Tourism Demand Modelling and Forecasting - Modern Econometric Approaches (Hardcover): Haiyan Song, S. F. Witt Tourism Demand Modelling and Forecasting - Modern Econometric Approaches (Hardcover)
Haiyan Song, S. F. Witt
R4,492 Discovery Miles 44 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The phenomenal growth of both the world-wide tourism industry and academic interest in tourism over the last thirty years has generated great interest in tourism demand modelling and forecasting from both sectors. However, the tendency for researchers and practitioners engaged in quantitative causal tourism modelling and forecasting to run many regression equations and try to choose the 'best' model based on various parametric and non-parametric criteria has been widely criticised as failing to provide credible results. The aim of this book is to present the recent advances in econometric modelling methodology within the context of tourism demand analysis at a level that is accessible to non-specialists, and to illustrate these new developments with actual tourism applications.
The book begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of tourism demand analysis, before addressing the problems of traditional tourism demand modelling and forecasting, i.e. data mining and spurious regression due to common trends in the time series. Three chapters explore the general-to-specific approach to tourism demand modelling and forecasting, including the use of autoregressive distributed lag processes, cointegration analysis and error correction models. The time varying parameter model together with the use of the Kalman filter as an estimation method is a useful tool for examining the effects of regime shifts on tourism demand elasticities: this is explored next. The panel data approach is introduced as a way of overcoming the problem of estimation and forecasting biases caused by insufficient time series data. The book concludes by evaluating the empirical forecasting performance of the variousmodels and putting forward some general conclusions.

Tourism Management - Towards the New Millennium (Hardcover): C Ryan, S. Page Tourism Management - Towards the New Millennium (Hardcover)
C Ryan, S. Page
R2,527 Discovery Miles 25 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an edited selection of key research papers published in the field of tourism management during the past ten years. It seeks to take stock of some of the seminal developments in the literature and to examine the evolution of thinking and the development of the subject area, particularly in the emergence of research sub-areas.
The book is organized into a series of parts which reflect the development of new and established areas of research: decision-making and tourist behaviour, tourism demand forecasting, gender and sex in tourism, planning and communities, urban tourism, theme parks, sustainable tourism or eco-tourism, marketing and service quality, and tourism as it affects indigenous peoples. Each part is introduced by commentary that relates the articles to the wider literature and the current progress of knowledge in each area. Underlying the books is a view that only through a continuing dialogue between specific tourism journal articles and a wider social science literature can one consider the 'cutting edge' nature of tourism research and manner in which it is then developed and disseminated. This book is one way of allowing readers to assess the merits of each article and its wider contribution to the tourism literature.

Tourism Branding - Communities in Action (Hardcover, New): Liping Cai, William C. Gartner, Ana Maria Munar Tourism Branding - Communities in Action (Hardcover, New)
Liping Cai, William C. Gartner, Ana Maria Munar; Series edited by Liping Cai
R3,317 Discovery Miles 33 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Academic studies have predominantly treated destination branding as a marketing phenomenon that happens to involve tourists as customers in a marketplace. "Tourism Branding: Communities in Action", the first volume in a new and exciting book series, considers a traditional marketing subject from multidisciplinary perspectives. Refreshingly this book attempts to free branding research and practice in tourism fields from the shackles of marketing that are dominated by the conventional approach of product, price, place, and promotion. Considering tourism branding as a community affair, this collection is distinguished from other publications by adopting a global and more multidisciplinary approach, and brings the subject of tourism branding outside of the conventional domains of marketing and destination. Special attention is given to the role and expectations of main tourism stakeholders, particularly residents, business, and government in the hosting community. Built on theoretical foundations with both empirical findings and practical cases, this book brings together different perspectives and offers an intellectual and open dialogue among academics and practitioners of the field.

Tourism Reassessed: Blight or Blessing - Blight or Blessing? (Paperback, New edition): Frances Brown Tourism Reassessed: Blight or Blessing - Blight or Blessing? (Paperback, New edition)
Frances Brown
R1,428 Discovery Miles 14 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tourism Reassessed: Blight or blessing? provides a balanced assessment of the effects of tourism on 20th century life and evaluates its significance in international relations. Inspired by Sir George Young's book, Tourism: Blessing or blight?, published 25 years ago, this book places tourism firmly within its wider context. Tourism Reassessed sees tourism as: * A factor of international relations * A facet of the global economic order It takes a new approach by examining the place of tourism in the global political economy, analysing both how far it is shaped by the political-economic system and its own role in shaping that system. Tourism Reassessed is ideal for educators and researchers in tourism and all those studying or interested in the subject. Policy makers in governments and international and national organizations in tourism and related fields will find this essential reading.

Unravelling the Rag Trade - Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Seven World Cities (Hardcover): Jan Rath Unravelling the Rag Trade - Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Seven World Cities (Hardcover)
Jan Rath
R4,311 Discovery Miles 43 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The garment industry is one of the world's largest industries, yet there are few sustained examinations of its importance to the global economy and the very vital role that immigrant entrepreneurship has played. Focusing on the garment industry in seven world cities Paris, London, Birmingham, Amsterdam, New York, Miami and Los Angeles this book tackles the complex relationship between the development of immigrant entrepreneurship and the shift to global, post-industrial urban economies. The interconnections among immigrant entrepreneurs, social networks, market conditions and regulatory matters are thoroughly explored in a comparative way. Starting from the idea that general social, economic and political processes manifest themselves in ever changing, historically specific shapes, the contributors offer intriguing insights into the dynamics of entrepreneurial management against the backdrop of such processes as: the differential spatial impact of economic restructuring; the significance of governance at various levels; and the conditional use of social capital. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this is a must for those wishing to supplement their knowledge in globalization, labour, economics, immigration and the garment industry broadly speaking.

Financial Innovations and Monetary Reform - How to Get Out of the Debt Trap (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Jean-François Serval,... Financial Innovations and Monetary Reform - How to Get Out of the Debt Trap (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Jean-François Serval, Jean-Pascal Tranié
R1,891 Discovery Miles 18 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written by two leading experts on multinational accounting and billion-dollar international investment funds, this book provides a framework for a global reform of the world monetary system, and defines a decidedly new approach to dealing with public debt mortgage, an issue that we can see in many countries in Europe and around the world. The authors put forward a proposal for transforming sterile financial masses, which are withdrawn from the real economy as they no longer bear interest, into wealth. To facilitate this return to the real economy, the authors propose that a significant share of public debt be converted into net equities in the world of business and goods production in order to find new profitable investment projects. The idea is bold, and the authors strive to demonstrate its technical feasibility. They are convinced that this approach can accompany and enhance a movement that has already begun, namely the implementation of vast national and international investment programs in major infrastructures and research projects in innovative sectors. This work builds on the authors’ two previous books, which focus on the monetary system. The first, published in 2010 and including a foreword by former French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, analyzes the new virtual dimension of money. The second, published in 2014, puts forward an innovative proposal for a new financial regulation aimed at more stable economies. This third book is intended for professionals in the financial industry, including decision makers at banks, accounting and private equity firms, as well as policymakers at central banks and government institutions involved in the implementation of financial and monetary reforms.

Actionable Intelligence in Healthcare (Paperback): Jay Liebowitz, Amanda Dawson Actionable Intelligence in Healthcare (Paperback)
Jay Liebowitz, Amanda Dawson
R1,448 Discovery Miles 14 480 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book shows healthcare professionals how to turn data points into meaningful knowledge upon which they can take effective action. Actionable intelligence can take many forms, from informing health policymakers on effective strategies for the population to providing direct and predictive insights on patients to healthcare providers so they can achieve positive outcomes. It can assist those performing clinical research where relevant statistical methods are applied to both identify the efficacy of treatments and improve clinical trial design. It also benefits healthcare data standards groups through which pertinent data governance policies are implemented to ensure quality data are obtained, measured, and evaluated for the benefit of all involved. Although the obvious constant thread among all of these important healthcare use cases of actionable intelligence is the data at hand, such data in and of itself merely represents one element of the full structure of healthcare data analytics. This book examines the structure for turning data into actionable knowledge and discusses: The importance of establishing research questions Data collection policies and data governance Principle-centered data analytics to transform data into information Understanding the "why" of classified causes and effects Narratives and visualizations to inform all interested parties Actionable Intelligence in Healthcare is an important examination of how proper healthcare-related questions should be formulated, how relevant data must be transformed to associated information, and how the processing of information relates to knowledge. It indicates to clinicians and researchers why this relative knowledge is meaningful and how best to apply such newfound understanding for the betterment of all.

Ruth Wandhoefer, Hazem Danny Nakib
R1,951 Discovery Miles 19 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the evolving digitisation of the financial ecosystem and the associated impacts of digital technologies on the financial industry at large. Particular attention is given to the emergence of new technologies such as blockchain, smart contracts and AI, as well as the regulatory regime surrounding money, payments and data. The book explores the future of the financial sector as a Digital Financial Ecosystem, a term that encompasses an interconnected data-driven digital and partially decentralised financial sector and that includes many aspects of an individual's or organisation's life, ranging from marketplaces and utilities to payments and identity. We begin by providing an overview of key concepts to then develop a high-level framework and approach to what we call Redecentralisation. As next step, we delve into key technology areas that practitioners need to be aware of and that are changing the landscape of the financial system. Following on from that backdrop we explore the areas of money and payments that are at a turning point with the replacement of key infrastructural components necessary for the future of the Digital Financial Ecosystem. We then discuss the topics of digital identity and data privacy that are being revamped in an increasingly digitising world. Bringing it all together, we look to the future to consider some of the latest trends and 'what if' scenarios for what the future may hold for a new Digital Financial Ecosystem through a more practical approach towards applying the analysis of the previous chapters. It showcases examples of decentralisation that we are observing in the emerging future Digital Financial Ecosystem and forms recommendations on where the journey ideally should be going for practitioners, regulators, students, and researchers, including the open question of a digital social contract to support our digital lives.
