Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures (Paperback, 9th ed.): Louis Solomon Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures (Paperback, 9th ed.)
Louis Solomon
R927 Discovery Miles 9 270 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

Since the publication of the first edition in 1959, Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures has been an essential textbook for those seeking to understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, its diseases and its response to trauma. The book's success was initiated by the late Alan Apley's skills as a teacher, and the care and forethought that he brought to the presentation of the content.
The current authors have developed and extended this foundation to produce a thoroughly modern textbook of orthopaedic surgery, bringing complementary expertise while retaining the book's characteristic philosophy and approach. They are joined by a selection of expert contributors from around the world, who add material on a wide variety of subjects including radiology, open fractures, neuromuscular disorders, and inflammatory arthropathies.
This 9th edition echoes its predecessors in following Apley's approach to the orthopaedic patient. As before, the work is divided ino three section: General Orthopaedics, Regional Orthopaedics, and Fractures and Joint Injuries. The material has been fully updated and revised, including the replacement of the majority of the photographs, giving this edition a modern and relevant feel. The illustrations are all provided in a downloadable form on the book's accompanying website.
Apley's System's wide readership of practicing orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduate trainees and residents in orthopaedics and general surgery, A&E specialists and physiotherapists is evidence of the author's ability to instruct and inspire. The book is a trully fitting introduction to modern-day orthopaedics.

Antiphospholipid Syndrome - Current Research Highlights and Clinical Insights (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st... Antiphospholipid Syndrome - Current Research Highlights and Clinical Insights (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Doruk Erkan, Michael D. Lockshin
R2,679 Discovery Miles 26 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This new edition is a comprehensive and updated resource on antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), which is an autoimmune disorder. In APS, the body recognizes certain normal components of blood and/or cell membranes as foreign substances and produces antibodies (antiphospholipid antibodies) against them. APS is associated with recurrent clotting events (thrombosis) including premature stroke, repeated miscarriages, phlebitis, venous thrombosis, and pulmonary thromboembolism. It is also associated with low platelet or blood elements that prevent bleeding. Recently, however, even more disease states have been linked with APS, including premature heart attack, various cardiac valvular abnormalities, skin lesions, kidney disease, abnormal involuntary movement/chorea, diseases that mimic multiple sclerosis, and vascular diseases of the eye that can lead to visual loss and blindness. The International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies, held every 3 years, is the venue where representatives from different disciplines gather to discuss the recent advances in APS. The conference intends to cover basic aspects of APS, such as pathogenesis, origins, genetics, intracellular and molecular events, the role of infections, as well as traditional and non-traditional clinical manifestations associated with antiphospholipid antibodies. The 15th Congress took place in September 2016. A novel aspect of the Congress was that multiple teams, chaired by Scientific Planning Committee members, used evidence-based literature reviews and expert discussions to answer specific pre-defined APS-related questions. These teams included points of view from experts in rheumatology, hematology, cardiovascular medicine, obstetrics, neurology, and immunology. The Scientific Planning Committee members also chaired the congress sessions and supervised completion of the reports that are the bases of the chapters of this book. In addition, there are two chapters included specifically written for APS patients. Much like the previous volume, dedicated to the 13th International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies (April 2010), this up-to-date and comprehensive work gathers invaluable insights from a multidisciplinary team of world-renowned experts and represents the authoritative resource on causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of APS.

Hiromi Kubagawa, Peter D. Burrows
R4,075 Discovery Miles 40 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume reviews the current state of research on the IgM antibody and its multiple receptors and binding proteins. Interactions of the IgM ligands with these molecules are important for protection against infections as a first line of defense, as well as for regulation of immune responses to pathogens and self-antigens. The book includes up-to-date information on: (i) the phylogeny of three IgM-binding receptors [polymeric Ig receptor (pIgR), Fc receptor for both IgA and IgM (Fc /R), and Fc receptor for IgM only (FcR)]; (ii) the lymphocyte-restricted distribution and unique ligand-binding activity of FcR; (iii) the definition and potential function of Fc receptor-like molecule A (FCRLA) as a resident endoplasmic reticulum protein that binds IgM, but also IgG and IgA; (iv) IgM antibody-mediated enhancement of humoral immune responses, highlighting the importance of complement and its receptors, (v) the numerous important roles of IgM natural antibodies in regulation of inflammation. It is an invaluable resource for researchers and clinicians alike.

Ankylosing Spondylitis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): J. Calabro, G. Dick Ankylosing Spondylitis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
J. Calabro, G. Dick
R1,219 Discovery Miles 12 190 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Ankylosing spondylitis, the third most common form of chronic arthritis, is a systemic rheumatic disorder characterized by inflam mation of the axial skeleton (spine and sacroiliac joints), and a host of systemic manifestations. With comprehensive care, the vast majority of patients can lead full, productive lives. However, management can succeed only with patient education and exercise. Recent communication from my co-editor, Carson Dick, serves to remind me that there are several unresolved issues concerning drug therapy in ankylosing spondylitis. Clearly, in spite of my views, there are others who do not believe that the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alter favorably the course of disease and they must be administered for prolonged periods and in anti-inflammatry quan tities to be effective. I would agree with Carson Dick that aspirin and phenylbutazone are way down the list of drug priorities following the marketing of other NSAIDs that are effective and safer. I am grateful to my contributors to this volume, all recognized authorities on their particular topic. It has been a privilege col laborating with them on this particular volume. ABOUT THE EDITOR John J. Calabro, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Director of Rheumatology at Saint Vincent Hospital, both in Worcester, Mas sachusetts, USA. He is the author of over 260 scientific articles, including several monographs and a book on arthritis for patients."

Low back pain - Some real answers (Paperback, Illustrated Ed): Brian Sweetman Low back pain - Some real answers (Paperback, Illustrated Ed)
Brian Sweetman
R702 R661 Discovery Miles 6 610 Save R41 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Back pain is the commonest form of rheumatism and it is estimated to affect between 65% and 80% of populations sampled. The costs of back pain-related medical care and disability compensation make it one of society's most significant non-lethal medical conditions. Whilst mortality is low, its morbidity is high, inconvenience great, and economic burden massive. The actual symptom of back pain is one of the commonest and most perplexing encountered in medical practice. A proper understanding of what it means is crucial for further medical advance. However, the field of back pain research probably has more experts than any other. Anybody who has back pain will, as often as not, expound views on all matters concerning causation and expectations. Indeed, it is not for a lack of ideas that this field of investigation has failed to make progress. A respected senior investigator advised me early on that patients could not even tell which side their pain was on. It was only many years later that I discovered why. Though the initial incident or accident would seem important to the patient and to the researcher, it is remarkable how little it helps distinguish patterns of back pain. Tests of inappropriate behaviour in the past have been widely disseminated and yet even the originators have said that they cannot be sure of the implications of positive non-organic test findings. This book will show that these 'indicators' are not what they seem to be. In many cases, it is difficult to tell which level in the lumbar spine the pain comes from, and thus treatments such as injections or operation, may be given at the wrong level, let alone the wrong side. Though the various forms of back pain treatment seem to help some patients, when these same treatments are subjected to randomised controlled trials, the evidence for efficacy seems to all but vanish. With all these difficulties and uncertainties, it can be seen why low back pain presents one of the most fallible fields of healthcare. This book indicates that there are ways of dealing with the majority of these problems. Many of the answers from the research conducted were most unexpected. The reader is also advised that the scientific approach cannot deliver hard and fast answers to all contemporary questions in such a wide field and much has depended on the choice of problems to study. Whilst the tests used to distinguish the patterns in this study have their limitations, and whilst there is, as yet, only limited evidence as to the underlying pathology for the patterns recognised, it is felt that some of the other patterns identified are descriptive of diagnoses that are generally accepted. If the answers that are put forward appear to change the direction of understanding, it is hoped that you, the reader, will be able to carry the enquiry further when you see patients, advise treatment or even experience back pain yourself!

Alessandro Plebani, Vassilios Lougaris
R3,407 Discovery Miles 34 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides an updated overview of agammaglobulinemia, a rare form of primary immunodeficiency which is considered the prototype of the congenital humoral defects, and which is characterized by the absence of peripheral B cells and very low serum immunoglobulin levels. The book opens by discussing the highly orchestrated early B cell development in the bone marrow and the genes involved based on both human and animal models. The pathogenesis and clinical presentation of X-linked agammaglobulinemia, caused by mutations in the BTK (Bruton's tyrosine kinase) gene, are then presented in detail, followed by descriptions of the clinical manifestations and molecular basis of the less frequent autosomal recessive and autosomal dominant forms of agammaglobulinemia. Patients' management in terms of respiratory complications, gammaglobulin replacement therapy and the potential value of novel experimental therapeutic strategies are discussed. The book's closing chapters offer a comprehensive and updated description of mutations in the BTK gene, and the expression and function of BTK in cells other than B cells.

Pediatric Tricky Topics, Volume 1: A Practically Painless Review includes review items in pediatric orthopedics, trauma, environmental medicine, toxicology, rheumatology, and neurology topics, among others. The Q&A format allows for self-testing or study with a partner or a group and is practical and accessible enough to dip into during a few minutes of downtime at the hospital or office, and as such it is suitable for those studying for the pediatric board exam, practicing physicians brushing up their skills, and any busy clinician who wants to learn more about these topics while on the go.
