Kelly McEvenue; Foreword by Patsy Rodenburg
R507 R471 Discovery Miles 4 710 Save R36 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

F.M. Alexander developed the Alexander Technique of movement in the early 20th century. Combining vocal clarity and body movement, Alexander developed a performance coaching method that is used by dancers, actors, singers, etc. In The Actor and the Alexander Technique, Kelly McEvenue writes the first basic book about how this unique technique can help actors feel more natural on the stage. She provides warm-up exercises, "balance" and "center" exercises, spatial awareness exercises. She talks about imitation, the use of masks, nudity on the stage, dealing with injury and aging. She talks about specific productions that have successfully used the Alexander Technique, such as "The Lion King". With a foreword by Patsy Rodenburg of our own phenomenal The Actor Speaks this is a book that belongs on the shelf of every working and studying actor.

Monika Radecki
R312 Discovery Miles 3 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the loose-leaf version of Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition, which offers students a less expensive, printed version of the text. Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition With HKPropel Access, gives students a firm concept of musculoskeletal anatomy by systematically assembling each component of the human body. Layer by layer, readers will study bones, ligaments, joints, and muscles as well as the nerves and blood vessels that supply these muscles that are essential for movement. With full-color visual aids and activities that invite readers to apply their understanding of structural anatomy to their own lives, the fourth edition is ideally suited for students studying physical activity because it explores how the structural anatomy of the human body facilitates movement. Part I of the text introduces the basics of structural anatomy. It describes how bones, joints, muscles, nerves, and other essential anatomy work together to allow for fundamental movement. Part II details the anatomy of the upper extremity region, including the shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. Part III of the text explores the anatomy of the head, spinal column, thorax, and pelvis. These chapters include unique coverage not found in other anatomy texts, explaining how the brain, heart, and lungs-as the power centers of the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems-affect movement. Part IV discusses the anatomy of the lower extremity region: the hip, thigh, knee, lower leg, ankle, and foot. Parts II, III, and IV each end with a summary table that offers a quick reference for the components of the body region featured in that part. Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition, contains nearly 400 photos, illustrations, and infographics to help readers visualize structural anatomy and engage with their coursework. Throughout the book, Hands On exercises instruct readers to physically identify anatomical structures on themselves or on a partner, and Focus On sidebars illustrate circumstances in everyday activity that relate to the specific anatomical structures in the text. Pop quizzes provide readers an opportunity to strengthen their clinical reasoning skills by asking them to identify the muscles shown in the accompanying photo. The fourth edition is further enhanced with the addition of new online learning tools -all of which can be assigned, and progress tracked, by instructors directly through HKPropel: Anatomy labeling and coloring sheets offer students nearly 100 interactive activities that test their knowledge of anatomical structures and function. Learning activities; true-false, multiple-choice, and fill-in-the-blank questions; and functional movement exercises ensure students have a firm grasp of key points from each chapter. Chapter quizzes (assessments) may also be assigned; these are automatically graded to test comprehension of critical concepts. Readers of Kinetic Anatomy, Fourth Edition, will learn what structures are involved in movement and how those structures should function, allowing them to identify problems and correct them to enhance physical activity. Anyone interested in just how their body functions during physical activity and how certain overuse or misuse can affect certain anatomical structures will benefit from this book. Note: A code for accessing HKPropel is included with all new print books.

In order to effectively examine, test, and treat patients with exercise, physical therapists need to understand how physiology from the cellular to the systems level provides the basis for normal responses to exercise. But that is not enough. Knowledge about pathophysiology, the changes that lead to abnormal responses to exercise in different patient populations, is also essential. Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy: Examination, Testing, and Exercise Prescription for Movement-Related Disorders is a comprehensive reference created to answer the "why" and the "how" to treat patients with exercise by offering both comprehensive information from the research literature, as well as original patient cases. Dr. Debra Coglianese, along with her contributors, have arranged Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy into three parts: foundations of physiological responses, pathophysiology of deconditioning and physiology of training, and pathophysiology considerations and clinical practice. The chapters present the physiology and pathophysiology for defined patient populations consistent with the American Physical Therapy Association's Guide to Physical Therapy Practice. Patient cases also supplement each chapter to illustrate how understanding the content of the chapter informs physical therapy examination, testing, and treatment. The patient/client management model from the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice defines the structure of the patient cases, and the International Classification of Function, Disability, and Health (ICF) model of disablement has been inserted into each patient case. Highlighted "Clinician Comments" appear throughout each patient case to point out the critical thinking considerations. Instructors in educational settings can visit www.efacultylounge.com for additional materials to be used for teaching in the classroom. Clinical Exercise Pathophysiology for Physical Therapy: Examination, Testing, and Exercise Prescription for Movement-Related Disorders is a ground-breaking reference for the physical therapy student or clinician looking to understand how physiology and pathophysiology relate to responses to exercise in different patient populations.

NeuroKinetic Therapy - An Innovative Approach to Manual Muscle Testing (Paperback): David Weinstock NeuroKinetic Therapy - An Innovative Approach to Manual Muscle Testing (Paperback)
David Weinstock
R498 R435 Discovery Miles 4 350 Save R63 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

NeuroKinetic Therapy is based on the premise that when an injury has occurred, certain muscles shut down or become inhibited, forcing other muscles to become overworked. This compensation pattern can create pain or tightness. By applying light pressure that the client then resists, the practitioner can evaluate the strength or weakness of each muscle, revealing the sources of injury and retraining the client's body to remove the compensation patterns--reprogramming the body at the neural level. This easy-to-follow practitioner's manual presents a series of muscle tests specially designed to uncover and resolve compensation patterns in the body. Author David Weinstock begins by explaining how this approach stimulates the body and mind to resolve pain. Organized anatomically, each section of the book includes clear photographs demonstrating correct positioning of the muscle accompanied by concise explanations and instructions. Labeled anatomical illustrations appear at the end of each section showing the relationships between the muscles and muscle groups. This essential resource is especially useful for physical therapists, chiropractors, orthopedists, and massage therapists looking for new ways to treat underlying causes of pain.

This comprehensive guide introduces Body-Mind Centering, the internationally recognized field pioneered by dancer and occupational therapist Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen. Devoting thirty-five years to a systematic investigation of the relations between bodily experience and the anatomical maps of science, Bainbridge Cohen independently discovered many of the principles that underlie Feldenkrais work, cranial osteopathy, Rolfing, dance therapy, and Zero Balancing. Experienced BMC practitioner Linda Hartley demonstrates the basic philosophy and key elements of Body-Mind Centering. Drawing on animal and infant movements, she takes readers through the wondrous realms of Bainbridge Cohen's pantheon--from the 'minds' of the skeletal and muscular systems to the quite different inner lives of digestive, lymphatic, urinary, respiratory, vocal, circulatory, endocrine, and reproductive organs. Her choreography ultimately brings us into the states of consciousness of skins, cells, blood, fat, cerebrospinal fluid, nervous system, and brain. Hartley's explorations of the images, feelings, sensations, and intuitions of the diverse organs and cells lead to exercises that gently guide students in ways of discovering and integrating their bodies' multidimensional aspects.

The legacy of Geoff Maitland and his seminal work, Peripheral Manipulation, continues in this fifth edition, with Elly Hengeveld and Kevin Banks leading an international team of experts who demonstrate how to manage peripheral neuromusculoskeletal disorders using the principles and practice of the Maitland Concept. Together, they ensure the heart of the Concept beats on by promoting collaborative decision-making with the patient at centre and emphasizing the art and science of observation, listening, palpation and movement skills. A key feature of the new edition focuses on a more evidence-based and analytical view of the role of mobilization and manipulation in clinical practice. The authors have written in a way that reflects their application of the Maitland Concept and how they have integrated techniques in the light of advancement in professional knowledge. Each chapter stands alone as a 'master class'. The text is systematically arranged focusing on detailed assessment, clinical reasoning and re-assessment to determine the physical dysfunction and efficacy of manipulative physiotherapy techniques, while also advocating continuous communication and interaction. Techniques of passive mobilization are also described, specifically designed around the individual patient's condition. All the chapters are written from a clinical perspective and review the evidence which informs how to deal with and manage peripheral joint pain as they present to the practitioner. Furthermore, each peripheral region (craniomandibular, upper limbs and lower limbs) is considered from the point of view of best practice in analysing and hypothesising subjective data, examination, treatment and management of peripheral pain conditions. Brand new to the fifth edition is the addition of a companion website - Maitland's Manipulation eResources (www.maitlandsresources.com) - providing access to a range of valuable learning materials which include videos, MCQs, interactive case studies, research links, and bonus chapters. World-leading experts provide evidence relating the Maitland Concept to clinical practice Evidence supporting practice Covers both subjective and physical examination Best practice management using mobilization and manipulation Case studies - how and when to integrate the Maitland Concept into clinical practice Chapter-based learning outcomes, keywords and glossaries Companion website - Maitland's Manipulation eResources (www.maitlandsresources.com) Expert perspectives and supporting evidence Case studies Companion website - www.maitlandsresources.com - containing: Video Bank of over 480 video clips showing examination and treatment techniques Image Bank of over 1,000 illustrations Interactive case studies Over 200 MCQs Bonus chapters on additional principles and techniques of examination / treatment Weblink references to abstracts

The purpose of this book is to provide public health, disability, and rehabilitation professionals and practitioners evidence-based science with respect to health disparities faced by people with disabilities, especially people with mobility limitations; alternative methods of rehabilitation and exercise science for this population; assistive device technology; and, improved access to health care, employment, and social participation. According to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), approximately 57 million Americans live with a disability. Disability severity and types vary considerably, such that each individual with a disability faces unique physical, social, and environmental barriers in order to enjoy quality of life and full participation in society. A large research literature shows that people with disabilities face substantial employment and health disparities compared to people without disabilities. People with mobility limitations often experience secondary conditions to compound their primary disability. Hollar (2013) and Hollar and Lewis (2015) showed that people with mobility limitations were significantly more likely to experience obesity and lack of access to physical exercise. Other studies have shown that access to proper physical examination facilities and equipment remain a substantial barrier in many clinics and hospitals despite the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years ago. Research on alternative exercise programs and new assistive device technologies offers promise to improve physical functioning and exercise for people with mobility limitations. Furthermore, increased focus on biopsychosocial over traditional medical models for disability will help policymakers and the public to recognize the complex, contextual issues (e.g., personal, social, environmental) that affect the lives of people with disabilities. Readership includes public health practitioners and educators, disability and rehabilitation researchers, clinicians and sports medicine practitioners, and disability advocates. There have been general handbooks on disability, but advances in technology and alternative exercise programs, as well as novel disability health programs, are dispersed in the research literature. This book will help to highlight these programs for health policy experts, especially given the high health and social disparities experienced by this population.
