A groundbreaking approach to neural mobilization, this one-of-a-kind resource draws on the established Maitland movement diagram to present a completely new system for mobilization of the neural and musculoskeletal systems. The text guides readers through the complex subject of neurodynamics and the basic mechanisms in movement of the nervous system, systematically linking causal mechanisms to diagnosis and treatment of pain and common musculoskeletal problems. This new progressional method is ideal for diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders with neural involvement such as spinal and peripheral (extremity) disorders, the nerve root, dura and peripheral nerve. Unique approach applies and modifies Maitland techniques to neural mobilization, refining and improving practical skills for clinical physical therapists. A new movement diagram applies Maitland's established movement diagram to the nervous system and enables professionals to integrate musculoskeletal and neural mechanisms. New diagnostic categories of specific dysfunctions, focused on evidence-based research, are presented. Various treatment techniques for each diagnostic category are discussed. and applied to specific clinical problems such as neck pain, headache, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and low back pain. Summary and key points are indicated with symbols throughout the book. An accompanying CD-ROM provides real-time images of nerves moving and shows dynamic abnormalities of nerves. Illustrations show how neuromusculoskeletal problems develop in a way that uniquely links musculoskeletal and neural functions. Clinical case histories illustrate the key points related to scientific and clinical applications.

Get moving on that injury with this humorous guide to rehabilitation from the comfort of your home! Does it Hurt When I Do This? is designed to educate readers on the workings of the human body, how to keep it healthy, and how to prevent and rehabilitate injuries. In a light, humorous style that has endeared him to thousands of patients, Mark Salamon presents this "owner's manual for the human body" in a logical order, starting with very basic concepts and progressing gradually to more complex ideas. His continual references back to the basics stem from his observations over twenty-five years of patients who were frustrated because their doctors or therapists had never explained them. With a better understanding of how the body's different parts work together to protect itself from injury and repair itself if one occurs, readers learn how to care for all the parts together so injuries become less frequent and easier to fix. Guiding readers through hows and whys of rehabilitating injuries to specific body parts, starting with the feet and working up, Salamon emphasizes that this knowledge is meant to enhance, not replace, the reader's relationship with their physical therapist and doctor. When poor insurance coverage or high co-pays limit the number of office visits, the knowledge gleaned from this work helps patients better understand how to enhance and stick with their home programs, and when to seek help when things are not improving as expected.
Myofascial Induction (TM) - An anatomical approach to the treatment of fascial dysfunction describes the properties of the fascial network and provides therapeutic solutions for different types of fascial dysfunction. The material is presented in two volumes: Volume 1 analyzes in depth the theoretical aspects related to fascia and focuses on the therapeutic procedures of Myofascial Induction Therapy (MIT (TM)) for the upper body; Volume 2 summarizes and expands on the theoretical aspects and explains the therapeutic procedures of MIT for the lower body. Volume 1 is divided into two parts: Part 1 - The Science and Principles of Myofascial Induction and Part 2 - Practical Applications of Myofascial Induction - the Upper Body. Part 1 defines the fascia as a complex biological system before discussing its multiple characteristics. Part 2 is the practical part. Here the reader will find a wide range of manual therapeutic procedures which can be selected and used to build up the MIT treatments. These processes are explained in detail and are richly illustrated, in full color, with diagrams and photographs of their practical application in the body and in the treated samples of dissected tissues. Each chapter opens with an introduction offering to the reader some philosophical background as a reminder that philosophy allows us to relate the strictly scientific with the empirical. Praxis and empiricism are the basis of science. The author invites you to join the scientific fascial adventure that allows us to uncover areas of knowledge which may have been forgotten or which are not yet recognized as being related and which might still reveal relevant information. Once discovered, these facts can help us to better understand the kinesis of our body and so help the individual to change their body image and to improve their quality of life.

The effective management of pain is a problem which confronts all manual therapists. This book provides a clear picture of our current understanding of pain mechanisms and shows how that knowledge should inform approaches to treatment. The knowledge of pain science that the book conveys will help the therapist select the best approach to the clinical management of each patient. Different types of pain disorder may require different management strategies which may involve only one discipline or, at other times, a multidisciplinary team which may also include medical clinicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, nurses and other healthcare practitioners as well as manual therapists. The book is divided into three parts: An introduction to the concept of pain and its neurophysiological mechanisms. A review and discussion of current and potential evidence-based evaluation methods. A review and discussion of common types of functional pain disorders. This approach provides readers with a comprehensive reference to evidence-based information that should enable them to manage their clients' pain as effectively as possible.
Sarah Klamroth describes a novel treadmill training device, which applies additional perturbations to the walking surface and thereby simulating an uneven surface. In a pilot study the author investigated the immediate effects on gait and postural control in patients with Parkinson's Disease after a single training session of perturbation treadmill training. The results show that perturbation treadmill training is feasible for mildly to moderately affected Parkinson patients, and that one training session led to improvements in overground walking speed and gait variability in these patients.

Riema Abdunnur gives insight into publications focusing on performing violinists, particularly on those suffering from CMD, subsequently providing a better understanding to the unique work conditions of violinists, and enhancing diagnosis and therapeutic results by practitioner dentists. Moreover, the analysis of the included papers aims to reveal what exactly was studied in violinists regarding to CMD, and how far manual medicine was included there. The conclusion of the author is, playing violin could be classified as a potential factor associated with CMD in violinists. More researches that take the interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and manual medicine into special account are recommended.About the Author Riema Abdunnur did her research studies at Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria.
