael Bland was diagnosed with cancer. Shortly afterwards she made the brave decision to share her story, and she spoke with beautiful poignancy through her blog and podcast, You, Me and the Big C. Having been told that she only had a matter of months left to live and writing this in what were sadly her final days, Rachael brings her warmth, courage and humour to the page in this heart-warming and heart-breaking story. Part memoir, part advice, For Freddie beautifully encapsulates the grace and fearlessness in which Rachael lived her life. This is her legacy and an incredible final gift to her son. Includes moving contributions from Richard Bacon, Tony Livesey, Emma Barnett, Shelagh Fogarty, Mark Pougatch, Chris Stark and many more.

All of the authors are experts from Europe and North America and the book has been written specifically as an easy reference for the practising clinician and the research scientist. It lays the basis for understanding the future direction of clinical and translational research to improve outcomes in patients with childhood renal tumors and will prove indispensable for those treating or researching into these diseases.
SPECT/CT cameras have considerably improved diagnostic accuracy in recent years. Such cameras allow direct correlation of anatomic and functional information, resulting in better localization and definition of scintigraphic findings. In addition to this anatomic referencing, CT coregistration provides superior quantification of radiotracer uptake based on the attenuation correction capabilities of CT. Useful applications of SPECT/CT have been identified not only in oncology but also in other specialties such as orthopedics and cardiology. This book covers the full spectrum of clinical applications of SPECT/CT in diagnosis and therapy planning of benign and malignant diseases. Opening chapters discuss the technology and physics of SPECT/CT and its use for dosimetry. The role of SPECT/CT in the imaging of a range of pathologic conditions is then addressed in detail. Applications covered include, among others, imaging of the thyroid, bone, and lungs, imaging of neuroendocrine tumors, cardiac scintigraphy, and sentinel node scintigraphy. Individual chapters are also devoted to therapy planning in selective internal radiation therapy of liver tumors and bremsstrahlung SPECT/CT. Readers will find this book to be an essential and up-to-date source of information on this invaluable hybrid imaging technique.

The Atlas of Contrast-Enhanced Sonography of Focal Liver Lesions will serve as an invaluable hands-on tool for practitioners who need to diagnose liver lesions using CEUS in the major clinical settings: oncology patients, cirrhotic patients, and patients with incidental focal liver lesions.
Kidney Cancer: Principles and Practice is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary textbook that encompasses all clinically relevant aspects of the disease. This new edition has been extensively updated and includes brand new material covering the most recent developments in kidney cancer diagnosis and therapy. The user-friendly and clinically oriented content of the book guarantees that it will be of great interest to a wide range of medical professionals, and every effort has been made to ensure that contributions are both easy to understand and directly related to patient care. Content presentation departs from the usual dense chapter format featuring a lengthy series of paragraphs. Instead, each chapter contains several boxed sections, including one that summarizes essential "take home points" for the busy clinician and another that presents a patient-oriented case highlighting the clinical application of elements discussed in that chapter. In addition, accessible original images, illustrations, and diagrams (some in full color) are used to simplify particularly complex material. This book will be of value for clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and knowledgeable lay people. The contributors comprise an international group of authors with expertise in kidney cancer epidemiology, molecular biology, pathology, diagnosis, clinical features, staging, prognostic and predictive factors, surgery, systemic therapy, and emerging investigational approaches, among others.
This is the first textbook of its kind devoted to describing the biological complexities of breast cancer in a way that is relevant to the radiation oncologist. Radiation Oncology has long treated breast cancer as a single biological entity, with all treatment decisions being based on clinical and pathologic risk factors. We are now beginning to understand that biological subtypes of breast cancer may have different risks of recurrence as well as different intrinsic sensitivity to radiotherapy. Multi-gene arrays that have for years been used to predict the risk of distant recurrence and the value of systemic chemotherapy may also have utility in predicting the risk of local recurrence. Additionally, the targeted agents used to treat breast cancer may interact with radiotherapy in ways that can be beneficial or undesirable. All of these emerging issues are extensively discussed in this book, and practical evidence-based treatment recommendations are presented whenever possible.
This richly illustrated volume describes the performance of total and subtotal gastrectomy with extended D2 lymphadenectomy by providing a detailed step-by-step guide to both manual and mechanical procedures. Gastric cancer is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer and the second most common cancer-related cause of death worldwide, and surgery remains the only potentially curative treatment. Although several aspects of surgical management are still controversial, all guidelines for the treatment of curable gastric cancer recommend subtotal gastrectomy (for tumors located in the antrum and corpus) or total gastrectomy (for tumors located in the fundus) with extended D2 lymphadenectomy. Various technical tips and secrets are revealed that serve to simplify the procedure and simultaneously make it more effective: by rendering esophagojejunal and gastrojejunal anastomosis more secure, the risk of leakage is minimized. High-quality intraoperative color photographs and drawings covering all steps facilitate understanding of these complex operations and will prove an invaluable tool for surgeons, residents and professionals in the field.
Cancer Immunology is intended as an up-to-date, clinically relevant review of cancer immunology and immunotherapy. This volume focuses on the immunopathology and immunotherapy of organ cancers in detail. It clearly explains their immunology and describes novel immunotherapy for specific cancers, including pediatric solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, gastrointestinal tumors, skin cancers, bone and connective tissue tumors, central nervous system tumors, lung cancers, genitourinary tract tumors and breast cancers. In so doing, it builds on the previous two volumes in Cancer Immunology, placing basic knowledge on tumor immunology and immunotherapy into a clinical perspective with the aim of educating clinicians on advances in cancer immunology and the most recent approaches in the immunotherapy of various tumors. This translational, clinically oriented book will be of special value to clinical immunologists, hematologists and oncologists.
