of adults support children and young people with anxiety. Clear
information on the nature of anxiety is combined with helpful
ideas, practical strategies and resources to help adults feel
confident in understanding and managing the emotional well-being of
children and young people. Supporting Children and Young People
with Anxiety cuts through the literature and provides practical
support based on sound psychological theory and evidence-based
practice. Intervention programmes and suggested strategies have
been tried and tested in schools and colleges, with young people
and families, and can be adapted for use with groups, individual
children or parents. Presuming no prior experience on the part of
the reader, the authors acknowledge the challenges involved in
recognising anxiety and delivering tailored treatment, and
emphasise the role of prevention and early intervention. All
resources are provided as photocopiable and downloadable resources
which can be easily customised for use with children and parents.
This essential text will prove an invaluable resource for worried
parents, students, teachers and carers, enabling them to soothe,
support and empower the young people in their care.

When her alcoholic and emotionally abusive mother's health
declines, Joan Rough invites her to move in with her. Rough longs
to be the "good daughter," helping her narcissistic mother face the
reality of her coming death. But when repressed memories of
childhood abuse by her mother arise, Rough is filled with deep
resentment and hatred toward the woman who birthed her, and her
dream of mending their tattered relationship shatters. Seven years
later, when her mother dies, she is left with a plastic bag of her
mother's ashes and a diagnosis of PTSD. What will she do with them?
Courageous and unflinchingly honest, Scattering Ashes is a powerful
chronicle of letting go of a loved one, a painful past, and fear a
journey that will bring hope to others who grapple with the pain
and repercussions of abuse.
From the author of Women, Sex, and Addiction, a timely and controversial second look at 12-Step programs, helping all readers to draw on the steps' underlying wisdom, adapting them to their own experiences, beliefs, and sources of strength.
The 'Get to Know Me' series is made up of resources aimed at
children with additional needs and those who support them in the
classroom. Developed by child psychologist Dr Louise Lightfoot and
illustrated by Catherine Hicks, the series includes activities
specific to anxiety, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
(OCD). This book, Draw Along Sammy Sloth, is an activity-based
picture book story, in which individual children are encouraged to
interact with the story in a creative way - through writing,
drawing, scrap booking, collage, activities etc. Active engagement
helps children to understand and process information, and aids
long-term recall. It has been designed to support the individual
child and encourage an empathetic and inclusive environment. In
this book, we meet Sammy, a sloth who lives in a beautiful tree by
the sea. The story follows Sammy as he wakes up one day to find he
feels funny and strange. He can't sit still and does not feel like
his usual happy and relaxed self. After pacing up and down he meets
Anna the Armadillo who tells Sammy that he is silly and has no
right to be sad when his life is good. Sammy hears this and feels
embarrassed and ashamed of how he has been feeling. Sammy hides
away until he meets a kind lizard who shows him kindness and
empathy. This book was written with children with anxiety in mind,
providing an opportunity to relate to Sammy's thoughts, feelings,
behaviours and experiences. However, children with a range of needs
may benefit from the story. The book is written in a narrative
style, so it does not use diagnostic labels and is not intended for
this purpose. Instead the focus is on creating a common language
which children can understand and use to make sense of how they are
feeling. A practitioner guidebook is also available (ISBN
9780815349419).
Professional hockey player Mike Greenza was a first-round draft
pick out of Cornell University, full of youth, talent, and
unlimited potential. Midway through his second NHL season, that
potential is still unrealized. He and his team struggle, scraping
the bottom of their division. A chance comment by Greenza's little
sister, Britt, changes everything. Reacting to her brother's
moodiness and fatigue, she reminds him of former professor Dr. Jim
Maas, who had been an advisor to his Cornell team and a nationally
renowned sleep coach. Told as a fable and filled with
performance-enhancing scientific facts for athletes of every level
in all sports, Sleep to Win follows Greenza as the season unfolds.
He reconnects with Maas, author and world renowned sleep
researcher, who schools him in the latest sleep research as it
applies to athletes, including the exact amount of sleep athletes
need; how a specific sleep stage actually enhances what is
practiced; a way to heal (and prevent) injury with extra rest; and
the elements of the perfect pre-game nap. Soon, Mike is skating
better and scoring more, his teammates are jumping on the
sleep-to-win bandwagon, his coach is becoming a believer, and the
entire team is climbing out of the cellar and into the Stanley Cup
playoffs-a testament to the power of sleep.
Thinking about our body's functions can be scary, especially when
it morphs into Health Anxiety that gets in the way of everyday
life. Facing Mighty Fears About Health teaches 4 steps to manage
'false alarm' fears. Fun Facts about the body engage children,
while a Note to Parents and Caregivers and supplemental Resource
section make this the perfect guide for parents and mental health
professionals. This book is part of the Dr. Dawn's Mini Books About
Mighty Fears series, designed to help children ages 6-10 tackle
their fears and live happier lives.
Sexual assault and harassment in the military have been a critical
subject for years. Many victims may be reluctant to press charges
because of fear of retaliation, damage to their careers, and
widespread uncertainty regarding the military justice system.
However, when circumstances arise, there are resources available to
assist victims and families in their efforts to report, seek help,
and recover from the effects of sexual assault. Yet, finding those
resources can be challenging, especially in a time of crisis.
Sexual Assault in the Military serves as an easy-to-use,
comprehensive reference guide for military members and their
families about sexual assault and harassment. While more and more
attention focuses on getting victims to report their abuse,
accessing information can still be difficult for service-members.
Understanding that the military is making changes, and offering
support is a necessary step towards how best to treat these cases
and how to get help and justice. Cheryl Lawhorne-Scott and Don
Philpott discuss the current state of affairs, the systems in
place, and the supports available to victims and families. They
provide documents that outline how reporting can and should take
place, how cases should be handled through the military justice
system, and how and where victims can access resources, including
counseling. By providing this information in one ready resource,
the authors hope to assist in changing the culture of silence and
fear, as well as provide education surrounding military sexual
assault and harassment.

In this updated second edition, the author presents a sensible,
easy-to-follow method for changing the course of one's
relationships. Anyone who has struggled with balancing his or her
own needs and desires with those of the "other" person will
appreciate and benefit from the easy-to-implement suggestions. Its
format combines psychoeducation, personal anecdotes, anonymous
clinical case vignettes, and skills-building exercises. Working
with individuals and groups on this topic of loss of self in
others, author Nancy L. Johnston identifies four areas of recovery
work that can help an individual cultivate a healthy self: facing
Illusions, detaching, setting healthy boundaries, and developing
spirituality. Emotional over-involvement in relationships can throw
even otherwise well-functioning people out of balance - thoughts
become focused on the other person in ways that are unhealthy for
both the individual and the relationship - commonly leading to
feelings of anxiety, agitation, helplessness, depression, anger,
and resentment. Johnson provides a detailed description of ways to
turn this self-destructive cycle around with current best practices
and research data, and includes self-assessments and experiential
exercises designed to address essential aspects of self-awareness,
distortions in thinking, communication style and tools, and
spirituality. "Disentangling" is the process of creating enough
emotional space between oneself and another person in order to
better see the realities of any relationship and make healthier
conscious decisions about it.

Technology has significantly changed our world. Sexual imagery
and encounters can now be accessed anywhere, anytime, using
portable electronic devices. Users can generate a stream of graphic
pornography, a wide variety of virtual sexual activities, and
casual, anonymous, or paid-for sexual encounters with a click or a
tap. Simply put, we have greater access to highly stimulating
sexual content, and potential sexual partners, with much less
built-in accountability. Porn addicts are especially vulnerable to
the lure of digital technology and the seemingly endless array of
stimulation it provides. Research suggests that cyber-porn addicts
spend at least eleven or twelve hours per week online viewing
porn.
Today, all forms of sex addiction are technology driven--from
porn websites to webcams to casual sex hook-up apps found on
smartphones. Sex addicts organize their lives around the pursuit of
sexual activity with self or others, spending inordinate amounts of
time viewing and masturbating to porn or planning, pursuing, and
engaging in sex acts. At the same time, they neglect important
relationships, work, and personal responsibilities. Overwhelming
feelings of guilt, shame, and remorse invade when the acting out
ends.
While it's complicated, recovery is possible. "Always Turned On"
shows readers how to turn those temptations off while providing
practical long-term solutions for recovery.
