Orly Buchbinder, Sebastian Kuntze
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book presents innovative approaches and state-of-the-art empirical studies on mathematics teacher learning. It highlights the advantages and challenges of such tools as classroom videos, concept cartoons, simulations, and scenarios. The book details how representations of practice encourage and afford professional development, and describes how these tools help to investigate aspects of teacher expertise, beliefs, and conceptions. In addition, the book identifies the methodological challenges that can emerge and the obstacles educators might encounter when using representations of practice. The book examines the nature of these challenges and provides suggestions for solving them. It offers a variety of different approaches that can help educators to develop professional learning activities for prospective and in-service teachers.

Learning Mathematics Successfully - Raising Self-Efficacy in Students, Teachers and Parents (Hardcover): Clark J. Hickman,... Learning Mathematics Successfully - Raising Self-Efficacy in Students, Teachers and Parents (Hardcover)
Clark J. Hickman, Helene J. Sherman
R2,530 Discovery Miles 25 300 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

The goal of this book is to bring together the concept of self-efficacy theory with practical how-to strategies for both teachers and parents to use in heightening their students' levels of self-efficacy. The book examines how self-efficacy theory relates to the acquisition of mathematical competence. The text also provides specific and practical how-to strategies for both teachers and parents in applying these principles to classroom mathematics instruction and activities. The self-efficacy practices and applications to mathematics are also suitable for families working with learners outside the school environment. Acquiring mathematical skills requires more than knowing arithmetic tables, memorizing rules, and knowing proofs. It requires a basic belief that one is capable of obtaining this information, making sense of it, and applying and generalizing it in mathematical problems. In addition, a student must believe that obtaining these skills leads to a positive outcome, whether it is perceived to be a good or passing grade, comfort-level in tackling mathematical problems, being able to advance to the next mathematics course, being able to score highly on the math section of the SAT and/or be competitive for a desired job. The ability of students to achieve and exceed grade level competence in mathematics is addressed through the lens of Albert Bandura's Self-Efficacy Theory. This theoretical position states that one will persist in mastering a behavior (in this case, mastering mathematical principles and skills), in the face of obstacles or failures-to the extent that one believes he or she has the ability to do so, and that there is a desired outcome for doing so. The research literature on the role of self-efficacy in mathematic instruction is examined to demonstrate the validity of using this concept to increase student (and parent/teacher) confidence in learning and applying grade-appropriate math content. Specific teaching methodologies will be provided that infuse self-efficacy strategies for students. Lastly, teachers and parents are provided strategies to increase their own self-efficacy when it comes to conveying mathematics principles to their child or student, as well as strategies to assess their students' level of self-efficacy over time. Teaching and learning mathematics so that students achieve success at their grade level or above can present a variety of challenges. One barrier that affects learners is the belief that one is not capable of learning mathematics or not naturally talented in the field, not a "math person." As a result, learners may not believe they are capable of a positive outcome for achieving mathematics success. This book is an important resource for pre-service and in-service teachers, as well as families in applying the theory of self-efficacy to support learners in becoming confident and assured in their ability to understand and apply mathematical principles and procedures. Coupled with classroom ready mathematics instructional strategies, the book provides readers with the background, tools and strategies needed to carry content success and confidence forward to remain persistent in solving all future mathematical problems.

This book shows how the practice of script writing can be used both as a pedagogical approach and as a research tool in mathematics education. It provides an opportunity for script-writers to articulate their mathematical arguments and/or their pedagogical approaches. It further provides researchers with a corpus of narratives that can be analyzed using a variety of theoretical perspectives.Various chapters argue for the use of dialogical method and highlight its benefits and special features. The chapters examine both "low tech" implementations as well as the use of a technological platform, LessonSketch. The chapters present results of and insights from several recent studies, which utilized scripting in mathematics education research and practice.

Using Mobile Technologies in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Nigel Calder, Kevin Larkin,... Using Mobile Technologies in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Nigel Calder, Kevin Larkin, Nathalie Sinclair
R4,049 Discovery Miles 40 490 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Mobile technologies influence the way that we interact with the world, the way that we live. We use them for communication, entertainment, information and research. In education settings, there has been substantial investment in mobile devices, often without a concomitant investment in developing pedagogy and practices. With mobile technologies evolving rapidly, and the number of educational apps growing, there is a need for research into how they facilitate mathematics learning. Such research is of particular importance regarding how such devices may be used to open up new ways of envisaging mathematics and mathematics education, and to help develop conceptual rather than procedural or declarative knowledge. This volume draws upon international research and reports on a range of research projects that have incorporated mobile technologies for mathematics education. It presents research on the use of mobile technologies, such as iPads, iPods, iPhones, Androids, and Tablets, across a diverse range of cultures, year levels and contexts. It examines the ways in which mobile technologies, including apps, might influence students' engagement, cognition, collaboration and attitudes, through the reshaping of the learning experience. In addition, the book presents appropriate ways to integrate mobile technologies into teaching and learning programmes. It is a significant reference book for those involved with teaching mathematics or using mobile technologies in education, while also offering insights and examples that are applicable to the use of digital technologies in education generally.

Eleonora Faggiano, Francesca Ferrara, Antonella Montone
R4,984 Discovery Miles 49 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses key issues of Technology and Innovation(s) in Mathematics Education, drawing on heterogeneous ways of positioning about innovation in mathematical practice with technology. The book offers ideas and meanings of innovation as they emerge from the entanglement of the various researchers with the mathematical practice, the teacher training program, the student learning and engagement, or the research method that they are telling stories about. The multiple theoretical or empirical perspectives capture a rich landscape, in which the presence of digital technology entails the emergence of new practices, techniques, environments and devices, or new ways of making sense of technology in research, teaching and learning.

Out-of-School-Time STEM Programs for Females, Volume 1 - Implications for Research and Practice: Longer-Term Programs... Out-of-School-Time STEM Programs for Females, Volume 1 - Implications for Research and Practice: Longer-Term Programs (Hardcover)
Lynda R. Wiest, Jafeth E. Sanchez, Heather Glynn Crawford?Ferre
R2,620 Discovery Miles 26 200 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines play a pivotal role in societal progress and economic prosperity, in addition to enhancing individual lives. However, U.S. students lack strong STEM performance in an international context. The pool of STEM?proficient workers is thus insufficient to fuel the nation, with females being one group that is noticeably absent. Out?of?school?time (OST) programs, which are on the rise, are increasingly suggested as a way to support and encourage females in STEM. Data collected from participants in OST programs have shown improved achievement, interest, and confidence in STEM, as well as greater awareness of STEM role models and careers. Out?of?School?Time STEM Programs for Females: Implications for Research and Practice features seven OST STEM programs for females from across the United States that run one week to one year in length. In this book, the chapter authors describe their programs, the effectiveness of those programs, and practical implications of their program evaluation data. This book is the first of its kind to offer researchers, educators, school administrators, policy makers, and others detailed insight into the promise and practice of out?of?school?time STEM programs for females.

The Theory of Objectification - A Vygotskian Perspective on Knowing and Becoming in Mathematics Teaching and Learning... The Theory of Objectification - A Vygotskian Perspective on Knowing and Becoming in Mathematics Teaching and Learning (Hardcover)
Luis Radford
R4,381 Discovery Miles 43 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Theory of Objectification: A Vygotskian Perspective on Knowing and Becoming in Mathematics Teaching and Learning presents a new educational theory in which learning is considered a cultural-historical collective process. The theory moves away from current conceptions of learning that focus on the construction or acquisition of conceptual contents. Its starting point is that schools do not produce only knowledge; they produce subjectivities too. As a result, learning is conceptualised as a process that is about knowing and becoming. Drawing on the work of Vygotsky and Freire, the theory of objectification offers a perspective to transform classrooms into sites of communal life where students make the experience of an ethics of solidarity, responsibility, plurality, and inclusivity. It posits the goal of education in general, and mathematics education in particular, as a political, societal, historical, and cultural endeavour aimed at the dialectical creation of reflexive and ethical subjects who critically position themselves in historically and culturally constituted mathematical discourses and practices, and who ponder new possibilities of action and thinking. The book is of special interest to educators in general and mathematics educators in particular, as well as to graduate and undergraduate students.

Note that the Floris Books editions of Jamie York's books have been completely revised for UK and European notation, language and metric systems. They are also suitable for use in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Experienced maths teacher and consultant Jamie York believes that a love of learning comes through the teacher, so his books are committed to supporting teachers in developing their classroom skills and to fostering a love of maths in their students. Unlike conventional maths textbooks, his books are not full of fancy graphics and contrived ways to make maths fun. Rather, they: -- focus on the essentials, so teachers aren't overwhelmed by endless lists of required materials -- are genuinely interesting and challenging, sparking students' enthusiasm for learning maths -- are developmentally appropriate to the age of the child, thereby encouraging inner mathemetical awareness and thinking -- favour depth over superficiality, to avoid teaching blind procedures to solve meaningless problems. This student's workbook for Class 6 contains practice questions, with room for working, on all the topics a student needs to cover in Steiner-Waldorf Class 6 (age 12-13). The book includes: Review topics from previous years: multiplication, short and long division, fractions, decimals, measurement, unit cost, factors, and estimating. New topics for Class 6: casting out nines, exponents (powers), square roots, divisibility, formulas, the imperial and metric systems, converting decimals to fractions, and fractions to decimals, angle measure, percents, mean/median/mode, pie charts, line graphs, area and perimeter, business maths (discount, profit, etc.,), ratios, rates (speed, wages), exchange rates and complex fractions. Mental maths: it is as important as ever for children to develop the ability to do calculations in their head. Each worksheet therefore begins with a secion on mental maths, focusing on one of our areas described in the Teacher's Source Book (available separately): multiplication, with selected facts from the 13 to 18 times tables and 25 times table; powers with base 2 to 5; fraction to decimal conversions; and maths tricks. Note that this workbook is also available in a pack of ten with a teacher's answer booklet.
