Imaging and Imagining Palestine is the first comprehensive study of
photography during the British Mandate period (1918-1948). It
addresses well-known archives, photos from private collections
never available before and archives that have until recently
remained closed. This interdisciplinary volume argues that
photography is central to a different understanding of the social
and political complexities of Palestine in this period. While
Biblical and Orientalist images abound, the chapters in this book
go further by questioning the impact of photography on the social
histories of British Mandate Palestine. This book considers the
specific archives, the work of individual photographers, methods
for reading historical photography from the present and how we

Prisoner of the State "is the story of Premier Zhao Ziyang, the man
who brought liberal change to China and who was dethroned at the
height of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 for trying to stop
the massacre. Zhao spent the last years of his life under house
arrest. An occasional detail about his life would slip out, but
scholars and citizens lamented that Zhao never had his final say.
But Zhao did produce a memoir, secretly recording on audio tapes
the real story of what happened during modern China's most critical
moments. He provides intimate details about the Tiananmen
crackdown, describes the ploys and double crosses used by China's
leaders, and exhorts China to adopt democracy in order to achieve
long-term stability. His riveting, behind-the-scenes recollections
form the basis of "Prisoner of the State."
The China that Zhao portrays is not some long-lost dynasty. It is
today's China, where its leaders accept economic freedom but resist
political change. Zhao might have steered China's political system
toward openness and tolerance had he survived. Although Zhao now
speaks from the grave, his voice still has the moral power to make
China sit up and listen.
The present volume is a double edition in English and Arabic about
the art of ornamentations in the performance of the Arabic qanun
(psaltery), and a historical document spanning more than one
hundred years. It is based on George Sawa's experience as an artist
and performer, as well as the experience of his teachers and their
teachers. For the latter, Dr Sawa used his recollections of what
his teachers said about their teachers, as well as recordings made
by European companies that recorded their works on 78 rpm at the
beginning of the 20th century. .
Beyond Citizenship focuses on the role of literacy in building a
modern nation-state by examining the government provision of adult
literacy training in early twentieth-century China. Based on
untapped archives and diaries, Di Luo uncovers people's strategic
use of literacy and illiteracy in social interactions and explores
the impact of daily experiences on the expansion of state power.
Highlighting interpersonal and intergroup relations, Beyond
Citizenship suggests a new methodology of studying literacy which
foregrounds the agentive role of historical actors and so moves
away from a more traditional approach that treats literacy itself
as the key factor enabling social change.
This volume considers the possibilities of the term 'transwar' to
understand the history of Asia from the 1920s to the 1960s.
Recently, scholars have challenged earlier studies that suggested a
neat division between the pre- and postwar or colonial/postcolonial
periods in the national histories of East Asia, instead assessing
change and continuity across the divide of war. Taking this
reconsideration further, Transwar Asia explores the complex
processes by which prewar and colonial ideologies, practices, and
institutions from the 1920s and 1930s were reconfigured during
World War II and, crucially, in the two decades that followed, thus
shaping the Asian Cold War and the processes of decolonization and
nation state-formation. With contributions covering the transwar
histories of China, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, the Philippines and
Taiwan, the book addresses key themes such as authoritarianism,
militarization, criminal rehabilitation, market controls,
labor-regimes, and anti-communism. A transwar angle, the authors
argue, sheds new light on the continuing problems that undergirded
the formation of postwar nation-states and illuminates the
political legacies that still shape the various regions in Asia up
to the present.
