Today, it is widely recognized that in order to meet environmental
challenges, it will not simply be enough to make our lifestyles
greener ; also critical is putting an end to the modern conception
of the human as master and possessor of nature. However, to bear
fruit, this change in anthropology must also be accompanied by a
revision in our conception of technology. Since the Enlightenment
and the development of industrialization, technology no longer
seems to be subject to the guiding principles set by the Greeks:
prudence and the search for the right measure in all, which leads
to the care of beings and the world. Care in Technology analyzes
the historical changes that have led technology to become an
unthinkable part of care, and care an unthinkable part of
technology. It also establishes the conditions for care to once
again become a regulatory principle of the activity of engineers
who design technology.

Thorstein Veblen's groundbreaking treatise upon the evolution of
the affluent classes of society traces the development of
conspicuous consumption from the feudal Middle Ages to the end of
the 19th century. Beginning with the end of the Dark Ages, Veblen
examines the evolution of the hierarchical social structures. How
they incrementally evolved and influenced the overall picture of
human society is discussed. Veblen believed that the human social
order was immensely unequal and stratified, to the point where vast
amounts of merit are consequently ignored and wasted. Veblen draws
comparisons between industrialization and the advancement of
production and the exploitation and domination of labor, which he
considered analogous to a barbarian conquest happening from within
society. The heavier and harder labor falls to the lower members of
the order, while the light work is accomplished by the owners of
capital: the leisure class.
In 1964 a Chinese rice breeder, Yuan Longping, discovered a rice
plant that was the genetic key to the successful development of
high yielding hybrid rice. At that time, China was a secretive
communist state where self pollinating varietal rice was grown on
collective farms using highly labor intensive practices. Forty
years later, by 2004, hybrid rice, based on Yuan's work, was being
grown commercially in the United States using mechanized farming
practices. This book describes the journey across those four
decades and the chain of events and people which resulted in
technical success in China by 1976 and in the United States by
2000. Extraordinary political and technological developments
occurred during this time and the book describes these and the many
serendipitous events and people of different backgrounds that were
involved in the successful journey. It is estimated that hybrid
rice is now (2017) saving the US rice industry as much as $100
million each year.
