The Paper Museum ('Museo Cartaceo') is a collection of some 10,000 drawings and prints assembled during the seventeenth century by the Roman patron and collector, Cassiano dal Pozzo, and his younger brother, Carlo Antonio. It represents one of the most significant attempts before the age of photography to embrace human knowledge in visual form, documenting ancient art and culture, architecture and topography, natural history and social customs. The 160 drawings catalogued in this volume are derived from five ancient manuscripts: the famous Vatican Vergil, the so-called 'Roman' Vergil, the Vatican Terence, and the less well-known Palatine Agrimensores, all in the Vatican Library, and from a fifth codex, now lost, known as the Chronography or Calendar of the year 354.The bulk of the drawings were copied for Cassiano between 1632 and 1634 for the purpose of studying both the characters depicted and the allied evidence of ancient costume and artefacts. By the later seventeenth century, when Pietro Santi Bartoli executed the last group of drawings in the present volume for Carlo Antonio, manuscript illustrations had come to be cherished as much for their rarity as examples of ancient painting as for their documentary value.Introductory essays provide an overview of the dal Pozzo commissions, the manuscripts and their history down to Cassiano's day, as well as their study in the wider context of classical scholarship through to the eighteenth century. All the drawings are reproduced in colour at full page, with accompanying descriptions of the subjects or relevant ancient verses in modern translation and brief commentaries.

Best known for his luscious paintings of pies and ice-cream cones, American artist Wayne Thiebaud (born 1920) has been an avid and prolific draftsman since he began his career in the 1940s as an illustrator and cartoonist. This book of about ninety drawings - compiled with the full cooperation of the artist to accompany a major new exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum - explores the wide range of Thiebaud's production on paper, including early sketches, luminous pastels and watercolours, and charcoal drawings made in connection with his teaching. In subjects ranging from deli counters and isolated figures to dramatic views of San Francisco's plunging streets, Thiebaud's drawings endow the most banal, everyday scenes with a sense of poetry and nostalgia. Fully illustrated and beautifully designed, with illuminating texts, including an extensive interview with the artist, Wayne Thiebaud: Draftsman is the first major publication devoted to his lifelong engagement with drawing.

Marjon Van der Meulen

Rubens was fascinated by the classical world and the exploits of the ancients celebrated on surviving sculptures, sarcophagus reliefs, engraved gems and coins. When he set out for Italy as a young artist in 1600, he was following in the footsteps of many Flemish artists before him, but Rubens drawings after the Antique have a range and thoroughness unique of their kind. They are catalogued here in detail.;Rome was the focus of Rubens' two lengthy stays in Italy, and he was particularly attracted to the private collections, where in the seclusion of the palaces and courtyards of enthusiastic collectors he could draw sculpture groups over and over in detail and from different angles. Like his brother Philip and other European collectors of their acquaintance, Rubens was a dedicated antiquarian, and his drawings were often made with specific projects in mind, like his Roman Itinerary, a planned Gem Book, and his series on Famous Greek and Roman Men. Rubens drawings of classical statues are still of great value for archaeologists, because they show the early 17th-century condition of a sculpture and they are sometimes the only record of a work of art now lost.;Rubens displays the full range and subtlety of his techniques in his response to classical art. When sketching marble statues, he tended to use black chalk on rough white paper and applied the accents in white, thus softening the contours of the stone and enhancing the gradual nuances of light and shade. He rendered the tauter contours and high gloss of bronzes and engraved gems by exploiting the very different properties of pen and ink. His capacity to bring life to the artefacts he drew can be seen by contrast with the many copies of his sketches that exist.;Made as they are largely at the beginning of his career, Rubens's drawings after the Antique are evidence of his determination to master models before proceeding to draw figures from life. All that he learnt from his classical models of physique, pose and composition, Rubens transformed into a personal expression that informs the gestures, costume and decoration in paintings throughout his life.

This book analyzes the fundamental aspects of graphically depicting a wide variety of jewelry. The relationships of volume, balance between full and empty, treatment of metal surfaces, warm and cool materials and the relationship between the support and the stone are explained in depth along with ways to illuminate jewelry, treatment of light and chiaroscuro play to add depth. The book begins with simple geometric structures and moves on to explore more complex forms through a range of distortions and multiplications. The goal is not to show finished pieces of jewelry but to provide the tools that will enable readers to acquire a work method that allows them to represent their ideas effectively. From orthogonal and axonometric projections to techniques (watercolor, tempera, ink, mixed technique) and different possible supports, readers will find a source of inspiration for developing their own designs. Rings, tiaras, precious stones, bracelets and chains) are graphically represented in this book as if they were real, along with effects such as depth, gloss and transparency.
