Several chapters serve as practical manuals for students and trainers in anatomy to refresh or develop their Digital Anatomy skills. We developed this book as a support tool for collaborative efforts around Digital Anatomy, especially in distance learning, international and interdisciplinary contexts. We aim to leverage source material in this book to support new Digital Anatomy courses and syllabi in interdepartmental, interdisciplinary collaborations. Digital Anatomy - Applications of Virtual, Mixed and Augmented Reality provides a valuable tool to foster cross-disciplinary dialogues between anatomists, surgeons, radiologists, clinicians, computer scientists, course designers, and industry practitioners. It is the result of a multidisciplinary exercise and will undoubtedly catalyze new specialties and collaborative Master and Doctoral level courses world-wide. In this perspective, the UNESCO Chair in digital anatomy was created at the Paris Descartes University in 2015 (www.anatomieunesco.org). It aims to federate the education of anatomy around university partners from all over the world, wishing to use these new 3D modeling techniques of the human body.

Physiology of Human Female Lactation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Nikolai Petrovitch Alekseev Physiology of Human Female Lactation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Nikolai Petrovitch Alekseev
R4,230 Discovery Miles 42 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This comprehensive Monograph examines all peripheral and central mechanisms of regulating the secretion of milk from the lactating breast. The author reviews the complete female breast development, starting with the early childhood, up to pregnancy and lactation. Structural and ultrastructural data on the alveolar-ductal system, together with details of breast innervation, are used to investigate the physiological process of lactation. Readers will appreciate the special focus on reflexes, both in the child and the mother, that help to regulate maternal milk production and secretion. Following this, the author sheds a light on the composition and dynamics of milk components during the different periods of lactation. The final section of this volume focusses on practical aspects of modern breastfeeding, like the use of breast pumps or galactogogues, to influence the productivity of milk production. These fundamental principles and structural details will be particularly useful for physiologists and clinicians working in gynecology and pediatrics.

Neuroanatomy Basics: A Clinical Guide (Paperback): Mohammad Noureldine Neuroanatomy Basics: A Clinical Guide (Paperback)
Mohammad Noureldine
R877 Discovery Miles 8 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A hands-on tool for medical students, Neuroanatomy Basics: A Clinical Guide covers key basic neuroanatomy material and the most important clinical correlations that a medical student is required to know. The book's style is simple and features an array of figures/illustrations that will show the student what he/she has just studied. It will follow a breadcrumbs approach that relies heavily on images/figures. Relying on photographic memory is quite helpful in grasping 'dry and rigid' neuroanatomy concepts; hence, the large number of figures contained in the book. Students will not have to refer to an atlas or other references in order to grasp the book's concepts. The peculiar order of sections will guide the student through the sequence of events/anatomical structures back and forth from cellular to structural levels, depending on the stimulus and response.

Neuroendocrine Clocks and Calendars (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Francis J. P. Ebling, Hugh D. Piggins Neuroendocrine Clocks and Calendars (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Francis J. P. Ebling, Hugh D. Piggins
R2,642 Discovery Miles 26 420 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores how daily and seasonal rhythmicity is generated, how these rhythms are synchronised by our environment, and how they regulate the neuroendocrine systems that impact our physiology and behaviour. The constraints of surviving in a seasonal environment have shaped human evolution and migration, have shaped our societies and cultures, and continue to influence our everyday lives, health and wellbeing. Identifying the mechanisms whereby seasonal rhythmicity is generated and regulates the brain and body is not only important for understanding the natural world and relevant to animal production, it also offers many insights into the human condition. Each chapter is written by an international expert in the field of chronobiology. A historical perspective on how research into photoperiodism and rhythmicity progressed is initially provided, but the main focus of this book is on the remarkable studies in the last few decades that have unravelled the molecular and cellular machinery underpinning circadian and circannual timing. Topics covered include the role of melatonin in communicating seasonal information to the brain and pituitary gland, the neuroanatomical pathways in mammals, birds and fish by which changes in photoperiod reach the hypothalamus, the role of glial cells (tanycytes) and thyroid hormone in seasonal rhythmicity, neuroplasticity across seasons, effects of changing day length on mood, regulation of "clock" gene expression, and the role of the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This book will appeal to all students and researchers who wish to learn about current and past research on daily and seasonal rhythmicity. This is the tenth volume in the International Neuroendocrine Federation (INF) Masterclass in Neuroendocrinology series (Volumes 1-7 published by Wiley) that aims to illustrate highest standards and encourage the use of the latest technologies in basic and clinical research and hopes to provide inspiration for further exploration into the exciting field of neuroendocrinology.

Review: "This textbook presents anatomy and physiology in a fun and interactive way.... It is divided into 14 chapters and the way the authors have introduced the information gives it a modern twist. For example, instead of titling a chapter 'The reproductive system', it is called 'From one generation to the next'. ..... What works particularly well is the way the authors have used case studies that reflect the reality of the changing patterns of health and disease.... This book provides a good foundation in clinical application and it seeks to link theory to practice."; Nursing Standard, 27 September 2017, volume 32 number 5

Overtraining Syndrome in Athletes - A Comprehensive Review and Novel Perspectives (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Flavio Cadegiani Overtraining Syndrome in Athletes - A Comprehensive Review and Novel Perspectives (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Flavio Cadegiani
R1,991 Discovery Miles 19 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book discusses major changes in our understanding of the most prevalent non-orthopedic, sports-related condition - overtraining syndrome (OTS), arguing that it should be considered as the manifestation of burnout in athletes, rather than simply the result of excessive training. While the chronic adaptations of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems to exercise are well documented, those of the endocrine system are less well known, and adaptations of the hormonal ranges for athletes are yet to be determined. There is also a lack of standardized diagnostic criteria, consistent assessment methods and biomarkers. This book offers a systematic review of the hormonal aspects of overtraining syndrome, and a comparison with sports-related syndromes triggered by chronic deprivation of different sorts, including the female athlete triad (and its derivative, RED-S) and burnout syndrome of the athlete (BSA). It demonstrates that these conditions, although studied separately from each other, may all be different manifestations of the same condition, leading to 'maladaptive' (dysfunctional forced adaptations to a hostile environment) changes in response to chronic depletion of energy and mechanisms of repair, causing multiple dysfunctions. The author proposes that OTS/Paradoxical Deconditioning Syndrome (PDS), RED-S/TRIAD and BSA are parts of a same condition, or at least a group of similar conditions. Further, the book offers a chronological overview of OTS, based on preliminary research. Given its broad scope, this concise reference book will appeal to a range of health professionals. It allows readers, including those without a strong academic background, to gain a systematic understanding of OTS.

The Violinist's Thumb - And Other Lost Tales of Love, War, and Genius, as Written by Our Genetic Code (Paperback): Sam Kean The Violinist's Thumb - And Other Lost Tales of Love, War, and Genius, as Written by Our Genetic Code (Paperback)
Sam Kean
R513 R482 Discovery Miles 4 820 Save R31 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

From New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean comes more incredible stories of science, history, language, and music, as told by our own DNA.
In "The Disappearing Spoon," bestselling author Sam Kean unlocked the mysteries of the periodic table. In THE VIOLINIST'S THUMB, he explores the wonders of the magical building block of life: DNA.
There are genes to explain crazy cat ladies, why other people have no fingerprints, and why some people survive nuclear bombs. Genes illuminate everything from JFK's bronze skin (it wasn't a tan) to Einstein's genius. They prove that Neanderthals and humans bred thousands of years more recently than any of us would feel comfortable thinking. They can even allow some people, because of the exceptional flexibility of their thumbs and fingers, to become truly singular violinists.
Kean's vibrant storytelling once again makes science entertaining, explaining human history and whimsy while showing how DNA will influence our species' future.

Many new figures and have included many diagnostic images including radiographs, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds. To help the reader feel confident that the major anatomical points have been mastered, review questions and answers have been added at the end of each unit.

Ultrasonic Topographical and Pathotopographical Anatomy - A Color Atlas (Hardcover): Z. M. Seagal Ultrasonic Topographical and Pathotopographical Anatomy - A Color Atlas (Hardcover)
Z. M. Seagal
R4,538 Discovery Miles 45 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written by experienced and well-respected physicians and professors, this new all-color volume presents the ultrasonic topographical and pathotopographical anatomy of the body, including the head, neck, chest, anterolateral abdominal wall, abdominal organs, retroperitoneal space, male and female pelvises, and lower extremities. Specific and non-specific ultrasonic symptoms are suggested for normal and abnormal developmental variants, diffuse and local pathotopographical anatomy. This color atlas contains comparative topographical and pathotopographical data and is the first manual of its kind for students and medical specialists in different areas, including those specializing in medical sonography. The original technology was tested at clinics in patients subjected to ultrasonic monitoring. Because of early detection there were no false-positive or false-negative results. The therapy was effective, and, in some cases, the use of the original method of "seagalography" (optometry and pulsemotorgraphy) has made it possible to develop new methods of treatment and/or to determine the optimal doses of drugs, as well as to develop effective drug complexes for treatment of a given pathology. This important new volume will be valuable to physicians, junior physicians, medical residents, lecturers in medicine, and medical students alike, either as a textbook or as a reference. It is a must-have for any physician's library.
