R5,488 Discovery Miles 54 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The study of antigen presenting cells being established within the human eye is universal knowledge, however, on going research has shown us that antigen-presenting cells play a key role in the protection against and the encouragement of disease within the human eye. It has also been shown that antigen presenting cells have a conclusive role in various ocular disorders, including but not limited to, glaucoma, infections, inflammation, and age related macular degeneration. With proof that interactions between T-cells and antigen-presenting cells can result in an immunological tolerance, future therapies are guaranteed to target antigen presenting cells to reduce the immune tolerance to the structure of the eye. Within this text, you will find description based chapters, with current up to date knowledge, explaining the role of antigen-presenting cells and each key ocular disorder relating to them.

R2,421 Discovery Miles 24 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It has been suspected since more than a century that disturbed ocular blood flow (OBF) may play a role in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Reduced OBF has been measured in glaucoma patients by numberless centres with different techniques in different tissues of the eye. And reduced OBF has been proven to be of prognostic value. Nevertheless the implementation of this knowledge into clinical practice has been very slow.

This practical book will help many ophthalmologists to better understand glaucoma. The reading of this book will not only improve patient care but also give the reader intellectual satisfaction.

Retinal Degenerative Diseases - Mechanisms and Experimental Therapy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): John D. Ash, Robert E. Anderson,... Retinal Degenerative Diseases - Mechanisms and Experimental Therapy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
John D. Ash, Robert E. Anderson, Matthew M LaVail, Catherine Bowes Rickman, Joe G Hollyfield, …
R7,774 Discovery Miles 77 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The blinding diseases of inherited retinal degenerations have no treatments, and age-related macular degeneration has no cures, despite the fact that it is an epidemic among the elderly, with 1 in 3-4 affected by the age of 70. The RD Symposium will focus on the exciting new developments aimed at understanding these diseases and providing therapies for them. Since most major scientists in the field of retinal degenerations attend the biennial RD Symposia, they are known by most as the "best" and "most important" meetings in the field. The volume will present representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic, diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential pharmaceutical therapy. While advances in these areas of retinal degenerations will be described, there will be many new topics that either were in their infancy or did not exist at the time of the last RD Symposium, RD2014. These include the role of inflammation and immunity, as well as other basic mechanisms, in age-related macular degeneration, several new aspects of gene therapy, and revolutionary new imaging and functional testing that will have a huge impact on the diagnosis and following the course of retinal degenerations, as well as to provide new quantitative endpoints for clinical trials. The retina is an approachable part of the central nervous system (CNS), and there is a major interest in neuroprotective and gene therapy for CNS diseases and neurodegenerations, in general. It should be noted that with successful and exciting initial clinical trials in neuroprotective and gene therapy, including the restoration of sight in blind children, the retinal degeneration therapies are leading the way towards new therapeutic measures for neurodegenerations of the CNS. Many of the successes recently reported in these areas of retinal degeneration sprang from collaborations established at previous RD Symposia, and many of those will be reported at the RD2018 meeting and included in the proposed volume. We anticipate the excitement of those working in the field and those afflicted with retinal degenerations will be reflected in the volume.

John D. Lambris, Anthony P. Adamis
R5,148 Discovery Miles 51 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Numerous studies have pointed to the key role of complement in the pathogenesis of retinal disease, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Reports about new gene associations and links to other physiological pathways are emerging almost on a weekly base. Several promising clinical candidates covering a wide area of potential treatment applications are in the pipelines of both industrial and academic groups. This indicates an increasing interest in complement as a therapeutic target. In view of these exciting discoveries, scientists from around the world convened at the First Aegean Conferences Conference on Inflammation and Retinal Disease: Complement Biology and Pathology (June 10-17, 2007) in Crete, Greece, to discuss recent advances in this rapidly-evolving field. This volume represents a collection of topics on the functions of complement in eye diseases, pathophysiology, protein structures, and complement therapeutics discussed during the conference. Our sincere thanks to the contributing authors for the time and effort they have devoted to writing what I consider exceptionally informative chapters in a book that will have a significant impact on the complement field. We would also like to express my thanks to Rodanthi Lambris for her assistance in collating the chapters and preparing the documents for publication and I gratefully acknowledge the generous help provided by Dimitrios Lambris in managing the organization of this meeting. Finally, I also thank Andrea Macaluso of Springer Publishers for her supervision in this book's production. John D. Lambris Anthony P.

Brain and Visual Perception - The Story of a 25-year Collaboration (Hardcover, New): David H. Hubel, Torsten N. Wiesel Brain and Visual Perception - The Story of a 25-year Collaboration (Hardcover, New)
David H. Hubel, Torsten N. Wiesel
R2,509 Discovery Miles 25 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Scientists' understanding of two central problems in neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy has been greatly influenced by the work of David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel: (1) What is it to see? This relates to the machinery that underlies visual perception. (2) How do we acquire the brain's mechanisms for vision? This is the nature-nurture question as to whether the nerve connections responsible for vision are innate or whether they develop through experience in the early life of an animal or human. This is a book about the collaboration between Hubel and Wiesel, which began in 1958, lasted until about 1982, and led to a Nobel Prize in 1981. It opens with short autobiographies of both men, describes the state of the field when they started, and tells about the beginnings of their collaboration. It emphasizes the importance of various mentors in their lives, especially Stephen W. Kuffler, who opened up the field by studying the cat retina in 1950, and founded the department of neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, where most of their work was done. The main part of the book consists of Hubel and Wiesel's most important publications. Each reprinted paper is preceded by a foreword that tells how they went about the research, what the difficulties and the pleasures were, and whether they felt a paper was important and why. Each is also followed by an afterword describing how the paper was received and what developments have occurred since its publication. The reader learns things that are often absent from typical scientific publications, including whether the work was difficult, fun, personally rewarding, exhilarating, or just plain tedious. The book ends with a summing-up of the authors'view of the present state of the field. This is much more than a collection of reprinted papers. Above all it tells the story of an unusual scientific collaboration that was hugely enjoyable and served to transform an entire branch of neurobiology. It will appeal to neuroscientists, vision scientists, biologists, psychologists, physicists, historians of science, and to their students and trainees, at all levels from high school on, as well as anyone else who is interested in the scientific process.
