Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy - Examination, Testing, and Exercise Prescription for Movement-Related... Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy - Examination, Testing, and Exercise Prescription for Movement-Related Disorders (Hardcover)
Debra Coglianese
R3,629 Discovery Miles 36 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In order to effectively examine, test, and treat patients with exercise, physical therapists need to understand how physiology from the cellular to the systems level provides the basis for normal responses to exercise. But that is not enough. Knowledge about pathophysiology, the changes that lead to abnormal responses to exercise in different patient populations, is also essential. Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy: Examination, Testing, and Exercise Prescription for Movement-Related Disorders is a comprehensive reference created to answer the "why" and the "how" to treat patients with exercise by offering both comprehensive information from the research literature, as well as original patient cases. Dr. Debra Coglianese, along with her contributors, have arranged Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy into three parts: foundations of physiological responses, pathophysiology of deconditioning and physiology of training, and pathophysiology considerations and clinical practice. The chapters present the physiology and pathophysiology for defined patient populations consistent with the American Physical Therapy Association's Guide to Physical Therapy Practice. Patient cases also supplement each chapter to illustrate how understanding the content of the chapter informs physical therapy examination, testing, and treatment. The patient/client management model from the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice defines the structure of the patient cases, and the International Classification of Function, Disability, and Health (ICF) model of disablement has been inserted into each patient case. Highlighted "Clinician Comments" appear throughout each patient case to point out the critical thinking considerations. Instructors in educational settings can visit www.efacultylounge.com for additional materials to be used for teaching in the classroom. Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy: Examination, Testing, and Exercise Prescription for Movement-Related Disorders is a ground-breaking reference for the physical therapy student or clinician looking to understand how physiology and pathophysiology relate to responses to exercise in different patient populations.

The Feldenkrais Method - Learning Through Movement (Paperback): Staffan Elgelid, Chrish Kresge The Feldenkrais Method - Learning Through Movement (Paperback)
Staffan Elgelid, Chrish Kresge
R1,041 Discovery Miles 10 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings the Feldenkrais Method(R) and the concept of Somatic Education to a wide audience. As well as providing an introduction to the Feldenkrais Method(R) and its applications, a team of highly qualified contributors, representing a variety of therapeutic professions, explore how the Feldenkrais Method(R) interacts with and supports other professions and modalities, including Pilates, yoga, dance, physical therapy, sports coaching, rehabilitation medicine, and more. (See the table of contents for full details.) Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), the founder of the Feldenkrais Method(R), built his Method around the concept of improving human functioning by increasing self-awareness through movement. The concept of neuroplasticity - the brain's amazing capacity to change and adapt - was one of Feldenkrais' basic tenets of how the brain organizes movement, and is now in our daily lexicon. Pain, illness and injuries all affect how our nervous system and brain react to events in us and around us. Feldenkrais' thesis is that our nervous system always does the best it can with the information it has, and learning through the nervous system is the theme that runs through this book. Coverage includes: Comparisons about similarities as well as differences between the different modalities. Theory and practice of how the Feldenkrais Method(R) can be applied in a variety of specific settings. Coverage of the research base that supports evidence-informed practices for clients Online video of theory and practice accessed by QR codes throughout the book

Clinical Reasoning and Decision Making in Physical Therapy - Facilitation, Assessment, and Implementation (Hardcover): Gina... Clinical Reasoning and Decision Making in Physical Therapy - Facilitation, Assessment, and Implementation (Hardcover)
Gina Maria Musolino, Gail Jensen
R2,466 Discovery Miles 24 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Clinical reasoning is an essential non-negotiable element for all health professionals. The ability of the health professional to demonstrate professional competence, compassion, and accountability depend on a foundation of sound clinical reasoning. The clinical reasoning process needs to bring together knowledge, experience, and understanding of people, the environment, and organizations along with a strong moral compass in making sound decisions and taking necessary actions. While clinical reasoning and the role of mentors has been a focus of the continued growth and development of residency programs in physical therapy, there is a critical need to have a broader, in-depth look at how educators across academic and clinical settings intentionally facilitate the development of clinical reasoning skills across one's career. Clinical Reasoning and Decision Making in Physical Therapy: Facilitation, Assessment, and Implementation fills this need by providing a comprehensive and in-depth focus on development of the patient-client management skills of clinical reasoning and clinical decision-making. It takes into account teaching and learning strategies, assessment, and technological applications across the continuum from novice to residents/fellows-in-training, along with academic and clinical faculty for both entry-level and specialist practice. Drs. Gina Maria Musolino and Gail Jensen have designed this comprehensive resource with contributions from professional colleagues. The text centers on life-long learning by encouraging the development of clinical reasoning abilities from professional education through residency education. The purpose of this book is to provide public health, disability, and rehabilitation professionals and practitioners evidence-based science with respect to health disparities faced by people with disabilities, especially people with mobility limitations; alternative methods of rehabilitation and exercise science for this population; assistive device technology; and, improved access to health care, employment, and social participation. According to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), approximately 57 million Americans live with a disability. Disability severity and types vary considerably, such that each individual with a disability faces unique physical, social, and environmental barriers in order to enjoy quality of life and full participation in society. A large research literature shows that people with disabilities face substantial employment and health disparities compared to people without disabilities. People with mobility limitations often experience secondary conditions to compound their primary disability. Hollar (2013) and Hollar and Lewis (2015) showed that people with mobility limitations were significantly more likely to experience obesity and lack of access to physical exercise. Other studies have shown that access to proper physical examination facilities and equipment remain a substantial barrier in many clinics and hospitals despite the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years ago. Research on alternative exercise programs and new assistive device technologies offers promise to improve physical functioning and exercise for people with mobility limitations. Furthermore, increased focus on biopsychosocial over traditional medical models for disability will help policymakers and the public to recognize the complex, contextual issues (e.g., personal, social, environmental) that affect the lives of people with disabilities. Readership includes public health practitioners and educators, disability and rehabilitation researchers, clinicians and sports medicine practitioners, and disability advocates. There have been general handbooks on disability, but advances in technology and alternative exercise programs, as well as novel disability health programs, are dispersed in the research literature. This book will help to highlight these programs for health policy experts, especially given the high health and social disparities experienced by this population.

This book is a compendium of articles providing insights into a range of contemporary ideas concerning the core yet unsettled clinical issues. Important aspects of pulmonary disorders are tackled such as occupational respiratory health hazards, asthma, or the role of vitamin D in obstructive airway diseases. Genotyping offers a clear promise in the diagnostics of chronic pulmonary lesions of autoimmune background. Cardiac and respiratory-driven pulsation of cerebrospinal fluid content offers novel arguments in the pathophysiologic savvy of a range of brain dysfunctional conditions, including respiratory-related hypoxic pathologies. Some other articles tackle the heady topics of rehabilitation medicine, offering an insight into research-underpinned diagnostics and practical management solutions in a range of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries that affect the human body's movement, particularly those controlled by the autonomic nervous system. The book is addressed to clinicians, researchers, physiotherapists, and medical professionals engaged in patient care.
