Professional Collaboration with Parents of Children with Disabilities (Paperback): L. Porter Professional Collaboration with Parents of Children with Disabilities (Paperback)
L. Porter
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The work of professionals with children with disabilities affects the children's family, while events at home affect what professionals can achieve with the children. This text describes how professionals can form collaborative relationships with the parents of the children in their care, to optimise the children's development and to enable both family members and professionals to work in the children's interests. It describes experiences of families who have a child with a disability and takes a new look at old assumptions that disability necessarily has a negative effect on families or that families themselves are in need of therapy simply by virtue of having a child with additional needs.

This text offers practical insights and guidelines for action by teachers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech pathologists and psychologists. It is a practical text that enables practitioners to offer a high-quality service to children while supporting the family in its role of nurturing their child with special needs.

Management of Spinal Cord Injuries - A Guide for Physiotherapists (Paperback): Lisa Harvey Management of Spinal Cord Injuries - A Guide for Physiotherapists (Paperback)
Lisa Harvey
R1,436 Discovery Miles 14 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Combining 25 years of clinical, research and teaching experience, Dr Lisa Harvey provides an innovative 5-step approach to the physiotherapy management of people with spinal cord injury. Based on the International Classification of Functioning, this approach emphasises the importance of setting goals which are purposeful and meaningful to the patient. These goals are related to performance of motor tasks analysed in terms of 6 key impairments. The assessment and treatment performance of each of these impairments for people with spinal cord injury is described in the following chapters: training motor tasksstrength trainingcontracture managementpain managementrespiratory managementcardiovascular fitness training

Dr Harvey develops readers' problem-solving skills equipping them to manage all types of spinal cord injuries. Central to these skills is an understanding of how people with different patterns of paralysis perform motor tasks and the importance of differentmuscles for motor tasks such as: transfers and bed mobility of peoplewheelchair mobilityhand function for people with tetraplegiastanding and walking with lower limb paralysis

This book is for students and junior physiotherapists with little or no experience in the area of spinal cord injury but with a general understanding of the principles of physiotherapy. It is also a useful tool for experienced clinicians, including those keen to explore the evidence base that supports different physiotherapy interventions.

Michael Shacklock
R1,725 Discovery Miles 17 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A groundbreaking approach to neural mobilization, this one-of-a-kind resource draws on the established Maitland movement diagram to present a completely new system for mobilization of the neural and musculoskeletal systems. The text guides readers through the complex subject of neurodynamics and the basic mechanisms in movement of the nervous system, systematically linking causal mechanisms to diagnosis and treatment of pain and common musculoskeletal problems. This new progressional method is ideal for diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders with neural involvement such as spinal and peripheral (extremity) disorders, the nerve root, dura and peripheral nerve. Unique approach applies and modifies Maitland techniques to neural mobilization, refining and improving practical skills for clinical physical therapists. A new movement diagram applies Maitland's established movement diagram to the nervous system and enables professionals to integrate musculoskeletal and neural mechanisms. New diagnostic categories of specific dysfunctions, focused on evidence-based research, are presented. Various treatment techniques for each diagnostic category are discussed. and applied to specific clinical problems such as neck pain, headache, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and low back pain. Summary and key points are indicated with symbols throughout the book. An accompanying CD-ROM provides real-time images of nerves moving and shows dynamic abnormalities of nerves. Illustrations show how neuromusculoskeletal problems develop in a way that uniquely links musculoskeletal and neural functions. Clinical case histories illustrate the key points related to scientific and clinical applications.

Deep Medicine - How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again (Hardcover): Eric Topol Deep Medicine - How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again (Hardcover)
Eric Topol 1
R895 R664 Discovery Miles 6 640 Save R231 (26%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A visit to a physician these days is cold: physicians spend most of their time typing at computers, making minimal eye contact. Appointments generally last only a few minutes, with scarce time for the doctor to connect to a patient's story, or explain how and why different procedures and treatments might be undertaken. As a result, errors abound: indeed, misdiagnosis is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States, trailing only heart disease, cancer, and stroke. This is because, despite having access to more resources than ever, doctors are vulnerable not just to the economic demand to see more patients, but to distraction, burnout, data overload, and their own intrinsic biases. Physicians are simply overmatched. As Eric Topol argues in Deep Medicine, artificial intelligence can help. Natural-language processing could automatically record notes from our doctor visits; virtual psychiatrists could better predict the risk of suicide or other mental health issues for vulnerable patients; deep-learning software will make every physician a master diagnostician; and we could even use smartphone apps to take our own medical "selfies" for skin exams and receive immediate analysis. . On top of that, the virtual smartphone assistants of today--Alexa, Siri, Cortana--could analyze our daily health data to reduce the need for doctor visits and trips to the emergency room, and support for people suffering from asthma, epilepsy, and heart disease. By integrating tools like these into their daily medical practice, doctors would be able to spend less time collecting and cataloging information, and more time providing thorough, intimate, and meaningful care for their patients, as no machine can. Artificial intelligence can also help remedy the debilitating cost of healthcare, both for individuals and the economy writ large. The medical sector now absorbs 20 percent of the US gross domestic product--it is largest sector by dollars and jobs. And it's very inefficient. Take the cost of medical scans: There are over 20 million medical scans performed in the US every day, and an MRI, for example, costs hundreds to thousands of dollars. AI could process 260 million medical scans (more than 2 weeks' worth) in less than 24 hours for a cost of only $1000. We pay billions and billions of dollars for the same work today. The American health care system needs a serious reboot, and artificial intelligence is just the thing to press the restart button. As innovative as it is hopeful, Deep Medicine ultimately shows us how we can leverage artificial intelligence for better care at lower costs with more empathy, for the benefit of patients and physicians alike.

Hypermobility Syndrome - Diagnosis and Management for Physiotherapists (Paperback): Rosemary J. Keer, Rodney Grahame Hypermobility Syndrome - Diagnosis and Management for Physiotherapists (Paperback)
Rosemary J. Keer, Rodney Grahame
R1,462 Discovery Miles 14 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Following a brief description of the historical and genetic background of the condition HMS is described in relation to other connective tissue disorders, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, the Marfan Syndrome etc. The hypermobility syndrome is distinct from hypermobility (as in one joint only), which most physiotherapists are familiar with, and this difference will be explored. Hypermobility, is something people are born with, but it does not necessarily produce symptoms. It is present in between 5-15% of the population. Many of these will suffer symptoms at some stage in their life. It may occur in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy or old age. Each of these stages is covered in the book, with detailed information on the presentation of the condition and its management. There are contributions from a variety of medical practitioners experienced in this field:. Consultant Rheumatologist, Professor R Grahame, Consultant Paediatrician, Dr K Murray, GP, Dr E Mansi, several physiotherapists, who specialise in different areas; Rosemary Keer (adults), Alison Middleditch (adolescents), Vicky Harding (Chronic pain), Jane Simmonds (Rehabilitation) & Sue Maillard (paediatric). There will also be a contribution from Sarah Gurley-Green, past Chairperson to the Hypermobility Syndrome association. Demonstrates how to identify the condition in the clinic. Discusses treatment and management strategies. Provides examples in the form of case studies. Includes details of a comprehensive assessment procedure, which differs depending on the stage of the disorder and the age of the patient. Features contributions by experts in a range of medical fields.

Pelvic Rehabilitation - The Manual Therapy and Exercise Guide Across the Lifespan (Paperback): Maureen Mason Pelvic Rehabilitation - The Manual Therapy and Exercise Guide Across the Lifespan (Paperback)
Maureen Mason; Foreword by Ginger Garner, Bruce Hogarth
R1,440 Discovery Miles 14 400 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book presents paradigms and programs for pelvic health conditions over the lifespan from childhood to senior years, with medical pearls and storytelling. Medical professionals as well as body workers, fitness trainers and community educators can glean critical health care knowledge as well as strategies for teamwork for client care. Health conditions pertaining to the pelvis are often under recognized, disregarded by most medical practitioners, and suffered in silence, humiliation and shame by most clients. The text will support global health care education and empowerment regarding pelvic health conditions and conservative care options. The text is integrative in considering the biopsychosocial model as well as current medical standards in pelvic rehabilitation treatment, as well as health promotion with nutrition and supplements.
