The cornea is the clear, outer layer at the front of the eyeball.
It acts as a window to the eye. The cornea helps to focus light
rays onto the retina, this image is then transmitted to the brain.
When the cornea is damaged, it can become less transparent or its
shape can change. This can prevent light reaching the retina and
causes the picture transmitted to the brain to be distorted or
unclear. A corneal transplant, also known as keratoplasty or a
corneal graft, is an operation to remove all or part of a damaged
cornea and replace it with healthy donor tissue. It is used to
improve sight, relieve pain and treat severe infection or damage.
One of the most common reasons for a cornea transplant is a
condition called keratoconus, which causes the cornea to change
shape. (NHS.UK) This book is a guide to corneal transplantation
(keratoplasty) for ophthalmic surgeons. Divided into seven
sections, the text begins with an overview of evolution,
preoperative considerations, and eye banking. The following
sections cover a multitude of keratoplasty techniques, including
endothelial keratoplasty, and their potential complications. The
book concludes with discussion on alternatives to corneal
transplantation. The third edition of this comprehensive manual has
been fully revised, with new topics added, to provide surgeons with
the latest advances in the field. A selection of operative videos
can be accessed via a QR code provided in the book. The previous
edition (9788184488593) published in 2010.

A crash course in marketing for eye care professionals, Grow Your
Eye Care Practice: High Impact Pearls from the Marketing Experts
guides readers through this crucial area of business development.
With an increase in patients undergoing elective procedures and an
increase in the amount of providers, marketing has become the most
important way for eye care professionals to grow their practices
and differentiate themselves from their competition. Since
marketing is not addressed in any formal course in medical school,
optometry school, residency or fellowship, many eye care
professionals lack basic understanding and skills in this area of
growing importance to their businesses. To meet this critical need,
editor Dr. Ming Wang and associate editors Shareef Mahdavi, Michael
Malley and Dr. Tracy Swartz have created this essential, timely
handbook aggregating the key ophthalmic marketing pearls, teachings
and experiences of some of the leading national and international
marketing experts. Grow Your Eye Care Practice begins with an
overview of the history and current state of ophthalmic marketing,
including a fascinating look at the commoditization of eye care as
was demonstrated with the introduction of LASIK. The core chapters
address foundational and innovative marketing concepts and their
application to eye care, including: Market research, segmentation,
targeting and positioning Patient experience Branding versus call
to action Word of mouth referrals Digital marketing, including
social media, websites and SEO Innovative marketing approaches

Since the last Edition of Ophthalmology Examinations Review, there
has been major new discovery in the understanding of common eye
diseases, and new treatments and diagnostic procedures have been
refined or newly developed.A revised Edition reflecting these
changes is warranted at this time. The aim and scope of the book
will be consistent with the previous two editions in that it will
provide a broad review for the final year ophthalmology resident
and trainees taking the specialist ophthalmology examinations. The
book deals primarily with key facts and topics that are important
from an examination perspective. Only information and facts that
are considered relevant and critical to the exams are covered, with
topics that may be of scientific interest, but are not common to
exams specifically left out. This book will help the resident
organize and synthesize knowledge acquired from various other
sources or textbooks. While not meant to replace standard
textbooks, enough information is contained within the book to serve
as the main revision text nearer the exams. The style and format of
this book is intentionally didactic, with questions and short
answers. The answer includes a 'model opening statement,' followed
by a classification system to aid organization of facts and then by
the bulk of the answer in concise short notes. Exam Tips are
inserted to provide an insight into how to answer different types
of questions and when appropriate, a Clinical Approach section is
also included. In the new edition, topics such as new understanding
of disease mechanisms, new investigations (e.g. OCT), and new
procedures and treatment (e.g. use of anti-vascular endothelial
growth factors, new refractive surgical techniques, new corneal
transplant) are covered.
The atlas of the Light and Specular Microscopy of the Cornea,
particularly of the corneal endothelium presents photographs of
healthy and pathological corneas, as well as corneas prepared for
grafting. Photographs are taken from donor or patient's corneas.
The first part section of the atlas shows healthy corneas and its
particular layers: the epithelium (superficial and basal cells,
subepithelial nerve plexus), stroma and keratocytes, and the
endothelium. Blood vessels or palisades of Vogt in limbus are shown
as well. The second part section that shows corneas processed for
grafting is focused focuses on the endothelial layer. Main causes
of exclusion of corneas from grafting, such as the presence of dead
cells, polymeghatism, pleomorphism, cornea guttata or stromal scars
have been shown. The third part section of the atlas shows corneas
before and after storage in tissue cultures or hypothermic
conditions with the aim to assess its suitability of for tissue for
grafting. The last final section contains photographs of
pathological corneal explants
This book will contain the proceedings of the XIV International
Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (RD2010), held July 13-17, 2010,
in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The volume will present
representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of
retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic,
diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell
death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of
molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures
such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential
pharmaceutical therapy.
This book has been conceived to aid eye care practitioners such as
ophthalmologists and optometrists as well as other eye care or
research professionals such as biologists, biochemists and medical
doctors interested in the Ocular Surface. This text is divided into
four main sections. The first section is dedicated towards the
anatomy and physiology of the ocular surface (defining ocular
surface concept, tear film structure, corneal and conjunctival
anatomy, etc.). The second section covers the most common ocular
surface disorders (dry eye, anterior and posterior blepharitis,
keratitis, ocular allergy, cicatricial conjunctivitis, and the
ocular surface alterations related with Glaucoma treatment). The
third section delineates the therapeutic care of these disorders,
including topical, systemic and surgical treatment options and the
fourth section addresses the relationship of the ocular surface and
contact lenswear (describing the indications for contact lenses
wear, their complications and managing the adverse effects related
with contact lens-wear).

In our world of information overload, there is an increasing
struggle to keep the main thing the main thing. Fundamental OSCE
Guide in Ophthalmology is a concise study guide presented in a
direct, exam style question and answer format, illustrated with
high quality clinically relevant photographs tailored to medical
students, nurses, optometrists and residents in their early
ophthalmology training. This book provides invaluable guidance to
readers in presenting their answers in a logical, succinct and
elegant manner. The style and format have been intentionally
designed to simulate examination conditions and to provide readers
with ample practice in preparation for the
examinations.Ophthalmology is a very specialized field with many
textbooks providing a wealth of information. Exposure to
ophthalmology is limited in most undergraduate interactions to a
few weeks at best. With a shortage of time, gaining a good
understanding of what is important is overwhelming. This book helps
to streamline and focus knowledge of readers in understanding the
essential conditions in ophthalmology.Various other texts on
ophthalmology are often in prose and covers a wide range of topics,
including the esoteric conditions. To the untrained eye, it is
difficult to discern what should be focused on. Students are often
times excited about knowing rare conditions and spend precious time
and effort remembering details of these conditions without a strong
foundation of the more common conditions seen day to day. This
books not only highlights the important conditions, it is
structured to simulate examination conditions and can be used as a
self-testing tool.
