This book is the perfect antidote to the stress of life in the 21st
Century. It portrays the idyll of life in an 1850s village, "far
from the sound of the train's whistle". The identity of the village
was lost to the world for 150 years, and only by a miracle does
this magical set of stereoscopic views survive, brought together
for the very first time by Brian May and his co-author,
photohistorian Elena Vidal. Their research is amazingly in-depth,
but the book is utterly readable, and the pictures leap into
glorious 3-D, viewed in the new focussing stereoscope which May has
designed and produced, to bring the stereos to life, and then fold
neatly into the slip-case of the book. The book gives an
extraordinary insight into everyday village life at the time - with
a woman at her spinning wheel, the blacksmith outside his smithy,
three men at the grind stone sharpening a tool, the villagers in
the fields, bringing in the harvest as well as often taking time to
enjoy a good gossip. In every case the original verse which
accompanied the view is reproduced. In addition, May and Vidal have
researched and annotated all the views, revealing another layer of
meaning, by exploring the history of these real characters, this
idyllic village and its links with the present day. The result is a
powerfully atmospheric and touching set of photographs." A Village
Lost and Found brings master pioneering stereographer T. R.
Williams's passionate life-work Scenes in Our Village to a new
audience - in glorious 3-D, as never before. For an Electronic

In his expansive history of documentary work in the South during
the twentieth-century, Scott L. Matthews examines the motivations
and methodologies of several pivotal documentarians, including
sociologist Howard Odum, photographers Jack Delano and Danny Lyon,
and music ethnographer John Cohen. Their work salvaged and
celebrated folk cultures threatened by modernization or strived to
reveal and reform problems linked to region's racial caste system
and exploitative agricultural economy. Images of alluring
primitivism and troubling pathology often blurred together,
neutralizing the aims of documentary work carried out in the name
of reform during the Progressive era, New Deal, and Civil Rights
Movement. Black and white southerners in turn often resisted
documentarians' attempts to turn their private lives into public
symbols. The accumulation of these influential and, occasionally,
controversial, documentary images created an enduring, complex, and
sometimes self-defeating mythology about the South that persists
into the twenty-first century.
Successful audio-visual presentations are the result of careful
management by--as well as creative collaboration between--the
client and the professional communications firm. Because of their
high visibility within the corporation, presentations risk falling
prey to script by committee unless there is a clear plan at hand
for managing the project. Executives who find themselves
responsible for a presentation need to be fully aware of what
audio-visual can and cannot do--and how to go about getting it done
right. In this how-to guide for corporate executives, author
Richard Worth covers every step of the process in sequence, from
determining objectives to preparing for production and
post-production. While the emphasis is on working with an
audio-visual professional, Worth also includes do-it-yourself tips
for readers who want to keep the project in-house.
Selecting slides, video, film or multimedia is one of the first
choices to make. This decision, like others that follow, should be
based on a determination of purpose, audience and message. Worth
provides easy-to-follow worksheets to help get the planning process
going. Readers looking for budget guidelines will learn how much
money they will need to invest to get the presentations they want.
And, to help readers select the communications professional they
will be working with, Worth offers down-to-earth advice based on
his years of practical experience. In non-technical language, he
critiques and analyzes samples of script proposals and treatments,
providing valuable insight into the creative process. Any executive
or manager responsible for sales, training, public relations,
fund-raising, employee relations, or recruitment will find this a
valuable resource for planning and implementing effective
presentations.
In the middle years of the Great Depression, Erskine Caldwell and
photographer Margaret Bourke-White spent eighteen months traveling
across the back roads of the Deep South-from South Carolina to
Arkansas-to document the living conditions of the sharecropper.
Their collaboration resulted in You Have Seen Their Faces, a
graphic portrayal of America's desperately poor rural underclass.
First published in 1937, it is a classic comparable to Jacob Riis's
How the Other Half Lives and James Agee and Walker Evans's Let Us
Now Praise Famous Men, which it preceded by more than three years.
Caldwell lets the poor speak for themselves. Supported by his
commentary, they tell how the tenant system exploited whites and
blacks alike and fostered animosity between them. Bourke-White, who
sometimes waited hours for the right moment, captures her subjects
in the shacks where they lived, the depleted fields where they
plowed, and the churches where they worshipped.
Tutorial in nature, this book is based on a series of papers
presented at a workshop in Japan. It constitutes the first
single-volume guide to the basic methods of analyzing microstrip
patch antennas, and the characteristics of rectangular, circular
and arbitrarily shaped patch antennas. Supported by 273 equations,
tables and illustrations this book should prove a useful tool for
anyone doing applied research in antennas.
This comprehensive bibliography is the first to catalog, describe,
and index the vast body of TV, video, and film materials dealing
with John F. Kennedy's assassination. This guide to the first
newsreels, and later films and documentaries, TV programs, videos,
and little-known materials is organized for the most part
chronologically and by genre of work. This research guide points
also to North American and United Kingdom film libraries and
archives and provides a short list of key sources of printed
materials. The appendix and indexes to titles; TV stations and
production companies; interviewers and witnesses; and presenters,
reporters, and narrators make the bibliography easily accessible
for those studying JFK, modern history, political science, and
sociology.
With a focus on the settler societies of the United States and
Australia, Photography and Landscape is a new critical account of
landscape photography created through a unique collaboration
between a photography writer and a landscape photographer.
Beginning with the frontier days of the American West, the
subsequent century-long popularity of landscape photography is
exemplified by images from Carleton Watkins to Ansel Adams, the New
Topographics to Richard Misrach, all of whose works are considered
here. Along with discussions of other contemporary photographers,
this extensively illustrated volume demonstrates the influence of
settler societies on landscape photography, in which skilled
photographers captured the fascination with and the appeal of the
land and its expanse. The latest installment in Intellect's
Critical Photography series, Photography and Landscape is a
visually striking introduction to one of the most important modes
of photography.

No other book available covers the topic of videocassette
acquisitions so completely. This professional reference gives
special attention to problems unique to cataloging videocassettes
within the electronic, on-line cataloging environment. The text
provides ample theoretical discussion, along with practical
examples of a variety of solutions. Video acquisitions is one the
most difficult tasks confronting any library today. Knowing and
deciding what to buy and from whom, keeping track of orders,
verifying titles, returning damaged and incorrectly shipped
products, dealing with company representatives, obtaining
discounts, and purchasing public performance rights are only some
of the formidable decisions video librarians must make. This
professional reference is a detailed guide to video acquisitions
and cataloging. Throughout the work, emphasis is placed on the
problems and concerns of acquisitions and cataloging within the
electronic, on-line environment of today's library. The text
provides ample theoretical discussion, along with practical
examples and illustrations of solutions to the problems faced by
video librarians.
As well as updating the manifesto for an audio photography
technology and practice, this book addresses issues in design
history, the social shaping of technology and the management of
innovation. In particular, it reveals the very different timescales
over which design and innovation operate, and the way in which
design ideas evolve across different research groups, companies and
application areas. The capture of photographs with sound is a
simple idea, proposed 10 years ago, that has still not become
widespread. In this new edition of the seminal 2004 book on Audio
photography, the author asks "Why?" A journey through the book's
citations and related commercial products shows considerable
progress in understanding the role of sound in photography, and
myriad design experiments to support audio visual storytelling as a
new media form. The book is a story in itself about the "long nose
of innovation", and a lesson about the need for patience and
persistence in the computer industry. To reinforce this point five
of the 2004 chapters are re-published in their original form. These
describe invariant properties of ambient musical, talking and
conversational photographs, and the possibility of playback from
paper as well as screen. Fast Design, Slow Innovation will be of
interest to researchers and designers of new media systems and
experiences, and to innovation scholars or managers looking for a
ten year case study of innovation in action.
Sound-On-Film contains interviews with 27 prominent men and
women who discuss their careers and the art and craft of film
sound. These sound creators represent many of the crafts working in
film sound, including production sound, sound editing, sound
design, automatic dialogue replacement (ADR), Foley, re-recording
mixing, and sound engineering. The interviews are presented in an
order that attempts to give the reader a historical perspective on
the development of film sound from the studio era to contemporary
productions.
The interviews explore how sound creates an aural look to the
film in the same way that production design and cinematography
creates a visual look to a film. The discussions focus on the
relationship with renowned Hollywood film directors and how sound
was conceived and executed for specific films. Among the highly
acclaimed and seminal films discussed are "Star WarS," "Nashville,"
"The Conversation," "Apocalypse NoW," "Raging Bull," and
"Terminator 2." In addition to the interviews, the book contains
biographical background and a selected filmography of each sound
creator as well as a glossary of terms and a bibliography for
further study. It is essential reading for film students, academic
scholars and film educators as well as industry professionals and
moviegoers who want to understand the aesthetic and technical role
of those who work in film sound.

The 1861 collaboration between physicist James Clerk Maxwell and
photographer Thomas Sutton was a landmark episode in the history of
optics and photography, resulting in the famous "Tartan ribbon"
image: the first permanent color photograph in history. This
focused and incisive study from Maxwell scholar Jordi Cat
reassesses this partnership, situating it within the histories of
objectivity, experiment, and collaboration. Cat reveals that
Maxwell and Sutton were closer to true partners than has commonly
been assumed, and shows how their experiments illuminate the role
of Victorian technology, representational practices, and modes of
participation in Maxwell's natural philosophy.

Subtitling serves two purposes: to translate the dialogue of
foreign language films for secondary audiences (interlingual) and
to transform the soundtrack of television programmes into written
captions for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers (intralingual). While
both practices have strong linguistic roots, often being compared
to text translation and editing, this book reveals the complex
influences arising from the audiovisual environment. Far from being
simply a matter of linguistic equivalence, the authors show how the
effectiveness of subtitles is crucially dependent upon the hidden
semiotic relations between text and image; relations which affect
the meaning of the visual-linguistic message and the way in which
that message is ultimately received. Focusing primarily on
intralingual subtitling, The Semiotics of Subtitling adopts a
holistic approach, combining linguistic theory with empirical
eye-movement analysis in order to explore the full depth of the
medium and the reading behaviour of viewers.
