Social Cohesion in European Societies - Conceptualizing and Assessing Togetherness (Hardcover): Bujar Aruqaj Social Cohesion in European Societies - Conceptualizing and Assessing Togetherness (Hardcover)
Bujar Aruqaj
R3,835 Discovery Miles 38 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explains the concept of social cohesion in the context of a comparative sociological study. It proposes an innovative approach to the measurement of social cohesion, considering as constitutive elements social trust, institutional trust, and societies' degree of openness. Aruqaj observes these elements across time and on multiple social levels: individual (socio-economic inequalities and ethno-linguistic diversification); group (social categorisations and regional statistics of religious, gender, social status and migration differences); and societal (reflecting the quality of life and human capabilities). This book provides an analysis of social cohesion not only between, but also within European societies. It will appeal to students and scholars interested in solidarity and social integration working in sociology, social psychology and development studies.

Introducing Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement - Cultural Adaptation and an 8-week Path to Wellbeing and Happiness... Introducing Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement - Cultural Adaptation and an 8-week Path to Wellbeing and Happiness (Hardcover)
Kathirasan K, Sunita Rai
R3,692 Discovery Miles 36 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement (MBWE) integrates Mindfulness and Wellbeing to realize human flourishing and the attainment of happiness. This 9-session program, conducted over 8 weeks, enhances wellbeing, happiness and quality of life through self-understanding and self-awareness. The first part of the book is devoted to presenting mindfulness, wellbeing, the happiness paradigm and the curriculum of the Mindfulness-Based Wellbeing Enhancement (MBWE) program. It presents the foundations of mindfulness-based programs, and how mindfulness intersects with wellbeing. The authors argue, with the support of evidence, that mindfulness is well placed to promote human flourishing rather than limiting its relevance to stress reduction and preventing depression relapse. Several chapters are devoted to presenting the MBWE program comprehensively with weekly agendas, homework, handouts, facilitation guides and practice scripts. The second part of the book presents the evidence base of mindfulness, cultural adaptations for different populations, the therapeutic effectiveness of group learning inherent in Mindfulness-Based Programs and the often-untold history of mindfulness. The authors present the often-neglected Asian roots of Mindfulness and justify how secular Mindfulness, as taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is influenced by multiple wisdom traditions as opposed to it being a solely Buddhist practice. This book serves as a hands-on resource for trained mindfulness teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, counsellors, social workers, practitioners, educators, coaches, and consultants. It is also suitable for anyone who is interested in the appreciation of mindfulness and human flourishing.

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An... Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An Autoethnographic Inquiry (Hardcover)
Dee Phyllis Genetti
R3,834 Discovery Miles 38 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder provides an autoethnographic qualitative study that portrays the author's recovery from a devastating life changing event - a car crash resulting in the hybrid diagnosis of TBI and PTSD, leading to PTG and identity transformation over a ten-year recovery period. In so doing, the text offers a comprehensive literature review on TBI, PTSD, PTG, and disability culture. Throughout, the author explores whether growth (PTG) and distress (PTSD), and whether TBI and PTSD can co-exist. Having lost her ability to read and write, the author had to learn how to learn, to heal and to have faith again. As a licensed trauma therapist and researcher, she collected self-observational data by writing her actual behaviors, thoughts and emotions in real time, both in a field and a process journal, even before she could write in full sentences. The many symptoms and co-morbidities of TBI, PTSD and the tenets of PTG are portrayed as they evolved in recovery showing the behavior and characteristics of each. The text refers to actual journal entries, medical records, and clinical notes from rehabilitation specialists, alternating between her clinical analysis and interpretation. The findings show that tragedy and suffering can lead to growth and positive change (PTG) after TBI, even though the precipitating trauma and psychological distress (PTSD) may persist for years. Changes are seen in self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and philosophies of life. This chronicled account of the author's emergent recovery from patient to doctor is intended to benefit neuro-rehabilitation service providers (neuropsychologists, primary care physicians, speech-language pathologists) and also mental health clinicians who can see the evolution of Posttraumatic Growth for what is now the new next step for many in PTSD recovery.

Giuseppe Craparo, Francesca Ortu, Onno Van Der Hart
R1,178 Discovery Miles 11 780 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Rediscovering Pierre Janet explores the legacy left by the pioneering French psychologist, philosopher and psychotherapist (1859-1947), from the relationship of between Janet and Freud, to the influence of his dissociation theory on contemporary psychotraumatology. Divided into three parts, the first section places Janetian psychological analysis and psychoanalysis in context with the foundational tenets of psychoanalysis, from Freud to relational theory, before the book explores Janet's work on trauma and dissociation and its influence on contemporary thinking. Part three presents several contemporary psychotherapy approaches directly influenced by Janetian theory, including the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder and dissociative identity disorder. Rediscovering Pierre Janet draws together eminent scholars from a variety of backgrounds, each of whom has developed Janetian constructs according to his or her own theoretical and clinical models. It provides an integrative approach that offers contemporary perspectives on Janet's work, and will be of significant interest to practicing psychoanalysts, psychiatrists and psychotherapists, especially those treating trauma-related dissociative disorders, as well as researchers with an interest in psychological trauma.

Examining the Psychological Foundations of Science and Morality - Explaining the Inexplicable (Hardcover): Eugene Subbotsky Examining the Psychological Foundations of Science and Morality - Explaining the Inexplicable (Hardcover)
Eugene Subbotsky
R3,829 Discovery Miles 38 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Examining the Psychological Foundations of Science and Morality is a progressive text that explores the relationship between psychology, science and morality, to address fundamental questions about the foundations of psychological research and its relevance for the development of these disciplines. Supported by original empirical evidence, the book analyses the relationship of folk psychology to rational knowledge, outlining an original theory that connects psychology and natural sciences through the mind which creates a psychological foundation for scientific knowledge and morality. It argues that science and religion have a common psychological core of subjective experience, which diversifies into knowledge, beliefs and morality. The book considers how subjective space and time are converted into physical space and time, and how subjective 'sense of causation' is shaped into physical causality and human communication. Further, it explores the mind as a complex system of contrasting realities, with the main function being existence attribution (EXON). The chapters delve into a range of topics including theoretical analysis of consciousness, the internal self, unexplainable phenomena, analysis of empirical research into causality, morality and the mind. The book will be of great interest to postgraduate and upper-level undergraduate students studying foundations of psychology, consciousness, philosophy of science, morality, as well as professionals who deal with influence on mass consciousness or are interested in the link between human psychology, scientific knowledge and morality.

Life Studies in Psychoanalysis - Faces of Love (Hardcover): Sandra Sherman, Ahron Friedberg, M.D. Life Studies in Psychoanalysis - Faces of Love (Hardcover)
Sandra Sherman, Ahron Friedberg, M.D.
R3,673 Discovery Miles 36 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Life Studies in Psychoanalysis consists of four psychoanalytic studies each representing a patient's course of treatment over several years. These studies demonstrate how love, in an array of forms, is refracted through the process of psychoanalysis, which unfolds over time and reveals the complexities of human desire. The cases presented here cover topics including repressed homosexuality, a taboo desire for a sibling, obsession with a fantasy, an Oedipus complex, and transferences that become an initial obstacle to treatment. Dr. Ahron Friedberg offers professionals techniques for encouraging patients to remain in treatment when they become resistant, demoralized, or feel like they have hit a wall. As the studies proceed, each renders the non-linear progress of treatment, as layer upon layer of a patient's issues are brought to light and the patient slowly, often reluctantly, comes to terms with these issues. Life Studies in Psychoanalysis will be of great interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and readers looking for insight into the analytic process.

Political Pathologies from The Sopranos to Succession - Prestige TV and the Contradictions of the "Liberal" Class (Hardcover):... Political Pathologies from The Sopranos to Succession - Prestige TV and the Contradictions of the "Liberal" Class (Hardcover)
Robert Samuels
R3,675 Discovery Miles 36 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Political Pathologies from The Sopranos to Succession argues that highly praised prestige TV shows reveal the underlying fantasies and contradictions of upper-middle class political centrists. Through a psychoanalytic interpretation of The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, House of Cards, Dexter, Game of Thrones, and Succession, Robert Samuels reveals how moderate "liberals" have helped to produce and maintain the libertarian Right. Samuels' analysis explores the difference between contemporary centrists and the foundations of liberal democracy, exposing the myth of the "liberal media" and considers the consequences of these celebrated series, including the undermining of trust in modern liberal democratic institutions. Political Pathologies from The Sopranos to Succession contributes to a greater understanding of the ways media and political ideology can circulate on a global level through the psychopathology of class consciousness. This book will be of great interest to academics and scholars considering intersections of psychoanalytic studies, television studies and politics.

Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color, Volume 1 (Hardcover): Jon Grahe, Michelle Ceynar, Rihana S Mason Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color, Volume 1 (Hardcover)
Jon Grahe, Michelle Ceynar, Rihana S Mason
R3,832 Discovery Miles 38 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color, Volume I, collects the dissertations of 20 cultural pioneers: women of color who were among the first to earn their doctorate degrees in psychology. Collectively, these chapters offer an important resource to diversify the history of psychology. This book is structured so that each chapter provides a biographical sketch of the woman, a summary of the dissertation, a reproducibility critique, a discussion about a modern alternative theory or methodological approach associated with the work (feminist theory, ethnopsychology, liberation psychology, etc.), and examples of how the dissertation can be used as instructional content in psychology and related disciplines offers suggestions for classroom use. The dissertations were completed as early as 1912 and as late as 1979 with the range reflecting differences in when women of certain groups could access education. The topics also range broadly across the breadth of the field of psychology, including physiological, cognitive, developmental, social, clinical, and more topics. The diversity of the work collected here will allow this book to be used to augment coursework either as a complete collection or as individual chapters. Instructors and students in undergraduate and graduate Research Methods courses will find this a crucial text in maintaining a true and inclusive historical perspective of psychological research. Additionally, due to the inclusion of research spanning the breadth of Psychology, this edited volume will appeal to scholars both across the discipline and in related fields, such as Women's Studies, Cognitive Science, Education, and Cultural Studies.
