British Shipbuilding and the State since 1918 - A Political Economy of Decline (Paperback): Lewis Johnman, Hugh Murphy British Shipbuilding and the State since 1918 - A Political Economy of Decline (Paperback)
Lewis Johnman, Hugh Murphy
R1,105 Discovery Miles 11 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first book-length analysis of 20th-century shipbuilding at the national level in Britain. It is based on the full breadth of primary and secondary sources available, blending the records of the UK government with those of the British Shipbuilding Employers Federation and Shipbuilding Conference, as well as making use of a range of records from individual yards, technical societies, and the shipping trade press. Few industries attest to the decline of Britain's political and economic power as does the near disappearance of British shipbulding. On the eve of the First World War, British shipbuilding produced more than the rest of the world combined. But, by the 1980s, the industry that had dominated world markets and underpinned British maritime power accounted for less than 1 percent of total world output. Throughout its decline, a remarkable relationship developed between the shipbuilding industry and the UK government as both sought to restore the fortunes and dominance of this once great enterprise. Authors: Lewis Johnman is Principal Lecturer in history at the University of Westminster in London. His previous books include The Suez Crisis (Routledge, 1997). Hugh Murphy is Senior Caird Research Fellow at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.

Techniques for Ship Handling and Bridge Team Management (Hardcover): Hiroaki Kobayashi Techniques for Ship Handling and Bridge Team Management (Hardcover)
Hiroaki Kobayashi
R2,517 Discovery Miles 25 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hiroaki Kobayashi has trained 1500 mariners in ship handling over twenty years and he has systematized the methods of safe navigation into nine elemental techniques. Taking a rigorous and scientific look at good practice and attitudes, good seamanship can be viewed as a series of concrete technical functions, which can be in terms of competencies. By giving proper attention to human factors the conditions for maintaining system safety can be defined, and the interaction of human competencies and environmental conditions and their effects on system safety can be recognised. System safety in turn depends on good bridge team management, with particular emphasis on communication, cooperation and leadership - communication for the exchange of information, cooperation to smooth team activities, and leadership to ensure that each member of the team performs successfully.

Maritime Clusters and the Ocean Economy - An Integrated Approach to Managing Coastal and Marine Space (Paperback): Peter B.... Maritime Clusters and the Ocean Economy - An Integrated Approach to Managing Coastal and Marine Space (Paperback)
Peter B. Myles
R1,362 Discovery Miles 13 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last decade the concept of clustering has become a central idea for analyzing the competitiveness of nations, industries and firms. This book shows how the cluster concept can be usefully applied to the study of maritime activities. Such activities, including shipping, shipbuilding and port and maritime services, are clearly geographically concentrated in a number of maritime clusters. However, as the author shows, these are having to compete with other uses of the coasts and oceans including capture fisheries, marine aquaculture, offshore energy and tourism. Sound governance and planning is therefore required to manage the competing claims for ocean space. The book shows how competing industries and other stakeholders can cooperate and benefit from an integrated approach to the development of maritime clusters. The contribution of approaches such as integrated coastal zone management and innovations such as ocean business councils, as well as coordinated networks of maritime clusters are reviewed. Case studies are included from around the world, including detailed examples of the development of the Nelson Mandela Bay Maritime Cluster in South Africa and from Poland in the Baltic Sea.

Towards a Better Port Industry - Port Development, Management and Policy (Hardcover): Peter W. de Langen Towards a Better Port Industry - Port Development, Management and Policy (Hardcover)
Peter W. de Langen
R4,225 Discovery Miles 42 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Towards a Better Port Industry provides professionals in freight transport and maritime logistics, and specifically the port industry, as well as students in these fields, with a better conceptual understanding of the port industry. It includes key insights and best practices for port management and development, and an overview of new trends and developments relevant for developing winning strategies. After an introduction, Chapter 2 offers a new perspective on port governance, in which public interests, corporatization, state-ownership, and shareholder policies take a central role. Chapter 3 explains how new trends and developments affect port development and argues that assuming 'business as usual' often leads to major port development mistakes. Chapter 4 deals with port development and discusses all major port development challenges, including granting concessions, developing a port vision, crafting stakeholder support, choosing port performance indicators and creating a port innovation system. The final chapter deals with port development strategies and includes themes such as strategies of port development companies, pricing and business development. This book will broaden professionals' conceptual understanding of the ports industry, and provide insights on the latest developments in this area. For students, this book provides an industry-focused and non-technical 'essential reading' for gaining a deep understanding of the ports industry.

Investigating Human Error - Incidents, Accidents, and Complex Systems, Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): Barry Strauch Investigating Human Error - Incidents, Accidents, and Complex Systems, Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Barry Strauch
R1,587 Discovery Miles 15 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book the author applies contemporary error theory to the needs of investigators and of anyone attempting to understand why someone made a critical error, how that error led to an incident or accident, and how to prevent such errors in the future. Students and investigators of human error will gain an appreciation of the literature on error, with numerous references to both scientific research and investigative reports in a wide variety of applications, from airplane accidents, to bus accidents, to bonfire disasters. Based on the author's extensive experience as an accident investigator and instructor of both aircraft accident investigation techniques and human factors psychology, it reviews recent human factors literature, summarizes major transportation accidents, and shows how to investigate the types of errors that typically occur in high risk industries. It presents a model of human error causation influenced largely by James Reason and Neville Moray, and relates it to error investigations with step-by-step guidelines for data collection and analysis that investigators can readily apply as needed. This second edition of Investigating Human Error has been brought up to date throughout, with pertinent recent accidents and safety literature integrated. It features new material on fatigue, distraction (eg mobile phone and texting) and medication use. It also now explores the topics of corporate culture, safety culture and safety management systems. Additionally the second edition considers the effects of the reduction in the number of major accidents on investigation quality, the consequences of social changes on transportation safety (such as drinking and driving, cell phone use, etc), the contemporary role of accident investigation, and the effects of the prosecution of those involved in accidents.

Policing, Port Security and Crime Control - An Ethnography of the Port Securityscape (Hardcover): Yarin Eski Policing, Port Security and Crime Control - An Ethnography of the Port Securityscape (Hardcover)
Yarin Eski
R4,501 Discovery Miles 45 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ports are the vital hubs of the maritime transport industry, and crucial to the flow of global trade. The protection of this global supply chain from crime and terrorism is a fundamental objective of port security, and is a landscape beset by new challenges and changes post 9/11. Building on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork in two major European ports, Yarin Eski discusses how operational policing and security realities and identities are established, and examines how industrial commercialization has aggravated security issues. Policing, Port Security and Crime Control offers a compelling empirically balanced account of the attitudes and practices of port police officers and security officers, exploring the everyday realities and ambitions of these street-level professionals as they seek to (re)establish a meaningful occupational identity. In doing so, this book presents a criminological understanding of the way that security questions and procedures are integrated into the daily lives of those that protect the industrial port sites, where they themselves must interrupt the global supply chain in order to defend it. Exploring topics such as port security management, multi-agency policing, port theft, drug trafficking, human smuggling and terrorism, this book offers a major contribution to the growing literature on transnational crime and security and is one of the first to offer an ethnographic approach to port security. This book is interdisciplinary and will appeal to criminologists, sociologists, ethnographers and those engaged with policing and security studies, as well as professionals in the field of multi-agency policing, border control, security and governance of the port and wider maritime industry.

The Aberdeen Line - George Thompson Jnr's Incomparable Shipping Enterprise (Hardcover): Peter King The Aberdeen Line - George Thompson Jnr's Incomparable Shipping Enterprise (Hardcover)
Peter King; Foreword by Andrew Leggatt
R764 R672 Discovery Miles 6 720 Save R92 (12%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Founded in 1825 by the 21-year-old George Thompson Jnr, the Aberdeen Line developed over 100 years into one of the best-respected shipping lines in Britain. Initially engaged in the UK coastal, Baltic, North American, South American, China and Antipodean trade routes, before settling to become the longest-serving line on the Australian trade via the Cape, the name of Thompson's Aberdeen was synonymous with the highest professional standards, with such jewels as the clipper Thermopylae and their first steamer, SS Aberdeen. The Aberdeen name navigated commercial takeovers by the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, Shaw Savill and Albion, Lord Kylsant's Royal Mail Group and Furness Withy, before becoming all but forgotten when it finally furled its sails in 1957. Here Peter King seeks to bring this once prominent shipping line's history to light once more for the enjoyment of shipping enthusiasts and maritime historians everywhere.

An engaging first-hand memoir of life in the Royal Navy during the Cold War Tony Beasley joined the Royal Navy as a teenager in 1946. This biography recalls the adventures he had during his time in the Navy, from training and specialisation as a telegraphist to being unexpectedly sent to work on submarines. He describes what it was like to work on a submarine during the Cold War, and describes the patrols and missions he was involved in, in particular when the submarine he was serving on was sent to the Barents Sea to undertake covert operations, namely to spy on the Soviet Fleet. Before this mission the crew of the submarine were advised that if anything went wrong it 'never happened'. Needless to say it did go wrong. Tony emerged a hero, but a hero who wasn't allowed to tell anyone where he had been or what he had done. Now in his eighties, Tony finally gets to tell his story.
