Plant Here The Standard (Hardcover): Dennis Griffiths Plant Here The Standard (Hardcover)
Dennis Griffiths
R2,952 Discovery Miles 29 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Plant Here the Standard tells the story of the world's oldest evening newspaper, the (London) Evening Standard. Commencing in the time of Oliver Cromwell, it traces the history of the Baldwin Family, fearless Protestant publishers, whose successors launched The Standard in 1827. Later owners of the paper were to include: C.Arthur Pearson, founder of the Daily Express; Lord Beaverbrook; and, now, Lord Rothermere. And throughout there are tales of the paper's scoops, its famous journalists and cartoonists, and its political involvements.

I Want to Thank My Brain for Remembering ME - A Memoir (Hardcover, 1st ed): Jimmy Breslin I Want to Thank My Brain for Remembering ME - A Memoir (Hardcover, 1st ed)
Jimmy Breslin
R1,003 Discovery Miles 10 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Call it a miracle, fate, pure luck, or just another day in the city where nothing is usual, but in 1991 Jimmy Breslin narrowly escaped death - which inspired him to write this book about his life. Two years ago, Breslin was having trouble getting his left eyelid to open and close. This was too peculiar to ignore, so Breslin decided to pay a rare visit to his doctor. As it turned out, the eyelid was a matter of nerves. But extensive testing revealed something unrelated and life-threatening: he had an aneurysm in his brain - a thin, ballooned artery wall that could burst and kill him at any moment unless he opted for a risky surgical procedure. Breslin agreed to the surgery and at age sixty-five, grateful for this miracle (what else could you call it?), began taking stock of his remarkable life.

A History of the Norwegian Press, 1660-2015 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Hans Fredrik Dahl A History of the Norwegian Press, 1660-2015 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Hans Fredrik Dahl
R2,667 R1,991 Discovery Miles 19 910 Save R676 (25%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the course of the nineteenth century the advent of printed pamphlets, with their news and advertisements, gave every town along Norway's long coast - populated by farmers, fishermen, clergy, businessmen and shopkeepers - a common language and a public arena for news and ideas. In Norway alone, the number of titles grew from a handful to a hundred in the course of the century. From 1900 to 1940 the number of papers swelled to two hundred and seventy - the number that remains today. The press system created a substantial structure, which would prove vital for many of the later media outlets that developed over the twentieth century with the breakthrough of new technologies - cinema industry, radio broadcasting, television and the internet. Newspapers generated the money and power for the development of these media, thus shaping such media and determining, or at least influencing, their perception and reception in Norwegian society. The press in Norway is therefore at the core of the modern media system and its rich history.

An Ambrose Bierce Companion (Hardcover, New): Robert L. Gale An Ambrose Bierce Companion (Hardcover, New)
Robert L. Gale
R2,483 Discovery Miles 24 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ambrose Bierce was born in 1842 and mysteriously disappeared in 1914. During his lifetime, he was a controversial and prolific writer, and there is growing interest in his works. As a Union soldier during the Civil War, he witnessed bloodshed and the atrocities of battle. After the war, he began a career as a journalist in San Francisco, where many of his newspaper columns were filled with venom and daring. In addition, he wrote war stories and tales of the supernatural, along with an assortment of poems. Today, he is probably best remembered as the author of "The Devil's Dictionary, " originally published as "The Cynic's Dictionary" in 1906. This reference is a guide to his life and writings.

An opening essay overviews Bierce's contribution to literature and journalism, and a chronology summarizes the most important events in his life. The bulk of the Companion comprises alphabetically arranged entries on Bierce's major works and characters and on historical persons and writers who figured prominently in his life and career. Thus the volume provides coverage of Bierce's contemporaries, many of whom he satirized in his scathing newspaper columns. Many of the entries list works for further reading, and the book closes with a selected, general bibliography. Because of Bierce's concern with so many issues of his day, the volume offers a valuable perspective on American culture during the time in which he lived.

Media Ownership and Concentration in America (Hardcover, New): Eli M. Noam Media Ownership and Concentration in America (Hardcover, New)
Eli M. Noam
R4,022 Discovery Miles 40 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The concentration of private power over media has been the subject of intense public debate around the world. Critics have long feared waves of mergers creating a handful of large media firms that would hold sway over public opinion and endanger democracy and innovation. But others believe with equal fervor that the Internet and deregulation have opened the media landscape significantly. How concentrated has the American information sector really become? What are the facts about American media ownership? In this contentious environment, Eli Noam provides a comprehensive and balanced survey of media concentration with a methodical, scientific approach. He assembles a wealth of data from the last 25 years about mass media such as radio, television, film, music, and print publishing, as well as the Internet, telecommunications, and media-related information technology. After examining 100 separate media and network industries in detail, Noam provides a powerful summary and analysis of concentration trends across industries and major media sectors. He also looks at local media power, vertical concentration, and the changing nature of media ownership through financial institutions and private equity. The results reveal a reality much more complex than the one painted by advocates on either side of the debate. They show a dynamic system that fluctuates around long-term concentration trends driven by changing economics and technology. Media Ownership and Concentration in America will be essential reading and a trove of information for scholars and students in media, telecommunications, IT, economics, and the history of business, as well as media industry professionals, business researchers, and policy makers around the world. Critics and defenders of media trends alike will find much that confirms and refutes their world view. But the next round of their debate will be shaped by the facts presented in this book.

Radical Journalism - Resurgence, Reform, Reaction (Paperback): Seamus Farrell, Eugenia. Siapera, George Souvlis Radical Journalism - Resurgence, Reform, Reaction (Paperback)
Seamus Farrell, Eugenia. Siapera, George Souvlis
R1,164 Discovery Miles 11 640 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This edited volume offers a state-of-the-art synthesis of the historical role of radical journalism, its present iterations, and plans for the future of a journalism that is committed to liberatory movements and politics. At a time of profound crisis and stagnation for mainstream journalism, radical journalism seems to be riding a wave. New outlets, including those – like Jacobin – with a global reach, have sprung up, presenting a new generation of unapologetically progressive publications with an emancipatory agenda. Understanding the role and place of radical journalism becomes even more urgent given the current political climate in a (post) pandemic world with heightened inequalities and intensified pauperisation. Drawing on contributions from leading academics, this collection considers: • How new outlets fit in the genealogy of (radical) journalism and what their flourishing can tell us about the present and future of emancipatory politics and the role of the radical journalist; • What these new forms and publications mean for mainstream journalism and its persisting problems of financial sustainability and professional journalistic labour; • Important challenges presented by, for example, the resurgence of fascism, authoritarianism and the mainstreaming of the far right; • Essential questions of what radical journalism looks like today, what forms it takes or should take, and what its future might be. Radical Journalism is recommended reading for advanced students and journalists working at the intersection of journalism, politics, and sociology.

The British Periodical Press and the French Revolution 1789-99 (Hardcover, New): S. Andrews The British Periodical Press and the French Revolution 1789-99 (Hardcover, New)
S. Andrews
R1,536 Discovery Miles 15 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study challenges the conventional polarities used to describe British politics of the 1790s: Pitt versus Fox, Burke versus Paine, Church versus Dissent, ruling class versus working class, Jacobin versus anti-Jacobin. Such polarities were sedulously promoted by Pitt's wartime government, which applied "Jacobin" shamelessly to all its critics and opponents, and thus foreshadowed the McCarthyite tactic of guilt by association. The author seeks to make the less strident but more persuasive contemporary voices again audible. He takes seriously those who who deplored Britain's alliance with the partitioners of Poland.

Terra Ziporyn
R2,774 Discovery Miles 27 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A well-researched, qualitative analysis of how the US mass media covered typhoid fever, diptheria, and syphilis from 1870 to 1920. Ziporyn, a free-lance writer and former American Association for the Advancement of Science mass media fellow, finds consistently high press coverage of typhoid fever contrasted with media disinterest in diptheria and cautious reporting about syphilis. The press's approaches differed, she explains, because the news media responded to dissimilar social values about typhoid fever, diptheria, and syphilis at the turn of the century. Ziporyn's observations are aided by a thorough, well-footnoted analysis of publications across 14 categories. Choice This study explores the depiction of medical science to the American public through the medium of popular magazines in the period 1870 to 1920. To understand the impact of medical advances as conveyed by the popular press, Ziporyn examines articles on diphtheria, typhoid fever, and syphilis in major popular magazines of the time. In search of the common underlying premises, she analyzes the very different depictions of these three diseases: diptheria was associated with children, typhoid fever with uncleanliness, and syphilis with immorality. Although generally conservative in announcing advances, medical popularizers nevertheless presented theory as absolute certainty. Perhaps in anticipation of reader desires, popular articles portrayed medical science as completely devoid of uncertainty of error.

Covering Muslims - American Newspapers in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover): Erik Bleich, Maurits Van der Veen Covering Muslims - American Newspapers in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover)
Erik Bleich, Maurits Van der Veen
R2,757 Discovery Miles 27 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An examination of how American newspaper articles on Muslims are strikingly negative by any measure. For decades, scholars and observers have criticized negative media portrayals of Muslims and Islam. Yet most of these critiques are limited by their focus on one specific location, a limited time period, or a single outlet. In Covering Muslims, Erik Bleich and A. Maurits van der Veen present the first systematic, large-scale analysis of American newspaper coverage of Muslims through comparisons across groups, time, countries, and topics. The authors demonstrate conclusively that coverage of Muslims is remarkably negative by any measure. They show that American newspapers have been consistently negative across the two-decade period between 1996 and 2016 and that articles on Muslims are more negative than those touching on groups as diverse as Catholics, Jews, Hindus, African Americans, Latinos, Mormons, or atheists. Strikingly, even articles about mundane topics tend to be negative. The authors suggest that media outlets both within and outside the United States may contribute to pervasive Islamophobia and they encourage readers and journalists to "tone check" the media rather than simply accepting negative associations with Muslims or other marginalized groups.

The Course of Tolerance - Freedom of the Press in Nineteenth-Century America (Hardcover, New): Donna L. Dickerson The Course of Tolerance - Freedom of the Press in Nineteenth-Century America (Hardcover, New)
Donna L. Dickerson
R2,784 Discovery Miles 27 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work examines the operation of the First Amendment, especially where it concerns freedom of the press, during the nineteenth century. It examines contemporary nineteenth century views on press freedom, placing them in the context of the issues that prompted and shaped them. Primary sources--pamphlets, speeches, sermons, letters, diaries, newspapers, and official documents--were used to highlight free press issues. It confirms that First Amendment rights were controversial issues for many nineteenth century Americans. The Course of Tolerance examines previously ignored issues such as the Postal Bill of 1836 and press freedom during the Reconstruction period in the South, making this the most comprehensive volume on its subject to date. Other topics included are libel, the War of 1812, abolitionism, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. Through treatment of these issues, the reader is introduced to a broad variety of the nineteenth century's writings, many of which have not been analyzed thoroughly in this century. Following the main body of the book is a selected bibliography and index. This volume will be of great interest to students of communications law, journalism history, and First Amendment theory and philosophy.

Women Political Leaders and the Media (Hardcover): D. Campus Women Political Leaders and the Media (Hardcover)
D. Campus
R1,858 Discovery Miles 18 580 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book looks at how media coverage reinforces gender stereotyping and influence the public evaluations of women leaders' candidacies and performance. Through the analysis of several examples and experiences illustrating specific issues, like the double bind; the trivialization effect and personal politics, readers will be introduced to the controversial yet familiar question of why there are so few women in power and why the glass ceiling seems still so difficult to break. The book also analyzes the consequences of recent developments in political communication for female leadership. Processes such as the popularization and the personalization of politics as well as the advent of the new media are changing the nature and the scope of leadership in contemporary democracies. The book discusses some of the implications of such a complex framework in terms of possible changes in the style of female political leadership.

Roots of Revolution - The Press and Social Change in Latin America (Hardcover): Jerry W. Knudson Roots of Revolution - The Press and Social Change in Latin America (Hardcover)
Jerry W. Knudson
R1,775 Discovery Miles 17 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Rebels of the South! It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees. -Inscription dated April 11, 1919, one day after the assassination of Emiliano Zapata, carved on a post at the Borda Garden in Cuernavaca, seen by Frank Tannenbaum in 1923. Peace by Revolution, An Interpretation of Mexico (New York, 1933), page179. Do not wear a shirt of eleven yards, for he who wants to be a Redeemer will be crucified. Guadalajara proverb, quoted in John Reed, Insurgent Mexico. 1914, page 78. Roots of Revolution focuses on the longstanding social and economic ills that caused society to disintegrate into violence during the classic social and economic Latin American revolutions of Mexico from 1910 to 1940, Bolivia since 1952, Cuba since 1959, and Nicaragua since 1979. Peaceful change eluded - temporarily at least - Chile, Argentina and Peru, and the future of Venezuela and other countries is undetermined. Considering the pervasive hunger and illiteracy in Latin America, as well as the inadequate or non-existent medical and educational systems, it is surprising to note that there have only been four classic revolutions with profound social and economic restructuring of society. Based upon the author's firsthand knowledge as a journalist focused on Latin America, this book is designed to give the latest information, historical or present, on such revolutions. The human element is emphasized, including that of the author, but these comments are clearly separated from the body of the work.
