Therapeutic Exercise for Children With Developmental Disabilities has been expanded and updated to include everything a student or professional needs to know when working with children with developmental disabilities. Continuing the emphasis on evidence-based practice from the previous editions, this comprehensive Fourth Edition enhances critical thinking and evaluation skills. Throughout the course of the text, Drs. Barbara H. Connolly and Patricia C. Montgomery present case studies of 5 children with various developmental disabilities to bring a problem-solving approach to each individual chapter topic. The case studies include 2 two children with cerebral palsy (GMFCS Levels I and V), a child with myelomeningocele, a child with Down syndrome, and a child with developmental coordination disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Each chapter's examination, evaluation, and intervention recommendations are accompanied by specific treatment objectives and therapeutic activities, plus a companion website with 17 videos, which contains 90 minutes of content to illustrate concepts. The fourteen chapter format effectively fits within a chapter per week course structure, or each chapter may be used as a stand alone module within any course. And as your students prepare to graduate, encourage them to keep this book to use as a clinically relevant reference as practicing PTAs!
This book outlines symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, and shows you how to fix them. What is pelvic organ prolapse - which 50% of women will experience - and can it be prevented? Urinary incontinence is treatable with physio. Women on average suffer symptoms for 7 years before going to a healthcare professional which has a huge effect on mental health. Pelvic floor issues are often only talked about in relation to pregnancy and childbirth. This is not just a "mum issue": high impact exercise (running, HIIT, CrossFit) affect the pelvic floor. Young athletes/gymnasts who have never had children are highly likely to suffer from incontinence. Women should not accept dysfunction as a "normal part of being a woman", but instead need to prioritize their pelvic floor health - this book shows that it is never too early and, crucially, never too late to do so.

Pain and discomfort related to the spine are extremely common, to the extent that back and neck pain may be considered part of the human condition. In most instances, interventions are not necessary. However, surgery can be required in some situations, and may be considered as a valuable option in others. In order to enable accurate patient counselling and to help in fine-tuning indications for surgery (for example, after unsatisfactory relief from conservative pain management), physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists should be aware of surgery rationales and techniques. In most cases, surgery does not stand on its own, and postoperative rehabilitation will benefit from a certain degree of surgical knowledge by the physiotherapist and rehabilitation specialist. Additionally, it is paramount that all spinal caregivers speak the same vocabulary and issue the same messages to the patient. This little book explains surgical reasoning and surgical techniques to non-surgeons. It aims at crossing the bridge between surgical and rehabilitation paradigms to the benefit of patients. The entire field is covered in a concise and comprehensive way, and will be a must-read in spinal rehabilitation practices.

Grounded in scientific and clinical evidence, this highly illustrated new guide gives an introduction to the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders using the Fascial Manipulation (FM) method developed by Luigi Stecco - the foremost scientifically valid method of evaluating and treating fascial dysfunction. It describes FM's history, anatomy and physiology of fasciae, indications and contraindications, mechanisms of action, and details of the subjective and physical techniques used to manage disorders. A Practical Guide to Fascial Manipulation focuses on concepts around evaluating the fascia based on functional testing, movement and direction in specific spatial planes, and the location of specific areas to treat safely. With an emphasis throughout on accessible practical information, the book is also supported by a website - www.guidefascial.com - containing procedural video clips and an image bank.
In Functional Exercise Prescription Eyal Lederman presents a revolutionary new approach for exercise prescription that uses the individual's own movement repertoire. The book demonstrates how daily activities (the life gym) can be amplified to provide the necessary movement challenges to support movement rehabilitation in many musculoskeletal and pain conditions. Hence, all activities can become remedial without the need to prescribe unfamiliar exercise; in other words, 'how to exercise without exercise' or 'how to rehabilitate without exercise'. People recover from most musculoskeletal and pain conditions through three key processes: repair, adaptation, and alleviation of symptoms. The author explains how to identify the individual's recovery process and how to select the appropriate daily or sporting activities, and, how they can be modified to support recovery. Functional Exercise Prescription is a dramatic departure from the traditional strength and conditioning models that have been used for rehabilitation. The book explores the limitation of these models and explains how they can be replaced by functional daily activities ('functioncise'). It provides the practitioner with practical tools to construct a tailor-made plan for each individual to help expedite and optimize their recovery. Most rehabilitation can be constructed from a small familiar set of daily or sports activities. All human physical activity is exercise. Life is your gym.
Qualitative research can provide a great depth of understanding for health professionals in practice. Although many general research texts used in health discipline research courses present a broad spectrum of research methods, their discussion of qualitative methods is often limited. Qualitative Research in the Health Professions by Drs. William A. Pitney, Jenny Parker, Stephanie Mazerolle Singe, and Kelly Potteiger, is a practical and straightforward text for those learning about qualitative research in the health professions. In Qualitative Research in the Health Professions, readers will acquire skills in mastering: • Introductory concepts of qualitative research, how it compares to quantitative research, and how to conceptualize a qualitative study • How to conduct a qualitative research study and present findings, including sections on collecting and analyzing data, ensuring trustworthiness of the data, and attending to ethical issues • Advanced concepts including various forms of qualitative research, how to mix quantitative and qualitative methods, and how to evaluate qualitative research Each chapter includes activities and exercises to further students’ understanding and the text also includes personal commentaries from scholarly practitioners in various health professions underscoring the value and importance of qualitative research. Qualitative Research in the Health Professions will help current and future practitioners master the principles of qualitative research, understand published qualitative studies, and apply these findings in furthering evidence-based practice.
