HIGHLY COMMENDED for the British Medical Awards book prize for
Popular Medicine Most of us have some behaviours which are not
fully under our control but when those start interfering with our
lives and with who we want to be, we need this book. When we turn
away from opportunity and excitement in case it makes us anxious,
we lose the joy in our lives and can experience misery and
depression as well as, oddly, even more anxiety. Get Your Life Back
helps you to identify what is really important to you and to notice
the ways in which you behave which interfere with reaching your
goals and following valued directions. It shows how to understand
your own behaviour with compassion, without judgement, and how to
both accept and change unhelpful or damaging ways of acting. You
will learn new skills to manage emotion and endure discomfort as
you journey towards mindful self-control. Uniquely, this book
presents a blend of evidence-based treatments (CBT, ACT, DBT,
compassion and mindfulness) giving you the best and most effective
therapies for a better you.
At one time, the use of corporal punishment by parents in
child-rearing was considered normal, but in the second half of the
nineteenth century this begin to change, in Quebec as well as the
rest of the Western world. It was during this period that the
extent of ill-treatment inflicted on childrenatreatment once
excused as good child-rearing practiceawas discovered. This book
analyzes both the advice provided to parents and the different
forms of child abuse within families. Cliche derives her
information from family magazines, reports and advice columns in
newspapers, people's life stories, the records of the Montreal
Juvenile Court, and even comic strips. Two dates are given
particular focus: 1920, with the trial of the parents of Aurore
Gagnon, which sensitized the public to the phenomenon of "child
martyrs;" and 1940, with the advent of the New Education movement,
which was based on psychology rather than strict discipline and
religious doctrine. There has always been child abuse. What has
changed is society's sensitivity to it. That is why defenders of
children's rights call for the repeal of Section 43 of the Canadian
Criminal Code, which authorizes "reasonable" corporal punishment.
Abuse or Punishment? considers not only the history of violence
towards children in Quebec but the history of public perception of
this violence and what it means for the rest of Canada.
Imagine if the mere breeze of an air conditioner were to send you
into excruciating pain. For those suffering from Complex Regional
Pain Syndrome (CRPS), historically called Reflex Sympathetic
Dystrophy (RSD), this crippling neuropathic pain is an unrelenting
reality. With symptoms such as swelling, hypersensitivity,
stiffness, burning pain, and temperature abnormalities, CRPS can
develop at any time and quickly leaves its victims disabled and
isolated. This book explains CRPS in an accessible style, featuring
modern self-help techniques, complementary therapies, and holistic
strategies for maximizing the potential for healing. Readers with
CRPS will find a wealth of tips on life modifications to help
better manage their condition, along with a list of "dynamite
distractions" to refresh the pain-wracked mind and help them
rediscover their imagination and humor. Patient testimonies on
techniques for transforming the pain and discomfort of CRPS provide
hope, and interviews with practitioners, including pain specialist
Edward Carden and occupational therapist/neurological acupuncturist
Sheri Barnes, offer insights every patient should know. There's
even a chapter addressed to loved ones with advice for their
difficult roles as encouragers and caregivers. CRPS remains a
mysterious, poorly understood condition. This book provides the
information and positive options everyone affected by CRPS
needs.
We can see the injustice and inequality in our lives and in the
world. We are ready to rise up. But how, exactly, do we do this?
How does one reconcile? What we need is a clear sense of direction.
Based on her extensive consulting experience with churches,
colleges and organizations, Rev. Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil has
created a roadmap to show us the way. She guides us through the
common topics of discussion and past the bumpy social terrain and
political boundaries that will arise. In this revised and expanded
edition, McNeil has updated her signature roadmap to incorporate
insights from her more recent work. Roadmap to Reconciliation 2.0
includes a new preface and a new chapter on restoration, which
address the high costs for people of color who work in
reconciliation and their need for continual renewal. With
reflection questions and exercises at the end of each chapter, this
book is ideal to read together with your church or organization. If
you are ready to take the next step into unity, wholeness and
justice, then this is the book for you.
A riveting expose of child abuse in America and how the newest
breed of pediatricians determines what happened, why, and at whose
hands. Although more than one million children are abused each year
in the United States, child abuse often remains a secret to family
members, professionals, and politicians who neither see nor
understand it. Child abuse pediatricians are the newest breed of
pediatricians, specialized in exposing abuse. With detective-like
acumen, child abuse pediatricians deduce through careful medical
analysis who has abused and who has been abused. Describing the
most compelling cases among the thousands that they have evaluated,
author Lawrence Ricci reveals the trauma, pain, disability, and
sometimes death that abused children experience at the hands of
trusted adults. This gripping look at the dark side of American
families is about good parents and poor ones, perpetrators and
victims, and collateral victims such as innocent family members. It
is also about the professionals who have made it their career to
expose child abuse and to treat children who have suffered from it.
The conclusion calls for systematic changes that could help to stem
the tide of child abuse. Explains how signs of abuse can be missed
by professionals, community members, and even family members
Includes interviews and insights from more than two dozen child
abuse pediatricians Addresses physical, sexual, and emotional
abuse, including abuse by neglect and abuse due to Munchausen
syndrome by proxy Details how cases can go wrong in court rooms
when confuscation by defense attorneys overpowers evidence brought
to court by child abuse pediatricians Offers ideas for stemming the
tide of child abuse

The 20th anniversary edition of the definitive classic on defeating
obsessive-compulsive behavior, with all-new material from the
author. An estimated 5 million Americans suffer from
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and live diminished lives in
which they are compelled to obsess about something or to repeat a
similar task over and over. Traditionally, OCD has been treated
with Prozac or similar drugs. The problem with medication, aside
from its cost, is that 30 percent of people treated don't respond
to it, and when the pills stop, the symptoms invariably return. In
Brain Lock, Jeffrey M. Schwartz, M.D., presents a simple four-step
method for overcoming OCD that is so effective, it's now used in
academic treatment centers throughout the world. Proven by
brain-imaging tests to actually alter the brain's chemistry, this
method doesn't rely on psychopharmaceuticals. Instead, patients use
cognitive self-therapy and behavior modification to develop new
patterns of response to their obsessions. In essence, they use the
mind to fix the brain. Using the real-life stories of actual
patients, Brain Lock explains this revolutionary method and
provides readers with the inspiration and tools to free themselves
from their psychic prisons and regain control of their lives.
