Psychology from the Standpoint of the Subject - Selected Writings of Klaus Holzkamp (Hardcover): Klaus Holzkamp, Andrew Boreham Psychology from the Standpoint of the Subject - Selected Writings of Klaus Holzkamp (Hardcover)
Klaus Holzkamp, Andrew Boreham; Edited by E. Schraube, U. Osterkamp; Tod Sloan
R2,913 Discovery Miles 29 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Klaus Holzkamp (1927-1995) was the founder of German Critical Psychology working on the fundamental renewal of academic psychology. His ideas inspired generations of young scholars discontent with the socio-political function of psychology and the human sciences. Although his approach is discussed internationally, most of his work is not yet available in English. This selection of Holzkamp's writings provides an introduction to his "Psychology from the Standpoint of the Subject."
In contrast to contemporary psychology's worldlessness, Holzkamp's psychological approach centers on 'human agency' as the individuals' practical influence over the conditions of their lives. Instead of seeking to optimize the individual's adjustment to prevailing conditions, the issue here is the justifiability of such an adjustment as well as the danger of reproducing the conditions of one's own powerlessness by adopting ruling self-evidences. 'Social self-understanding' on the societal reality of individual experience and action plays a key role both as the epistemic interest and method of research.

Psychology of Liberation - Theory and Applications (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Maritza Montero, Christopher C. Sonn Psychology of Liberation - Theory and Applications (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Maritza Montero, Christopher C. Sonn
R5,990 Discovery Miles 59 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since the mid-1980s, the psychology of liberation movement has been a catalyst for collective and individual change in communities throughout Latin America, and beyond; and recent political developments are making its powerful, transformative ideas more relevant than ever before. Psychology of Liberation: Theory and Applications updates the activist frameworks developed by Ignacio Martin-Baro and Paulo Freire with compelling stories from the frontlines of conflict in the developing and developed worlds, as social science and psychological practice are allied with struggles for peace, justice, and equality.

In these chapters, liberation is presented as both an ongoing process and a core dimension of wellbeing, entailing the reconstruction of social identity and the transformation of all parties involved, both oppressed and oppressors. It also expands the social consciousness of professionals, bringing more profound meaning to practice and enhancing related areas such as peace psychology, as shown in articles such as these:

  • Philippines: the role of liberation movements in the transition to democracy.
  • Venezuela: liberation psychology as a therapeutic intervention with street youth.
  • South Africa: the movement for representational knowledge.
  • Muslim world: religion, the state, and the gendering of human rights.
  • Ireland: linking personal and political development.
  • Australia: addressing issues of racism, identity, and immigration.
  • Colombia: building cultures of peace from the devastation of war.

Psychology of Liberation demonstrates the commitment to overcome social injustices and oppression. The book is a critical resource for social and community psychologists as well as policy analysts. It can also be used as a text for graduate courses in psychology, sociology, social work and community studies.

Children in Groups - A Social Work Perspective (Hardcover): Marian F. Fatout Children in Groups - A Social Work Perspective (Hardcover)
Marian F. Fatout
R2,035 Discovery Miles 20 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Does social work theory and practice give adequate attention to the specific needs of children? Fatout contends that it does not. All too often social work focuses on the family as a whole, the individual family members, or marital pairs. Relatively little attention is given to the child and, in a world of more and more single-parent families, latchkey children, and violent methods of problem-solving among children, this shortcoming needs to be addressed. Fatout does so by providing a detailed review of the specific content, methods, and skills needed to apply group approaches to the problems of children.

Does social work theory and practice give adequate attention to the specific needs of children? Professor Fatout contends that it does not. All too often social work focuses on the family as a whole, the individual family members, or marital pairs. Relatively little attention is given to the child and, in a world of more and more single-parent families, latchkey children, and violent methods of problem-solving among children, this shortcomming needs to be addressed.

Fatout seeks to fill a void in the current literature regarding the use of specific content, methods, and skills in working with children in groups. Groups are a viable method for working with children, but little attention has been paid to this approach. There are many theories about working with groups, but practitioners must determine the priority to be given to specific aspects of the theories to make them as workable as possible with this age group. There are special content and focus issues which must be understood and applied successfully; this book provides the background and needed analysis to accomplish this. As such, it will be a valuable tool for social work students, researchers, and practitioners working with children and family issues.

Trust and Distrust - Sociocultural Perspectives (Hardcover, New): Ivana Markova, Alex Gillespie Trust and Distrust - Sociocultural Perspectives (Hardcover, New)
Ivana Markova, Alex Gillespie; Series edited by Jaan Valsiner
R2,822 Discovery Miles 28 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A volume in Advances in Cultural Psychology Series Editor: Jaan Valsiner, Clark University The dynamics of trust and distrust are central to understanding modern society. These dynamics are evident at all levels of society, from the child's relation to caregivers to the individual's relation to the state, and they span from taken for granted trusting relationships to highly reflective and negotiated contractual interactions. The collection of papers in this book questions the diverse ways in which the concept of trust has been previously used, and advances a coherent theorisation of the socio-cultural dynamics of trust and distrust. In this volume, trust and distrust are analysed in relation to lay knowledge and situated in historical, cultural and interactional contexts. The contexts analysed include witch-hunting during the Reformation, China before and after the move to capitalism, building close personal relationships in South Korea, the representation of political corruption in Brazil, tourists bargaining for souvenirs in the Himalaya, disclosing being HIV+ in India, the historical shaping of trust in Portugal, and the role of trust and distrust in the economic development of the Baltic States. Throughout these analyses, and in associated commentaries and theoretical chapters, the focus is upon the cultural and social constitution of trust and distrust.

The Violence of Care - Rape Victims, Forensic Nurses, and Sexual Assault Intervention (Hardcover): Sameena Mulla The Violence of Care - Rape Victims, Forensic Nurses, and Sexual Assault Intervention (Hardcover)
Sameena Mulla
R2,875 Discovery Miles 28 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Winner, 2017 Margaret Mead Award presented by the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Applied Anthropology Honorable Mention, 2015 Eileen Basker Memorial Prize presented by the Society for Medical Anthropology Analyzes the ways in which nurses work to collect and preserve evidence while addressing the needs of sexual assault victims as patients Every year in the US, thousands of women and hundreds of men participate in sexual assault forensic examinations. Drawing on four years of participatory research in a Baltimore emergency room, Sameena Mulla reveals the realities of sexual assault response in the forensic age. Taking an approach developed at the intersection of medical and legal anthropology, she analyzes the ways in which nurses work to collect and preserve evidence while addressing the needs of sexual assault victims as patients. Mulla argues that blending the work of care and forensic investigation into a single intervention shapes how victims of violence understand their own suffering, recovery, and access to justice-in short, what it means to be a "victim". As nurses race the clock to preserve biological evidence, institutional practices, technologies, and even state requirements for documentation undermine the way in which they are able to offer psychological and physical care. Yet most of the evidence they collect never reaches the courtroom and does little to increase the number of guilty verdicts. Mulla illustrates the violence of care with painstaking detail, illuminating why victims continue to experience what many call "secondary rape" during forensic intervention, even as forensic nursing is increasingly professionalized. Revictimization can occur even at the hands of conscientious nurses, simply because they are governed by institutional requirements that shape their practices. The Violence of Care challenges the uncritical adoption of forensic practice in sexual assault intervention and post-rape care, showing how forensic intervention profoundly impacts the experiences of violence, justice, healing and recovery for victims of rape and sexual assault.

Lifestyle Market Segmentation (Hardcover, New): Ronald D. Michman Lifestyle Market Segmentation (Hardcover, New)
Ronald D. Michman
R2,565 Discovery Miles 25 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As businesses have grown to realize that the success of operations is more and more dependent upon an adequate knowledge of consumer behavior, the importance of lifestyle market segmentation has increased steadily. In this volume, Ronald Michman shows how social and cultural changes in group dynamics and purchasing influences can be used in making lifestyle marketing decisions. Working from a management-oriented perspective, Michman describes the key steps in market planning--interpreting signals of change, assessing the implications of change, and developing strategies to take advantage of the change--and challenges the viewpoint that strategies from lifestyle market segmentation studies can be developed in the short term.

Viewing lifestyle market segmentation as just one aspect of an overall marketing plan, Michman links the specific strategies of this approach to the larger issues of strategic planning. The first three chapters of the book place the topics of market segmentation and lifestyle segmentation into a historical perspective, and trace the development of these marketing approaches. The next three chapters focus on group dynamics and purchasing influences, covering specific target markets such as singles, teens, the elderly, and ethnic groups. Methods for cultivating these markets through lifestyle segmentation strategies are fully discussed. In the final three chapters, lifestyle segmentation is examined in relation to the impact on consumer behavior of decision making, purchasing habits, and changing values. With its emphasis on practical application, this work will be a valuable resource for managers and other professionals in the marketing field, as well as for students in business and marketing courses.

Fantasies of Flight (Hardcover): Daniel M. Ogilvie Fantasies of Flight (Hardcover)
Daniel M. Ogilvie
R876 Discovery Miles 8 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fantasies of Flight invigorates the field of personality psychology by challenging the contemporary academic view that individuals are best studied as carriers of traits. Daniel Ogilvie exchanges a heart-to-heart, case study approach to understanding human behavior for the current strategies of categorizing and comparing individuals according to their manifest traits. Ogilvie asks and endeavors to answer questions like "What were the psychological conditions that led Sir James Barrie to create a character named Peter Pan?" and "What were the dynamics behind the Marshall Herff Applewhite's conviction that a space ship, hiding behind the Hale-Bopp comet, would rescue him and his Heaven's Gate followers after they enacted a mass suicide pact in 1997?" Answering these questions requires him to resurrect "old" ways to think about personality and "old" strategies for studying individuals one by one. Early in the book, Ogilvie reviews the history of why intensive case studies were discredited in psychology and describes how Sigmund Freud's psychobiographical account of Leonardo da Vinci's fascination with flight inadvertently abetted critics of psychoanalytic psychology. He then performs a partial psychobiography of James Barrie and the origins of Peter Pan, followed by an investigation of Carl Jung, who fashioned the collective unconscious to serve as humankind's link to eternity. Arguing that personality psychology needs to become less insular, Ogilvie integrates information from the disciplines of developmental psychology and neuroscience into a theory regarding the latent needs that both Barrie and Jung sought to satisfy. The theory, including its emphasis on the onset of self and consciousness, is then applied to an array of well-known and obscure individuals with ascensionistic inclinations. Well written and accessible, but complex and scholarly, this volume will restore interest in the investigation of people's inner lives.

Real advances are not made in blind alleys (or culs-de-sac). In Social Psychology, as in every branch of science, the paths which appear to offer progress do not always result in theoretical elegance. Certain basic problems persistently defy final solution. This volume surveys the foundations and methods of Social Psychology with the aim of identifying ways out of the research maze. It examines the history and traditions of the field, looks at methodology and conceptual schemes, and discusses the actual research methods used.

Relating to Environments - A New Look at Umwelt (Hardcover, New): Rosemarie Sokol Chang Relating to Environments - A New Look at Umwelt (Hardcover, New)
Rosemarie Sokol Chang; Series edited by Jaan Valsiner
R2,550 Discovery Miles 25 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A volume in Advances in Cultural Psychology Series Editor: Jaan Valsiner, Clark University Book Summary: Jakob von Uexkull founded Umwelt research with a clear idea - that humans are not qualitatively different than other species. Umwelt, literally "outer-world," is the study of the organism in relation to the world around it, as well as the meaning that the world holds for that organism. Thus the world is a truly subjective place. While von Uexkull's theory has entered into the social sciences via semiotics, and biology via ethology, the authors of these chapters go between and beyond these disciplines to examine everything from cells to spiders to humans and culture. The authors adopt the framework of Umwelt theory to examine unique aspects of the natural world by relating the inner world of the subject and the objects to which that organism attends.

Advances in Group Processes (Hardcover): Edward J. Lawler, Shane R Thye, Michael W. Macy Advances in Group Processes (Hardcover)
Edward J. Lawler, Shane R Thye, Michael W. Macy
R3,638 Discovery Miles 36 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Advances in Group Processes" publishes theoretical analyses, reviews and theory based empirical chapters on group phenomena. Volume 18 addresses a broad range of theoretical and empirical questions that cut across sociology, psychology, economics, and political science. The first two contributions examine the perceptual and interactional factors that result in leadership and inequality in small groups. The next chapter explores the psychology of buying and selling, focusing in particular on the perceptual biases that emerge when individuals exchange money for goods. The fourth chapter seeks to identify important personal characteristics and social factors that precipitate trust among strangers. Two chapters then address relatively new questions in the social sciences. Chapter five asks how the study of autistic individuals can shed light on basic cognitive processes and a theory of the mind. Chapter six shows how evolutionary psychology can help explain the emergence of social structures such as kinship networks. The final two chapters bring experimental evidence to bear on questions of status, influence, and affective reactions in groups. Overall, the volume includes contributions by major scholars from various social scientific disciplines that work in the general area of group processes.

In this thoroughly updated and expanded second edition, major international theoretical orientations to intergroup relations are outlined and critiqued, with particular attention given to exciting new developments in the field. Changes in approach to such enduring social issues as discrimination are discussed, and new sections focus on emerging topics including affirmative action, tokenism, and multiculturalism.

Genes, Memes, Culture, and Mental Illness - Toward an Integrative Model (Hardcover, 2010): Hoyle Leigh Genes, Memes, Culture, and Mental Illness - Toward an Integrative Model (Hardcover, 2010)
Hoyle Leigh
R3,496 Discovery Miles 34 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What produces mental illness: genes, environment, both, neither? The answer can be found in memes-replicable units of information linking genes and environment in the memory and in culture-whose effects on individual brain development can be benign or toxic. This book reconceptualizes mental disorders as products of stressful gene-meme interactions and introduces a biopsychosocial template for meme-based diagnosis and treatment. A range of therapeutic modalities, both broad-spectrum (meditation) and specific(cognitive-behavioral), for countering negative memes and their replication are considered, as are possibilities for memetic prevention strategies. In this book, the author outlines the roles of genes and memes in the evolution of the human brain; elucidates the creation, storage, and evolution of memes within individual brains; examines culture as a carrier and supplier of memes to the individual; provides examples of gene-meme interactions that can result in anxiety, depression, and other disorders; proposes a multiaxial gene-meme model for diagnosing mental illness; identifies areas of meme-based prevention for at-risk children; and defines specific syndromes in terms of memetic symptoms, genetic/ memetic development, and meme-based treatment.
