Hugo ka Canham presents an understanding of life and death based on indigenous and black ways of knowing that he terms Mpondo theory. In Riotous Deathscapes, Hugo ka Canham presents an understanding of life and death based on indigenous and black ways of knowing that he terms Mpondo theory. Focusing on amaMpondo people from rural Mpondoland, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Canham outlines the methodologies that have enabled the community’s resilience and survival. He assembles historical events and a cast of ancestral and living characters, following the tenor of village life, to offer a portrait of how Mpondo people live and die in the face of centuries of abandonment, trauma, antiblackness, and death. Canham shows that Mpondo theory is grounded in and develops in relation to the natural world, where the river and hill are key sites of being and resistance. Central too, is the interface between ancestors and the living, in which life and death become a continuity and a boundlessness that white supremacy and neoliberalism cannot interdict. By charting a course of black life in Mpondoland, Canham tells a story of blackness on the African continent and beyond.
David Poole's innovative LINEAR ALGEBRA: A MODERN INTRODUCTION, 4e emphasizes a vectors approach and better prepares students to make the transition from computational to theoretical mathematics. Balancing theory and applications, the book is written in a conversational style and combines a traditional presentation with a focus on student-centered learning. Theoretical, computational, and applied topics are presented in a flexible yet integrated way. Stressing geometric understanding before computational techniques, vectors and vector geometry are introduced early to help students visualize concepts and develop mathematical maturity for abstract thinking. Additionally, the book includes ample applications drawn from a variety of disciplines, which reinforce the fact that linear algebra is a valuable tool for modeling real-life problems.
Now in its third edition, Pharmacology in Clinical Practice has been updated to ensure it remains up-to-date and relevant. Particular care has been taken to simplify and clarify difficult concepts by explaining the links between pharmacology and physiology by providing definitions of new concepts, and using plain language for ease of understanding. Fundamental concepts, such as pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, are well covered in a matter that is accessible and clear. Individual chapters cover the various systems of the body. Updates include:
Women’s freedom is in jeopardy. Misogyny is everywhere. Courtship, duty and marriage are dying phenomenons – nails in the coffin to female happiness. Our bodies are an inventory of pain and weakness. Evidently, it is a very bad time to be female. Or so we’re told. In Good Slut, Zoe Strimpel examines the myths that submerge women in narratives of victimhood and fragility, instead offering a much-needed dose of realism. Because while women’s agency is increasingly under threat by the return of ‘traditional’ values, fuelled by fear-mongering discourse from both the political left and right, it’s unequivocally never been a better time to be a woman. It may be complex terrain, yet women’s pain, injustices, experiences and achievements are taken more seriously now than ever before. What’s more, the opportunities in free societies are endless: whether sexual freedom, bodily autonomy or financial independence, women can, should and will – if they desire – have it all. Courageous, defiant and incisive in its approach, Good Slut argues that liberation – true liberation – comes not from fear or shame, but from making the most out of the intertwined forces of money, power, and, of course, sex. A fierce celebration of female agency and choice, it is a timely reminder to get back in touch with the joy and freedoms available to us – if only we dare to grasp it.

Buckle up for a tour of South Africa – your guide the inimitable Sihle Khumalo. Born in South Africa, and having lived here for almost fifty years, Khumalo reflects on the past and ponders the future of this captivating yet complex country. He delves into the history of the names given to our towns and cities (from Graaff-Reinet to Schweizer-Reneke to Zastron) and in the process raises issues we might not have interrogated fully. This is a thought-provoking account by a South African who asks uncomfortable questions and forces his compatriots to contemplate what the future of this country (or cowntry) might hold. Why ‘cowntry’, Sihle? Consider the shady characters who’ve been milking this piece of land for centuries. And the fact that some politicians mispronounce the word ‘country’. But who knows? Maybe it is not mispronunciation – perhaps they’re giving us a message: the people in power are milking this country and it’s all just a game…

What was supposed to be a short business trip to Equatorial Guinea turned into a journey to the depths of hell. Black Beach, located on Bioko island off the mainland of Equatorial Guinea, is one of the world’s most feared prisons, notorious for its brutality and inhumane conditions. In 2013, South African businessman Daniel Janse van Rensburg set off to the West African country to finalise a legitimate airline contract with a local politician. Within days, Daniel was arrested by the local Rapid Intervention Force and detained without trial in the island’s infamous ‘Guantanamo’ cells, and was later taken to Black Beach. This is his remarkable story of survival over nearly two years, made possible by his unwavering faith and the humanity of a few fellow inmates. In this thrilling first-person narrative, Daniel relives his ordeal, describing the harrowing conditions in the prison, his extraordinary experiences there, and his ceaseless hope to return to South Africa and be reunited with his family. A story of courage in the face of overwhelming adversity, Black Beach demonstrates the strength of the human spirit and the toll injustice takes on ordinary people who fall foul of the powerful and corrupt.
The past two decades have seen a huge growth in interest in doctoral studies, not only in South Africa but elsewhere as well. Changes in the funding framework for universities in South Africa, in particular, has meant that from 2005 onwards, more funding has been available. However, postgraduate studies are challenging. The "digital revolution", as one example, has had a radical impact on the way research is done in the 21st century. Because of the more widespread availability of information (including personal information), students have had to become more accountable when they conduct research. How To Succeed In Your Master's And Doctoral Studies is organised around eight steps that should be followed for the successful and ethical completion of postgraduate studies, whether they be traditional master's theses, mini-theses or doctoral dissertations. How To Succeed In Your Master's And Doctoral Studies is based on first-hand knowledge of students' experiences with postgraduate studies: what the challenges and problems were, how they navigated the supervisory process and the different styles and approaches of supervisors, the support (or lack thereof) they received from the universities where they had enrolled, and much more. How To Succeed In Your Master's And Doctoral Studies is aimed at students embarking on postgraduate studies.
Modern society is largely dependent on information, and the right to know is essential to any democracy.

Now in its 8th edition, the philosophy at the heart of Bob de Wit’s landmark text Strategy is that an understanding of the topic can only be gained by exposure to the different perspectives in the field. Recognizing that there is no simple answer to the question of ‘what is strategy’, the author navigates readers through contrasting viewpoint readings to encourage discussion and debate, and illustrative cases to acknowledge the importance of strategy in the world of business. Placing the student at the centre of the strategy debates encourages the qualities of creativity, flexibility, independence and analytical depth that are needed to become a strategic thinker.

In hierdie boek word die slawe se rol in die ontstaan van dié eiesoortige kultuur vir die eerste keer verken.
Nurses are faced with questions related to professional practice and what they may or may not do on a daily basis. Nurses also need to deal with the many conflicting demands made by patients, colleagues and hospital management. The ‘new approach’ adopted in this book offers insight into the dilemmas faced by the 21st century nurse. The professional practice issues are addressed in the form of case studies, using real-life examples that put the problems into context. This approach also offers a broad view of the nursing profession, taking into account macro-environmental influences, as well as the new technologies impacting on the profession. A New Approach to Professional Practice explains the legal, professional and ethical framework within which the nurse must practise. The text also touches on the professional heritage and explains the rights of the patient and the rights and responsibilities of the nurse. Subjects such as modern-day challenges, legal and ethical questions, accountability, duty to care, responsibility, and maintenance of standards are also addressed. Key Features:

The aim of this book is to provide a sensitive and intuitive understanding of these debates. In addition, lecturers will be given an innovative approach to what has been previously regarded as a difficult, boring and irrelevant subject.
The Principles of The Law of Property in South Africa, Second Edition, offers a thorough, current and accessible introduction to the general principles of property law in South Africa. Including diverse perspectives, the second edition foregrounds discussion of constitutional perspectives to engage with critical issues and debates that arise within the current and dynamic socio-economic context.
