The Good Germans - Resisting the Nazis, 1933-1945 (Paperback): Catrine Clay The Good Germans - Resisting the Nazis, 1933-1945 (Paperback)
Catrine Clay
R297 R273 Discovery Miles 2 730 Save R24 (8%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

After 1933, as the brutal terror regime took hold, most of the two-thirds of Germans who had never voted for the Nazis - some 20 million people - tried to keep their heads down and protect their families. They moved to the country, or pretended to support the regime to avoid being denounced by neighbours, and tried to work out what was really happening in the Reich, surrounded as they were by Nazi propaganda and fake news. They lived in constant fear. Yet many ordinary Germans found the courage to resist. Catrine Clay argues that it was a much greater number than was ever formally recorded. Her ground-breaking book focuses on six very different characters. They are not seen in isolation but as part of their families. Each experiences the momentous events of Nazi history as they unfold in their own small lives - Good Germans all.

The Big Show - New Zealanders, D-Day and the War in Europe (Paperback): Alison Parr The Big Show - New Zealanders, D-Day and the War in Europe (Paperback)
Alison Parr
R649 Discovery Miles 6 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

More than 10,000 New Zealand servicemen were on active duty with the RAF and the Royal Navy at the time of the D-Day landings, in June 1944. Until now, the role played by these men has been largely untold. The Big Show provides the first eye witness account of their experience at the heart of the European War. Many of the men retain vivid memories of the historic turning point in WWII. They not only witnessed fear, mayhem and exhilaration of D-Day itself, but they were present as the Allies fought back France, Belgium and Holland from the Axis forces. Some took part in the occupation of Germany that ended the war in Europe; a few saw Belsen Concentration Camp in its final months. There were airmen who were shot down over France and whose escapes to safety were engineered by the French Resistance, and others taken prisoners by the Germans. The men also discuss daily life in the forces, the glamour of serving with the RAF, and wartime London. The Big Show reveals these experiences for a new generation through 13 oral histories recorded by servicemen. Presented for the general market, the book will be lavishly illustrated with over 100 photographs. It will include an introduction, suggested further readings, a foreword from the New Zealand Prime Minster and possibly one from the French PM. The Big Show will be one of the first projects completed under a Shared Memory Arrangement that the New Zealand and French governments signed in 2004 to promote the heritage the countries share with respect to the world wars. It will be in stores for the anniversary of D-Day in June .

Of Land, Bones, and Money - Toward a South African Ecopoetics (Paperback): Emily McGiffin Of Land, Bones, and Money - Toward a South African Ecopoetics (Paperback)
Emily McGiffin
R972 R893 Discovery Miles 8 930 Save R79 (8%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The South African literature of iimbongi, the oral poets of the amaXhosa people, has long shaped understandings of landscape and history and offered a forum for grappling with change. Of Land, Bones, and Money examines the shifting role of these poets in South African society and the ways in which they have helped inform responses to segregation, apartheid, the injustices of extractive capitalism, and contemporary politics in South Africa. Emily McGiffin first discusses the history of the amaXhosa people and the environment of their homelands before moving on to the arrival of the British, who began a relentless campaign annexing land and resources in the region. Drawing on scholarship in the fields of human geography, political ecology, and postcolonial ecocriticism, she considers isiXhosa poetry in translation within its cultural, historical, and environmental contexts, investigating how these poems struggle with the arrival and expansion of the exploitation of natural resources in South Africa and the entrenchment of profoundly racist politics that the process entailed. In contemporary South Africa, iimbongi remain a respected source of knowledge and cultural identity. Their ongoing practice of producing complex, spiritually rich literature continues to have a profound social effect, contributing directly to the healing and well-being of their audiences, to political transformation, and to environmental justice.

Voices From the Other Side - An Oral History of Terrorism Against Cuba (Paperback): Keith Bolender Voices From the Other Side - An Oral History of Terrorism Against Cuba (Paperback)
Keith Bolender
R682 Discovery Miles 6 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the early 1960s, no other country has endured more acts of terrorism against civilian targets than Cuba, and the US has had its hand in much of it. This book gives a voice to the victims. Keith Bolender brings to bear the enormous impact that terrorism has had on Cuba's civilian population, with over 6,000 documented incidents resulting in more than 3,000 deaths and 2,000 injuries. It is Bolender's aim to articulate the atrocities the Cuban people have suffered -- which largely originate from Cuban counter-revolutionaries based in the US, often with the active help of the CIA." Voices From The Other Side" includes first-person interviews with more than 75 Cuban citizens who have been victims of these terrorist acts, or have had family members or close friends die from the attacks. It is a unique resource for activists, journalists and students interested in Cuba's torrid relationship with the US.

The Oxford Handbook of Oral History brings together forty authors on five continents to address the evolution of oral history, the impact of digital technology, the most recent methodological and archival issues, and the application of oral history to both scholarly research and public presentations. The volume is addressed to seasoned practitioners as well as to newcomers, offering diverse perspectives on the current state of the field and its likely future developments. Practicing Oral History to Improve Public Policies and Programs (Paperback): Marella Hoffman Practicing Oral History to Improve Public Policies and Programs (Paperback)
Marella Hoffman
R1,256 Discovery Miles 12 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The use of contemporary oral history to improve public policies and programs is a growing, transdisciplinary practice. Indispensable for students and practitioners, Practicing Oral History to Improve Public Policies and Programs is the first book to define the practice, explain how policy-makers use it, show how it relates to other types of oral history, and provide guidance on the ethics and legalities involved. Packed with case studies from disciplines as diverse as medicine, agriculture, and race relations, as well as many examples from the author's own work, this book provides an essential overview of the current state of the field within oral history for public policy and a complete methodology for the process of designing and implementing an oral history project. The comprehensive How To section demonstrates how to use the practice to advance the reader's career, their chosen discipline and the public interest, whether their field is in oral history or in public policy. This book is an important resource for oral historians, fledgling or experienced, who are keen to find new applications and funding for their work, as well as for professionals in the public and not-for-profit sectors who want to learn to use oral history to improve their own policies and programs.

The Devil's Historians - How Modern Extremists Abuse the Medieval Past (Paperback): Amy Kaufman, Paul Sturtevant The Devil's Historians - How Modern Extremists Abuse the Medieval Past (Paperback)
Amy Kaufman, Paul Sturtevant
R669 R477 Discovery Miles 4 770 Save R192 (29%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Amy S. Kaufman and Paul B. Sturtevant examine the many ways in which the medieval past has been manipulated to promote discrimination, oppression, and murder. Tracing the fetish for "medieval times" behind toxic ideologies like nationalism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, misogyny, and white supremacy, Kaufman and Sturtevant show us how the Middle Ages have been twisted for political purposes in every century that followed. The Devil's Historians casts aside the myth of an oppressive, patriarchal medieval monoculture and reveals a medieval world not often shown in popular culture: one that is diverse, thriving, courageous, compelling, and complex.

Approaching an Auschwitz Survivor - Holocaust Testimony and its Transformations (Hardcover): J urgen Matth aus Approaching an Auschwitz Survivor - Holocaust Testimony and its Transformations (Hardcover)
J urgen Matth aus
R1,368 Discovery Miles 13 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Among sources on the Holocaust, survivor testimonies are the least replaceable and most complex, reflecting both the personality of the narrator and the conditions and perceptions prevailing at the time of narration. Scholarship aims to challenge memory and fill its gaps. At the same time, scholars often use testimonies uncritically or selectively-mining them to support generalizations. This book is a departure, bringing several scholars together to analyze the testimony of one Holocaust survivor. Helen "Zippi" Spitzer Tichauer was sent to Auschwitz in 1942. One of the few early arrivals to survive the camp and the death marches, she met her future husband in a DP camp. They moved to New York in the 1960s. Since the end of the war, Zippi devoted many hours to talking with a small group of scholars about her life. Zippi's testimony covers a wide range of human experiences in extremis and spans fifty-odd years. It is thus uniquely suited to raise questions on the meaning and use of survivor testimony. What do we know, sixty years after the Nazi era, about the workings of a death camp? How willing are we to learn from the experiences of a survivor, and how much is our perception preconditioned by standardized images? What are the mechanisms, aims and pitfalls of story-telling? Can survivor testimonies be understood properly without guidance from those who experienced the events? This book, written by established Holocaust scholars who have known Helen Tichauer for years, attempts to approximate survivor testimony and probe the limits of its representation and understanding. Contributors include Atina Grossmann (author, Jews, Germans, and Allies: Close Encounters in Occupied Germany, Princeton, 2007), Konrad Kwiet (co-ed., Contemporary Responses to the Holocaust, 2005), Wendy Lower (author, Shoah in Ukraine: History, Testimony, Memory, Indiana UP, 2007), Nehama Tec (author, Resilience and Courage: Women, Men, and the Holocaust, Yale, 2003, and Defiance: The Bielski Partisans, OUP, 1993). The book will be of interest to both Holocaust scholars and oral historians.

Focusing on the Savannah and Sahel region, Gomez traces how Islam's growth in West Africa, along with intensifying commerce that included slaves, resulted in a series of political experiments unique to the region, culminating in the rise of empire. A radically new account of the importance of early Africa in global history, African Dominion will be the standard work on the subject for years to come.

Contested Fields - A Global History of Modern Football (Paperback): Alan McDougall Contested Fields - A Global History of Modern Football (Paperback)
Alan McDougall
R553 Discovery Miles 5 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Few cultural activities speak more powerfully to international histories of the modern world than football. In the late nineteenth century, this cheap and simple sport emerged as a major legacy of Britain's formal and informal empires and spread quickly across Europe, South America, and Africa. Today, football (known to many as soccer) is arguably the world's most popular pastime, an activity played and watched by millions of people around the globe. Contested Fields introduces readers to key aspects of the global game, synthesizing research on football's transnational role in reflecting and shaping political, socio-economic, and cultural developments over the past 150 years. Each chapter uses case studies and cutting-edge scholarship to analyze an important element of football's international story: migration, money, competition, gender, race, space, spectatorship, and confrontation.

The Land Speaks - New Voices at the Intersection of Oral and Environmental History (Paperback): Debbie Lee, Kathryn Newfont The Land Speaks - New Voices at the Intersection of Oral and Environmental History (Paperback)
Debbie Lee, Kathryn Newfont
R1,305 Discovery Miles 13 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Land Speaks explores the intersection of two vibrant fields, oral history and environmental studies. Ranging across farm and forest, city and wilderness, river and desert, this collection of fourteen oral histories gives voice to nature and the stories it has to tell. These essays consider topics as diverse as environmental activism, wilderness management, public health, urban exploring, and smoke jumping. They raise questions about the roles of water, neglected urban spaces, land ownership concepts, protectionist activism, and climate change. Covering almost every region of the United States and part of the Caribbean, Lee and Newfont and their diverse collection of contributors address the particular contributions oral history can make toward understanding issues of public land and the environment. In the face of global warming and events like the Flint water crisis, environmental challenges are undoubtedly among the most pressing issues of our time. These essays suggest that oral history can serve both documentary and problem-solving functions as we grapple with these challenges.

Amid the turmoil of the dying days of the Second World War, a series of ships were sunk in the Baltic. Claes-Goeran Wetterholm brings the horror of these tragic events to life in this gripping study, first published in Swedish, as he collates the unknown stories of four major shipping disasters, the most terrible in history. Combining archive research with interviews with survivors and the relatives of those who died, Wetterholm vividly conveys his experiences of meeting many witnesses to a forgotten and horrifying piece of history.
