Sport, Education and Corporatisation - Spaces of Connection, Contestation and Creativity (Hardcover): Geoffery Z. Kohe, Holly... Sport, Education and Corporatisation - Spaces of Connection, Contestation and Creativity (Hardcover)
Geoffery Z. Kohe, Holly Collison
R1,523 Discovery Miles 15 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Using an interdisciplinary approach, Sport, Education and Corporatisation offers an important critique of the intersection between sport organisations, commercial agendas and educational development. It reveals a discomforting interplay between sector stakeholders that has been normalised via discourses of civic 'good', social responsibility and community welfare. The book employs stakeholder theory, corporate social responsibility ideals, and holistic constructions of space to provide a framework to understand some of the latent and explicit complexities of sport sector connectivity. Interrogating the key contexts, issues and challenges that emerge from the Sport-Education-Corporate nexus and drawing upon evidence from international, national and local sport organisations, it argues for sustained and rigorous examination of the commercialisation of educational agendas and new directions for education-based corporate social responsibility within the sport industry. This is an invaluable resource for researchers working in the areas of sport management; sport development; sociology of sport; sport policy and politics; physical education; and the wider economics, organisational politics and business ethics fields. It is also a fascinating read for students within sport business management, sports studies, sport politics and physical education programmes.

Sport, Community Regeneration, Governance and Development - A comparative global perspective (Paperback): Rory Shand Sport, Community Regeneration, Governance and Development - A comparative global perspective (Paperback)
Rory Shand
R1,357 Discovery Miles 13 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sporting mega events are playing an increasingly important role in the governance of community regeneration and development across the globe. This book examines the ways in which sporting organisations engage with local communities through projects that target youth, health or social issues and act as key partners in governance mechanisms. Showcasing original research to suggest that sporting organisations, mega events and legacies are now operating as governing instruments in renewal programmes, it sheds new light on the role that sport plays in community regeneration and development on an international scale. Drawing on the interpretivist approach to governance which bridges theory and practice, the book considers how relationships between sporting mega events, legacies and local communities are evolving to foster trust and encourage participation. With international case studies from the UK, Brazil and South Africa, it reflects on best practice in relation to governance structure, funding mechanisms and partnerships. Sport, Community Regeneration, Governance and Development: A Comparative Global Perspective is fascinating reading for all students and scholars with an interest in governance, sport development, sport policy, sport management or the sociology of sport.

Football, Community and Sustainability (Paperback): Chris Porter, Anthony May, Annabel Kiernan Football, Community and Sustainability (Paperback)
Chris Porter, Anthony May, Annabel Kiernan
R1,254 Discovery Miles 12 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A lack of 'sustainability thinking' is evident at the heart of many of the problems that football faces today; from the huge amounts of money that clubs seem compelled to spend on what are often short-term gains - and the speculation, debt and market-centred ideology that goes with it - to the not unrelated deep disenchantment experienced by many football fans for a game that they still, despite it all, remain determined to love. Sustainability here is more broadly conceptualised than focusing on environmental issues. It encompasses social and economic sustainability, albeit with a critical eye on the interdependent, often contradictory, relationship between what the United Nations regards as the three 'pillars' of sustainability (environmental, social and economic). Fittingly, this book is the result of an international collaboration between an interdisciplinary network of academics and football industry practitioners, brought together by the Centre for the Study of Football and its Communities (CSFC), based at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. The critical insights collected here focus not just on football's problems, but also how clubs, authorities, players and fans in a range of local contexts are positively tackling the challenges of surviving and thriving in the contemporary global game. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sport & Society.

This book focuses on the advent of professional football in Liverpool and, in particular, the formation of Everton and Liverpool football clubs and their development prior to World War I. This book details the factors that led to the early dominance within Liverpool of Everton FC, and addresses the complexity of the dispute within that club leading to the later formation of Liverpool FC by expelled club members. This book also highlights, via a comparative study, the different patterns of ownership and control that emerged within the two clubs between their incorporation as limited liability companies in 1892. This book was originally published as a special issue of Soccer & Society.

Commonwealth Caribbean Sports Law (Hardcover): Jason Haynes, J. Tyrone Marcus Commonwealth Caribbean Sports Law (Hardcover)
Jason Haynes, J. Tyrone Marcus
R5,227 Discovery Miles 52 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sports Law has quickly developed into an accepted area of academic study and practice in the legal profession globally. In Europe and North America, Sports Law has been very much a part of the legal landscape for about four decades, while in more recent times, it has blossomed in other geographic regions, including the Commonwealth Caribbean. This book recognizes the rapid evolution of Sports Law and seeks to embrace its relevance to the region. This book offers guidance, instruction and legal perspectives to students, athletes, those responsible for the administration of sport, the adjudication of sports-related disputes and the representation of athletes in the Caribbean. It addresses numerous important themes from a doctrinal, socio-legal and comparative perspective, including sports governance, sports contracts, intellectual property rights and doping in sport, among other thought-provoking issues which touch and concern sport in the Commonwealth Caribbean. As part of the well-established Routledge Commonwealth Caribbean Law Series, this book adds to the Caribbean-centric jurisprudence that has been a welcome development across the region. With this new book, the authors assimilate the applicable case law and legislation into one location in order to facilitate an easier consumption of the legal scholarship in this increasingly important area of law.

Sports Diplomacy - Origins, Theory and Practice (Hardcover): Stuart Murray Sports Diplomacy - Origins, Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
Stuart Murray
R4,070 Discovery Miles 40 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers an accessible overview of the role sport plays in international relations and diplomacy. Sports diplomacy has previously been defined as an old but under-studied aspect of the estranged relations between peoples, nations and states. These days, it is better understood as the conscious, strategic and ongoing use of sport, sportspeople and sporting events by state and non-state actors to advance policy, trade, development, education, image, reputation, brand, and people-to-people links. In order to better understand the many occasions where sport and diplomacy overlap, this book presents four new, inter-disciplinary and theoretical categories of sports diplomacy: traditional, 'new', sport-as-diplomacy, and sports anti-diplomacy. These categories are further validated by a large number of case studies, ranging from the Ancient Olympiad to the recent appearance of esoteric, government sports diplomacy strategies, and beyond, to the activities of non-state sporting actors such as F.C. Barcelona, Colin Kaepernick and the digital world of e-sports. As a result, the landscape of sports diplomacy becomes clearer, as do the pitfalls and limitations of using sport as a diplomatic tool. This book will be of much interest to students of diplomacy, foreign policy, sports studies, and International Relations in general.

Conquests of 1966 of Alf and Gary - England'S Sport Finally Triumphs (Paperback): Brian Scovell Conquests of 1966 of Alf and Gary - England'S Sport Finally Triumphs (Paperback)

Many books have been written about the 1966 World Cup but this one is different. Brian Scovell was the only national newspaper sports writer-for the 'Daily Sketch'-to report on both the World Cup and the England v West Indies series dominated by Gary Sobers. He had full access to the heroes like Bobby Charlton, who was nearly run over on the day of the Final, Bobby Moore, who was sacked by West Ham just before the event and reinstated, Eusebio, Alf Ramsey, Colin Cowdrey, Tom Graveney, Brian Close, Ken Barrington, Wes Hall and all the leading figures. He contrasts these stirring and sportsmanlike happenings against what is occurring now-greed and corruption in football and the absence of genuine heroes in cricket. His 'on the spot reports' from his cuttings and the book he wrote on the Test series at the time, 'Everything that's cricket,' brings to life the action which captivated the nation. This is his 27th book and four of them have been short listed by the British Sports Books Award. After the 'Sketch' was merged with the 'Daily Mail' in 1971, he completed forty years with Associated Newspapers before retiring to write books.

Routledge Handbook of Theory in Sport Management (Paperback): George B. Cunningham, Janet S. Fink, Alison Doherty Routledge Handbook of Theory in Sport Management (Paperback)
George B. Cunningham, Janet S. Fink, Alison Doherty
R1,583 Discovery Miles 15 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Theory is an essential element in the development of any academic discipline and sport management is no exception. This is the first book to trace the intellectual contours of theory in sport management, and to explain, critique and celebrate the importance of sport management theory in academic research, teaching and learning, and in the development of professional practice. Written by a world-class team of international sport management scholars, each of whom has taken a leading role in developing a particular theory or framework for understanding sport management, the book covers the full span of contemporary issues, debates, themes and functional approaches, from corporate social responsibility and diversity to strategy, marketing and finance. Every chapter explores a key theoretical approach, including an overview of that theory, a discussion of the process of theory development and of how the theory has been employed in research, practice or teaching, and outlines directions for future research in that area. Each chapter includes cases and examples, as well as short illustrative commentaries from people who have used that particular theory in their work, and attempts to highlight the theory-practice links, or gaps, in that area. For a fully-rounded understanding of what sport management is and how it should be studied, taught and practiced, a thorough grounding in theory is essential. The Routledge Handbook of Theory in Sport Management is therefore important reading for all advanced students, researchers, instructors, managers and practitioners working in this exciting field.

Sport, Politics and the Charity Industry - Running for Water (Hardcover): Kyle Bunds Sport, Politics and the Charity Industry - Running for Water (Hardcover)
Kyle Bunds
R3,907 Discovery Miles 39 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sport is commonly used by charities and philanthropic organisations as a way of acquiring donors and fundraisers. In this ground-breaking study, Kyle Bunds examines the nexus of sport, politics and the charity industry through an investigation of water development agencies that raise funds in the developed world to build water systems in the developing world. Using innovative auto-ethnographic research methods, this book examines the links between water charities, charity running events and water development projects in the UK, USA, Canada and Africa. By exploring the political economy of philanthropy from a critical perspective, it suggests new ways in which to support and improve the relationships between sport, wider society and the environment. Posing important questions about the potential environmental impact of sport on an international level, this study presents a compelling vision of the future of water charities across the globe. Sport, Politics and the Charity Industry: Running for Water is fascinating reading for all those interested in sport and politics, sports geography, sport and the environment, sports development, or sport and the charity industry.
