The Female Brain (Paperback, 2nd edition): Cynthia L Darlington The Female Brain (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Cynthia L Darlington
R2,148 Discovery Miles 21 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first edition of The Female Brain laid the groundwork for gaining a better understanding of the female brain, examining the evidence for structural and functional differences between the brains of males and females. Addressing a wealth of new research, the second edition continues in this vein, leading readers through the basic principles of anatomy and physiology and on to the complex behavioral functions which constitute the workings of the normal and abnormal female brain. Examines Questions about Structural and Functional Differences The book addresses the question of structural and functional differences between the female brain and the male brain. Are there differences? How good is the evidence? Where do the differences lie? Are there differences in the neuroanatomy of females, and if so, where? Do females and males process information differently, and if so, how? The author puts the relative lack of information on the female brain into historical perspective and reviews empirical evidence relevant to the different aspects of brain structure and function. She elucidates laterality, the functional asymmetry of the brain, the left brain-right brain distinctions, and how they differ between females and males. A Clear Presentation and Evaluation of Medical and Scientific Evidence Filled with rigorous scientific analysis in an easily accessible format and detailed explanatory diagrams, the book systematically develops the topic from anatomy to behavior. It draws on current research to explain why men and women behave differently and why these differences should be exploited when designing research and clinical studies.

William Hunter and his Eighteenth-Century Cultural Worlds - The Anatomist and the Fine Arts (Hardcover): Helen McCormack William Hunter and his Eighteenth-Century Cultural Worlds - The Anatomist and the Fine Arts (Hardcover)
Helen McCormack
R4,063 Discovery Miles 40 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The eminent physician and anatomist Dr William Hunter (1718-1783) made an important and significant contribution to the history of collecting and the promotion of the fine arts in Britain in the eighteenth century. Born at the family home in East Calderwood, he matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1731 and was greatly influenced by some of the most important philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment, including Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746). He quickly abandoned his studies in theology for Medicine and, in 1740, left Scotland for London where he steadily acquired a reputation as an energetic and astute practitioner; he combined his working life as an anatomist successfully with a wide range of interests in natural history, including mineralogy, conchology, botany and ornithology; and in antiquities, books, medals and artefacts; in the fine arts, he worked with artists and dealers and came to own a number of beautiful oil paintings and volumes of extremely fine prints. He built an impressive school of anatomy and a museum which housed these substantial and important collections. William Hunter's life and work is the subject of this book, a cultural-anthropological account of his influence and legacy as an anatomist, physician, collector, teacher and demonstrator. Combining Hunter's lectures to students of anatomy with his teaching at the St Martin's Lane Academy, his patronage of artists, such as Robert Edge Pine, George Stubbs and Johan Zoffany, and his associations with artists at the Royal Academy of Arts, the book positions Hunter at the very centre of artistic, scientific and cultural life in London during the period, presenting a sustained and critical account of the relationship between anatomy and artists over the course of the long eighteenth century.

R5,547 Discovery Miles 55 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Understanding Human Anatomy and Pathology: An Evolutionary and Developmental Guide for Medical Students provides medical students with a much easier and more comprehensive way to learn and understand human gross anatomy by combining state-of-the-art knowledge about human anatomy, evolution, development, and pathology in one book. The book adds evolutionary, pathological, and developmental information in a way that reduces the difficulty and total time spent learning gross anatomy by making learning more logical and systematic. It also synthesizes data that would normally be available for students only by consulting several books at a time. Anatomical illustrations are carefully selected to follow the style of those seen in human anatomical atlases but are simpler in their overall configuration, making them easier to understand without overwhelming students with visual information. The book's organization is also more versatile than most human anatomy texts so that students can refer to different sections according to their own learning styles. Because it is relatively short in length and easily transportable, students can take this invaluable book anywhere and use it to understand most of the structures they need to learn for any gross anatomy course.

Calcification in Biological Systems (Hardcover): Ermanno Bonucci Calcification in Biological Systems (Hardcover)
Ermanno Bonucci
R15,526 Discovery Miles 155 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Calcification in Biological Systems provides a collection of up-to-date papers regarding calcification in a variety of biological systems. The papers are not simple reviews of the literature. Each paper reflects the personal experience of the author(s) and is rich in constructive criticism and suggestions. Topics range from basic molecular processes to general structural problems in systems as different as unicellular organisms and human skeletal tissues. Because calcification is so diffuse in the animal kingdom, this book makes no attempt to achieve a conclusive synthesis of available results and current ideas. Instead, its merit lies in its ability to be useful to investigators with different scientific backgrounds and areas of interest.

From breasts and orgasms to periods, pregnancies, and menopause-A Brief History of the Female Body is a fascinating science book explaining the mysteries of the female body through an evolutionary lens. Let's face it: The female body is an enigma. For teenagers first experiencing their periods, the monthly arrival of mood swings and cramps can be agonizing and inconvenient. With pregnancy-perhaps the most miraculous of bodily events-comes countless potential complications, including high blood pressure, diabetes, premature birth, and postpartum depression. And menopause is equally mystifying. Why do females lose their fertility over time and experience the notorious side effects-like hot flashes, weight gain, and hair loss-while males maintain their fertility forever? Evolutionary geneticist and educator Dr. Deena Emera has spent much of her career studying the evolution of female reproduction. A Brief History of the Female Body draws on her vast expertise as a biologist, her experience as a mother of four children, and her love of teaching to look far into our evolutionary past, illuminating how and, more importantly, why the female form has transformed over millions of years and its effects on women's health.

Understanding trauma. Beliefs and emotions are often only symptoms of our problems and not the cause Find out why

In Metaphysical Anatomy I wrote about diseases from A to Z, the emotional components related to those diseases as well as key points as to how to approach the condition with the intention to improve ones quality of life. Metaphysical Anatomy includes step-by-step guide for identifying the origin of the disease process, whether it be in your ancestry, conception, womb, birth or childhood. The information shared in this book is not just your average, 'oh I have seen this before' research, this is something new and unique. It will take you on a deep journey that you never once thought was possible

Metaphysical Anatomy represents the connection between mind and body. Based on the principle of "as above so below, as within so without," you can connect the dots between the health of your body and the health of your environment. Our relationships and past experiences influence our body, not in a vague or "spiritual" way, but in a concrete and deterministic way. With the skills shared in this book, you can read a body like a book.

This book is written for the benefit of therapists seeking guidance to improve their clients' quality of life. It is also easily accessible by the general public in search of answers for their own health, emotional and mental wellbeing.

This book is an invaluable reference that will support, guide and help those that have the willingness to change their lives and understand the language of their body.

So you think you understand the language of your body? Think again

T E S T I M O N I A L

This book is like a bible I was almost overwhelmed by the detail and great content shared in this book. I found the emotional components related to each disease to be very accurate and the key points shared in the book to be extremely helpful Evette also clearly explained the Key Points under each disease and emotional components, which issues and blocks to focus on when approaching certain diseases. The Key Points are explained very well. If you are a an alternative practitioner then you will find that in the a session with a client has already been mapped out for you in the Key Points under each illness. This was so helpful, as Evette recorded all the right questions to ask a client. I particularly loved the first 4 chapters in the book, where Evette explains the history and foundation of Metaphysical Anatomy and a little bit about their personal development seminars content, which was high level information but easy to understand and interesting. This book is a must-have for all holistic healthcare and well-being professionals and I look forward to working with it for many years to come.

Written for yogis of all levels, 'The Anatomy of Yoga Coloring Book' perfectly bridges the gap between anatomy textbook, yoga compendium, and interactive revision tool. The human body is a complex and fascinating machine. Author Jo Ann Staugaard-Jones illustrates just how clever it is by first breaking it down in to its component parts, and then putting it back together in its full glory within the context of yoga movement. Starting with a comprehensive examination of the nervous system, anatomical movement, and all the body systems, the book then truly comes to life as Staugaard-Jones presents over 50 popular asanas describing with color and artistry which muscles are being strengthened (contracting), which are being stretched (lengthened), and which muscles are working as stabilizers to support the pose. Test your knowledge as you color intricate black and white drawings of each asana The seven categories of asanas are presented with prompts to color relevant structures and functions, insightful technique tips, and anatomical nuggets that will enhance your understanding of the science behind your practice. You will learn not only the benefits of each pose but also the contraindications, relevant terminology, and how to vary poses where necessary. The healing heart of yoga What sets this book apart from others is its inclusion of the subtler realm of yoga - that which is referred to as 'energetic anatomy'. Understanding the unseen energies of the body in terms of fascia, bandhas, nadis, and chakras will take you beyond just muscle and joint mechanics, alignment and technique, and connect you more profoundly to the yogic way of life.
