Mechanochemical Organic Synthesis (Hardcover): Davor Margetic, Vjekoslav Strukil Mechanochemical Organic Synthesis (Hardcover)
Davor Margetic, Vjekoslav Strukil
R5,290 R4,657 Discovery Miles 46 570 Save R633 (12%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mechanochemical Organic Synthesis is a comprehensive reference that not only synthesizes the current literature but also offers practical protocols that industrial and academic scientists can immediately put to use in their daily work. Increasing interest in green chemistry has led to the development of numerous environmentally-friendly methodologies for the synthesis of organic molecules of interest. Amongst the green methodologies drawing attention, mechanochemistry is emerging as a promising method to circumvent the use of toxic solvents and reagents as well as to increase energy efficiency. The development of synthetic strategies that require less, or the minimal, amount of energy to carry out a specific reaction with optimum productivity is of vital importance for large-scale industrial production. Experimental procedures at room temperature are the mildest reaction conditions (essentially required for many temperature-sensitive organic substrates as a key step in multi-step sequence reactions) and are the core of mechanochemical organic synthesis. This green synthetic method is now emerging in a very progressive manner and until now, there is no book that reviews the recent developments in this area.

Shades of Green - Business, Regulation, and Environment (Paperback, New): Robert A. Kagan, Neil Gunningham, Dorothy Thornton Shades of Green - Business, Regulation, and Environment (Paperback, New)
Robert A. Kagan, Neil Gunningham, Dorothy Thornton
R677 Discovery Miles 6 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How much does regulation matter in shaping corporate behavior? This pathbreaking, in-depth study of fourteen pulp manufacturing mills in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand reveals that steadily tightening regulatory standards have been crucial for raising environmental performance. But while all firms have shown improvement, some have improved more than others, many going substantially beyond compliance. What explains the variation in compliance? It's not necessarily the differences in regulation in each country. Rather, variation is accounted for by the complex interaction between tightening regulations and a social license to operate (especially pressures from community and environmental activists), economic constraints, and differences in corporate environmental management style. Shades of Green provides the most extensive and systematic empirical study to date of why firms achieve the levels of environmental performance that they do.

Japanese Exports and Foreign Direct Investment - Imperfect Competition in International Markets (Paperback): Hideki Yamawaki Japanese Exports and Foreign Direct Investment - Imperfect Competition in International Markets (Paperback)
Hideki Yamawaki
R882 Discovery Miles 8 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book addresses the question of how competition takes place in international manufacturing industries. It examines patterns of rivalry among firms from different countries across national boundaries and their influences on international trade and investment. By using various data on Japanese firms in manufacturing industries from the late 1950s through the early 2000s, the first part of this book presents a series of empirical analyses that examines effects of market structure on export pricing, linkages of domestic and foreign market structures on trade performance, and patterns of oligopolistic interactions among firms from different countries in exporting. The second part of this book deals with the impact of strategic interactions on foreign direct investment. In particular, the book examines 'bunching' in foreign direct investment, strategic interactions in intra-industry cross-market foreign direct investment, and their effects on entry patterns and post-entry performance.

Spoiled Silk - The Red Mayor and the Great Paterson Textile Strike (Paperback, 1st ed): George William Shea Spoiled Silk - The Red Mayor and the Great Paterson Textile Strike (Paperback, 1st ed)
George William Shea
R936 R820 Discovery Miles 8 200 Save R116 (12%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Spoiled Silk is the story of two immigrants from the Rhineland, William Brueckmann and his wife Katherine, who started a new life in America's first industrial city, Paterson NJ, nourishing a vision of their adopted country that was never to be. Committed to a socialist dream, they struggled to improve the lot of their follow immigrants and, at the same time, to raise a family in the midst of the turbulence that surrounded them. Their efforts contributed in the long run to improved working conditions in American mills, but their dream of a socialist America was never to be realized. It was in 1913 that the workers in the Paterson textile mills, having learned that a new kind of loom would put many of them out of work went on strike against the mill owners. In desperation, they called in Big Bill Haywood and the Wobblies of the I.W.W. to help them. The Paterson authorities moved quickly to crush the strike by forbidding the strikers to hold public meetings. Alone among elected local officials, William Brueckmann, Mayor of the neighboring town of Haledon, defied the Paterson authorities and their police department and upheld the constitutional rights of the strikers by giving them a safe haven in his town. His action marked the beginning of a long and bitter struggle that brought thousands of workers to the open fields of Haledon and forced the city of Paterson to its knees. The strike is an important chapter in the history of the American labor movement. For William and Katherine Brueckmann it did not however, mark the end of their struggles. Spoiled Silk also chronicles the prejudice they had to face during the First World War and the pressures that eventually drove them to compromise with post-war America and its Good Times. It was a compromise that would bring with it a different kind of tragedy and sorrow, the death of an only son and their own drawing apart from one another. The recent interest in immigrants to America has almost overlooked the largest group of immigrants, the German Americans. Spoiled Silk is a moving story about two of them. Vividly told, Spoiled Silk brings to life the experiences of these valiant people in the early decades of the century just past.

The Design of Urban Manufacturing (Paperback): Robert N. Lane, Nina Rappaport The Design of Urban Manufacturing (Paperback)
Robert N. Lane, Nina Rappaport
R1,054 Discovery Miles 10 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

American cities are rediscovering the economic and social value of urban manufacturing. However, urban manufacturing is often invisible and poorly understood in terms of urban design, architecture, and policy. The Design of Urban Manufacturing brings a multidisciplinary approach to a new complex reality that urban manufacturing now sits squarely at the intersection of research, education, and neighborhood revitalization. Using cases studies from across North America and beyond, this book presents innovative approaches not only to the design of districts and buildings, but to the design of policy as well: the special roles that governments, local development corporations, and not-for-profit organizations all have to play in supporting manufacturing. This book presents current models for working neighborhoods where factories enable fine-grained, mixed-use communities and face-to-face contact while creatively solving the very real problems of goods movement and functional buildings. Design guidelines and policy recommendations are calibrated to different types of production districts. The Design of Urban Manufacturing is the essential resource for policy makers, designers, and students in urban design, planning, and urban and economic development.

Cotton's Renaissance - A Study in Market Innovation (Paperback): George David Smith, Timothy Curtis Jacobson Cotton's Renaissance - A Study in Market Innovation (Paperback)
George David Smith, Timothy Curtis Jacobson
R944 Discovery Miles 9 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cotton's Renaissance is an analytical and interpretive history of the responses of US cotton growers to problems of supply and demand, and of the unique public-private organization they founded to help them grow, compete, and survive in an increasingly competitive marketplace. It is a story of how cotton growers learned, after more than a century and a half of trying to manage supply, that they could actually influence demand for their commodity. The impact of that company, Cotton Incorporated, on the markets for cotton was a remarkable achievement in organizational entrepreneurship. In its 'total marketing' effort to rebuild cotton's market share, it has fostered substantial scientific, technological, and managerial improvements in the quality and performance of cotton. In doing so, it has enhanced the efficiency of not only the farmers who grow cotton, but also those who transform it into consumer goods.

Yu Shen, Shaonong Wei
R913 R699 Discovery Miles 6 990 Save R214 (23%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on the industrial manufacturing history of Shanghai over the past 100 years, this book introduces the development of Chinese design throughout the different eras of the People's Republic of China, from the planned economy stage to the later economic reforms and the opening up of the country to trade. We detail industrial-product design, packaging design, poster design, and other related subjects. The characteristics of each era are discussed in the following five sections: daily life, national image, transmission and reception, export trade, and communication and transportation. We approach each design from numerous perspectives, exploring its development as well as how it altered tastes and trends. These products were not just a symptom of change; they also answered social needs and spurred development, keeping China apace with production methods in Europe and giving ordinary citizens access to mass-produced luxuries like TVs, radios and cosmetics. The work of Shanghai designers was fundamental in turning China into the thriving economy we see today.

Ecology, Economy and State Formation in Early Modern Germany (Paperback): Paul Warde Ecology, Economy and State Formation in Early Modern Germany (Paperback)
Paul Warde
R1,200 Discovery Miles 12 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is an innovative analysis of the agrarian world and growth of government in early modern Germany through the medium of pre-industrial society's most basic material resource, wood. Paul Warde offers a regional study of south-west Germany from the late fifteenth to the early eighteenth century, demonstrating the stability of the economy and social structure through periods of demographic pressure, warfare and epidemic. He casts light on the nature of 'wood shortages' and societal response to environmental challenge, and shows how institutional responses largely based on preventing local conflict were poor at adapting to optimise the management of resources. Warde further argues for the inadequacy of models that oppose the 'market' to a 'natural economy' in understanding economic behaviour. This is a major contribution to debates about the sustainability of peasant society in early modern Europe, and to the growth of ecological approaches to history and historical geography.

Business Modeling for Life Science and Biotech Companies - Creating Value and Competitive Advantage with the Milestone Bridge... Business Modeling for Life Science and Biotech Companies - Creating Value and Competitive Advantage with the Milestone Bridge (Hardcover)
Alberto Onetti, Antonella Zucchella
R4,165 Discovery Miles 41 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most books on the biotechnology industry focus on scientific and technological challenges, ignoring the entrepreneurial and managerial complexities faced bio-entrepreneurs. The Business Models for Life Science Firms aims to fill this gap by offering managers in this rapid growth industry the tools needed to design and implement an effective business model customized for the unique needs of research intensive organizations. Onetti and Zucchella begin by unpacking the often-used 'business model' term, examining key elements of business model conceptualization and offering a three tier approach with a clear separation between the business model and strategy: focus, exploring the different activities carried out by the organization; locus, evaluating where organizational activities are centered; and modus, testing the execution of the organization's activities. The business model thus defines the unique way in which a company delivers on its promise to its customers. The theory and applications adopt a global approach, offering business cases from a variety of biotech companies around the world.

Fulvio Coltorti, Riccardo Resciniti, Annalisa Tunisini, Riccardo Varaldo
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The structure of the Italian industry is characterized by the prevailing of small sized companies and the presence of very few large companies. For a long time a shared conviction was diffused among scholars and practitioners that the strength and the safety of Italian industry were based on the industrial districts, i.e. a system of interdependent and co-localized small companies deriving their competitive power from an effective and efficient division of labor. This book stresses the idea that the new, vital and promising phenomenon for the competitiveness of the Italian industry is now that centered on the mid-sized companies and on the system of their interconnected firms that represent a constituent part of their business model. Mid-sized companies, frequently emerging from the context of an industrial district, that have grown and developed internationally thanks to an original business model that combines the advantages of both the large and the small size. These companies do represent a strong entrepreneurial force that accompanies the district force that has characterized and made famous the Italian industry worldwide. The book analyzes the business models and the strategies implemented by a number of Italian successful mid-sized companies that have registered very high growth rate in the period 2006-2008 and had then to face the dramatic changes of the economic and competitive context. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the phenomenon of the mid-sized companies is reported in the book with consequences in terms of management and industrial policies. The book is structured in three parts: the first part introduces the debate existing in literature on the role of the mid-sized companies, setting the basis for the guidelines and the interpretative framework developed in the book. The second part gives a quantitative interpretation of the phenomenon, analyzing the Italian mid-sized companies according to their competitive and financial performances. The third part of the book deeps into the details of the business models of 23 mid-sized companies focalizing on their: trajectories of growth; competitive and innovation strategies; inter-organizational network, international strategies and positioning.

Essential Manufacturing (Paperback): G. Mair Essential Manufacturing (Paperback)
G. Mair
R1,183 Discovery Miles 11 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An introduction to the manufacturing industry Essential Manufacturing provides a comprehensive introduction to the wide breadth of the manufacturing industry. There is a need for all engineering and business students to understand the importance and context of the manufacturing industry. An engineer should have a well rounded appreciation of all aspects of the industry they work in, including manufacturing. This is evidenced by professional bodies expecting all accredited engineering courses to provide students with a background that allows them to see their own specific discipline in context. Similarly, business students will often find themselves dealing in some way with manufactured products or even be directly involved in manufacturing operations management. This book will cover the full spectrum of the manufacturing industry to provide a holistic appreciation of the topic but with enough detail to be of practical use. The book begins with an introduction to the manufacturing industry, its history, and some important manufacturing concepts. The materials used in manufacturing and how they are produced are covered. This is followed by a more detailed description of the more common manufacturing processes, their application, and the types of automation used in the manufacturing industry. Consideration is then given to the important aspects of manufacturing operations management and production planning and control, work study, and manufacturing economics. How to maintain quality in the manufacturing process, including metrology, is examined and this is followed by human factors in manufacturing. Finally, a speculative look at the future of manufacturing is included. Key features: * Takes a self-contained approach. * Includes review questions. * Suitable as an introduction for more advanced study. * Satisfies the requirements of college and first and second year university engineering courses.
