"Jolene writes with great heart and passion about a dog breed
disenfranchised not because of what they are, but because of what
we imagine them to be. I love stories that support the underdog,
and Jolene's tale of her beloved pit bull terrier is exactly that.
It is also a delight to read, and a worthy story to ponder. And you
will fall in love with Rumer, I'll promise you that." "Jolene has truly captured the ways animals enrich and bless our
lives in profound ways. Not only is "Angel On My Shoulder" a story
of an exceptional, loving pit bull named Rumer, it is on a larger
scale the defense of a gentle, loyal breed that has been much
maligned and misunderstood. May it help everyone understand both
the true nature of the American Pit Bull as well as the true nature
of love." "Far more than any other breed, the American pit bull represents
different things to different people. Badly managed dogs grab
headlines because their behavior is atypical; Jolene's experience
represents the far less shocking though no less fascinating reality
of life with a peaceful, loving, comedic pit bull as 'best friend'.
If you enjoy tales of true love, you will value this story." On a bitterly cold February day in 1992, a woman named Jolene found herself with a choice to make: the brindle puppy in a kindly stranger's left palm-or the red puppy in his right? For Jolene Mercadante, a librarian and lifelong animal advocate, this was the first tentative step on a journey that would impact the way she lived the rest of her life. She had no way of knowing how Rumer, a single little soul the size of a sausage, was about to change her life. Through all of life's great adventures-the perfect five-week-old baby; the lanky, rebellious teenager; the extraordinary, splendid adult-Rumer was a creature of humor and love. She joyfully shattered the unjust "pit bull" stereotypes. She might not have been a heroic rescue dog, a therapy dog, or a war hero; there are other pit bulls who can claim this fame. But Rumer did touch the lives of everyone who knew her, and that made her heroic in her own way. ""She did save us, she did rescue us, and she was our hero in so many ways."" Rumer was an ordinary dog who lived an ordinary life, but that's what made her extraordinary. This memoir is an unforgettable love story and an uplifting journey brought about by the life of a truly pure and beautiful soul.
One of the best tie-down calf ropers ever to come out of South Texas, Juan Salinas grew up on a 15,000-acre ranch near Laredo, with the finest of horses to ride and hundreds of head of cattle to practice on. He roped in Texas rodeos large and small from the mid-1920s to 1935. From 1936 to 1946, he followed the national rodeo circuit, competing from Texas to New York's Madison Square Garden. At the time, few if any other Mexican Americans competed in rodeo, and Salinas drew a lot of attention. Salinas also operated his family's Texas ranch, where he ran cattle and raised prize roping quarter horses. In this account of his life and career, Salinas's nephew, Ricardo Palacios, recounts the many tales his uncle told him--tales of friendship with Gene Autry, going to Sally Rand's wedding reception, riding on the Rodeo Train, and sponsoring seven-time world champion tie-down calf roper Toots Mansfield. He also narrates life on the range, with his uncle riding across a pasture at full speed, gingerly holding the reins and a thirty-five foot coil of rope in his left hand while swinging the roping loop overhead with his right hand as he chased a three-hundred-pound calf for the throw. The story of Juan Salinas is also the story of the people of Mexican origin who live on the ranches of the South Texas brush country. Strong, rugged, independent, and hard-working, they knew social and economic success that has all too seldom been chronicled. Tio Juan was the family cowboy, the hero, the rodeo star, and Palacios tells his uncle's story with warmth and admiration. In 1991 Salinas was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. He was also named Rancher ofthe Year by Laredo's Borderfest and won the Ranching Heritage Award given by the King Ranch and Texas A&M-Kingsville. In 1993, he was inducted into the Lulac International Sports Hall of Fame. These were, Palacios writes, "fitting tributes to a champion and fine additions to his collection of trophy roping saddles, silver trophies, and champion's buckles."
Precision agriculture is now 'main stream' in agriculture and is playing a key role as the industry comes to terms with the environment, market forces, quality requirements, traceability, vehicle guidance and crop management. Research continues to be necessary - and needs to be reported and disseminated to a wide audience. These proceedings contain reviewed papers presented at the 10th European Conference on Precision Agriculture, held at the Volcani Centre, Israel. The papers reflect the wide range of disciplines that impinge on precision agriculture - technology, crop science, soil science, agronomy, information technology, decision support, remote sensing and others. The broad range of research topics reported will be a valuable resource for researchers, advisors, teachers and professionals in agriculture long after the conference has finished.

Suzy Lowry Geno walks the hills and creek side of Old Field Farm seeking a simpler peace-filled life like those of her grandparents and great-grandparents who worked those acres before her. But as she finally began to rest in the true joys of faith, family and slower living, she was forced back into the realities of the world of technology in the struggle to save her husband's life. Journey with her as she hays goats, waters chickens, gathers eggs, makes goat milk soap; minds her little farm store; gets a traffic ticket racing her husband to a blood transfusion; tries, fails, and tries again to make her homestead a success; and suffers a frightening snake bite, all while walking through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Join her in "Simple Times at Old Field Farm" as she emerges triumphantly on the mountainside "keeping her hands busy and her heart open."
