Forensic scientists apply scientific analysis in a legal context and play a vital role in solving crimes. Sometimes the collection of forensic evidence is the only way to establish or exclude an association between suspect and victim or crime scene, or to establish a likely order of events. Profiting from recent scientific developments and the advancement of technological equipment, forensic science is a rapidly evolving discipline that encompasses many sciences and the law. This dictionary covers in over 1300 entries the key concepts within forensic science, including a wide array of relevant specialist terms from areas such as chemistry, biology, anthropology, art, engineering, firearms, toolmarks, trace evidence, crime scene investigation, case history, biographies of investigators and criminals, as well as forensic computing. Ranging from crime scene to fibers and fluorescence to RAM, this new dictionary is the most up-to-date of its kind and is international in scope. Entry-level web links to online resources are listed and regularly updated on a companion website, expanding the scope of the dictionary and pointing to more in-depth supplementary material. Many entries are complemented by case examples (Dr Crippen, Mary Ann Cotton, etc.), figures, and photographs, which makes this A to Z an ideal reference for students of forensic science, as well as professionals and those with an interest in forensics.
The purpose of the SANE/SAFE Forensic Workbook Series: Entry-Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment is to provide an opportunity for health care providers to learn, improve, and demonstrate competency in sexual assault evaluations of adolescents and adults. This workbook answers a pressing need for educational tools devoted to enabling those who work with sexual assault patients to recognise and understand anatomy and injury in sexual assault cases. The Entry-Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment can be used to document the competency of various health care providers, which include physicians and nurses from military, nursing, and medical schools. This is the ultimate self-study resource on sexual assault and is accredited through Saint Louis University's School of Medicine and School of Nursing to provide CME/CNE credit(s). Ten case studies help the student identify areas of weakness and strength, providing a roadmap for learning. Management will want to use Entry-Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment as a tool to evaluate competency in adolescent and adult sexual assault care for performance standards and evaluations. The workbook contains critical thinking activities and photographic references. The Entry-Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment will enhance learning for the novice and will also support the experienced examiner's skill set. Future workbooks will cover topics such as intimate partner violence, paediatric anatomy and sexual abuse, elder sexual assault, and more. Intermediate-Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment and Advanced-Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment will be added to STM Learning's library in the near future as well.

Intended as a companion to the "Fundamentals of Forensic DNA
Typing" volume published in 2009, "Advanced Topics in Forensic DNA
Typing: Methodology" contains 18 chapters with 4 appendices
providing up-to-date coverage of essential topics in this important
field and citation to more than 2800 articles and internet
resources. The book builds upon the previous two editions of John
Butler s internationally acclaimed "Forensic DNA Typing" textbook
with forensic DNA analysts as its primary audience. This book
provides the most detailed information written to-date on DNA
databases, low-level DNA, validation, and numerous other topics
including a new chapter on legal aspects of DNA testing to prepare
scientists for expert witness testimony. Over half of the content
is new compared to previous editions. A forthcoming companion
volume will cover interpretation issues.
When eighteen-year-old Gloria Summers dies unexpectedly after undergoing an elective tubal ligation at Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital, the mortality review committee can't determine what went wrong. But three more unexplained deaths of young women sends the hospital administration reeling. Desperate measures ensue, and surgical privileges are suspended. The administration hires renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Cole Buchanan to investigate these suspicious deaths. After reviewing the cases and performing additional autopsies, Buchanan determines that the deaths were murders, but he is stymied by the perpetrator's method. Detroit Police Department investigator Detective Joe Braun joins Buchanan in the murder probe; this pairing of a forensic specialist with a seasoned murder investigator provides unique insight into the case. Several possible suspects come to the forefront as the investigation focuses on the victims' backgrounds. Could the suspicious deaths be tied to the women's Catholic religion? Or is someone on the hospital staff to blame for the murders? Will Buchanan and Braun be able to unravel the mystery before more women die needlessly after surgery? As the investigation continues, friends become enemies, one involved physician commits suicide, and an old romance is rekindled within the police department.
In addition to supplementing existing analysis techniques in serious crime cases, trace DNA can allow investigation of volume crime cases such as burglary or vehicle theft, where previously DNA evidence was not considered usable. However, despite the widespread use of trace DNA, at present there are very few specific validated methods. This has lead to controversy in the use of trace DNA, and particularly the low copy number amplification technique. It has been established that the use of existing methodology (developed for high-copy number samples) leads to significant levels of artefacts with trace DNA, including allele drop-out and drop-in, stutter, and allelic/locus imbalance. To minimise these, there are numerous modifications that can be made to existed methods to increase the success of trace DNA analysis. This book presents advances in the field of DNA research as an aid in Forensic studies and Genetics.
The book includes an examination of sources of law important to
addiction and its treatment. The foundations for forensic work in
professional legal testimony is explored (e.g., legal system, case
law precedent, statutes governing addictions, civil and criminal
procedures). The science of addiction is featured including the
biology of addiction, addiction as a brain disease, responsibility
vs. loss of control, development of addictions, and the role of
genetics and environment. Drug testing, its uses with forensic
populations, what the tests show and do not show, controversies in
using tests in the general population also receives extensive
treatment. Addiction and mental illness in forensic populations is
highlighted for addiction treatment and continuing care. Case
studies and landmark cases illustrate the role of alcohol, drug
use, and addictions in legal decisions.

Over the last 22 years in the New York Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Schmuter performed thousands of autopsies and testified in courts hundreds of times. Many of these cases present interest for a general reader, especially given the attention to this profession in the last decade in movies, TV shows and fiction books. The first chapter of this book is dedicated to the evolution of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner over the last 20 years, its transformation to one of the largest and best in the world. This tale is presented throughout the prism of the author's individual experiences and closely intertwined with her professional life. It lays the foundation for the following 25 chapters of challenging cases from the author's personal experience. Many of them include captivating stories of homicide investigation with court testimonies. The truth, however, is that the crime related deaths cover fewer than 15% of all cases performed by medical examiners. This book brings up and creates public awareness of many important issues beyond the traditional topic of homicides, among them drug intoxication death, child negligence and abuse, sudden death of young people, misdiagnosis, prophylactics of sudden infant death.

The corset in eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe was a complex and often contradictory social and cultural symbol. It symbolized both the sensual female body and the chaste virgin; the female control over male desires, and the male's control over the female body. Reports of women who have died as a result of the tightness of their corsets abound in the literature. Medical case studies provide information on the changes corsets wrought in the soft tissues of the women who wore them. However, to date, no systematic studies have been conducted which detail the changes in the bony pelvis. This study examines the effect of corseting upon the female pelves of the Spitalfields skeletal collection in order to determine the changes in pelvic size and shape that may result from such practices, and the resulting change in fecundity for the individuals in question. Many historical and present day sources offer up the corset as the source of infertility, deformation, and even abortion. This book adds quantitative data on the bony changes wrought by corseting, and is adrdressed to any scholar of osteo-archaeology, women's studies or history.

Forensic science laboratories' reputations have increasingly come
under fire. Incidents of tainted evidence, false reports,
allegations of negligence, scientifically flawed testimony, or -
worse yet - perjury in in-court testimony, have all served to cast
a shadow over the forensic sciences. Instances of each are just a
few of the quality-related charges made in the last few years.

Like many viruses, smallpox is highly contagious. It's also dreadful, deadly, and thanks to microscopes and modern technology--now officially eradicated. This fascinating book explains how a concerted effort to produce a vaccine and distribute it around the world helped eliminate the deadly scourge by 1980. |
