The spectrum of systemic rheumatologic disease (often termed
connective tissue disease) is characterized by autoimmune-mediated
organ dysfunction and the lungs are a frequent target. There are
numerous pulmonary manifestations--with varied incidence and
prevalence--associated with connective tissue diseases and all
patients with rheumatologic disease are at risk of developing
associated lung disease. It is not known why specific connective
tissue diseases are more likely to be associated with certain types
of lung disease and there is still much to learn about the natural
history of this connection. Largely due to the interplay concerning
the diverse nature of the connective tissue diseases and the
frequently heterogeneous forms of lung involvement encountered, the
arena of rheumatologic lung disease poses major challenges to
practicing clinicians. Moreover, the assessment and management of
rheumatologic lung disease requires a multi-disciplinary approach
and is optimized by active engagement by rheumatologists working
closely with pulmonologists and other specialists.Pulmonary
Manifestations of Rheumatic Disease offers a practical and
comprehensive overview of lung disease encountered in patients with
systemic rheumatic diseases. The book helps practicing clinicians
in the ongoing assessment, management, and understanding of
rheumatologic lung disease. While providing chapters on the science
and pathophysiology underlying rheumatologic lung diseases, the
text has a case-based approach and is more significantly weighted
towards the clinical aspects and implications of the diseases. The
first text of its kind specifically dedicated to describe diverse,
commonplace, and challenging aspects of rheumatologic lung
diseases, Pulmonary Manifestations of Rheumatic Disease serves as
an invaluable tool for the practicing clinician.
Biomaterials are used in many areas of medicine, particularly in
surgery and d- tistry. In orthopedic surgery, total hip
arthroplasty has been extremely successful, and has been called
'the operation of the 20th century'. Total hip arthroplasty is r-
tinely performed every day in most orthopedic departments. Over the
last decades, many efforts have been made to better integrate the
components within the recipient bones, to decrease the friction at
the prosthetic interface, and to minimize wear. Minimally invasive
procedures have been developed, and various designs are inte- ed to
preserve as much as possible of the bone stock of young patients.
By contrast, the clinical results have been less favorable after
various hand and wrist joint replacements. Many early designs have
failed, the clinical data of the current pr- theses are frequently
quite limited, and there is often insufficient biomechanical
information available, although trapezio-metacarpal arthroplasty in
particular has become quite popular in recent years. In order to
promote progress in hand and wrist arthroplasty, Antonio Merolli
and Thomas J. Joyce have edited this lovely book, whose chapters
discuss current research and recent advances in hand and wrist
arthroplasty. The problems of metacarpophalangeal joint prostheses
are particularly developed.
Myasthenia Gravis is a neuromuscular disease, caused by an
auto-immune process interfering with the acetylcholine receptors at
the postsynaptic membrane of the muscle. This book provides
guidance on diagnosing the disease, as early diagnosis is important
for the application of therapy.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a major cause of disability affecting
about 1% of the population. Although much effort has been expended
on research into the causes and cures of RA, little progress has
been made. The focus of treatment in RA is on reducing the
disabling consequences of the disease and controlling the symptoms.
Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis examines the nature of RA and
its symptoms of pain and stiffness. The role of health care
professionals and the individual's encounters with the doctor are
important to understand as these experiences influence the
individual's behaviour and understanding of their RA.
This book will be an invaluable aid to the considerable number of
people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, their families, carers
and all health professionals involved in its treatment.

Case Studies in Systemic Sclerosis deals specifically with Systemic
Sclerosis in a case study format. Each case presentation includes
illustrative figures, a discussion of the pathophysiology relevant
to the case, a discussion of management that is both evidence-based
and expert opinion-based and several key references for further
reading. With its easy-to-use format, this book presents multiple
different manifestations of Systemic Sclerosis to a wide range of
readers. Because this disease has a broad range of systemic
features, Case Studies in Systemic Sclerosis is a valuable
reference tool not only to the community of rheumatologists
(trainees, academic and private practice rheumatologists) and
dermatologists, but also potentially to internists,
gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists and
nephrologists.
Leading clinicians and clinical researchers discuss in practical
detail the newest treatments used in rheumatic diseases,
emphasizing-without neglecting current standard treatments-those
experimental therapies now undergoing clinical trials and poised
for early introduction into the rheumatology armamentarium. The
diseases and therapeutic regimes examined here range from
rheumatoid arthritis and its treatment by gene therapy, to
osteoarthritis and systemic autoimune diseases. Each chapter is
organized so that the busy clinician can quickly obtain all the
information needed optimal patient treatment. This includes an
analysis of the pathogenic mechanisms that explain the molecular
basis of the newer therapeutics, reviews of animal data and the
results of clinical trials, and recommendations concerning use,
side effects, and precautions.
The Rheumatology Handbook is a unique resource for medical students
and non-specialist doctors. It represents a collaborative eff=ort
between specialists from major teaching hospitals with in the UK
and Ireland, with each chapter being edited by a diffeerent
consultant reheumatologist with the relevant subspecialty interest.
Writtenh clearly and concisely and will illustrated, the book
provides readers with the basic scientific information that they
require to understand current concepts about the pathogenesis of
rehumatological diseases, and draws on recent reserach studies to
give up-to-date information about investigation and treatment. It
covers the full range of rheumatological conditions, from local
degenerative problems to systemic immune-mediated disease. It
includes a useful section on soft-tissue disorders and a practical
guide to prerfoming soft-tissue and joint injections: at the other
end of the clinical spectrum, the rationale for and efficacy of
novel treatments targeted at individual components of the immune
response are well explained.
Physicians caring for children with rheumatic disease need a
varied and highly developed set of clinical skills, including
general pediatrics, immunology, musculoskeletal medicine and the
management of chronic diseases.
With these requirements in mind, the authors of this concise
handbook emphasize the most frequently recognized symptom complexes
in children. Their initial focus is on musculokeletal diseases that
may have multi-organ involvement. They then discuss systemic lupus
erythematosis, vasculitis, scleroderma and other auto-inflammatory
diseases. Concise text is supported by a wealth of photos and
tables.
The book is of use to all young doctors/residents in pediatrics,
rheumatology and general medicine, to primary care physicians, and

While an emphasis on the new is vital to any science, the relevance
or importance of new discoveries cannot truly be appreciated
without a strong sense of the framework of a discipline, and of the
ideas that helped to shape it. With this in mind, the editors of
this book have attempted to create a canon of texts that formed the
basis of rheumatology. Experts on the diagnosis and management of
the various rheumatological conditions have chosen what they
consider to be the key papers in their respective domains. Every
paper is carefully described and evaluated by its strengths, its
weaknesses, and its contribution to the field. Papers have been
chosen that define new diseases or treatments, that have changed
our whole way of thinking, or that have simply stood the test of
time. The editors hope that the papers profiled in this volume will
stimulate debate, encourage readers to seek out the original texts,
and inspire the writers of the classics of the 21st century.

This book will address the growing roles of epigenetics in disease
pathogenesis, and review the contribution of epigenetic
modifications to disease onset and progression. The roles that
epigenetics plays in facilitating effects of the environment on
allergy and immunologic diseases will be reviewed. The book is
divided into three parts - the first is an introduction to
epigenetics and the methods that have been developed to study
epigenetics, the second addresses epigenetics in allergic diseases
and the third part will cover epigenetics in autoimmune diseases.
With the rapid expansion of knowledge of how genes are regulated
and how this regulation affects disease phenotypes, this book will
be attractive to experienced researchers as well as those just
launching an epigenetics research program. It will also be of
interest to allergist, immunologists, rheumatologists and
dermatologist who are engaged in clinical practice as a resource
for understanding the basis for personalized and precision
medicine. For example, the role that epigenetics plays in the
pathogenesis in various allergic and autoimmune disorders and how
this determines disease phenotypes will be covered extensively in
this book. This book will thus help fill the gap in available
resources on epigenetics in allergy and autoimmune diseases.
This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the
basic and clinical aspects of infections and infectious processes
that trigger or aggravate a variety of autoimmune and inflammatory
musculoskeletal disorders. It delivers a timely update on the
interactions between infection and rheumatic diseases in order to
provide clinicians with the tools they need for proper diagnosis
and treatment. The book is divided into five main sections. The
first examines the basic aspects of bacterial infections with a
discussion of molecular biology, the microbiome, various types of
bacteria that cause infection, and recent advances in biologic
therapy. The next section focuses on different forms of viral
arthritis including hepatitis arthritis, arthritis associated with
alpha viruses, and parvovirus-related arthritis. Subsequent
chapters then discuss arthritis caused by mycobacteria, fungi,
spirochete, and other miscellaneous arthritides. Following this are
various analyzations on reactive arthritis and infection-related
rheumatic diseases such as Whipple's Disease, SAPHO Syndrome,
rheumatic fever, and HIV-associated rheumatic manifestations.
Finally, the book closes with three chapters on external impacts on
infectious diseases such as climate change, vaccinations and
systemic lupus erythematosus. Infections and the Rheumatic Diseases
is an essential resource for physicians and related professionals,
residents, fellows, graduate students, and nurses in rheumatology,
clinical immunology, and internal medicine.
