Freud on Interpretation - The Ancient Magical Egyptian and Jewish Traditions (Hardcover, 2012): Robert W. Rieber Freud on Interpretation - The Ancient Magical Egyptian and Jewish Traditions (Hardcover, 2012)
Robert W. Rieber
R2,785 Discovery Miles 27 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents new insights into Freud's famous "discovery" of the unconscious and the subsequent development of psychoanalytic theories. The authors explore the original context in which these ideas arose and the central debate about mind as matter or something that transcends matter. In the course of this examination, it is demonstrated that Freud was influenced not only by the 19th century scientific milieu, but also by ancient cultures. While it is known that Freud was an avid collector of ancient artifacts and generally interested in these older cultures, this book systematically investigates their profound effect on his thinking and theorizing. Two major influences, Egyptian mythology and Jewish mysticism are analyzed in terms of similarities to Freud's emerging ideas about the mind and its diseases. To further this line of investigation, Bakan supplies an illuminating discussion of what it means to interpret. Taken from the viewpoint that interpretation involves an u

R2,818 Discovery Miles 28 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the basic concept of agency and develops it further in psychology using it to better understand and explain psychological processes and behavior. More importantly, this book seeks to put an emphasis on the role of agency in four distinct settings: history of psychology, neuroscience, psychology of religion, and sociocultural theories of co-agency. In Volume 12 of the Annals of Theoretical Psychology the contributors explore a number of new ways to look at agency in psychology. This volume seeks to develop a systematic theory of axioms for agency. It describes implications for research and practice that are founded on an understanding of the person as an actor in the world. This book also has implications for research and practice across psychology's sub-fields uniting the discipline through an agentic view of the person

Hazel G. Whitters
R1,069 Discovery Miles 10 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a study of infant mental health which blends knowledge and understanding from three perspectives: international research, theory, and intervention. The volume increases awareness of the significance of infant mental health, adding to the growing body of literature on influences upon lifestyles, communities, society, and attainment. The significance of mental health to development has come to the fore in recent years and research in neuroscience is used to explore, and to understand the complexities of the human brain. Each infant is exposed to unique influences before and after birth. Neuroscience, genetics, adverse childhood experiences, and personalities feature in the chapters as mitigating factors to attainment. Exemplars create a bridge between research and implementation of recommendations, and illustrate the myriad of influences and permutations that can enhance or hinder development. This book discusses internal influences from an infant's biological make-up, alongside the circumstances and relationships within a family unit, as understanding these key aspects is integral to promotion of each infant's life chances. The volume concludes by considering future approaches to nurturing infant mental health. Carefully designed to stimulate discussion and professional inquiry, this volume is an invaluable resource for researchers, academics, and scholars with an interest in infant mental health.

Facts Against Fictions of Executive Behavior - A Critical Analysis of What Managers Do (Hardcover): Joe Kelly Facts Against Fictions of Executive Behavior - A Critical Analysis of What Managers Do (Hardcover)
Joe Kelly
R2,694 Discovery Miles 26 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Executive behavior is simply what managers do. But what do they do? To answer this question, Kelly reviews the observational studies of managerial behavior made in the 1950s and 1960s by H. Mintzberg and S. Carlson, among others, and updates the record by including research of the 1980s and 1990s. This hard data of scientific observation is compared to and contrasted with the soft data of top manager interviews and CEO biographies, which includes material on Lee Iacocca, John Akers, Steven Jobs, John Sculley, and Jack Welch. To get these facts and fictions of executive life together in a meaningful and understandable way, this book develops a new view of executive behavior, which focuses on two paradigms: the classical and existential models of the manager.

In the classical approach, the manager plans, organizes, leads, and evaluates (POLEs). Both observational studies and the soft data of interviews and biographies shows the executive to be a much more intuitive person who engages in fleeting, superficial, and often distracting interactions with his or her peers and subordinates. Inevitably, such a life-style makes the manager into a gamesman---an existential player in a life in which chance and choice are vital elements in forming the corporate vision. To make this vision a reality, the existential executive employs a transformational style of leadership. This book focuses on four levels of management: chief executives, general managers, middle managers, and supervisors. Among the issues explored in depth are transformational leadership, selection of CEOs, the drama of executive meetings, and the executive of the future. Ideal as a supplemental reading for courses in organizational behavior and management, this book is also an important resource for consultants and executives who are involved in management development and selection who seek an in-depth, balanced view of the modern manager.

Psychoanalysis, Identity, and Ideology - Critical Essays on the Israel/Palestine Case (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): John Bunzl,... Psychoanalysis, Identity, and Ideology - Critical Essays on the Israel/Palestine Case (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
John Bunzl, Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi
R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since its founding one hundred years ago psychoanalysis has been the focus of contention, controversy, and debate. What has been clear despite all controversies is that the psychoanalytic tradition has created and inspired special modes of critical thinking which have been used to examine both human behavior and corresponding social ideologies.
Psychoanalysis, Identity, and Ideology presents papers from a historic two day conference of leading Israeli, Palestinian, and European psychologists held in June of 1999. Sensitive professional and historical dilemmas are discussed with refreshing openness. This collection embodies the tradition of critical thinking applied to ideologies and identities, Zionism in particular, through a non-exclusive prism of psychoanalytic traditions.

Behavior Analysis and Treatment (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): Ron Van Houten, Saul Axelrod Behavior Analysis and Treatment (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
Ron Van Houten, Saul Axelrod
R4,349 Discovery Miles 43 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In May 1986, the Association for Behavior Analysis (ABA) established a task force on the right to effective behavioral treatment. The mandate of this task force was to identify and delineate specific rights as they apply to behavioral treatment. Impetus for this project came in part from the controversy over the use of aversive procedures, which some held had no place in treatment and, with evolution of the treatment process, were no longer necessary. In con trast, others cited evidence that programs based on positive reinforcement alone were sometimes not effective in treating severe problems. These re searchers and practitioners desired to ensure that clients and guardians be permitted to choose treatments that included punishment procedures when assessments warranted their use. The first editor approached Ogden Lindsley, president of ABA, about establishing a task force to examine this isuse. The ABA council decided to broaden the mandate to include an examination of clients' right to effective behavioral treatment in general. The first editor was asked to chair the task force and appointed Saul Axelrod, Jon S. Bailey, Judith E. Favell, Richard M. Foxx, and 0. Ivar Lovaas as members. Brian A. Iwata was appointed liaison by the ABA council."

Social Psychology in Forensic Practice (Paperback): Joel Harvey, Derval Ambrose Social Psychology in Forensic Practice (Paperback)
Joel Harvey, Derval Ambrose
R1,107 Discovery Miles 11 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores how different social psychology theories and concepts can be applied to practice. Considering theories from attribution theory to coercion theory, social identity theories to ostracism, the authors offer a greater understanding and appreciation of the ways in which social psychology can contribute to forensic practice. The book argues that social psychology is useful for carrying out assessments (including risk assessments), formulations, and interventions with clients in forensic settings, as well as for psychological consultation, training, and the development of services. These theories are also important when understanding multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working, staff-client relationships, and peer-to-peer relationships. Through illustrative composite case examples, taken from the authors' experiences in forensic settings, the chapters demonstrate effective ways to pursue a theoretically informed practice. Exploring a broad range of theories and a timely topic, Social Psychology in Forensic Practice will interest a wide readership including graduate and undergraduate students and researchers in criminology, sociology, and forensic, social and clinical psychology. It will also be of practical use to health professionals and non-health professionals working in forensic settings as well as policy makers and others commissioning forensic services.
