Tales of Forensic Pathologist (Paperback): Zoya Schmuter Tales of Forensic Pathologist (Paperback)
Zoya Schmuter
R381 R355 Discovery Miles 3 550 Save R26 (7%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Over the last 22 years in the New York Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Schmuter performed thousands of autopsies and testified in courts hundreds of times. Many of these cases present interest for a general reader, especially given the attention to this profession in the last decade in movies, TV shows and fiction books.

The first chapter of this book is dedicated to the evolution of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner over the last 20 years, its transformation to one of the largest and best in the world. This tale is presented throughout the prism of the author's individual experiences and closely intertwined with her professional life. It lays the foundation for the following 25 chapters of challenging cases from the author's personal experience. Many of them include captivating stories of homicide investigation with court testimonies. The truth, however, is that the crime related deaths cover fewer than 15% of all cases performed by medical examiners. This book brings up and creates public awareness of many important issues beyond the traditional topic of homicides, among them drug intoxication death, child negligence and abuse, sudden death of young people, misdiagnosis, prophylactics of sudden infant death.

The corset in eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe was a complex and often contradictory social and cultural symbol. It symbolized both the sensual female body and the chaste virgin; the female control over male desires, and the male's control over the female body. Reports of women who have died as a result of the tightness of their corsets abound in the literature. Medical case studies provide information on the changes corsets wrought in the soft tissues of the women who wore them. However, to date, no systematic studies have been conducted which detail the changes in the bony pelvis. This study examines the effect of corseting upon the female pelves of the Spitalfields skeletal collection in order to determine the changes in pelvic size and shape that may result from such practices, and the resulting change in fecundity for the individuals in question. Many historical and present day sources offer up the corset as the source of infertility, deformation, and even abortion. This book adds quantitative data on the bony changes wrought by corseting, and is adrdressed to any scholar of osteo-archaeology, women's studies or history.

The Menace of Atomic Energy (Paperback, Revised Edition): Ralph Nader, John Abbotts The Menace of Atomic Energy (Paperback, Revised Edition)
Ralph Nader, John Abbotts
R683 R646 Discovery Miles 6 460 Save R37 (5%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book, Ralph Nader and John Abbotts replace the myth of nuclear energy with a clear description of the technology and its attendant perils. They analyze the performance of the atomic energy industry as it affects workers, consumers, taxpayers, and future generations. They take the reader step by step through the political thicket of atomic energy from the local community level to international relations. Decisions now being made about nuclear power will have far-reaching effects upon our economy, our institutions, and our freedom. Above all, this book emphasizes that such choices must not be left only to experts and politicians. This is both a chilling and a hopeful book, one for readers who want to be informed as well as for those who want to get involved. It is a book of solutions. Alternative energy sources-safer, cheaper-are discussed, as are the efforts of citizens' groups around the country to explore these possibilities. For the paperback edition, the authors have revised and expanded the chapter "Challenging Electric Utilities," the list of information sources, and the notes, and have added a chapter detailing new developments.

Louis-Charles, Duc de Normandie, enjoyed a charmed early childhood in the gilded palace of Versailles. At the age of four, he became the dauphin, heir to the most powerful throne in Europe. Yet within five years he was to lose everything. Drawn into the horror of the French Revolution, his family was incarcerated and their fate thrust into the hands of the revolutionaries who wished to destroy the monarchy.

In 1793, when Marie Antoinette was beheaded at the guillotine, she left her adored eight-year-old son imprisoned in the Temple Tower. Far from inheriting a throne, the orphaned boy-king had to endure the hostility and abuse of a nation. Two years later, the revolutionary leaders declared Louis XVII dead. No grave was dug, no monument built to mark his passing.

Immediately, rumors spread that the prince had, in fact, escaped from prison and was still alive. Others believed that he had been murdered, his heart cut out and preserved as a relic. As with the tragedies of England's princes in the Tower and the Romanov archduchess Anastasia, countless "brothers" soon approached Louis-Charles's older sister, Marie-Therese, who survived the revolution. They claimed not only the dauphin's name, but also his inheritance. Several "princes" were plausible, but which, if any, was the real heir to the French throne?

The Lost King of France is a moving and dramatic tale that interweaves a pivotal moment in France's history with a compelling detective story that involves pretenders to the crown, royalist plots and palace intrigue, bizarre legal battles, and modern science. The quest for the truth continued into the twenty-first century, when, thanks to DNA testing, the strange odyssey of a stolen heart found within the royal tombs brought an exciting conclusion to the two-hundred-year-old mystery of the lost king of France.

Corpse - Nature, Forensics, And The Struggle To Pinpoint Time Of Death (Paperback): Jessica Sachs Corpse - Nature, Forensics, And The Struggle To Pinpoint Time Of Death (Paperback)
Jessica Sachs
R691 Discovery Miles 6 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

When detectives come upon a murder victim, there's one thing they want to know above all else: When did the victim die? The answer can narrow a group of suspects, make or break an alibi, even assign a name to an unidentified body. But outside the fictional world of murder mysteries, time-of-death determinations have remained infamously elusive, bedeviling criminal investigators throughout history. Armed with an array of high-tech devices and tests, the world's best forensic pathologists are doing their best to shift the balance, but as Jessica Snyder Sachs demonstrates so eloquently in Corpse, this is a case in which nature might just trump technology: Plants, chemicals, and insects found near the body are turning out to be the fiercest weapons in our crime-fighting arsenal. In this highly original book, Sachs accompanies an eccentric group of entomologists, anthropologists, biochemists, and botanists--a new kind of biological "Mod Squad"--on some of their grisliest, most intractable cases. She also takes us into the courtroom, where "post-O.J." forensic science as a whole is coming under fire and the new multidisciplinary art of forensic ecology is struggling to establish its credibility. Corpse is the fascinating story of the 2000year search to pinpoint time of death. It is also the terrible and beautiful story of what happens to our bodies when we die.

R1,053 Discovery Miles 10 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since the beginning of this century, "clusters" of certain forms of cancer--particularly leukemia in children and Hodgkin's disease--have been reported around locations of specific environmental hazards. Identification of such clusters is not an easy task, since there is no exact definition of what a cluster is. This monograph describes the variety of statististical techniques cuurently in use, and their application to simulated data-sets chosen to represent a range of clustering scenarios. The scientists who developed these techniques were invited to apply their methodology to these data-sets and to share their conclusions in this volume. In addition, these researchers describe in complete detail how they proceeded with the analysis, since an element of subjectivity figures prominently in the application and interpretation of some of these methods. The identification and analysis of disease clusters can yield significant clues in epidemiologic research, and as such will continue to be an important subject of cancer research and epidemiology for the foreseeable future.

Forensic Mental Health Nursing - Current Approaches (Paperback): C Chaloner Forensic Mental Health Nursing - Current Approaches (Paperback)
C Chaloner
R2,001 Discovery Miles 20 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Forensic Mental Health Nursing" illustrates contemporary forensic mental health nursing practice within and beyond secure clinical environments.

This multi-authored book demonstrates the evolution of the nurse's role from its in-patient, secure-services origins to the diverse sub-specialism of mental health nursing that exists today. Specific practice-based issues, such as the care and management of sex offenders and personality disordered individuals, are addressed, together with an exploration of topics including the skills and knowledge base of forensic mental health nursing, the development of the forensic nurse's role and the challenges of community services provision. Individual chapters are devoted to issues such as psychosocial interventions, the assessment and management of risk, diversion from the Criminal Justice System, ethnicity and the ethical aspects of practice.

This book will be of interest to forensic mental health nurses, those who may be contemplating a career in this area, and to members of the other professional groups involved in the management and provision of care and treatment within forensic mental health settings. It will provide a primary resource text for students studying in this area.

R1,943 Discovery Miles 19 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Khaled Fahmy
R1,209 Discovery Miles 12 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In Quest of Justice provides the first full account of the establishment and workings of a new kind of state in Egypt in the modern period. Drawing on groundbreaking research in the Egyptian archives, this highly original book shows how the state affected those subject to it and their response. Illustrating how shari'a was actually implemented, how criminal justice functioned, and how scientific-medical knowledges and practices were introduced, Khaled Fahmy offers exciting new interpretations that are neither colonial nor nationalist. Moreover he shows how lower-class Egyptians did not see modern practices that fused medical and legal purposes in new ways as contrary to Islam. This is a major contribution to our understanding of Islam and modernity.

Chidi Oguamanam
R2,822 Discovery Miles 28 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When the oral history of a medicinal plant as a genetic resource is used to develop a blockbuster drug, how is the contribution of indigenous peoples recognized in research and commercialization? What other ethical, legal, and policy issues come into play? Is it accurate for countries to self-identify as users or providers of genetic resources? This edited collection, which focuses on Canada, is the result of research conducted in partnership with indigenous peoples in that country, where melting permafrost and new sea lanes have opened the region's biodiversity, underscoring Canada's status as a user and provider of genetic resources and associated indigenous knowledge. This work is an important resource for scholars, corporations, indigenous peoples, policymakers, and concerned citizens as Canada and other countries take on the implementation of Access and Benefit Sharing policies over genetic resources and associated indigenous knowledge. This book is also available as Open Access.
