Transference and Countertransference - A Unifying Focus of Psychoanalysis (Paperback): Jean Arundale, Debbie Bandler Bellman Transference and Countertransference - A Unifying Focus of Psychoanalysis (Paperback)
Jean Arundale, Debbie Bandler Bellman
R1,154 Discovery Miles 11 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since Freud's initial papers on transference and countertransference, these vast and inexhaustible subjects have occupied psychoanalysts. Transference and countertransference, the essence of the patient/analyst relationship, are concepts so central to psychoanalysis that, to our minds, they transcend theoretical orientation and, thus, can be seen as the unifying focus of psychoanalysis. However differently theoretical traditions conceptualize the transference, or disagree as to when and how to interpret it in our everyday analytic work, we all embrace the phenomena as vital to psychic change. The ten contributors to this book describe work involving the transference and countertransference, with links frequently made between such work and psychic change. These are accounts of the analyst at work, detailed clinical accounts of what can be considered to be the bread and salt of psychoanalysis, set within a theoretical framework. The theoretical viewpoints put forth are varied, encompassing Kleinian, Independent, and Contemporary Freudian theoretical orientations, and, as such, represent the varied orientations of the members of the British Psychoanalytic Association. The psychoanalytic relationship is examined, in its positive and negative aspects. This includes fine-grained observations and interpretations as well as broader views of the emotional relationship with the analyst, with many clinical illustrations. The psychoanalytic practitioner, as well as the specialist reader, will find the studies of transference work in this book helpful in understanding the factors leading toward psychic change and the working-through of unconscious emotional dilemmas.Contributors: Jean Arundale, Debbie Bandler Bellman, Ruth Berkowitz, Sara Collins, Irene Freeden, Michael Halton, Jan Harvie-Clark, Viqui Rosenberg, Philip Roys and Jessica Sacret Hering.

Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams (Paperback): Elizabeth Caspari Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams (Paperback)
Elizabeth Caspari
R1,557 Discovery Miles 15 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams, Elizabeth Caspari connects the world of real, living animals with the symbolic world of animal images in human thought, both conscious and unconscious. She gives the reader an opportunity to make this connection on his or her own personal journey of discovery. This book is a study of animals-their natural history, mythology, folklore, and religious significance around the world as well as their role in our lives, dreams, and everyday language. It examines the symbolic impact animals have on our collective culture, particularly on our own personal and interior lives. From Albatross to Zebra, each animal is pictured in color and factual context is given about its behavior in the natural world. Information is included about habitat, distribution, weight, size, longevity, and classification. By drawing on a process of amplification developed by C.G. Jung, in which an image is related to a previous historical, mythological, religious, or ethnological context, Animal Life in Nature, Myth and Dreams discusses the meaning of the animal in a dream, amplifying the reader's understanding of that animal. Intended for anyone interested in the actual behavior and nature of animals and the world we live in, Animal Life presents a good deal of ethological and mythological material. By contemplating the significance of our fellow creatures, and how everything in our universe is connected, Animal Life offers a more whole, and more healing, view of the world. Fully illustrated in color.

Neuropsychology and Philosophy of Mind in Process - Essays in Honor of Jason W. Brown (Hardcover): Maria Pachalska, Michel Weber Neuropsychology and Philosophy of Mind in Process - Essays in Honor of Jason W. Brown (Hardcover)
Maria Pachalska, Michel Weber
R6,318 Discovery Miles 63 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume celebrates the life achievements of Jason W. Brown, who, along with Jean Piaget, Heinz Werner, Alexander Luria and the Wurzburg school, has significantly contributed to the development of a process-based theory of brain/mind capable of challenging the currently fashionable modularist or cybernetic approaches to understanding human thought and feeling. As a paradigm, Brown's microgenetic theory is thus applicable in both brain science (where Brown was inspired by the pioneering work of Schilder and Pick) and the philosophy of mind (where the influence of Bergson, Whitehead, Cassirer, and Merleau-Ponty can be seen). Essays with a range of focus as wide as Brown's expertise have been collected in such diverse areas as neuropsychology (microstructure of action, symptomatology, neuro-rehabilitation, neurolinguistics, locationism), theoretical psychology (consciousness, hypnosis, morphogenesis, personality development, psychoanalysis, Buddhist psychology, mysticism), and philosophy of mind (evolutionary epistemology, emergence/novelty/creativity, subjectivity, will and action, Whiteheadian process philosophy)."

R3,073 Discovery Miles 30 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is for caregivers: those who care for and about children and adults who reside on the very edge of family and community life. It is for those who not only want to help these distanced individuals but for those who also want to change themselves in the process. It is for parents, teachers, direct care workers, coun selors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, advocates, and all who strive to bring about just treatment for the marginalized. It is for those who want to consider a psychology based on inter dependence and to uncover ways to express and practice compan ionship instead of control. It is about children and adults who live in marginalized conditions, who are pushed and pulled away from feelings of union and hurt themselves, hurt others, or simply give up. It is for those who live and work among the mentally retarded, the mentally ill, the aged, the homeless, and the poor. To be marginalized is to be easily controlled, isolated, and segregated."

The Creative Writer's Mind (Paperback): Nigel Krauth The Creative Writer's Mind (Paperback)
Nigel Krauth
R834 Discovery Miles 8 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What goes on in creative writers' heads when they write? What can cognitive psychology, neuroscience, literary studies and previous research in creative writing studies tell creative writers about the processes of their writing mind? Creative writers have for centuries undertaken cognitive research. Some described cognition in vivid exegetical essays, but most investigated the mind in creative writing itself, in descriptions of the thinking of characters in fiction, poetry and plays. The inner voicings and inner visualising revealed in Greek choruses, in soliloquies, in stream-of-consciousness narratives are creative writers' 'research results' from studying their own cognition, and the thinking of others. The Creative Writer's Mind is a book for creative writers: it sets out to cross the gap between creative writing and science, between the creative arts and cognitive research.

Foundations of Islamic Psychology - From Classical Scholars to Contemporary Thinkers (Paperback): G.Hussein Rassool, Mugheera... Foundations of Islamic Psychology - From Classical Scholars to Contemporary Thinkers (Paperback)
G.Hussein Rassool, Mugheera M. Luqman
R1,257 Discovery Miles 12 570 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Foundations of Islamic Psychology: From Classical Scholars to Contemporary Thinkers examines the history of Islamic psychology from the Islamic Golden age through the early 21st century, giving a thorough look into Islamic psychology's origins, Islamic philosophy and theology, and key developments in Islamic psychology. In tracing psychology from its origins in early civilisations, ancient philosophy, and religions to the modern discipline of psychology, this book integrates overarching psychological principles and ideas that have shaped the global history of Islamic psychology. It examines the legacy of psychology from an Islamic perspective, looking at the contributions of early Islamic classical scholars and contemporary psychologists, and to introduce how the history of Islamic philosophy and sciences has contributed to the development of classical and modern Islamic psychology from its founding to the present. With each chapter covering a key thinker or moment, and also covering the globalisation of psychology, the Islamisation of knowledge, and the decolonisation of psychology, the work critically evaluates the effects of the globalisation of psychology and its lasting impact on indigenous culture. This book aims to engage and inspire students taking undergraduate and graduate courses on Islamic psychology, to recognise the power of history in the academic studies of Islamic psychology, to connect history to the present and the future, and to think critically. It is also ideal reading for researchers and those undertaking continuing professional development in Islamic psychology, psychotherapy, and counselling.

The Palgrave Handbook of Critical Social Psychology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Brendan Gough The Palgrave Handbook of Critical Social Psychology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Brendan Gough
R4,723 Discovery Miles 47 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This handbook is the first to bring together the latest theory and research on critical approaches to social psychological challenges. Edited by a leading authority in the field, this volume further establishes critical social psychology as a discipline of study, distinct from mainstream social psychology. The handbook explains how critical approaches to social processes and phenomena are essential to fully understanding them, and covers the main research topics in basic and applied social psychology, including social cognition, identity and social relations, alongside overviews of the main theories and methodologies that underpin critical approaches. This volume features a range of leading authors working on key social psychological issues, and highlights a commitment to a social psychology which shuns psychologisation, reductionism and neutrality. It provides invaluable insight into many of the most pressing and distressing issues we face in modern society, including the migrant and refugee crises affecting Europe; the devaluing of black lives in the USA; and the poverty, ill-health, and poor mental well-being that has resulted from ever-increasing austerity efforts in the UK. Including sections on critical perspectives, critical methodologies, and critical applications, this volume also focuses on issues within social cognition, self and identity. This one-stop handbook is an indispensable resource for a range of academics, students and researchers in the fields of psychology and sociology, and particularly those with an interest in social identity, power relations, and critical interventions.

Stress Reduction and Prevention (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): M. Jaremko, Donald Meichenbaum Stress Reduction and Prevention (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
M. Jaremko, Donald Meichenbaum
R4,582 Discovery Miles 45 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since 1950, when Hans Selye first devoted an entire book to the study of stress, professional and public concern with stress has grown tremendous ly. These concerns have contributed to an understanding that has impli cations for both prevention and treatment. The present book is designed to combine these data with the clinical concerns of dealing with stressed populations. In order to bridge the gap between research and practice, contributions are included by major researchers who have been con cerned with the nature of stress and coping and by clinical researchers who have developed stress management and stress prevention programs. The book is divided into three sections. The goal of the first section is to survey the literature on stress and coping and to consider the implica tions for setting up stress prevention and management programs. Follow ing some introductory observations by the editors are the observations of three prominent investigators in the field of stress and coping. Irving JaniS, Seymour Epstein, and Howard Leventhal have conducted seminal studies on the topic of coping with stress. For this book they have each gone beyond their previous writings in proposing models and guidelines for stress prevention and management programs. While each author has tackled his task somewhat differently, a set of common suggestions has emerged."

Enduring Time (Hardcover, HPOD): Lisa Baraitser Enduring Time (Hardcover, HPOD)
Lisa Baraitser
R3,125 Discovery Miles 31 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The ways in which we imagine and experience time are changing dramatically. Climate change, unending violent conflict, fraying material infrastructures, permanent debt and widening social inequalities mean that we no longer live with an expectation of a progressive future, a generative past, or a flourishing now that characterized the temporal imaginaries of the post-war period. Time, it appears, is not flowing, but has become stuck, intensely felt, yet radically suspended. How do we now 'take care' of time? How can we understand change as requiring time not passing? And what can quotidian experiences of suspended time - waiting, delaying, staying, remaining, enduring, returning and repeating - tell us about the survival of social bonds? Enduring Time responds to the question of the relationship between time and care through a paradoxical engagement with time's suspension. Working with an eclectic archive of cultural, political and artistic objects, it aims to reestablish the idea that time might be something we both have and share, as opposed to something we are always running out of. A strikingly original philosophy of time, this book also provides a detailed survey of contemporary theories of the topic; it is an indispensable read for those attempting to live meaningfully in the current age.

Zizek and the Rhetorical Unconscious - Global Politics, Philosophy, and Subjectivity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Robert Samuels Zizek and the Rhetorical Unconscious - Global Politics, Philosophy, and Subjectivity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Robert Samuels
R1,776 Discovery Miles 17 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book builds on a critique of Slavoj Zizek's work to outline a new theory of psychoanalytic rhetoric. It turns to Zizek because not only is he one of the most popular intellectuals in the world, but, this book argues, his discourse is shaped by a set of unconscious rhetorical processes that also determine much of contemporary politics, culture, and subjectivity. Just as Aristotle argued that the three main forms of persuasion are logos (reason), pathos (emotion), and ethos (authority), Samuels describes each one of these aspects of communication as related to a fundamental psychoanalytic concept. He also turns to Aristotle's work on theater to introduce a fourth form of rhetoric, catharsis, which is the purging of feelings of fear and pity. Adding a strong voice to current psychoanalytic debate, this book will be of value to all scholars and students interested in both the history and modern developments of psychoanalytic theory.

On Latency - Individual Development, Narcissistic Impulse Reminiscence and Cultural Ideal (Paperback): M. Leticia Franieck On Latency - Individual Development, Narcissistic Impulse Reminiscence and Cultural Ideal (Paperback)
M. Leticia Franieck
R900 Discovery Miles 9 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Latency is a developmental period that plays a transitional role, like 'a bridge', between early childhood and adolescence (the beginning of early adulthood) and although it is of interest in being a point in child development that has a previous reference to early childhood, and a later reference--to adolescence, the latency period is a subject that has not been studied enough in psychoanalysis in recent years. Most of the psychoanalytic frameworks that have built on and extended Freud's work, have focussed their attention either on the understanding of the child's early development, the early dyadic and triadic relationship of the infant, the early organization of the mind, or on the understanding of adolescent development when sexuality explodes accompanied by all unconscious libidinal elements from the early organization (Etchegoyen, 1993) which were repressed in latency--thus the interest in the latency period has been put in the shade: left dormant as its definition would imply. The aim of this book is to raise a number of relevant questions, which have not been covered] much in psychoanalysis up to now. To this end we related empirical findings to conceptual elaboration for advances in knowledge. We are convinced that this kind of work can contribute to a better understanding of cultural pattern influences on the child's emotional development process in latency, in particular contributing to an elaboration of psychoanalytic concepts for this period."- From the Authors' Introduction"

Handbook of Dissociation - Theoretical, Empirical, and Clinical Perspectives (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Larry K. Michelson, William... Handbook of Dissociation - Theoretical, Empirical, and Clinical Perspectives (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Larry K. Michelson, William J. Ray
R6,103 Discovery Miles 61 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Within the last decade there has been a tremendous explosion in the clinical, theoretical, and empirical literature related to the study of dissociation. Not since the work done at the tum of the century by Pierre Janet, Morton Prince, William James, and others have the psychological and medical communities shown this great an interest in describing and understanding dissociative phenomena. This volume is the result of this significant expansion. Presently, interest in the scientific and clinical progress in the field of dissociation is indicated by the following: 1. The explosion of conferences, workshops, and seminars devoted to disso ciative disorders treatment and research. 2. The emergence of NIMH-supported investigations that focus on dissociation. 3. The burgeoning literature on dissociation. According to a 1992 biblio graphic analysis of the field by Goettman et al. (1992), 72% of all writings on the topic have appeared in the past decade, with about 1000 published papers scattered across diverse disciplines and journals. 4. Current interest in dissociation as reflected in the appearance of major articles and special issues in respected psychology and psychiatry journals. 5. The initiation of a journal entitled Dissociation (Richard Kluft, MD, Editor) devoted to the area."

Reimagining Therapy through Social Contextual Analyses - Finding New Ways to Support People in Distress (Paperback): Bernard... Reimagining Therapy through Social Contextual Analyses - Finding New Ways to Support People in Distress (Paperback)
Bernard Guerin
R955 Discovery Miles 9 550 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book attempts to 'shake up' the current complacency around therapy and 'mental health' behaviours by putting therapy fully into context using Social Contextual Analysis; showing how changes to our social, discursive, and societal environments, rather than changes to an individual's 'mind', will reduce suffering from the 'mental health' behaviours. Guerin challenges many assumptions about both current therapy and psychology, and offers alternative approaches, synthesized from sociology, social anthropology, sociolinguistics, and elsewhere. The book provides a way of addressing the 'mental health' behaviours including actions, talking, thinking, and emotions, by taking people's external life situations into account, and not relying on an imagined 'internal source'. Guerin describes the broad contexts for current Western therapies, referring to social, discursive, cultural, societal, and economic contexts, and suggests that we need to research the components of therapies and stop treating therapies as units. He reframes different types of therapy away from their abstract jargons, offering an alternative approach grounded in our real social worlds, aligning with new thinking that challenges the traditional methods of therapy, and also providing a better framework for rethinking psychology itself. The book ultimately suggests more emphasis should be put on 'mental health' behaviours as arising from social issues including the modern contexts of extreme capitalism, excessive bureaucracy, weakened discursive communities, and changing forms of social relationships. Practical guidelines are provided for building the reimagined therapies into clinics and institutions where labelling and pathologizing the 'mental health' behaviours will no longer be needed. By putting 'mental health' behaviours and therapy into a naturalistic or ecological social sciences framework, this book will be practical and fascinating reading for professional therapists, counsellors, social workers, and mental health nurses, as well as academics interested in psychology and the social sciences more generally.

Severe Behavior Disorders in the Mentally Retarded - Nondrug Approaches to Treatment (Hardcover, 1986 ed.): Rowland P. Barrett Severe Behavior Disorders in the Mentally Retarded - Nondrug Approaches to Treatment (Hardcover, 1986 ed.)
Rowland P. Barrett
R4,563 Discovery Miles 45 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It is well known that behavior problems are a salient characteristic of children and adults with mental retardation. That is not to say that all persons with mental retardation experience behavior disorders; how ever, most studies indicate that the incidence of emotional disturbance in this population is four to six times greater than that observed in similar intellectually nonhandicapped children and adults. It is equally well known that the principal form of treatment accorded clients with mental retardation and behavior disorders is pharmacotherapy or the prescrip tion of behavior modifying drugs. Recent studies show that 6 out of every 10 individuals with mental retardation have been prescribed drugs as treatment for disorders of emotion or behavior. Unfortunately, further studies indicate that only one or 2 out of every 10 clients receiving medication are determined to be "responders," such that some thera peutic benefit is derived from their drug treatment. As noted by the title, the single major thrust of this volume is to review approaches to the treatment of behavior disorders in persons with mental retardation from a nondrug perspective. This requires the presentation of a wide range of material on treatment: basic behavior modification programming, cognitive-behavioral strategies, habilitative approaches, counseling and psychotherapy, designing therapeutic living environments, managing medical factors bearing relevance to emotional illness, intervening with families, training special education teachers and direct care staff, and supplying information on the client's rights to obtain treatment in the least restrictive and least intrusive manner."

Decision Theory and Decision Behaviour (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998): A Rapoport Decision Theory and Decision Behaviour (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 1998)
A Rapoport
R4,490 Discovery Miles 44 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book treats two approaches to decision theory: (1) the normative, purporting to determine how a 'perfectly rational' actor ought to choose among available alternatives; (2) the descriptive, based on observations of how people actually choose in real life and in laboratory experiments. The mathematical tools used in the normative approach range from elementary algebra to matrix and differential equations. Sections on different levels can be studied independently. Special emphasis is made on 'offshoots' of both theories to cognitive psychology, theoretical biology, and philosophy.

Biosociology - An Emerging Paradigm (Hardcover, New): Anthony Walsh Biosociology - An Emerging Paradigm (Hardcover, New)
Anthony Walsh
R2,841 Discovery Miles 28 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Biosociology is an emerging paradigm seeking to understand human behavior by integrating relevant insights from the natural sciences into traditional sociological thinking. Biosociology posits no ultimate causes of human behavior, rather it seeks to understand how biological factors interact with other factors to produce observed behavior. The book presents a brief introduction to biophysical systems that are important to the understanding of human behavior - genetics, neurophysiology, and the autonomic and endocrine systems. These systems are explored in the contexts of sociological importance, such as socialization, learning, gender roles, gender differences, sexuality, the family, deviance, and criminality.
