Images play an outstanding role in the transfer of knowledge. They are used in numerous academic disciplines to present scientific results. Digital tools such as Adobe Photoshop make it possible to display the information in images brilliantly and clearly - at the same time the line between appropriate and inappropriate manipulation is not always easy to draw. Scientific journals have published guidelines for handling and editing images, but they are not always specific enough to provide clarity for all situations. "Shaping Images" examines how scholars from biology, information science, art history and design deal with this uncertainty - how they process and manipulate images, where they see their special potential and how they draw the line between appropriate and inappropriate image manipulation. The work also looks at scientific journals and lets selected editors have their say: What would have to happen to make it possible to combat image manipulation in science more effectively? The book's interdisciplinary approach makes it clear how different the practices are and how different the views are on what should be allowed in the processing of images. Images - this too is problematized in the book - are always a means to a certain end, which is precisely why the handling of images should be thoroughly reflected upon.

The second edition of the "Concise Dictionary of Library and Information Science" is an international, comprehensive introduction to the vocabulary of library and information science. The health of scientific enterprise has become a critical political and social issue as nation states tackle austerity, diversity, global challenges, whilst simultaneously supporting a competitive and innovative national economy. A key asset in achieving such ambitions is for a scholarly information system which enables the fruits of the research effort to be disseminated efficiently. As the information support system struggles with adapting from a print-based to a digital process, the dysfunctionality current within STEM publishing in particular becomes evident. New ways of supporting research are emerging which require a new approach to publishing, an approach which takes on board the many demographic, social, technical and administrative changes taking place in both science itself and society. A radical strategic assessment is required and this book tracks key aspects required for any new future strategy. This book provides a catalogue of issues to which a future STEM information industry will need to adapt. They range from the effects of technology on the neurological processes of research to the growing use of technology to speed up the exchange of information among groups and collaboratories; from considerations about quality control yet maintaining intellectual ownership; from changing from an elitist STEM system favouring academics to a more democratic process with wider appeal. There is the neglected non-academic market and its need to share in the results of the research effort, often through partnership and being part of a 'hive mind'. This is the large world of the unaffiliated knowledge workers, of which academia is numerically but a small part. The many changes taking place in scholarly information dictate that the future is unlikely to be a smooth and gradual evolution from the past. Radical new approaches are required, a revolution which takes on board the perfect storm of changes listed in this book. Just as such changes have changed the face of industries such as music and retail in recent years, so similar dramatic changes are likely to result in a restructuring of STEM into a more technologically-focused industry within the next decade. Originally published in 1976, this publication falls into three parts: The Verbal Index, The Word Frequency Table, and The Field of Reference. A scholar interested in the full range of connotation for the word heart in Conrad would look first to the word frequency table to see how often the word in question occurs in Lord Jim. If the word is indeed part of the vocabulary of the novel, he then would turn to its alphabetical listing in the verbal index and the line numbers in which it appears. Then turning to the field of reference, he could locate the lines cited and look at each occurrence of the word in context. The authors feel that the data provided by these tables is of basic importance to both the editor and the literary critic.
Strategic Conspiracy Narratives proposes an innovative semiotic perspective for analysing how contemporary conspiracy theories are used for shaping interpretation paths and identities of a targeted audience. Conspiracy theories play a significant role in the viral spread of misinformation that has an impact on the formation of public opinion about certain topics. This book was written by Valerii Leonov, Director of the Academy of Sciences in St.Petersburg. In February 1988 the Academy of Sciences was hit by the worst library fire of the century. Using memoirs, documents, newspaper reports and the personal testimony of those involved, Leonov has meticulously reconstructed events surrounding the fire, the huge clean-up operation and the climate of mistrust and back-stabbing which developed amongst library staff in the wake of the disaster. These events culminated in an accusation of illegalities levelled at Leonov himself, a charge of which he has since been full exonerated.
