The benefits of lifelong fitness activity are enormous, but the
United States seems to be experiencing a decline in health-related
fitness levels. The information presented here will be especially
suited to undergraduates in physical education methods classes or
those with limited teaching experience, for planning, organizing,
and sequencing activities. It also provides the novice teacher with
a starting point to effectively teach lifetime sports and fitness
activities. For more experienced teachers, the book will serve as a
guide for teaching lifetime sports, and more importantly, assist
them in focusing their efforts on sound teaching principles based
on current research. Focusing on activities in which a person can
participate over the course of a lifetime, this book can make a
major contribution to the development of health-related components
of physical fitness through sport. The book will assist teachers in
meeting the letter and intent of the National Association for Sport
and Physical Education's Content Standards in Physical Education.
These standards promote the development of a physically educated
person, who is defined as one who has learned skills necessary to
perform a variety of physical activities, is physically fit,
participates regularly in physical activity, knows the implications
of and the benefits from involvement in physical activities, and
values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful
lifestyle.
This book explores how to recognize, treat, and prevent sports
injuries and offers guidance on which sports and training
techniques are most likely to lead to injury. Engaging in sports
has numerous health benefits, but it's an unfortunate reality that
it can also lead to injury. Some sports, such as football and
cheerleading, are particularly notorious for causing harm to young
athletes. Specializing in a particular sport or going too hard too
fast can also lead to injury. But which injuries are most likely to
occur, and how should they be treated in both the short- and
long-term? When should an injured athelete consider surgery? When
is it safe to get back in the game? Books in Greenwood's Q&A
Health Guides series follow a reader-friendly question-and-answer
format that anticipates readers' needs and concerns. Prevalent
myths and misconceptions are identified and dispelled, and a
collection of case studies illustrate key concepts and issues
through relatable stories and insightful recommendations. Each book
also includes a section on health literacy, equipping teens and
young adults with practical tools and strategies for finding,
evaluating, and using credible sources of health information both
on and off the internet-important skills that contribute to a
lifetime of healthy decision-making. Simple Q&A format makes
the subject approachable and accessible to readers, allowing them
to find specific information quickly and easily Offers readers
practical information about how to prevent and treat a wide variety
of sports injuries Guide to Health Literacy section helps readers
improve their research and critical thinking skills Case studies
provide real-world examples of concepts discussed in the book
Common Myths section dispels popular misconceptions surrounding
sports injuries and points readers toward accurate information

A volume in Educational Policy in the 21st Century: Opportunities,
Challenges, and Solutions Series Editor Bruce Anthony Jones,
University of South Florida This volume is a critical and objective
study of the contemporary college student athlete. Framed around
the process of recruitment, transition, and support of student
athletes in higher education, the volume is a response to societal
pressures to reform college athletics. Driven by publicity and the
potential for revenue gains, colleges and universities have
invested heavily in developing athletic programs, coaches, and
facilities. Yet few resources are invested strategically in the
personal and intellectual development of student athletes. Written
by a team of authors with first-hand experience working with
student athletes and transitional programs, the volume argues that
institutional attention must be directed at caring for the personal
and intellectual growth of student athletes. Highlighting some
best-practice curricula and exploring the psychological issues
surrounding participating in often highly-competitive athletics,
the authors consistently conclude that institutional responsibility
is of the utmost and immediate importance. Authors also consider
the unique settings of student athletes in community and private
liberal arts colleges, demonstrating the broad interest in
athletics and institutional competition. The result is an important
volume that will be of interest to those who counsel and administer
intercollegiate athletic programs, faculty and researchers looking
for insightful baseline data on the contemporary student athlete,
and those concerned with transitional programs and the future of
higher education
What we eat has a huge impact on our physical and mental health,
and on our performance in our chosen sport, whether we're
elite-level athletes or enthusiastic amateurs. But, with so much
information out there, how do we choose a way of eating that is
right for us? More Fuel You is a clear and authoritative guide to
making the most of your nutrition. Leading sports dietitian Renee
McGregor looks at fuelling needs for sporting participation,
training and competition, and analyses some popular diet options,
including low-carbohydrate, vegan and intermittent fasting. But
this is not just another sports nutrition book. Renee recommends a
holistic view: by understanding the human body and being
self-aware, you can find the ideal nutritional approach for you
personally. Significantly, Renee also discusses areas of sports
nutrition in populations that are often overlooked, including
women's health and the menopause, healthy ageing, and the inclusion
of individuals who don't necessarily conform to the stereotype of
an athlete, such as people living with chronic health conditions.
Whatever your race, genetics, gender, age, socio-economic status,
body type or ability, it's important to be your own athlete, fuel
appropriately for your body and enjoy what you do. Whether you're a
world-class or real-world athlete, if you're serious about sport
and nutrition, you can't afford not to read this book.

Invasive electromyography is a well-established diagnostic tool
that has been used for decades by neurologists. Recently, new and
alternative devices have increasingly become available that permit
diagnosis without the use of needles. This developing area of
science and the new tools have not, however, been sufficiently
investigated in academic training. Consequently a gap exists
between what science is making possible and the competence acquired
during graduate studies. This handy volume has the aim of filling
this gap by providing the information required by medical
practitioners in rehabilitation, sports, and occupational health as
well as by rehabilitation therapists, ergonomists, and sport
coaches. The techniques that are presented and explained will help
in monitoring and recording changes, evaluating the effectiveness
of treatments and training, evaluating work stations, and
preventing and documenting the evolution of occupational disorders
of the neuromuscular system.
This thesis presents a novel neuro-fuzzy modeling approach for
grasp neuroprostheses. At first, it offers a detailed study of
discomfort due to the application of Functional Electrical
Stimulation to the upper limb. Then, it discusses briefly previous
methods to model hand movements induced by FES with the purpose of
introducing the new modeling approach based on intelligent systems.
This approach is thoroughly described in the book, together with
the proposed application to induce hand and finger movements by
means of a surface FES system based on multi-field electrodes. The
validation tests, carried out on both healthy and neurologically
impaired subjects, demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed
modeling method. All in all, the book proposes an innovative system
based on fuzzy neural networks that is expected to improve the
design and validation of advanced control systems for non-invasive
grasp neuroprostheses.

When barefoot running guru Christopher McDougall takes in a
neglected donkey, his aim is to get Sherman back to reasonable
health. But Sherman is ill-tempered, obstinate and uncooperative -
and it's clear his poor treatment has made him deeply fearful of
humans. Christopher knows that donkeys need a purpose - they are
working, pack animals - and so when he learns of the sport of Burro
Racing or running with donkeys, he sets out to give Sherman
something worth living for. With the aid of Christopher's menagerie
on his farm in rural Pennsylvania, his wife Mika and their friends
and neighbours including the local Amish population, Sherman begins
to build trust in Christopher. To give him a purpose, they start to
run together. But what Sherman gains in confidence and meaning is
something we all need: a connection with nature, the outdoors, with
movement. And as Christopher learns, the side benefits of exercise
and animal contact are surprising, helping with mental and physical
