In September 1996 a Frenchman, so little known in English football that fans asked "Arsene Who?", walked into Arsenal. In the subsequent 22 years as manager he transformed the club. A total renovation of the training, stadium, style, economics of the team and the attraction of a global audience has taken place under Wenger's instruction. This fascinating era is chronicled from the very beginning with distinctive photographs taken from inside the inner sanctum of the club by official Arsenal photographer Stuart MacFarlane, who has had privileged access for many years. Award winning journalist Amy Lawrence introduces each section to set the scene. This captivating collection of images is captioned with personal anecdotes from Arsene Wenger himself as he reminisces about the significant moments and people that have defined his time at the club.

The "New York Times"-bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany
Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times--the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.
It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington's eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys' own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man's personal quest.

One. Two. Three. That's as long as it took to sear the souls of a dozen young American men, thanks to the craziest, most controversial finish in the history of the Olympics-the 1972 gold-medal basketball contest between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the world's two superpowers at the time. The U.S. team, whose unbeaten Olympic streak dated back to when Adolf Hitler reigned over the Berlin Games, believed it had won the gold medal that September in Munich-not once, but twice. But it was the third time the final seconds were played that counted. What happened? The head of international basketball-flouting rules he himself had created-trotted onto the court and demanded twice that time be put back on the clock. A referee allowed an illegal substitution and an illegal free-throw shooter for the Soviets while calling a slew of late fouls on the U.S. players. The American players became the only Olympic athletes in the history of the games to refuse their medals. Of course, the 1972 Olympics are remembered primarily for a far graver matter, when eleven Israeli team members were killed by Palestinian terrorists, stunning the world and temporarily stopping the games. One American player, Tommy Burleson, had a gun to his head as the hostages were marched past him before their deaths. Through interviews with many of the American players and others, the author relates the horror of terrorism, the pain of losing the most controversial championship game in sports history to a hated rival, and the consequences of the players' decision to shun their Olympic medals to this day.

'What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It's not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. It's the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It's a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father's hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.' Sir Bobby Robson, West Bromwich Albion and England Dean Walton had no choice in his football supporting allegiance, he was born in 1960 to 'Baggies'-mad parents. Over the last fifty years Dean has rarely missed a game at The Hawthorns and has followed his beloved Albion all over the world, watching them play in eighteen different countries. Follow Dean's travels through three divisions over five decades. From UEFA Cup joy on a warm Valencia evening to questioning his own sanity on a freezing cold night in Hartlepool. From Wembley success to humiliating relegation in Bath, every emotion is covered. Football is about much more than the match itself. This book will strike a chord with any dedicated supporter.

From the last-second heroics of Wilmeth Sidat-Singh in Archbold Stadium to the last-second heroics of Donovan McNabb in the Carrier Dome more than a half century later, this book is a chronicle of the rich tradition of Syracuse University sports. There are games that stand the test of time - performances that years, even decades later bring a smile or in some cases a grimace, to a fan's face. They are indelible moments that, when strung together, give you a sense of a college's history. In ""Slices of Orange"", Sal Maiorana and Scott Pitoniak recapture the heroics of running back Jim Brown's 43-point performance against Colgate at old Archbold Stadium; the pain of Keith Smart's jumper that denied Syracuse a national title in 1987; and the joy of forward Carmelo Anthony's levitation act in the 2003 NCAA basketball championship game. They tell of the fierce SU-Georgetown basketball rivalry - and John Thompson's incendiary comments that ignited it - and how the Gait brothers, Paul and Gary, revolutionized the game of lacrosse and laid the foundation for a college sports dynasty.

They have produced a unique book, one in which they show a team photograph for every year of the club's existence since 1884. The collection is not complete because although the club was founded in 1879 as Sunderland and District Teachers by James Allan, an Edinburgh school-teacher working in the town, no photographs exist from before 1884-85. Also missing are photos from the First and Second World Wars when none were taken. One minute before 7pm on Tuesday, May 22, 1945 a packed Lord's roared as Australia beat England in the last over of the first Victory Test. A fortnight after Victory in Europe, the result did not matter - only the cricket. The five matches between a near full-strength England and Australian servicemen, at least one of whom had just been released from a PoW camp, drew huge crowds. Great cricketers played on both sides: Len Hutton, Wally Hammond, Keith Miller, Lindsay Hassett. Everyone hailed the spirit of sportsmanship. Even the result - a 2-2 draw - was satisfying. Yet this story is forgotten today. The only history of the series is a limited-edition Australian book on the subject. The story has characters - besides the stars, men such as the Australian Dambusters Squadron pilot Ross Stanford; the quiet un-Australian Australian spin bowler Reg Ellis; and the English teenagers Donald Carr and John Dewes, who were on the wrong end of Keith Miller discovering that he was the fastest bowler in the world. By using the available sources to the full - newspapers of the time, memoirs, deposited records in England and Australia, recollections of surviving players The Victory Tests details what made the dressing rooms tick - in England's case, the class system of amateurs and professionals; and the tensions inside the Australian team too. Two controversies not aired before but covered in The Victory Tests are the war records of the charismatic Keith Miller - not the war hero his admirers have assumed; and of Sir Donald Bradman, absent in 1945 - and accused of being a war-dodger. Besides the see-sawing games - the largely unknown Australians playing beyond themselves - it's a story of players and sports lovers alike emerging joyously after years of war. Cricket mirrored wider society - people hoped for brighter cricket, just as they hoped for a better post-war world. Their hopes, inevitably, were disappointed. The Australians, wearied by a colourful tour of India, did poorly in matches on their return home and largely returned to obscurity. Even the bomber men's war efforts were later derided. And yet while the Victory Tests were not officially for the Ashes, they offer a refreshing change from the commercial and cynical cricket of the 21st century. The 1945 series brought sporting competition with goodwill - something more than the Ashes.

A season so successful that even European Cup Final defeat to Barcelona couldn't fully diminish the club's achievements. Justin Blundell tells the story of United's triumphs in a punchy, rabidly red-eyed review of every single match and goal. In the wake of the euphoria of Moscow it would have been excusable to regard what followed as an extended hangover. Yet the newly crowned European Champions became World Champions in December following their successful trip to the Far East and when they added the Carling Cup in March they held every honour possible excepting the FA Cup. All this despite a close season dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo's courtship by Real Madrid. This two month long tabloid extravaganza, coming just weeks after United's Moscow triumph, was only settled in mid-August. Then there was possibly the most unpredictable and sensational transfer deadline day in history -- if Manchester City's take-over by Arab billionaires beggared belief, their subsequent attempts to sign any and every player in Europe left the old order reeling. The attempts to de-rail Dimitar Berbatov's GBP30m move to United worried Sir Alex enough for him to pick the Bulgarian up from the tarmac of Manchester airport in his Audi A8. The season that followed had it's own sensations - Chelsea leading and falling away before Liverpool appeared to pull decisively away only for Rafa Benitez's infamous 'fact' rant to unwittingly de-rail them. By the time the rivals met in early March, many assumed that a United win would close out the title. Instead, Liverpool shocked the hosts 4-1, a defeat compounded by another loss at Fulham a week later. It took Frederico Macheda to rescue wins against Villa and Sunderland to keep United a step ahead before a cagey nil-nil with Arsenal confirmed United's 18th record equalling championship. In Europe, Ronaldo confi rmed his standing as the best player in the world by almost single-handedly hauling United into another fi nal. This time, shorn of the industry of Darren Fletcher, United were no match for the Catalans in a game that proved to be the Portuguese's swansong. Written with an eye for the humour and pomposity surrounding the modern game, Justin Blundell brings the matches, goals and managerial spats back to life. From the Ronaldo transfer saga to the despair of defeat in Rome, this is an entertaining, minute-by-minute guide to the matches that really mattered. It contains the season's best quotes from the likes of Ferguson and Benitez to Paddy Crerand and Mickey Thomas. Far from following the tired blueprint of statistics and dry match reports, "18 Times" is a book for everyone who lives and breathes United, not just on match day but every single day.
