Describing Archival Materials - The Use of the MARC AMC Format (Hardcover): Richard Smiraglia Describing Archival Materials - The Use of the MARC AMC Format (Hardcover)
Richard Smiraglia
R1,244 Discovery Miles 12 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Here is an informative new volume that celebrates the increasing use and influence of the MARC format for Archives and Manuscript Control (AMC). As the format and its companion, the online archival catalog, gain acceptance among archivists, several major issues evolve, including the adoption and adaptation of standards for archival control data and the acceptance of archival control techniques for use in library collections. This is an important volume for library cataloguers, who in order to make use of the archival control techniques embodied in the AMC format must be familiar with basic techniques of archival collections management, and archivists, who might need basic instruction in relevant library cataloging techniques.Describing Archival Materials presents the principles and techniques that describe the control of both textual and non-textual materials. Each chapter, where appropriate, contains examples of AMC records to illustrate various techniques. In examining control of textual materials, the authors: outline the requisite details of archival description, including the construction of finding aids and the representation of archival collections in catalogs according to the recognized standard, APPM explain the concepts of intellectual responsibility and the basic concepts of choice and formulation of access points, derived directly from AACR2 provide an archival translation of basic indexing concepts such as subject analysis and indexing depth, all written within the context of LCSH explore the concepts of authority control of both names and subjects consider design issues that contributed to the construction of the format and focus on appropriate methods of content designation for archival descriptions discuss the development of archival information systems, in particular focusing on archival management features and problems inherent in attempts to design systems that integrate archival and bibliographic recordsThree chapters also highlight archival control of nontextual materials--visual images (photographs and films), sound recordings, and cartographic materials.

Ghosts of Archive - Deconstructive Intersectionality and Praxis (Hardcover): Verne Harris Ghosts of Archive - Deconstructive Intersectionality and Praxis (Hardcover)
Verne Harris
R4,135 Discovery Miles 41 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ghosts of Archive draws on the discourses of deconstruction, intersectionality and archetypal psychology to mount an argument that archive is fundamentally and structurally spectral and that the work of archive is justice. Drawing on more than 20 years of the author's research on deconstruction and archive, the book posits archive as an essential resource for social justice activism and as a source, or location, of soul for individuals and communities. Through explorations of what Jacques Derrida termed 'hauntology', Harris invites a listening to the call for justice in conceptual spaces that are non-disciplinary. He argues that archive is both constructed in relation to and beset by ghosts - ghosts of the living, of the dead and of those not yet born - and that attention should be paid to them. Establishing a unique nexus between a deconstructive intersectionality and traditions of 'memory for justice' in struggles against oppression from South Africa and elsewhere, the book makes a case for a deconstructive praxis in today's archive. Offering new ideas about spectrality, banditry and archival activism, Ghosts of Archive should appeal to those working in the disciplines of archival science, information studies and psychology. It should also be essential reading for those with an interest in social justice issues, transitional justice, history, philosophy, memory studies and postcolonial studies.

Machine Learning Methods for Stylometry - Authorship Attribution and Author Profiling (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Jacques Savoy Machine Learning Methods for Stylometry - Authorship Attribution and Author Profiling (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Jacques Savoy
R4,522 Discovery Miles 45 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents methods and approaches used to identify the true author of a doubtful document or text excerpt. It provides a broad introduction to all text categorization problems (like authorship attribution, psychological traits of the author, detecting fake news, etc.) grounded in stylistic features. Specifically, machine learning models as valuable tools for verifying hypotheses or revealing significant patterns hidden in datasets are presented in detail. Stylometry is a multi-disciplinary field combining linguistics with both statistics and computer science. The content is divided into three parts. The first, which consists of the first three chapters, offers a general introduction to stylometry, its potential applications and limitations. Further, it introduces the ongoing example used to illustrate the concepts discussed throughout the remainder of the book. The four chapters of the second part are more devoted to computer science with a focus on machine learning models. Their main aim is to explain machine learning models for solving stylometric problems. Several general strategies used to identify, extract, select, and represent stylistic markers are explained. As deep learning represents an active field of research, information on neural network models and word embeddings applied to stylometry is provided, as well as a general introduction to the deep learning approach to solving stylometric questions. In turn, the third part illustrates the application of the previously discussed approaches in real cases: an authorship attribution problem, seeking to discover the secret hand behind the nom de plume Elena Ferrante, an Italian writer known worldwide for her My Brilliant Friend's saga; author profiling in order to identify whether a set of tweets were generated by a bot or a human being and in this second case, whether it is a man or a woman; and an exploration of stylistic variations over time using US political speeches covering a period of ca. 230 years. A solutions-based approach is adopted throughout the book, and explanations are supported by examples written in R. To complement the main content and discussions on stylometric models and techniques, examples and datasets are freely available at the author's Github website.

Prudence W. Dalrymple, Brian Galvin
R3,273 Discovery Miles 32 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The capacity to understand and communicate health information is a major international health concern. Sponsored by the Health and Biosciences Section of International Federation of Library Associations, this book highlights the contribution that librarians are making to improving health literacy and enabling citizens to be active participants in the management of their own health. Knowledge is power and the World Health Organization recognizes that health literacy, involving effective access to and understanding of health information, is essential to health and well-being in society by empowering and enabling citizens to participate in their own healthcare. The book presents inspiring studies from an international group of authors showing how libraries and librarians are partnering with diverse sectors of society including universities, hospitals, public health clinics, community-based organisations, voluntary bodies and government agencies, to help citizens understand and manage their health. It provides guidance by example to suggest how libraries can help citizens participate in their healthcare and their communities by collaborating with others to increase health literacy in society.

Archives of Library Research from the Molesworth Institute (Hardcover): Peter Gellatly, Norman D. Stevens Archives of Library Research from the Molesworth Institute (Hardcover)
Peter Gellatly, Norman D. Stevens
R4,128 Discovery Miles 41 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An anthology of library humor by the director of the mythical Molesworth Institute, Norman Stevens, this book is sure to provide librarians with many hours of amusement. This collection is full of Stevens'most memorable papers describing the odd kinds of research conducted by the Institute, such as a sophisticated study of the disappearance of umbrellas in libraries, a computer analysis of library postcards, and a "precostretrieval" scheme to accelerate the disintegration of book pages while saving the letters in them. Archives of Library Research from the Molesworth Institute is also well-stocked with unforgettable one-liners, such as the author's "plan to solve a major space problem for libraries by microfilming all Braille books."The imaginary Molesworth Institute has taken on a life of its own since its story first appeared in the ALA Bulletin in 1963. Stevens writes mostly for fun and entertainment, but also to stress the point that librarians should take a less serious view of their work. After all, as Stevens points out in this anthology, "The library world, like the real world, [is] impossible to understand on a rational basis." Now librarians can enjoy the convenience of having Stevens'most treasured papers--spanning over two decades--all in one very funny book.
