The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the Compendium of HIV Prevention Interventions with Evidence of Effectiveness to respond to prevention service providers, planners, and others who request science-based intervention that works to prevent HIV transmission.
Single, categorical services provided to persons with multiple related risks miss significant opportunities to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease. This is exacerbated in communities that are considered "hard to reach."
The purpose of this workbook is to help public health program members, administrators, and evaluators develop a joint understanding of what constitutes an evaluation plan, why it is important, and how to develop an effective evaluation plan in the context of the planning process.
There is growing recognition of the relationship between health and academic performance, and your school's results from using the SHI can help you include health promotion activities in your overall School Improvement Plan.
This Guidance for HIV Prevention Community Planning defines the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) expectations of health departments and HIV prevention community planning groups (CPGs) in implementing HIV prevention community planning. HIV Prevention Community Planning is one of nine required essential components of a comprehensive HIV prevention program as outlined in Program Announcement #04012 (2004-2008), HIV Prevention Projects, Notice of Availability of Funds.
Kenn Amdahl usually writes "funny books on dull subjects" like There Are No Electrons: Electronics for Earthlings and Calculus for Cats (with math professor Jim Loats). When a friend was diagnosed with ALS, he began casually educating himself about the disease, with no intent to write a book. It turns out, no one completely understands ALS yet. Theories about its cause have ranged from people eating fruit bats, to toxins in blue-green algae, to weed killers, to ingredients in soft drinks and processed meats, to nutritional deficiencies. The more Kenn learned, the more curious he became. Remarkably, ALS seems to share some characteristics with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's; curing one may lead to a cure for all of them. The progress is amazing and accelerating; we have good reasons to be hopeful. Kenn wound up learning many weird scientific tidbits plus some interesting medical history. Revenge of the Pond Scum is the journal of his quest. It includes many of those tidbits and side trips, as well as a few of his own brainstorms. If you're embarking on a similar quest, this book may save you a lot of time.
Osteoporosis currently affects 25 million people in the United States, and as the baby boomers enter their fifties, this bone-weakening disease is poised to strike millions more. Because of this disease, many older people will suffer from a bone fracture at some point , and far too many of these fractures will result in permanent disability. The good news is that this devastating "silent epidemic" is entirely preventable, and in The Osteoporosis Book, readers of all ages will find everything they need to know to slow, stop, and even reverse the bone loss that causes this crippling disease. Written by Dr. Nancy E. Lane, a leading investigator and clinician in the field of osteoporosis, it is an indispensable guide to the exciting medical breakthroughs that have taken place in the past few years--in bone density measurement, in estrogen therapy, and in our knowledge of the bone cycle--that now allow doctors to predict who is at risk and to monitor these individuals in their fifties, before a fracture occurs. Readers learn to evaluate--and whenever possible, eliminate--the risk factors in their own lives. "What vitamins should I take? Is hormone replacement therapy right for me? And what about exercise?" The answers are here. And for those already affected by osteoporosis, Dr. Lane provides the most effective and up-to-date medical and practical advice available anywhere for coping with its aches and pains and safeguarding against further deterioration. Impeccably researched and reassuringly accessible, The Osteoporosis Book empowers readers to make informed healthcare choices that will enhance the quality of their lives for decades to come. It has been endorsed by the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
The author relates a poignant account of the life and death of her special daughter, Sandy, who was born with Sotos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder.
Imagine being able to know on a regular basis whether your habits are on the right or the wrong track towards protecting your health. "Beat Cancer Before it Beats You" was written for you, my reader, to safeguard and improve your health on a daily basis. Imagine the body giving you a visual feedback about the status of your health, a measure of the acidity of your body by self testing. There is no need to get a prescription and it will cost only a few pennies a day. The motivation for the book came from a surprising discovery by the author. The author has been studying about acidity in the body and diseases for more than a decade before the amazing discovery related to his 89 year old Dad's cancer. The author's dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer in January 2012. Surgery and radiation were ruled out because of the trauma involved. There was no option but to leave it alone and wait for the cancer to take its toll. 18 months after the diagnosis, the patient continues to enjoy normal health with no visible symptoms of cancer. The book will reveal the simple steps taken by the author while he makes a call for further research. In the process of writing the book, the author collaborated with a medical doctor and discovered many clinical papers linking acidity of the body and diseases. The book will reveal the tips that can be used to safeguard your health and that of everyone in your circle of influence.
Fifty-nine-year-old Robert LaPlante gave up cigarettes in his twenties, was never overweight, practiced good health habits, and had run marathons and many other foot races. He lived his life in a way he believed would ward off terrible things like cancer. But in November 2008, LaPlante received the devastating diagnosis of signet ring cell adenocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that begins in the appendix. In "Cancer No Chemo," LaPlante documents his three-year battle with cancer-from the initial diagnosis, to surgery to remove ten inches of colon and twenty-two lymph nodes, to winning the fight. Through journal entries, he shares his innermost thoughts during his treatment and recovery, including the fearful decision to forgo chemotherapy in favor of holistic healing methods that are gaining a place in the battle against cancer. In this memoir, he shares how he believes a positive attitude is the most important tool that inspires positive action. "Cancer No Chemo" provides an inspiring look at how one man battled a foreboding cancer diagnosis and won.
Wendy Lawson has an autism spectrum disorder. Considered to be intellectually disabled and "almost incapable of doing as she is told" at school, she was later misdiagnosed as schizophrenic - a label that stuck with her for more than 25 years.;Her sense of self was then non-existent, but Wendy is now a mother of four with two university degrees; she is a social worker and adult educator, and operates her own business. She is also a poet and writer, sharing her understanding of autism with others to help "build a bridge ...from my world to theirs". This book is part of that bridge.

There have been many exciting advances in our understanding of
mammalian sex determination and differentiation in the last decade.
Using these advances to elucidate clinical conditions of abnormal
sexual development, the authors bring together great expertise in
molecular endocrinology, molecular genetics, and dysmorphology. The
text begins with a discussion of normal gonadal and sexual
development that presents enough embryology, biochemistry, and
endocrinology to make the remaining chapters easy to assimilate.
Then the authors discuss overarching clinical issues that are
common to genetic abnormalities of gonadal and sexual development,
providing a detailed account of genetic causes of gonadal
maldevelopment, followed by a compendium of the singular,
syndromal, endocrinologic, and systemic-metabolic genetic causes of
sexual maldevelopment. The final section describes genetic forms of
gamete failure.
"Judy is a wonderful physical therapist, who has energy, enthusiasm and the best 'can do' attitude. She has accurately given a description of the major task of 'in-home care' that most people cannot understand. I applaud her efforts; both the monumental task of care for Dean (who was a super guy) and writing this helpful book. Job well done " -Joyce Dunlevy Cready, RN, BSN, Rehabilitation "I want to commend Mrs. Jennings on the work done to put together this book. It will be a valuable resource for patients and caregivers, and provides an honest and thoughtful look at her experiences with LBD. It was an honor to care for Dean and I know that her work with him and in this book will help others who are going through the same difficult life journey." -Andrew P. Duker, MD, Neurology "This book is medically appropriate and concise. The information has breadth that is not available in other books. I will recommend it to all my patients with Lewy Body Dementia." -James P. Towne, PT, FAPTA Linda L. Towne, PT, MEd, Orthopedic and Neurological Physical Therapy
The Cure For Cancer is proven science. There are no gimmicks, nothing to harm you and nothing expensive
you must buy to cure yourself of cancer. Cancer is caused by poisons damaging DNA in the nucleus of the
cell and preventing those cells from natural program death called
apoptosis. All cancers are caused by poisons, toxins, drugs, chemicals.
100% of all cancers. This book is about recognizing those poisons and how to avoid
them; as well as teaching you safe alternatives to the poison foods
and drinks that are the core of what is called "the American
diet." You can cure yourself of cancer and any other disease WHILE you
still listen to your doctors, except the parts about death, dying
and no cures. And for those who are not cured, the worst you will do is
significantly improve your health and add precious time to your
lives. And to be quite honest, you will actually save money as you
stop the excessive eating out and learning to get your food
addictions under control. And yes, I said get your food addictions under control. Your
mind is where those addictions are. Those foods and drinks give you
sensations. But it was the sting of death and disease; as you now
know. This book empowers YOU with the knowledge you need to cure
yourself. Much of this knowledge has been around for centuries.
Doctors turned their backs on this healing medical science in the
past 75-100 years. The rest of the knowledge has to do with guiding
you out of your current diet of poison saturated foods and drinks;
a big part of what you call food, is only pure poison. Doctors know most of this medical science but won't tell
you. Find out about a common household item that will stop your cancer and prevent it from existing in your body. A month's supply costs $1 anywhere. Just mix with water. It's science we all use to know and share, but abandoned starting in the 1940's and 50's. Get science working for you, significantly improving your health, on your way to what very likely will cure you. The only miracle about The Cure For Cancer is how this book
teaches you the natural science mankind used for the entire history
of the world until the mid 1900's The author of The Cure for Cancer has Published other books such
as: The Author is an expert in cures, natural healing, herbs,
vitamins and Organic Gardening. Table of Contents
Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the world, and the number of individuals living and caring for people suffering from the disease is expected to rise sharply as elderly populations rise throughout the world. Alzheimer's disease presents both medical and social challenges that are expected to increase exponentially, and the treatments for the disease will most likely not improve until the manner in which drugs are developed is changed. Currently, there has been minimal advancement in our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases in the last 3 decades, and this can be directly attributed to our lack of scientific understanding, which will continue impede the medical preventions and treatments for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. This scientific barrier will most likely result in health care crisis on a level that has not been experienced before, which will be compounded by the subsequent social and financial problems as a result of it.
Do you or someone you know have Lupus? Researchers still don't know what exactly causes lupus or how to cure it. Lupus is difficult to diagnose because it is similar to many other diseases. There also doesn't seem to be any reason for someone to contract the disease except for that it is nine times more likely to attack women than it is to attack men. So what exactly is lupus? Lupus is a disease of the immune system. Once a patient has been diagnosed with Lupus, they will be wondering how to live a normal life, when everything they have read makes it seem like that won't be possible. Learn about the best things a person with Lupus can do to have a great life. Read about the causes of Lupus, the signs and symptoms to look for, the types of Lupus and much more.
Hemodialysis is the most common method used to treat advanced and permanent kidney failure. Since the 1960s, when hemodialysis first became a practical treatment for kidney failure, we've learned much about how to make hemodialysis treatments more effective and minimize side effects. In recent years, more compact and simpler dialysis machines have made home dialysis increasingly attractive. But even with better procedures and equipment, hemodialysis is still a complicated and inconvenient therapy that requires a coordinated effort from your whole health care team, including your nephrologist, dialysis nurse, dialysis technician, dietitian, and social worker. The most important members of your health care team are you and your family. This publication by the National Institutes of Health (Publication No. 07-4666) will help you to understand hemodialysis, "How it Works," and your personal care and health during treatment. By learning about your treatment, you can work with your health care team to give yourself the best possible results, and you can lead a full, active life.
Food gives you energy and helps your body repair itself. Food is broken down in your stomach and intestines. Your blood picks up nutrients from the digested food and carries them to all your body cells. These cells take nutrients from your blood and put waste products back into the bloodstream. When your kidneys were healthy, they worked around the clock to remove wastes from your blood. The wastes left your body when you urinated. Other wastes are removed in bowel movements. Now that your kidneys have stopped working, hemodialysis removes wastes from your blood. But between dialysis sessions, wastes can build up in your blood and make you sick. You can reduce the amount of wastes by watching what you eat and drink. A good meal plan can improve your dialysis and your health. Your clinic has a dietitian to help you plan meals. A dietitian specializes in food and nutrition. A dietitian with special training in care for kidney health is called a renal dietitian. When you start hemodialysis, you must make many changes in your life. Watching the foods you eat will make you healthier. This publication by the National Institutes of Health (Publication No. 08-4274) will help you choose the right foods. Use this with a dietitian to help you learn how to eat right to feel right on hemodialysis.
With peritoneal dialysis (PD), you have some choices in treating advanced and permanent kidney failure. Since the 1980s, when PD first became a practical and widespread treatment for kidney failure, much has been learned about how to make PD more effective and minimize side effects. Since you don't have to schedule dialysis sessions at a center, PD gives you more control. You can give yourself treatments at home, at work, or on trips. But this independence makes it especially important that you work closely with your health care team: your nephrologist, dialysis nurse, dialysis technician, dietitian, and social worker. But the most important members of your health care team are you and your family. By learning about your treatment, you can work with your health care team to give yourself the best possible results, and you can lead a full, active life. This publication by the National Institutes of Health (Publication No. 06-4688) discusses Peritoneal Dialysis - "How it Works," "Preventing Issues," and your personal care and health during treatment.
If you have advanced and permanent kidney failure, kidney transplantation may be the treatment option that allows you to live much like you lived before your kidneys failed. Since the 1950s, when the first kidney transplants were performed, much has been learned about how to prevent rejection and minimize the side effects of medicines. But transplantation is not a cure; it's an ongoing treatment that requires you to take medicines for the rest of your life. And the wait for a donated kidney can be years long. A successful transplant takes a coordinated effort from your whole health care team, including your nephrologist, transplant surgeon, transplant coordinator, pharmacist, dietitian, and social worker. But the most important members of your health care team are you and your family. By learning about your treatment, you can work with your health care team to give yourself the best possible results, and you can lead a full, active life. This publication by the National Institutes of Health (Publication No. 06-4687) discusses Transplantation - "How it Works" and "The Process" from the Waiting List to Posttransplant Care.
Hepatitis C is a liver disease. Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Inflammation is the painful, red swelling that results when tissues of the body become injured or infected. Inflammation can cause organs to not work properly. This publication by the National Institutes of Health (Publication No. 09-4229) provides information about the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments for Hepatitis C. Other types of hepatitis exist. The National Institutes of Health has also provided additional publications about Hepatitis A - "What I Need to Know About Hepatitis A" - Publication No. 09-4244 - and Hepatitis B - "What I Need to Know About Hepatitis B" - Publication No. 09-4228.
Constipation means different things to different people. You may have constipation if you have three or fewer bowel movements in a week or if stool is hard, dry, painful, or difficult to pass. Some people with constipation lack energy and feel full or bloated. Some people think they have constipation if they don't have a bowel movement every day. However, bowel habits are different for everyone. The foods you eat, how much you exercise, and other factors can affect your bowel habits. At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. In most cases, it lasts for only a short time and is not serious. When you understand what causes constipation, you can take steps to prevent it. This publication by the National Institutes of Health (Publication No. 09-4157) provides information on the causes and treatments for constipation. |
