The Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland describes the development of libraries in Great Britain and Ireland over some 1500 years, and their role as a part of the social, intellectual and cultural history. In addition to obvious links with the history of books and literature, the volumes include consideration of education, technology, social philosophy, architecture and the arts, as they have affected libraries. The significant international dimension, which has affected British and Irish libraries from the Middle Ages to the present, receives due attention. Other themes considered in each volume include the housing, storage and maintenance of books and other material; the individuals responsible for their care and those who used them; developments in provision, organization and cataloguing; and the principles and attitudes - of librarians and users - which such developments reflect.
This critically annotated bibliography includes entries for over 1300 books on ecumenism published between 1950 and 1992. It also describes 85 journals devoted to ecumenism. Unlike most bibliographies, the volume offers a thorough analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of specific publications. It provides a theological and historical record of Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant ecumenical literature, and is a guide to the works of the World Council of Churches, the Second Vatican Council, and modern bilateral dialogues. The reference begins with an introductory essay that describes the various types of ecumenical publications and discusses the historical events that occasioned their production. The bibliography follows, with entries arranged in topical chapters. The first chapter includes entries for older bibliographies, encyclopedias, handbooks, and other reference works. It also overviews journals and research centers devoted to ecumenism. The next chapter contains historical accounts of the ecumenical movement. The following chapter collects accounts given by members of various Christian confessions to explain their own church's understanding of ecumenism. A chapter on bilateral and multilateral consultations follows, and a final chapter addresses specific doctrinal issues. The book concludes with detailed author, title, and subject indexes.

The chronology includes biographical information on more than 700 authors, listings of more than 2,000 works, including anthologies, criticism and essays, publishing and fandom milestones, first publications, and awards. The works are fully cross-referenced and indexed, with introductory definitions of the field and descriptive headnotes for five periods: The Descent of Scientific Romance, 1478-1894; The Wellsian Synthesis, 1895-1936; British Science Fiction, 1937-1961; New Wave S(peculative) F(iction), 1962-1978; and The British Fantastic, 1979-1990. This book is an outgrowth of and is complementary to Ruddick's critical work, Ultimate Island. Together the two works define the scope and the nature of British science fiction--an enormous field that is not, until recently, examined separately from American science fiction in spite of considerable differences.

Music in Wales has long been a neglected area. Scholars have been deterred both by the need for a knowledge of the Welsh language, and by the fact that an oral tradition in Wales persisted far later than in other parts of Britain, resulting in a limited number of sources with conventional notation. Sally Harper provides the first serious study of Welsh music before 1650 and draws on a wide range of sources in Welsh, Latin and English to illuminate early musical practice. This book challenges and refutes two widely held assumptions - that music in Wales before 1650 is impoverished and elusive, and that the extant sources are too obscure and fragmentary to warrant serious study. Harper demonstrates that there is a far wider body of source material than is generally realized, comprising liturgical manuscripts, archival materials, chronicles and retrospective histories, inventories of pieces and players, vernacular poetry and treatises. This book examines three principal areas: the unique tradition of cerdd dant (literally 'the music of the string') for harp and crwth; the Latin liturgy in Wales and its embellishment, and 'Anglicised' sacred and secular materials from c.1580, which show Welsh music mirroring English practice. Taken together, the primary material presented in this book bears witness to a flourishing and distinctive musical tradition of considerable cultural significance, aspects of which have an important impact on wider musical practice beyond Wales.
Not long after becoming public health concerns in the 1980s, HIV and AIDS were featured in a number of works of fiction, though such titles were written primarily for adult readers. Mirroring the disease's indiscriminate nature, however, the subject would soon be incorporated into novels aimed at young adults. Despite a need for accessible information on the subject, it is difficult to identify fiction that contains material about HIV/AIDS, as these books are seldom catalogued for this content, nor is this content consistently acknowledged in published reviews. In HIV/AIDS in Young Adult Novels: An Annotated Bibliography, the authors address this gap by identifying and assessing the full range of young adult novels that include HIV/AIDS content. This resource is comprised of two major parts. The first part summarizes findings from a content analysis performed on novels written for readers aged 11-19, published since 1981, and featuring at least one character with HIV/AIDS. The second part is an annotated bibliography of the more than 90 novels identified for use in the study. Each entry in the bibliography contains an annotation that summarizes the plot and how HIV/AIDS is depicted in the story, an indication of the accuracy of the HIV/AIDS content, a note on how central HIV/AIDS is to the story, and an evaluation of the literary quality of the book. This work will assist readers in collecting, choosing, evaluating, and using these works to educate readers about HIV/AIDS.
Originally published in 1976, the bibliography presented here was intended to provide a useful research tool for scholars and students of perception. The primary concentration of the authors' efforts has been on the philosophical literature during the period of 1935-1974.
A volume of selected, annotated references arranged under specific headings to provide a non-partisan guide to teachers involved in designing courses in translation and/or interpreting.
This bibliography brings together information on over 4,000 dissertations that deal wholly or in part with Irish writers and Anglo-Irish literature. Included are works from more than 350 universities and from 28 different countries, a scope of material that has not been collected in one place before. The dissertation subjects include not only poets, novelists, and dramatists, but also critics, diarists, scholars, historians, and journalists. In all, 193 authors are studied, whose lives cover the years from 1600 to the present. The book, which supersedes all previously published volumes on this subject, lists each entry under the author as subject, rather than under a topical, genre, or subject designation. Because multiple-subject entries are listed under first mentioned author, a complete see-also reference section has been included to direct users to all entries related to each author. The volume also includes a section on general and topical studies, as well as a subject index. This book will be an important reference for courses in English literature, Irish studies, and theater and drama, and an important addition to most university and college libraries.
This reference work catalogs music for organ and harpsichord written by more than 700 women composers from 40 countries. Compiler Adel Heinrich has expanded the organ and harpsichord repertoire to include choir and instruments accompanying organ and harpsichord. She provides more detailed information about each work than can be found in any other reference book on women composers. In addition to biographies for each woman, Heinrich supplies listings of individual compositions, and includes descriptions and sources whenever possible. Each composition is listed in both the Instrumentation Index and the Title Index. Publishers, library sources, and recording companies with their addresses are also provided. There is also a chronological listing of composers by country. Two appendices list a large number of women who have either written music for organ and harpsichord with no specific titles known, or have performed on one or both instruments. This reference book is a valuable resource for organists, harpsichordists, teachers, choral and instrumental conductors, and planners of festivals and recitals.

Because young adolescents have unique intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs, there has been a major push to develop strong middle level programs in American schools. This annotated bibliography is a comprehensive guide to literature and resources on middle level education in the United States. Included are more than 1,700 entries for books, articles, dissertations, government reports, newsletters, videotapes, and other materials on various aspects of middle level education. Entries are grouped in topical chapters, and each citation is accompanied by an evaluative annotation. The volume concludes with a descriptive listing of resources, such as organizations and journals. During the last decade, there has been a major push in the United States to develop strong middle level programs in American schools. The key purpose of such programs is to meet the unique intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs of young adolescents who are too old to be called children and too young to assume the responsibilities of adulthood. Effective programs are those in which the school administration actively seeks to make the middle school meet the needs of the student, rather than force the student to fit the school. While the concept of middle level education has existed since the early 1960s, it has received much attention during the last decade, due to the growth of sociological, psychological, and educational research on adolescents. This reference book is a comprehensive guide to literature and resources on middle level education. Included are more than 1,700 entries for books, articles, dissertations, newsletters, government documents, videotapes, and other publications. Entries are arranged in topical chapters, and each entry includes an evaluative annotation. The volume concludes with a descriptive list of resources, such as organizations and journals.

The series Ethiopic Manuscripts, Texts, and Studies offers, in the first place, catalogues of the Ethiopic Manuscript Imaging Project, whose purpose it is to digitize and catalogue collections of Ethiopic manuscripts in North America and around the world. Beyond this, though, the series offers a venue for monographs, revised dissertations, and texts that explore the rich historical, literary, and artistic traditions of Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. This is a catalogue of the digital collection of images produced from the first two hundred and thirty nine Ethiopic manuscripts digitised by the Ethiopic Manuscript Imaging Project (EMIP). These include 105 codices and 134 scrolls of Ethiopian spiritual healing. The codices include gospels and other scriptural texts, liturgies, missals, psalters, hymns and commentaries. Each catalogue entry is laid out in seven sections: 1. Number, name and title 2. Physical description and date (including descriptions of cases and covers) 3. List of contents 4. List of miniatures and illuminations 5. Varia 6. Notes 7. Quire maps The scrolls of spiritual healing contain prayers against diseases and natural disasters, such as epidemics and drought, and against the evil spirits that are believed to cause them. Many of the scrolls concern conditions suffered by women, such as menstruation, miscarriage and infertility. Each catalogue entry contains five elements: 1. Number, name and title 2. Physical description and date (including descriptions of cases and covers) 3. List of contents 4. List of miniatures and illuminations 5. Name of the owner A particular focus of interest of the Project is on the scribal techniques and practices in evidence within the manuscripts, and this has been emphasised in the catalogue descriptions. Along with its companion volume Ethiopian Scribal Practice 1, which includes colour images of all the codices listed, this catalogue provides an invaluable research tool for scholars and students in Ethiopian Studies. The manuscripts catalogued here constitute a resource for a wide range of studies, such as the exploration of developments of scribal and artistic practice across time, or the interconnections between common elements in manuscripts, scribal practices, scribal education, and community ideology.

Increasing literacy rates and advanced printing technology gave rise to the pulp magazine in the late 19th century. Affordable, disposable, and commercially in-demand, the fiction magazines remained popular through the mid 20th century, and are now frequently cited by researchers as culturally and historically significant documents. This work is a comprehensive index of American pulp magazines. Entries are organized alphabetically by magazine title, and offer bibliographic data including author, volume/issue numbers, dates of publication, publisher, and a brief categorization. Each entry also includes a helpful list of current library holdings, if any, among American, Canadian, and European libraries.
Containing some 1500 entries, this new bibliography will be widely welcomed for its comprehensive brief, and for the sub-section profiling principal NRMs convering history, beliefs and practices, main publications, braches worldwide and membership.
Longtime collectors of video recordings (VHS) of piano, both solo and with orchestra desire nothing more than a catalog listing only piano performances. This catalog provides the means whereby music professionals, average piano students, and piano aficionados can study piano performance in both its audio and video aspects. Part I provides information on nearly 200 piano performance videos that where personally heard by the authors. There is a brief evaluation of each video, the authors thoughts as well as the opinions of highly regarded critics in the music performance field. Part II lists supplemental video recordings containing performances by more than one pianist, as in collections, competitions, and documentaries. Part III cross-references the catalog by composer. Each composition relates to a piano performance listed in Part I or Part II. In some instances, the pianist plays only excerpts of compositions, but these musical fragments are included because they are the only VHS performances the authors could find by that particular pianist or simply because they are so representative of the pianist's style. The video recording provides an evocative look at the pianist, how he produces his particular sound, what hand position he prefers when playing a concerto, and his rapport with both orchestra and conductor. A useful tool for piano music enthusiasts, for those looking to hear piano performance, and for skilled pianists looking for new insights. |
