What do you do when the meals are over and the dressing has been accomplished? Those caring for a person with an illness or disability who ask themselves this question can find a wealth of answers in "Making the Moments Count." For professional, volunteer, and family caregivers, here is an invaluable guide for creating meaningful and enjoyable activities. Whatever the ages or circumstances of the people in a caregiving relationship, such shared moments can bring positive changes in the present and build memories to treasure in the future. In "Making the Moments Count," therapeutic recreation specialist Joanne Ardolf Decker provides practical, "doable" suggestions for spending leisure time with people of all ages who need care, whether they are recovering from an illness, facing a terminal disease, or growing older and more dependent on outside help. Caregivers are obviously important in providing help with feeding, hygiene, and health care. But they are also crucially important in caring for the mind and spirit. This book will help caregivers accomplish that part of their jobs when life is most difficult--when the need for joy and meaning is greatest. Through descriptions of individual situations, Decker shows how caregivers can focus on: - Keeping the mind active - General body movement - Influencing self-esteem and outlook - Making plans for each day - Keeping outings simple - Hobbies, interests, and feeling useful In addition to case examples of individual situations and lists of suggestions for appropriate leisure activities, Decker provides information about the benefits of the activities and how to adapt them to fit different abilities, interests, and age groups. Checklists are provided for recording information about the person receiving care--information about which activities were meaningful in the past, what is possible in the current situation, and how activities might be enjoyed in the future. "Making the Moments Count" is a valuable resource for professional caregivers and volunteers, and for family and friends who provide care for a loved one, whether in the home or in an institutional setting.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is becoming a recognized discipline among health care professionals and medical training institutions worldwide. Its significance is especially felt in Japan, where little has been written on the subject although the need is great. Recent initiatives among several institutions have helped to create the Japan Interprofessional Working and Education Network (JIPWEN), comprising ten universities. Through consultation and cooperation with the World Health Organization, other international networks, and local health policy planners, JIPWEN focuses on critical issues and applicable models to assist institutions interested in setting up IPE programs. With contributions from the ten JIPWEN member universities, this book explains in detail the diverse contents of existing IPE programs and provides viable models for the increasing number of institutions aiming to develop their own IPE programs. The chapters that make up the book depict the member institutions' backgrounds, goals, methods, modules, student compositions, facilitation systems, and curricula, providing an invaluable description of IPE initiatives currently under way in Japan.
This book highlights the impact that the Fascial Manipulation(R) - Stecco(R) method for fascial dysfunctions, developed by Italian physiotherapist Luigi Stecco, has had on the clinical practice of 16 well-established practitioners from a total of seven different countries and from different disciplines, including physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy and massage therapy. It gives voice to some of the experienced practitioners who have acknowledged Luigi Stecco's work and have played an important role in the diffusion of this method in their respective countries. The knowledgeable 'clinical eye' of these practitioners will have immense value for their peers. An introductory chapter outlines the theoretical models underlying the Fascial Manipulation - Stecco method and the clinical reasoning process applied in this method. Each subsequent chapter presents the application of the Fascial Manipulation - Stecco method in detailed case reports. Chapters are divided into three main sections (Musculoskeletal, Internal Dysfunctions and Other Perspectives) and they provide useful information either for other practitioners of this method or for colleagues who are interested in approaching this type of fascial work. Furthermore, the personal accounts presented here provide ulterior historical background to the development and spread of the Fascial Manipulation - Stecco method, which has generated and continues to generate numerous areas for research.
Integrate physical activity into feminist therapy! This book explores the healing use of exercise and sport as a helpful adjunct to therapy from several therapeutic orientations within the feminist context. It looks at the ways that feminist orientations challenge the mind-body dichotomy and explores the benefits of integrating physical activity, exercise, and sport into therapy. From the editors: The contributors to this book display a diversity of theory and research approaches, including the integration of the exercise/sport sciences and exercise physiology. This volume is unique in that there has been comparatively little written about the use of exercise in therapy even though exercise is a wonderful and useful intervention tool in the treatment of depression, stress, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain. This book illustrates how exercise can be applied to inpatient and outpatient populations, to the neurotic, and to the chronically mentally ill. Exercise can reduce the incidence of chronic diseases, including diabetes and hypertension, as well as address physical problems such as obesity. Exercise can give one a sense of mastery and self-confidence. As our authors suggest, exercise must be tailored to specific issues and client populations and diagnoses, level of functioning, age, overall health, and cultural context must all be taken into account. Exercise and Sport in Feminist Therapy: Constructing Modalities and Assessing Outcomes examines: the theory supporting the use of physicality to enhance various types of psychotherapypsychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, constructivist, narrative, and organismic/systems practical methods of integrating exercise into varied orientations an exercise program for women with fibromyalgia a way to use exercise to enhance rehabilitation from breast cancer the use of exercise in group therapy for women suffering with chronic mental illness the "tend and befriend" model, which can help clients to meet their exercise program responsibilities

Human Hand Function is a multidisciplinary book that reviews the
sensory and motor aspects of normal hand function from both
neurophysiological and behavioral perspectives. Lynette Jones and
Susan Lederman present hand function as a continuum ranging from
activities that are essentially sensory in nature to those that
have a strong motor component. They delineate four categories of
function along this sensorimotor continuum--tactile sensing, active
haptic sensing, prehension, and non-prehensile skilled
movements--that they use as a framework for analyzing and
synthesizing the results from a broad range of studies that have
contributed to our understanding of how the normal human hand
functions.
