Language and Crime - Constructing Offenders and Victims in Newspaper Reports (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Ulrike Tabbert Language and Crime - Constructing Offenders and Victims in Newspaper Reports (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Ulrike Tabbert
R3,579 Discovery Miles 35 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a systematic introduction to the linguistic analysis of newspaper reports on crime. The author demonstrates how the linguistic analysis of newspaper texts helps to gain insight into the construction of offenders and victims in those texts and links the findings to criminological frameworks. Tabbert employs Critical Stylistics to explore the description of participants, the presentation of speech as well as actions, states or events, and other linguistic devices employed by journalists to present a particular image of an offender or a victim in the press. This book shows the fruitfulness of an interdisciplinary approach to reveal predominant discourse on crime in society and will be of great interest to researchers in linguistics, criminology and media studies.

The Journalist as Reformer - Henry Demarest Lloyd and Wealth Against Commonwealth (Hardcover, New): Richard Digby-Junger The Journalist as Reformer - Henry Demarest Lloyd and Wealth Against Commonwealth (Hardcover, New)
Richard Digby-Junger
R2,911 Discovery Miles 29 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Henry Demarest Lloyd was one of the post-bellum 19th-century's best known journalists and non-fiction writers. In fact, only E.L. Godkin exceeded Lloyd in influence and prestige, and Godkin wrote no book-length expose with the impact of Lloyd's 1894 Wealth Against Commonwealth. This biography, based in part on previously unpublished archival information, is a study of the mentality of the journalist as an advocate for reform. It is an examination of Wealth Against Commonwealth, the most influential expose and "starting point for every public investigation" of the late 19th-century industrial monopolies. Lloyd's pre- and post-Wealth journalism is investigated as well, including "Story of a Great Monopoly," Lloyd's 1881 Atlantic Monthly article said to be the first example of American muckraking, and Lloyd's published investigations of reforms such as cooperatives, labor arbitration, minimum wage, and social security. His contact with a variety of his intellectual contemporaries is also featured, including Horace Greeley, Jane Addams, Ida M. Tarbell, Samuel F. Gompers, Clarence S. Darrow, Joseph Medill, Henry George, William Dean Howells, and Eugene V. Debs.

Taking Sides - a memoir about love, war, and changing the world (Hardcover): Sherine Tadros Taking Sides - a memoir about love, war, and changing the world (Hardcover)
Sherine Tadros
R602 R539 Discovery Miles 5 390 Save R63 (10%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The deeply moving memoir of an award-winning war correspondent turned activist - and her rousing defence of human rights in times of resurgent authoritarianism. As a broadcast journalist for Sky News and Al Jazeera, Sherine Tadros was trained to tell only the facts, as dispassionately as possible. But how can you remain neutral when reporting from war zones, or witnessing brutal state repression? For twenty-six years, Tadros grew up in the quiet surroundings of her family's London home, and yet injustice was something her Egyptian immigrant parents could never shelter her from. From her first journalistic assignment trapped inside a war zone in the Gaza Strip, to covering the Arab uprisings that changed the course of history, Tadros searched for ways to make a difference in people's lives. But it wasn't until her fiance left her on their wedding day, and her life fell apart, that she found the courage to pursue her true purpose. It was the beginning of a journey leading to her current work for Amnesty International at the United Nations, where she lobbies governments to ensure that human rights are protected around the world. With the compassion and verve of a clear-sighted campaigner and a natural storyteller, Tadros shares her remarkable journey from witnessing injustice to fighting it head-on in the corridors of power.

Get the Damn Story - Homer Bigart and the Great Age of American Newspapers (Hardcover): Thomas W Lippman Get the Damn Story - Homer Bigart and the Great Age of American Newspapers (Hardcover)
Thomas W Lippman
R747 Discovery Miles 7 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The captivating story of an influential journalist demonstrates the value of a free press to democratic society In the decades between the Great Depression and the advent of cable television, when daily newspapers set the conversational agenda in the United States, the best reporter in the business was a rumpled, hard-drinking figure named Homer Bigart. Despite two Pulitzers and a host of other prizes, he quickly faded from public view after retirement. Few today know the extent to which he was esteemed by his peers. Get the Damn Story is the first comprehensive biography to encompass all of Bigart's journalism, including both his war reporting and coverage of domestic events. Writing for the New York Herald Tribune and the New York Times, Bigart brought to life many events that defined the era-the wars in Europe, the Pacific, Korea, and Vietnam; the civil rights movement; the creation of Israel; the end of colonialism in Africa; and the Cuban Revolution. The news media's collective credibility may have diminished in the age of Twitter, but Bigart's career demonstrates the value to a democratic society of a relentless, inquiring mind examining its institutions and the people who run them. The principle remains the same today: the truth matters. Historians and journalists alike will find Bigart's story well worth reading.

Journalism (Hardcover): Tim P. Vos Journalism (Hardcover)
Tim P. Vos
R7,767 Discovery Miles 77 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume sets out the state-of-the-art in the discipline of journalism at a time in which the practice and profession of journalism is in serious flux. While journalism is still anchored to its history, change is infecting the field. The profession, and the scholars who study it, are reconceptualizing what journalism is in a time when journalists no longer monopolize the means for spreading the news. Here, journalism is explored as a social practice, as an institution, and as memory. The roles, epistemologies, and ethics of the field are evolving. With this in mind, the volume revisits classic theories of journalism, such as gatekeeping and agenda-setting, but also opens up new avenues of theorizing by broadening the scope of inquiry into an expanded journalism ecology, which now includes citizen journalism, documentaries, and lifestyle journalism, and by tapping the insights of other disciplines, such as geography, economics, and psychology. The volume is a go-to map of the field for students and scholars-highlighting emerging issues, enduring themes, revitalized theories, and fresh conceptualizations of journalism.

Carolyn M. Edy
R2,575 Discovery Miles 25 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Honorable Mention recipient for the American Journalism Historians Association Book of the Year Award, this book outlines the rich history of more than 250 women who worked as war correspondents up through World War II, while demonstrating the ways in which the press and the military both promoted and prevented their access to war. Despite the continued presence of individual female war correspondents in news accounts, if not always in war zones, it was not until 1944 that the military recognized these individuals as a group and began formally considering sex as a factor for recruiting and accrediting war correspondents. This group identity created obstacles for women who had previously worked alongside men as "war correspondents," while creating opportunities for many women whom the military recruited to cover woman's angle news as "women war correspondents." This book also reveals the ways the military and the press, as well as women themselves, constructed the concepts of "woman war correspondent" and "war correspondent" and how these concepts helped and hindered the work of all war correspondents even as they challenged and ultimately expanded the public's understanding of war and of women.

The Press and Politics in Israel - The Jerusalem Post from 1932 to the Present (Hardcover): Erwin Frenkel The Press and Politics in Israel - The Jerusalem Post from 1932 to the Present (Hardcover)
Erwin Frenkel
R2,908 Discovery Miles 29 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This informal history by a former long-time editor of The Jerusalem Post represents the only book to date that depicts the relationship between the press and the political system in Israel. This is an invaluable insider's report of Israel's only English-language daily newspaper and its role in society and in political developments from the 1930s to the present. Erwin Frenkel's story is a chronological account of the newspaper from the days of Palestine under the British mandate system, through independence, to the 1990s. It shows how the newspaper has functioned both in support of and in opposition to various governments and political parties.

Press and Speech Freedoms in the World, from Antiquity until 1998 - A Chronology (Hardcover, New): Louis E. Ingelhart Press and Speech Freedoms in the World, from Antiquity until 1998 - A Chronology (Hardcover, New)
Louis E. Ingelhart
R2,599 Discovery Miles 25 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although Americans tend to take the concept and protection of free expression for granted, free press and free speech are at best only tentatively established in some nations of the world. Covering prehistoric times to mid-1998, this book provides a year-by-year report of the efforts to free the press throughout the world. Since the American concept of free speech came from England, the early chapters place a heavy emphasis on events in England, while later chapters include other nations throughout the world. Ingelhart provides a thorough overview of free press and free speech principles and the continuing effort to extend those freedoms almost everywhere.

James Bernstein, William Elliott, James Lemert, Karl Nestvold, William Rosenberg
R2,941 Discovery Miles 29 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The most definitive report ever on verdict effects, this book gives striking new evidence that media assessments of presidential debates sway voters. The authors conducted 2,350 surveys and extensive analysis of news reports to scrutinize the post-debate news of 1988. They also examined the effects of the attack ads used by Bush and Dukakis. They found that the news media consistently downplay debate content and instead emphasize their own views on candidate performance--media verdicts influence voters as much as the debates themselves.

Extensive content analyses and more than 2,350 surveys were conducted to analyze media verdicts on the 1988 debates. The verdicts on Bush, Dukakis, Quayle, and Bentsen announced in post-debate newscasts are compared with those from debates in 1984, 1980 and 1976. The study finds that the news media consistently downplay debate content and instead emphasize their own views on candidate performance. These media verdicts influence voters as much as the debates themselves. The study also examines the effects of attack ads used by Bush and Dukakis, and finds that they backfired--network news probably rebroadcast more excerpts of attack ads in 1988 than ever before. Television journalists, the essays in this book show, have become increasingly less interested in how the debates served the information needs of the voters and increasingly more preoccupied with how they affected the ambitions of the candidates. A noticeable trend in 1988 was as the fall debates went on, voters' beliefs that further debates would be helpful to them went down. Another finding of the study deals with a huge tactical error that the League of Women Voters committed by simultaneously announcing its withdrawal and blasting the format and ground rules imposed on it by the Commission on Presidential Debates. Also, the spin doctors who continually spouted insider information during the 1988 campaign gained more legitimacy and impact than ever before--and had a very strong effect on American public affairs journalism. This intriguing book, which also provides policy recommendations for the debates, their sponsors, and the news media, is useful to journalists, researchers, and civic groups concerned with elections, government, campaign reform, and communications.

This book argues the discursive construction of the EU in national newspapers is pivotal in creating an environment of Euroscepticism. It will challenge the persuasive, manipulative and prejudicial language, sometimes peddled in the influential UK Murdoch and Italian Berlusconi press. The foci are the key Eurosceptic triggers of the euro; the subsequent national economic crises; and immigration, investigated through major events covered over two decades, including the UK's recent Brexit vote. The book will explore the national responses to the post-war project; how the EU is understood through the prism of nationhood; and how that has now manifested itself in Euroscepticism in both countries, lastly articulated through interviews with British and Italian politicians and journalists involved. It will include Euroscepticism's latest chapter. The increasingly key protagonists of the UK Independence Party and Italy's Five Star Movement, want to take Britain out of the EU and Italy out of the euro - covered in the Murdoch and Berlusconi press. This book offers a rigorous academic analysis presented in an accessible style to experts and laypersons alike, exploring concrete articulations of Euroscepticism in the press - Selling the Public Short.

Charles Dickens's Our Mutual Friend - A Publishing History (Paperback): Sean Grass Charles Dickens's Our Mutual Friend - A Publishing History (Paperback)
Sean Grass
R1,625 Discovery Miles 16 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Even within the context of Charles Dickens's history as a publishing innovator, Our Mutual Friend is notable for what it reveals about Dickens as an author and about Victorian publishing. Marking Dickens's return to the monthly number format after nearly a decade of writing fiction designed for weekly publication in All the Year Round, Our Mutual Friend emerged against the backdrop of his failing health, troubled relationship with Ellen Ternan, and declining reputation among contemporary critics. In his subtly argued publishing history, Sean Grass shows how these difficulties combined to make Our Mutual Friend an extraordinarily odd novel, no less in its contents and unusually heavy revisions than in its marketing by Chapman and Hall, its transformation from a serial into British and U.S. book editions, its contemporary reception by readers and reviewers, and its delightfully uneven reputation among critics in the 150 years since Dickens's death. Enhanced by four appendices that offer contemporary accounts of the Staplehurst railway accident, information on archival materials, transcripts of all of the contemporary reviews, and a select bibliography of editions, Grass's book shows why this last of Dickens's finished novels continues to intrigue its readers and critics.

The Israeli-Egyptian Peace Process in the Reporting of Western Journalists (Hardcover): Mohammed El-Nawawy The Israeli-Egyptian Peace Process in the Reporting of Western Journalists (Hardcover)
Mohammed El-Nawawy
R2,913 Discovery Miles 29 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Of the enormous number of books published on the Arab-Israeli conflict, most focus on its history or the political dimensions of the current peace process. None, however, has provided an in-depth look at the relationship between those who shape the events and the Western journalists who cover them. In this bold new study, Mohammed A. el-Nawawy explores the ways in which government officials try to manipulate the news media, how the reporters contend with such interference, the professional and newsmaking roles of the journalists, and how their demographic and educational backgrounds influence their coverage of this crucial time and place. Through interviews with 168 Western correspondents--94 in Israel and 74 in Egypt--who, together, represent more than 88 percent of the whole population of foreign correspondents in the Middle East, the author provides an invaluable source of information on the day-to-day activities of reporters in the region, as well as their interactions with government officials.

Discovering Journalism (Hardcover, New): Warren G. Bovee Discovering Journalism (Hardcover, New)
Warren G. Bovee
R2,918 Discovery Miles 29 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Journalism is the branch of mass communications that provides large numbers of people with the knowledge they need to help them make good decisions about issues currently affecting their personal and public lives. Journalism not only provides news but also presents interpretation, evaluation, and persuasion. Any discussion about journalism requires a common understanding of basic terms and concepts. By defining what journalism is, this book provides the answers to many questions and debates about the current state of the mass media: What is news? Is journalism concerned with more than news? What are the purposes of editorials? Is it good or bad to combine journalism and fiction? Is it possible to report the news objectively? How are public relations and advertising related to journalism? This coherent, general theory explores the function and roles of journalism vital to our personal and public well-being and offers valuable insight in areas affected by journalism such as politics, education, and the law.
