This book contains 300 multiple choice questions (MCQs), in the format of a single best answer (SBA) from four options, for undergraduate medical students preparing for the Duke Elder prize exam run by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) annually.The content is organised in line with topics drawn from the candidate information pack provided by the RCOphth. The desire to teach and the fulfillment attained from teaching have again prompted us to produce a work that we hope is both useful and enlightening to our readers. The field of oculoplastic surgery has grown and evolved to include all aspects of eyelid and facial plastic surgery. Our literature must now reflect the advancements and - rection of our field. Knowledge of anatomy, the basis of all surgery and the root of surgical principles and techniques, supports our ab- ity to deliver the highest quality care to our patients. We have therefore combined text and diagrams and supplemented them with DVD digital video technology to enable those who wish to perform this surgery the best possible instruction and preparation. We hope that our attempts to accomplish this will be rewarded by the use of this material by colleagues and the acknowledgment of our unique and logical progression in the field of eyelid and facial pl- tic surgery. I have been asked to write a brief foreword to this volume honoring Hisako Ikeda, providing a review of the accomplishments in our field over the past four decades, when Hisako was an active participant. This I am delighted to do. It has been a most exciting time in vision research and Hisako has been right in the middle of much of the excitement, publishing on a wide variety of topics and providing much new data and many new insights. Hisako's research career can be divided by decades into four quite distinct areas of inquiry. In the 1950s, as a student in Japan, her research interests were psychophysical in nature, and she was concerned with visual illusions, figural aftereffects, and motion detec tion. In the 1960s, after her move to London, she began electrophysiological studies. Much of her work in the 1960s was concerned with the electroretinogram (ERG), its components, and the use of this electrical response for evaluating spectral sensitivities of the eye and retinal degenerations. This work represented the beginning of her electrodiagnostic clinical work, which continued until her retirement."

Since the last Edition of Ophthalmology Examinations Review, there has been major new discovery in the understanding of common eye diseases, and new treatments and diagnostic procedures have been refined or newly developed. A revised Edition reflecting these changes is warranted at this time. The aim and scope of the book will be consistent with the previous two editions in that it will provide a broad review for the final year ophthalmology resident and trainees taking the specialist ophthalmology examinations. The book deals primarily with key facts and topics that are important from an examination perspective. Only information and facts that are considered relevant and critical to the exams are covered, with topics that may be of scientific interest, but are not common to exams specifically left out. This book will help the resident organize and synthesize knowledge acquired from various other sources or textbooks. While not meant to replace standard textbooks, enough information is contained within the book to serve as the main revision text nearer the exams. The style and format of this book is intentionally didactic, with questions and short answers.
