Using Rational-Emotive Therapy Effectively - A Practitioner's Guide (Hardcover, 1991 ed.): Michael E. Bernard Using Rational-Emotive Therapy Effectively - A Practitioner's Guide (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
Michael E. Bernard
R4,343 Discovery Miles 43 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The initial conceptualization of this book was much more narrow than the final product that has emerged. I started out believing that it would be enlightening to have a group of acknowledged rational-emotive therapy (RET) expert practitioners with well-established literary credentials write about how they approach the problem of modifying dient irrationality. Many RET practitioners of all levels of experience are, on the one hand, enamored of the economy, the precision, and the accuracy of psychological insight that RET theory offers, but they are, on the other hand, equally frustrated by their own inability to "persuade" or otherwise change some of the dients they work with more quickly or even at all. Indeed, dients themselves frequently express the view that RET is illuminating, yet they find themselves at the same time puzzled and perplexed by their inability to make the substantial changes that RET invites. It became dearer as I discussed the project with many of the contrib utors that to practice RET effectively requires more than just innovative and persistent assessment and intervention techniques. For example, Rus sell Grieger expressed the view that more prerequisite work needs to be done on the value and philosophical systems of dients-induding person al responsibility and the philosophy of happiness-before many dients can show significant shifts in their thinking. Susan Walen raised the gener al issues of how effective RET can be in the treatment of biologically driven affective disorders."

The Psychopolitics of Liberation - Political Consciousness From a Jungian Perspective (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): L Alschuler The Psychopolitics of Liberation - Political Consciousness From a Jungian Perspective (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
L Alschuler
R2,770 Discovery Miles 27 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lawrence R. Alschuler uses the ideas of Albert Memmi, Paulo Freire, and Jungian psychology to explain changes in the political consciousness of the oppressed. His analysis of the autobiographies of four Native people, from Guatemala and Canada, reveals how they attained "liberated consciousness" and healed their psychic wounds, inflicted by violence, exploitation, and discrimination. Their lessons and Alschuler's proposed public policies may be applicable to the oppressed in ethnically divided societies everywhere.

The Art of Public Prayer - Not for Clergy Only (Paperback, New Ed): Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman The Art of Public Prayer - Not for Clergy Only (Paperback, New Ed)
Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman
R372 Discovery Miles 3 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A resource for worshipers today looking to change hardened worship patternsthat stand in the way of everyday spirituality.

All too often, those who attend church or synagogue find themselves bored or baffled by the service. Their predominant thought is how slowly the time ticks by and that the service never seems to end.

Written for laypeople and clergy of any denomination, The Art of Public Prayer examines how and why religious ritual works and why it often doesn't work.

The Art of Public Prayer uses psychology, social science, theology and common sense to explain the key roles played by ritual, symbolism, liturgy and song in services. Each chapter features "conversation points" designed to get you and your faith community thinking and talking about your own worship patterns where they succeed, and where they need improvement.

The Art of Public Prayer can help you and your fellow congregants revitalize your worship service by allowing you to organize and direct your own worship, making it a meaningful and fulfilling part of your life."

Jung's Alchemical Philosophy - Psyche and the Mercurial Play of Image and Idea (Paperback): Stanton Marlan Jung's Alchemical Philosophy - Psyche and the Mercurial Play of Image and Idea (Paperback)
Stanton Marlan
R1,000 Discovery Miles 10 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Traditionally, alchemy has been understood as a precursor to the science of chemistry but from the vantage point of the human spirit, it is also a discipline that illuminates the human soul. This book explores the goal of alchemy from Jungian, psychological, and philosophical perspectives. Jung's Alchemical Philosophy: Psyche and the Mercurial Play of Image and Idea is a reflection on Jung's alchemical work and the importance of philosophy as a way of understanding alchemy and its contributions to Jung's psychology. By engaging these disciplines, Marlan opens new vistas on alchemy and the circular and ouroboric play of images and ideas, shedding light on the alchemical opus and the transformative processes of Jungian psychology. Divides in the history of alchemy and in the alchemical imagination are addressed as Marlan deepens the process by turning to a number of interpretations that illuminate both the enigma of the Philosophers' Stone and the ferment in the Jungian tradition. This book will be of interest to Jungian analysts and those who wish to explore the intersection of philosophy and psychology as it relates to alchemy.

Gothic Radicalism - Literature, Philosophy and Psychoanalysis in the Nineteenth Century (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): A. Smith Gothic Radicalism - Literature, Philosophy and Psychoanalysis in the Nineteenth Century (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
A. Smith
R2,779 Discovery Miles 27 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Applying ideas drawn from contemporary critical theory, this book historicizes psychoanalysis through a new and significant theorization of the Gothic. The central premise is that the nineteenth-century Gothic produced a radical critique of accounts of sublimity and Freudian psychoanalysis. This book makes a major contribution to an understanding of both the nineteenth century and the Gothic discourse which challenged the dominant ideas of that period. Writers explored include Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Bram Stoker.

The Graph of Desire - Using the Work of Jacques Lacan (Paperback): Alfredo Eidelsztein The Graph of Desire - Using the Work of Jacques Lacan (Paperback)
Alfredo Eidelsztein
R1,216 Discovery Miles 12 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book gathers the lectures of the post-graduate course entitled "The Graph of Desire and the Psychoanalytic Clinic," held in 1993 within the framework of the Updating Program on Lacanian Psychoanalysis (Post-Graduate Secretary, Faculty of Psychology, University of Buenos Aires).Although the subject of the course was the graph of desire and its articulation with the psychoanalytical practice, the reader will find here that Lacan s article "The subversion of the subject and the dialectic of desire in the Freudian unconscious" has been intensively looked over, being paraphrased and quoted in almost every class of the course. Considering that the Spanish translation has some problems, certain terms and paragraphs from the original French version have been translated by the author, in order to try to understand what Lacan affirms. The recordings of the course lectures constitute the basis for this book; they have been barely modified, for their colloquial style will not interfere with the reading."

Femininities, Masculinities, Sexualities - Freud and Beyond (Paperback): Nancy J. Chodorow Femininities, Masculinities, Sexualities - Freud and Beyond (Paperback)
Nancy J. Chodorow
R855 Discovery Miles 8 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nancy J. Chodorow takes her fellow psychoanalysts to task for their monolithic and pathologizing accounts of deviant gender and sexuality. Drawing from her own clinical experience, the work of Freud, and a close reading of psychoanalytic texts, Chodorow argues that psychoanalysis has yet to disentangle male dominance from heterosexuality. Further, she demonstrates the paucity of psychoanalytics understanding of heterosexuality and the problematic polarizing of normal and abnormal sexualities. By returning to Freud and interpreting psychoanalysis through clinical eyes, Chodorow contends that psychoanalysis must consider individual specificity and personal, cultural, and social factors. Such a methodology entails a plurality of femininities and masculinities and enables us to understand a variety of sexualities.

Joe Doherty, Elspeth Graham, Mo Malek
R2,795 Discovery Miles 27 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The social sciences are still predominantly modernist disciplines and, as such, products of the Enlightenment. Recent challenges to Enlightenment thinking thus carry with them the potential or threat to transform the social sciences radically. Postmodernism and the Social Sciences examines the nature and potential of this postmodernist challenge in each of the major social sciences. Starting with the practices of particular disciplines and proceeding to matters of shared concern, the essays provide an accessible discussion of the contemporary impact of postmodernism on social scientific thought.

Franco De Masi
R1,214 Discovery Miles 12 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Vulnerablity to Psychosis" provides the clinician with important perspectives on the origins and development of delusions in psychosis and offers a new perspective regarding the radical differences between delusional and normal or neurotic thought, and how these differences come about.Franco De Masi addresses the human vulnerability to psychosis. An Existential Approach to Interpersonal Trauma - Modes of Existing and Confrontations with Reality (Paperback): Marc Boaz An Existential Approach to Interpersonal Trauma - Modes of Existing and Confrontations with Reality (Paperback)
Marc Boaz
R991 Discovery Miles 9 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An Existential Approach to Interpersonal Trauma provides a new existential framework for understanding the experiences of interpersonal trauma building on reflections from Marc Boaz's own personal history, clinical insight and research. The book suggests that psychology, psychotherapy and existentialism do not recognise the significance of the existential movements that occur in traumatic confrontations with reality. By considering what people find at the limits and boundaries of human experiencing, Boaz describes the ways in which they can disillusion and re-illusion themselves, and how this becomes incorporated into their modes of existing in the world and in relation to others. In incorporating the experience of trauma into the way people live - all the existential horror, terror and liberation contained within it - Boaz invites them to embrace an expansive ethic of (re)(dis)covery. This ethic recognises the ambiguity and spectrality of interpersonal trauma, and expands the horizons of our human relationships. The book provides an important basis for professionals wanting to work existentially with interpersonal trauma and for people wanting to deepen their understanding of the trauma they have experienced.

Reconstructing Identity After Brain Injury tells the remarkable story of Stijn Geerinck and his journey from road traffic accident to recovery. After he was hit by a drunk driver whilst cycling, Stijn suffered a traumatic brain injury and had to undergo drastic maxillofacial and neurosurgery. In his own words, this book narrates Stijn's difficult recovery, focusing on the physical, medical, mental, social and financial changes he had to endure. It lays the groundwork for coping with permanent impairment resulting from TBI, including lifelong lesions and the irreversible physical changes. The testimonial narrative is complemented with philosophical insights, providing key philosopher's reflections on the experience of brain injury. Stijn also explores the essential human characteristics of resilience, fighting spirit, emotionality, despair, vulnerability, hope, depression, optimism, anxiety, rationality, focus, anger and love, as he looks at the impact of his brain injury and resulting disfigurement on his masculine identity. It is essential reading for any professional involved in neuropsychological rehabilitation, and all those touched by this condition.

The Use of Tools by Human and Non-human Primates (Hardcover): A. Berthelet, J. Chavaillon The Use of Tools by Human and Non-human Primates (Hardcover)
A. Berthelet, J. Chavaillon
R4,445 Discovery Miles 44 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Because of their vital role in the emergence of humanity, tools and their uses have been the focus of considerable worldwide study. This volume brings together international research on the use of tools among primates and both prehistoric and modern humans. The book represents leading work being done by specialists in anatomy, neurobiology, prehistory, ethnology, and primatology. Whether composed of stone, wood, or metal, tools are a prolongation of the arm that acquire precision through direction by the brain. The same movement, for example, may have been practiced by apes and humans, but the resulting action varies according to the extended use of the tool. It is therefore necessary, as the contributors here make clear, to understand the origin of tools, and also to describe the techniques involved in their manipulation, and the possible uses of unknown implements. Comparison of the techniques of chimpanzees with those of prehistoric and modern peoples has made it possible to appreciate the common aspects and to identify the differences. The transmission of ability has also been studied in the various relevant societies: chimpanzees in their natural habitat and in captivity, hunter-gatherers, and workmen in prehistoric and in modern times. In drawing together much valuable research, this work will be an important and timely resource for social and behavioral psychologists, anthropologists, paleontologists, and animal behaviorists.
