Over the last 22 years in the New York Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Schmuter performed thousands of autopsies and testified in courts hundreds of times. The first chapter of this book is dedicated to the evolution of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner over the last 20 years, its transformation to one of the largest and best in the world. The corset in eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe was a complex and often contradictory social and cultural symbol. Many historical and present day sources offer up the corset as the source of infertility, deformation, and even abortion. Since the beginning of this century, "clusters" of certain forms of cancer--particularly leukemia in children and Hodgkin's disease--have been reported around locations of specific environmental hazards. Identification of such clusters is not an easy task, since there is no exact definition of what a cluster is. This monograph describes the variety of statististical techniques cuurently in use, and their application to simulated data-sets chosen to represent a range of clustering scenarios. The scientists who developed these techniques were invited to apply their methodology to these data-sets and to share their conclusions in this volume. In addition, these researchers describe in complete detail how they proceeded with the analysis, since an element of subjectivity figures prominently in the application and interpretation of some of these methods. Ist das Alter von unbegleiteten minderjahrigen Migrantinnen und Migranten bei der Einreise nach Deutschland nicht sicher nachweisbar, kann eine medizinische Altersschatzung angeordnet werden. Diese Dissertation analysiert zum einen, ob die medizinische Altersschatzung geeignet ist, eine Minder- oder Volljahrigkeit bei Personen nachzuweisen, die ein Alter von 16 oder 17 Jahren angeben, und zum anderen, wie diese Altersschatzung medizinethisch zu bewerten ist. Hierfur wurden die von der Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Forensische Altersdiagnostik der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Rechtsmedizin derzeit empfohlenen Methoden (koerperliche Untersuchung, Roentgenuntersuchung der Hand, der Weisheitszahne, der Schlusselbeine) auf ihre Aussagekraft hin untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden auf Basis der vier medizinethischen Prinzipien von Beauchamp und Childress (Wohltun, Nicht-Schaden, Gerechtigkeit und Respekt vor der Autonomie) diskutiert. Es zeigt sich, dass keine der genannten Untersuchungsmethoden geeignet ist, bei einem angegebenen Alter von 16 oder 17 Jahren sicher eine Minder- oder Volljahrigkeit nachzuweisen oder auszuschliessen. Zudem sind diese Untersuchungen aus medizinethischer Perspektive in vielerlei Hinsicht problematisch, sodass die medizinische Altersschatzung in der ubergrossen Mehrheit der Falle derzeit aus ethischen Grunden nicht zu rechtfertigen ist.

Dieses Arbeitsbuch zur medizinischen Ethik ist entstanden auf dem Hintergrund der langjiihrigen Bemuhungen von Prof. Dr. med. E. Wegweisend waren v. a. die Publikationen und Aktivi- tiiten des bisher einzigen Lehrstuhlinhabers fUr medizinische Ethik, Prof. Dr. P. Sporken in Maastricht (Niederlande). Wichtig war auch die intensive Beschiiftigung mit diesem Gegenstand, die aus den bioethischen Zentren der USA, wie dem Hastings Center of Bioethics, Hastings-on-Hudson, und dem Kennedy Institute of Bioethics, Washington, D. c., bekannt geworden waren.
