R2,918 Discovery Miles 29 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses how forward-thinking local communities are integrating pre-college STEM education, STEM pedagogy, industry clusters, college programs, and local, state and national policies to improve educational experiences, drive local development, gain competitive advantage for the communities, and lead students to rewarding careers. This book consists of three sections: foundational principles, city/regional case studies from across the globe, and state and national context. The authors explore the hypothesis that when pre-college STEM education is integrated with city and regional development, regions can drive a virtuous cycle of education, economic development, and quality of life. Why should pre-college STEM education be included in regional technology policy? When local leaders talk about regional policy, they usually talk about how government, universities and industry should work together. This relationship is important, but what about the hundreds of millions of pre-college students, taught by tens of millions of teachers, supported by hundreds of thousands of volunteers, who deliver STEM education around the world? Leaders in the communities featured in STEM in the Technopolis have recognized the need to prepare students at an early age, and the power of real-world connections in the process. The authors advocate for this approach to be expanded. They describe how STEM pedagogy, priority industry clusters, cross-sector collaboration, and the local incarnations of global development challenges can be made to work together for the good of all citizens in local communities. This book will be of interest to government policymakers, school administrators, industry executives, and non-profit executives. The book will be useful as a reference to teachers, professors, industry professional volunteers, non-profit staff, and program leaders who are developing, running, or teaching in STEM programs or working to improve quality of life in their communities.

Note that the Floris Books editions of Jamie York's books have been completely revised for UK and European notation, language and metric systems. They are also suitable for use in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Experienced maths teacher and consultant Jamie York believes that a love of learning comes through the teacher, so his books are committed to supporting teachers in developing their classroom skills and to fostering a love of maths in their students. Unlike conventional maths textbooks, his books are not full of fancy graphics and contrived ways to make maths fun. Rather, they: -- focus on the essentials, so teachers aren't overwhelmed by endless lists of required materials -- are genuinely interesting and challenging, sparking students' enthusiasm for learning maths -- are developmentally appropriate to the age of the child, thereby encouraging inner mathemetical awareness and thinking -- favour depth over superficiality, to avoid teaching blind procedures to solve meaningless problems. This student's workbook for Class 8 contains practice questions, with room for working, on all the topics a student needs to cover in Steiner-Waldorf Class 8 (age 14-15). The book includes number bases, Pythagorean theorem, mensuration, percents and growth, and proportions and dimensional analysis. Note that this workbook is also available in a pack of ten with a teacher's answer booklet.

Mellony Graven, Hamsa Venkat
R2,884 Discovery Miles 28 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on how to improve the teaching and learning of primary level mathematics education within resource-constrained contexts. It builds on two large numeracy projects within South Africa which speak to broader, global concerns and highlight how research and development not only enables one to meet ethical imperatives but also explore how further interventions can be developed. Teacher and research communities must work together to create mutually beneficial relationships and establish a cohesive understanding of the requirements of primary mathematics education.

The Foundations of Mathematics (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Ian Stewart, David Tall The Foundations of Mathematics (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Ian Stewart, David Tall
R2,520 Discovery Miles 25 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The transition from school mathematics to university mathematics is seldom straightforward. Students are faced with a disconnect between the algorithmic and informal attitude to mathematics at school, versus a new emphasis on proof, based on logic, and a more abstract development of general concepts, based on set theory. The authors have many years' experience of the potential difficulties involved, through teaching first-year undergraduates and researching the ways in which students and mathematicians think. The book explains the motivation behind abstract foundational material based on students' experiences of school mathematics, and explicitly suggests ways students can make sense of formal ideas. This second edition takes a significant step forward by not only making the transition from intuitive to formal methods, but also by reversing the process- using structure theorems to prove that formal systems have visual and symbolic interpretations that enhance mathematical thinking. This is exemplified by a new chapter on the theory of groups. While the first edition extended counting to infinite cardinal numbers, the second also extends the real numbers rigorously to larger ordered fields. This links intuitive ideas in calculus to the formal epsilon-delta methods of analysis. The approach here is not the conventional one of 'nonstandard analysis', but a simpler, graphically based treatment which makes the notion of an infinitesimal natural and straightforward. This allows a further vision of the wider world of mathematical thinking in which formal definitions and proof lead to amazing new ways of defining, proving, visualising and symbolising mathematics beyond previous expectations.

Yeping Li, Edward A. Silver, Shiqi Li
R4,964 Discovery Miles 49 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book surveys and examines different approaches and practices that contribute to the changes in mathematics instruction, including (1) innovative approaches that bring direct changes in classroom instructional practices, (2) curriculum reforms that introduce changes in content and requirements in classroom instruction, and (3) approaches in mathematics teacher education that aim to improve teachers expertise and practices. It also surveys relevant theory and methodology development in studying and assessing mathematics instruction.

Classroom instruction is commonly seen as one of the key factors contributing to students learning of mathematics, but much remains to be understood about teachers instructional practices that lead to the development and enactment of effective classroom instruction, and approaches and practices developed and used to transform classroom instruction in different education systems.

Transforming Mathematics Instruction is organized to help readers learn not only from reading individual chapters, but also from reading across chapters and sections to explore broader themes, including:

- Identifying what is important in mathematics for teaching and learning emphasized in different approaches;

- Exploring how students learning is considered and facilitated through different approaches and practices;

- Understanding the nature of various approaches that are valued in different systems and cultural contexts;

- Probing culturally valued approaches in identifying and evaluating effective instructional practices.

The book brings new research and insights into multiple approaches and practices for transforming mathematics instruction to the international community of mathematics education, with 25 chapters and four section prefaces contributed by 56 scholars from 10 different education systems. This rich collection is indispensable reading for mathematics educators, researchers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, and graduate students interested in learning about different instructional practices, approaches for instructional transformation, and research in different education systems.

It will help readers to reflect on approaches and practices that are useful for instructional changes in their own education systems, and also inspire them to identify and further explore new areas of research and program development in improving mathematics teaching and learning.

Maria Teresa Tatto, Michael C. Rodriguez, Mark D. Reckase, Wendy M. Smith, Kiril Bankov, …
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book reports on an innovative study into the first five years of mathematics teaching: FIRSTMATH. For the first time, the study has developed a viable methodology to analyze the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of beginning mathematics teachers as well as instruments to explore the contexts where they work. The book provides a step by step account of this exploratory (proof-of-concept) research study, using a comparative and international approach, and introduces readers to the challenges entailed. The FIRSTMATH study promises the development of methods and strategies to make it possible for teacher educators and future teachers to examine (and improve on) their own practices in an important STEM area.
