Sex in Tourism - Exploring the Light and the Dark (Paperback): Neil Carr, Liza Berdychevsky Sex in Tourism - Exploring the Light and the Dark (Paperback)
Neil Carr, Liza Berdychevsky
R1,167 Discovery Miles 11 670 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book encompasses the diversity and complexity of sex in tourism, incorporating the light, dark and shades of grey in between. It brings together work and ideas from a diverse array of researchers from around the world and examines the affects and effects of diverse sexual encounters in tourism, romance tourism, sex tourism and sexual exploitation in tourism - including the sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism, and sexual harassment. Sex in tourism has arguably been an understudied area of research relative to the central roles that sex plays within tourism experiences. This volume explores the complexity and nuanced nature of sex in tourism in more detail. It will be of interest to students and researchers of tourism impacts, tourist behaviour, hospitality management, destination management and development.

Pier A. Abetti, Jose O. Maldifassi
R2,932 Discovery Miles 29 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book develops a model for analyzing the relationships of the defense industry with the productive infrastructure, the political constraints, and the technological capabilities of a semi-industrialized country. This model is used as the base for the analysis of the defense industries of semi-industrialized Latin-American countries that have shown a proven capacity to produce and export indigenous defense equipment: Argentina, Brazil and Chile. The defense industries of these three countries are described and analyzed in depth, with the objective of determining the reasons for their varying performance and of assessing the effects, positive or negative, on their respective national economies.

R973 Discovery Miles 9 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The EU Services Directive: Law or Simply Policy? (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Maria Wiberg The EU Services Directive: Law or Simply Policy? (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Maria Wiberg
R4,299 R3,717 Discovery Miles 37 170 Save R582 (14%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The EU Services Directive is difficult to achieve without also affecting issues of national social policy, closely related to the welfare state. The EU Services Directive's characteristics have raised numerous legal questions essential for its full understanding and implementation. It has become a "moving target" for the national administrations. In this book important issues are covered: is the EU Services Directive to be interpreted as law or simply policy and what are its actual effects on the regulatory autonomy of the Member States? Does it represent a new and innovative instrument which facilitates prosperous integration within the EU or, has the EU legislator gone beyond its regulatory competence? This book helps to understand the EU Services Directive and its effects on the regulatory autonomy of the Member States of the European Union in a broader perspective. It is valuable for academics, practitioners and officials both nationally as well within the EU institutions.

Bouncers - Violence and Governance in the Night-time Economy (Hardcover, New): Dick Hobbs, Philip Hadfield, Stuart Lister,... Bouncers - Violence and Governance in the Night-time Economy (Hardcover, New)
Dick Hobbs, Philip Hadfield, Stuart Lister, Simon Winlow
R1,852 Discovery Miles 18 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is the first attempt to understand Britain's night-time economy, the violence that pervades it, and the bouncers whose job it is to prevent it. Walk down any high street after dark and the shadows of bouncers will loom large, for they are the most visible form of control available in the youth-orientated zones of our cities after dark. Britain's rapidly expanding night-life is one of the country's most vibrant economic spheres, but it has created huge problems of violence and disorder. Using ethnography, participant observation, and extensive interviews with all the main players, this controversial book charts the emergence of the bouncer as one of the most graphic symbols in the iconography of post industrial Britain.

"New York Times" Bestseller,

With a New Afterword
"Schlosser has a flair for dazzling scene-setting and an arsenal of startling facts . . . "Fast Food Nation" points the way but, to resurrect an old fast food slogan, the choice is yours."--"Los Angeles Times"
In 2001, "Fast Food Nation" was published to critical acclaim and became an international bestseller. Eric Schlosser's expose revealed how the fast food industry has altered the landscape of America, widened the gap between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and transformed food production throughout the world. The book changed the way millions of people think about what they eat and helped to launch today's food movement.
In a new afterword for this edition, Schlosser discusses the growing interest in local and organic food, the continued exploitation of poor workers by the food industry, and the need to ensure that every American has access to good, healthy, affordable food. "Fast Food Nation" is as relevant today as it was a decade ago. The book inspires readers to look beneath the surface of our food system, consider its impact on society and, most of all, think for themselves.
"As disturbing as it is irresistible . . . Exhaustively researched, frighteningly convincing . . . channeling the spirits of Upton Sinclair and Rachel Carson."--"San Francisco Chronicle"
"Schlosser shows how the fast food industry conquered both appetite and landscape."--"The New Yorker"
Eric Schlosser is a contributing editor for the "Atlantic "and the author of "Fast Food Nation," "Reefer Madness," and "Chew on This" (with Charles Wilson).

Humanistic Tourism - Values, Norms and Dignity (Paperback): Maria Della Lucia, Ernestina Giudici Humanistic Tourism - Values, Norms and Dignity (Paperback)
Maria Della Lucia, Ernestina Giudici
R1,642 Discovery Miles 16 420 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Human dignity has experienced limited attention in tourism studies. The interlinked dimensions of dignity in tourism urgently ask for broad avenues of future research, as tourism is both an information-intensive industry and an "experience good" resulting from the relationship and co-creation processes involving hosts and guests in different political, socio-economic, cultural, and environmental contexts. These contexts play a role in how an individual's values, norms, and experiences may be experienced in tourism. This edited book is one of the first attempts to apply to tourism a humanistic management approach entailing a re-discovery of the value of human life, dignity, and awareness of the ethical dimensions of work. The book develops awareness of the contemporary relevance of the human dignity concept to interpret and manage the weaknesses of traditional approaches to tourism and cope with the challenges and new scenarios, including the current COVID-19 pandemic crisis. It presents ethical values and norms as both foundations and vehicles to dignify tourism stakeholders' vision and mission (policy, strategies, and practices) as well as people/tourist beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. It grounds humanistic education as a pervasive mechanism to innovate tourism management contents and practices by offering to different targets new educational and training formats or framing differently traditional ones. Presenting both a critical and a positive approach to tourism management, the diversity of disciplinary approaches, case studies, and examples makes the book attractive to a variety of readers including tourism scholars, researchers, practitioners, and postgraduate students of management and organization disciplines.

It can take the form of a Molotov Cocktail or a Suicide Bomber detonating within a crowd. It can be a sophisticated electronic explosive device or a bomb in a shoe. Today's terrorism threats, and their constant assault on global security continues to be a menace of great concern.

Providing a hands-on look inside the ugly, blood-stained world of global terrorism, Introduction to Terrorism covers the evolution of terrorism, its growing sophistication, and its cynical indifference to human life. It begins by covering the history of terrorism and showing how the threats have changed since the September 11, 2001 attacks. It examines the methods America has chosen to guard against and deal with these threats using its military, government, and civilian agencies.

Illustrating and examining current and future challenges, this state-of-the-art text follows a flow model developed and successfully taught in the classroom at several colleges and universities. Designed to follow the standard academic semester (one chapter per week), the book's content, style, presentation, and organization have been class-tested and validated.

Dimitri Ioannides, Dallen Timothy
R5,028 Discovery Miles 50 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The United States continues to provide opportunities for travel and tourism to domestic and international travellers. This is the first book to offer students a comprehensive overview of both tourism and travel in this region, paying specific attention to the disciplines of Geography, Tourism Studies and, more generally, Social Science. Tourism in the USA explains the evolution of tourism paying attention to the forces that shaped the product that exists today. The focus of the book includes the manner in which tourism has played out in various contexts; the role of federal, state, and local policy is also examined in terms of the effects it has had on the US travel industry and on destinations. The various elements of tourism demand and supply are discussed and the influence that transportation (especially Americans' high personal mobility rates and love affair with the auto) has had on the sector highlighted. The economics of tourism are fleshed out before focusing more narrowly on both the urban and rural settings where tourism occurs. A look into the manner in which the spatial structure of cities is transformed through tourism is also offered. Additionally, a brief examination of future issues in American tourism is presented along with explanations concerning the ascendancy of tourism as an economic development tool in various areas. The book combines theory and practice as well as integrating a range of useful student orientated resources to aid understanding and spur further debate, which can be used for independent study or in class exercises. These include: 'Closer Look' case studies with reflective questions to help show theory in practice and encourage critical thinking about tourism developments in this region 'Discussion Questions' at the end of each chapter encourage stimulating debates 'Further Reading' sections direct the readers to related book and web resources so that they can learn more about the topics covered in each chapter. Written in an engaging style and supported with visual aids, this book will provide students globally with an in-depth and essential understanding of the complexities of tourism and travel in the USA.

Event Tourism (Hardcover): Stephen J. Page, Joanne Connell Event Tourism (Hardcover)
Stephen J. Page, Joanne Connell
R24,078 Discovery Miles 240 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Edited by two leading scholars in the field, this is the first title in a new Routledge Major Works series, Critical Concepts in Tourism. It is a four-volume collection of canonical and cutting-edge research in event tourism.

The origins of event tourism as a topic of serious academic interest are comparatively recent. The subject is largely a postwar development which began especially to unfold in the 1970s, not least in response to a growing interest and recognition of the potential value of events to economies, societies, and their cultures, as well as to environmental regeneration. In part, the continued evolution of the subject has arisen from the development of convention and exhibition management as cognate areas but, through time, policy-makers, planners, and destination managers became aware of the potentially significant and wide role of events in specific localities, ranging in scale from the Olympic Games to community festivals.

Event tourism is now a vibrant and dynamic field of study and research, and the sheer scale of the growth in its output makes this Routledge collection especially timely. A wide range of social-science journals have published material about event tourism and this new Major Work makes available foundational pieces of scholarship?as well as cutting-edge research?from these disparate, and sometimes less accessible sources, as well as from the leading UK, European, and North American tourism journals, and from other hard-to-find publications.

As well as bringing together the key studies and journal articles that have shaped serious thought about event tourism, the collection will be welcomed as the first mapping of an area that to date has lacked an interdisciplinary synthesis. The thematic organization of the collection, together with the editors? introductions and their commentaries on the collected texts, will make sense of the wide range of approaches, theories, and concepts that have informed event tourism, and will review the history of the subject and the rise of its identity and research agenda. It is an essential collection destined to be valued as a vital research resource by all scholars and students of the subject.

Blogging Wildlife - The Perception of Animals by Hikers on the Appalachian Trail (Paperback): Kate Marx Blogging Wildlife - The Perception of Animals by Hikers on the Appalachian Trail (Paperback)
Kate Marx
R1,337 Discovery Miles 13 370 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This volume reports on the encounters between hikers and wildlife on the Appalachian Trail. Based on narratives provided by trail hikers, it explores the ways in which humans relate to the animals with whom they temporarily share a home. With attention to the themes of pilgrimage, the changing perception of the animals encountered and reactions to them, risk, auditory experience, and a sense of wildness, the author considers the meaning constituted by nonhuman animals in the context of the walkers' narrative journeys. A phenomenologically informed study of the ways in which people perceive wild animals when in an unmediated wilderness setting, how they navigate interactions with them, and how they experience living among them, Blogging Wildlife will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in anthrozoology and human-animal relations.

Tourism Development and the Environment - Beyond Sustainability? (Hardcover): Richard Sharpley Tourism Development and the Environment - Beyond Sustainability? (Hardcover)
Richard Sharpley
R4,557 Discovery Miles 45 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Tourism Development and the Environment: Beyond Sustainability? challenges the sustainable tourism development paradigm that has come to dominate both theoretical and practical approaches to tourism development over the last two decades. It extends the sustainable tourism debate beyond the arguably managerialist 'blueprint' and destination-focused approach that continues to characterise even the most recent 'sustainability' agenda within tourism development. Reviewing the evolution of the sustainable tourism development concept, its contemporary manifestations in academic literature and policy developments and processes, the author compares its limitations to prevailing political-economic, socio-cultural and environmental contexts. He then proposes alternative approaches to tourism development which, nevertheless, retain environmental sustainability as a prerequisite of tourism development. This book also acts as an introduction to the Earthscan series Tourism, Environment and Development. About the series: 'Tourism, Environment and Development' aims to explore, within a variety of contexts, the developmental role of tourism as it relates explicitly to its environmental consequences. Each book will review critically and challenge 'traditional' perspectives on (sustainable) tourism development, exploring new approaches that reflect contemporary economic, socio-cultural and political contexts.

Supply Chain Security - How to Support Safety and Reduce Risk In Your Supply Chain Process (Paperback): Andrzej Szymonik,... Supply Chain Security - How to Support Safety and Reduce Risk In Your Supply Chain Process (Paperback)
Andrzej Szymonik, Robert Stanislawski
R1,510 Discovery Miles 15 100 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Contemporary supply chains operate under the pressure of customer requirements, increasing price competition, sudden increases or decreases in demand, unforeseen obstacles and new threats. The right way to improve the functioning of the flow of material and accompanying information is not only the continuous collection of data but also their collection, analysis, inference and decision-making with the use of decision support systems, expert systems and artificial intelligence. Such procedures make it easier for logisticians not only to forecast processes but also to predict (forecast) and identify potential problems and facilitate the implementation of optimal modern solutions, paying attention to current trends in the supply chain market. An important issue that affects the quality, efficiency and availability (continuity) of the processes implemented within the supply chain is security. This is an area that is not clearly defined. This book uses theoretical and practical knowledge to define security in the supply chain as a state that gives a sense of certainty and guarantees the flow of material goods and services (in accordance with the 7w rule) as well as a smooth flow of information for the planning and management of logistics processes. Tools and instruments used to ensure the security of the supply chain contribute to the protection and survival in times of dangerous situations (threats) and adaptation to new conditions (susceptibility to unplanned situations). When analyzing the needs and structure of the 21st century supply chains, in the context of their security, it is impossible to ignore the problem of their digitization, which enables the determination of optimal routes and the anticipation of possible threats (crisis situations). Automatic data exchange between various departments of the company along the upper and lower part of the supply chain improves the functioning of the warehouse management through, among others, automation, robotization and pro-activity. It also contributes to efficient, good communication and market globalization. Automation also brings new, extremely attractive business models with regard to occupational safety, ergonomics and environmental protection. To meet the needs of creating modern supply chains, the book analyzes and presents current and future solutions that affect security and the continuity of supply chains.
