For centuries, the game of golf has captivated everyone from the poor working class to the upper crust of society. There is something enigmatic about the game that sets it apart from all other sports. Rife with strict rules on etiquette, yet often played in solitude, golf truly tests the body, mind, and spirit. In this collection of 18 short stories, "The Guru of Golf" celebrates perhaps one of the most widely popular of athletic pursuits. Thomas Moore shows us how golf can be a perfect metaphor for life itself--endlessly mysterious, joyful, and fascinating; while at times frustrating, infuriating, and unbearable. From the tee to the green, Moore intertwines modern and classical tales that illustrate the challenges players face--both on and off the course.Humorous and insightful, "The Guru of Golf "captures the range of emotions associated with its players' ardent determination; searches for meaning behind quiet moments; and reveals the struggles that try our patience, as well as the victories that make the game--and life--worthwhile.

Recent decades have seen a vast growth in sport science and this book documents the formation and work of an organisation, the International Council of Sport. Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), that has provided a foundation for much of this development. The book draws on a wide range of sources to illustrate the important co-ordinating role the Council has played in physical education and sport and examines the emergence and consolidation of the disciplines and themes of sport science. The author shows how ICSSPE has been instrumental in nursing many specialised areas to maturity and, since ICSSPE functioned within a Cold War context, international politics provides the backdrop to the organisation?s pioneering promotion of international understanding in sport science through co-operation between East and West. ICSSPE has not worked in isolation however, and the close association between ICSSPE and UNESCO is discussed in detail by the author, as is the more recent positive relationship with the International Olympic Committee. "For four decades, the history of ICSSPE and the global experience of the Olympic Movement have been intertwined, and from its intellectual inception during the Games of the XVI Olympiad in Melbourne in 1956 to the present, it has made a significant contribution to both the international sport science community and the Olympic Movement." Juan Antonio Samaranch, President, International Olympic Committee

From a gymnast hiding ankle pain so she can compete to a basketball player who withdraws from friends after a season-ending injury, it can be argued that every sport injury affects or is affected in some way by psychological factors. Given the widespread importance of psychological issues in sport injury, it is important for those working with athletes-injured or not-to be aware of the latest developments on the subject. Written by a sport psychology consultant and an athletic trainer, Psychology of Sport Injury provides a thorough explanation of the elements and effects of sport injuries along with up-to-date research and insights for practical application. The authors offer a contemporary approach to preventing, treating, rehabilitating, and communicating professionally about sport injuries that takes into account physical, psychological, and social factors. Psychology of Sport Injury presents sport injury within a broader context of public health and offers insights into the many areas in which psychology may affect athletes, such as risk culture, the many facets of pain, athlete adherence to rehab regimens, the relationship between psychological factors and clinical outcomes, collaboration, and referrals for additional support. The book explores the relevant biological, psychological, and social factors that affect given circumstances. The text consists of four parts: Understanding and Preventing Sport Injuries, Consequences of Sport Injury, Rehabilitation of Sport Injury, and Communication in Sport Injury Management. Psychology of Sport Injury includes evidence-based examples and demonstrates real-world applications that sport health care professionals often face with athletes. Additional pedagogical features include the following: * Focus on Research boxes provide the what and why of the latest research to complement the applied approach of the text. * Focus on Application boxes highlight practical examples to illustrate the material and maintain student engagement. * Psychosocial content aligned with the latest educational competencies of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) helps students prepare for athletic training examinations and supports professional development for practitioners. * A prevention-to-rehabilitation approach gives a framework for understanding sport injury, including precursors to injury, pain as a complex phenomenon, adherence to rehabilitation, and communication and management of injuries with other health care professionals as well as the athlete. * A set of chapter quizzes and a presentation package aid instructors in testing student comprehension and preparing lectures. Psychology of Sport Injury is an educational tool, reference text, and springboard to new ideas for research and practice in any line of work exposed to sport injury. Observing and committing to athletes, especially during times of physical trauma and emotional distress (which are often not separate times), are critical skills for athletic trainers, physical therapists, sport psychologists, coaches, and others who work with athletes on a regular basis.

Expert athletes understand the mind body connection. For years, they have learned mental skills from coaches, consultants, and other practitioners in order to optimize physical performance. Now, these same mental skills are being taught to a broad range of performers, such as dancers, actors, lawyers, surgeons, business leaders, and rescue workers. The resulting new field of performance psychology allows performers from a variety of fields to "get their head out of the way so that their body can do what it's trained to do." In detail, this book shows the everyday practice of performance psychology. Case by case, the stories demonstrate how consultants have helped performers develop confidence, overcome mental blocks, manage emotions, and use preparation techniques such as imagery and positive self-talk in order to achieve the best possible mental state for performance. The chapters blend theory and practice by integrating literature reviews with real-world applications, and they cover a wide range of performers, including athletes, performing artists, business leaders, and professionals in high-risk occupations. Extensive session transcripts are provided, including the consultants' thoughts and reactions throughout the session. Engaging, nuanced, personal, and highly accessible, this book will help practitioners and students from a variety of fields explore performance psychology in action.
Did you know there is an area of your brain known as the 'Lizard Brain' that thinks only about the immediate moment and your means of survival? Yes, in certain circumstances, your 'Rational Brain' can effectively 'shut down' and you are at the mercy of a reptile ...dry-mouthed, sweating, queasy, unable to think clearly - even though you know better. When does the Lizard Brain run the show? It can happen in any number of unfamiliar, uncomfortable, challenging, or 'stressful' riding situations. But here's the thing: with the right kind of training, you can learn to manage the reptile within, which leads to greater confidence with horses, better riding performance, and ultimately, happiness at the barn, at shows, and everywhere in between. Brain Training for Riders teaches you how to: handle uncomfortable emotions, such as fear, anger, anxiety, and embarrassment; hone your mental game and focus your riding time to get the most out of your hours in the saddle; care for your emotional injuries the same way you would care for an injured horse; and produce a state of 'Focused Calm' and tap into the skills you have (whether you know it or not!) to ensure an outstanding ride.
At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Great Britain ranked thirty-sixth in the medals table, finishing below countries like Algeria, Belgium and Kazakhstan. It was their worst ever record, a dismal performance labelled a national disgrace. But then something happened. In Sydney in 2000 and then Athens in 2004, Team GB achieved a much more respectable tenth place. By 2016, in Rio, they finished second, above China and Russia, with sixty-seven medals. How have they so convincingly reversed their fortunes? In Game Changers we meet the coaches and sports scientists who rethink how sport is analysed and understood, how athletes train and perform under pressure. In Liverpool in the 1980s, a motley group - a mathematician, a physiologist, a psychologist and a former Olympic basketball player - began to pioneer new ways of tracking performance. Over the decades that followed, performance analysis came of age, becoming an essential component of any elite team, from English Premier League title winners Manchester City to America's Cup high-performance sailing teams. Using a hybrid of scientific method and trial-and-error, scientists have uncovered the tenets of accelerated learning, the mechanics of physiological adaptation, the organisational principles behind elite teams, the understanding of how hormones and environment affect performance. These discoveries are not confined to athletic endeavours - they are universal and reveal what it takes to win not only in sports, but are applicable across a wide range of disciplines, including business, leadership and education.
Sport and the Brain: The Science of Preparing, Enduring and Winning, Part B, Volume 233 reflects recent advancements in the understanding of how elite athletes prepare for, and perform at, peak levels under the demands of competition. Topics discussed in this new release include a section on Exploring the Applicability of the Contextual Interference Effect in Sports Practice, The Resonant System: Linking Brain-body-environment in Sport Performance, the Effects of Acute High-intensity Exercise on Cognitive Performance in Trained Individuals: A Systematic Review, Moving Concussion Care to the Next Level: The Emergence and Role of Concussion Clinics in the UK, and Neurocognitive Mechanisms of the Flow State. This longstanding series takes a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on aspects of psychology, neuroscience, skill learning, talent development and physiology. |
